We show how a variant of the Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorem may be used to count the number of periodic orbits for certain rational difference equations.
A polygon is called rational if the angle between each pair of sides is a rational multiple of $π.$ The main theorem we will prove is Theorem 1: For rational polygons, periodic points of the billiard flow are dense in the phase space of the billiard flow. This is a strengthening of Masur's theorem, who has shown that any rational polygon has ``many'' periodic billiard trajectories; more precisely, the set of directions of the periodic trajectories are dense in the set of velocity directions $§^1.$ We will also prove some refinements of Theorem 1: the ``well distribution'' of periodic orbits in…
By folding an autonomous system of rational equations in the plane to a scalar difference equation, we show that the rational system has coexisting periodic orbits of all possible periods as well as stable aperiodic orbits for certain parameter ranges.
We consider the space of degree $n\ge 2$ rational maps of the Riemann sphere with $k$ distinct marked periodic orbits of given periods. First, we show that this space is irreducible. For $k=2n-2$ and with some mild restrictions on the periods of the marked periodic orbits, we show that the multipliers of these periodic orbits, considered as algebraic functions on the above mentioned space, are algebraically independent over $\mathbb C$. Equivalently, this means that at its generic point, the moduli space of degree $n$ rational maps can be locally parameterized by the multipliers of any $2n-2$ …
We consider $(1,2)$-rational functions given on the field of $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$. In general, such a function has four parameters. We study the case when such a function has two fixed points and show that when there are two fixed points then $(1,2)$-rational function is conjugate to a two-parametric $(1,2)$-rational function. Depending on these two parameters we determine the type of the fixed points, find Siegel disks and the basin of attraction of the fixed points. Moreover, we classify invariant sets and study the ergodicity properties of the function on each invariant set. We de…
Our aim in this paper is to deal with the dynamics of following higher order difference equation x_{n+1}=A+B((x_{n-m})/(x_{n}^2)) where A,B>0, and initial values are positive, and m={1,2,...}. Furthermore, we discuss the periodicity, boundedness, semi-cycles, global asymptotic stability of solutions of these equations. We also handle the rate of convergence of solutions of these difference equations.
We consider entire transcendental maps with bounded set of singular values such that periodic rays exist and land. For such maps, we prove a refined version of the Fatou-Shishikura inequality which takes into account rationally invisible periodic orbits, that is, repelling cycles which are not landing points of any periodic ray. More precisely, if there are $q<\infty$ singular orbits, then the sum of the number of attracting, parabolic, Siegel, Cremer or rationally invisible orbits is bounded above by $q$. In particular, there are at most $q$ rationally invisible repelling periodic orbits. The…
We provide a complete classification of possible graphs of rational preperiodic points of quadratic rational functions defined over the rationals with a rational periodic critical point of period 3, under two assumptions: that these functions have no periodic points of period at least 5 and the conjectured enumeration of points on a certain genus 6 affine plane curve. We show that there are exactly six such possible graphs, and that rational functions satisfying the conditions above have at most eleven rational preperiodic points.
Let $S$ be the collection of quadratic polynomial maps, and degree $2$-rational maps whose automorphism groups are isomorphic to $C_2$ defined over the rational field. Assuming standard conjectures of Poonen and Manes on the period length of a periodic point under the action of a map in $S$, we give a complete description of triples $(f_1,f_2,p)$ such that $p$ is a rational periodic point for both $f_i\in S$, $i=1,2$. We also show that no more than three quadratic polynomial maps can possess a common periodic point over the rational field. In addition, under these hypotheses we show that two n…
We study self-morphisms of smooth real projective algebraic curves that have only real periodic points. In the case of the projective line we provide a convenient characterization of such morphisms. We derive a semialgebraic description of the component of real fibered rational functions all of whose periodic points are real.
Let $A$ be a rational function of degree at least two on the Riemann sphere. We say that $A$ is tame if the algebraic curve $A(x)-A(y)=0$ has no factors of genus zero or one distinct from the diagonal. In this paper, we show that if tame rational functions $A$ and $B$ have orbits with infinite intersection, then $A$ and $B$ have a common iterate. We also show that for a tame rational function $A$ decompositions of its iterates $A^{\circ d},$ $d\geq 1,$ into compositions of rational functions can be obtained from decompositions of a single iterate $A^{\circ N}$ for $N$ big enough.
We study various aspects of the dynamics induced by integer matrices on the invariant rational lattices of the torus in dimension 2 and greater. Firstly, we investigate the orbit structure when the toral endomorphism is not invertible on the lattice, characterising the pretails of eventually periodic orbits. Next we study the nature of the symmetries and reversing symmetries of toral automorphisms on a given lattice, which has particular relevance to (quantum) cat maps.
For a rational polynomial $f$ and rational numbers $c, u$, we put $f_c(x):=f(x)+c$, and consider the Zsigmondy set $\mathcal{Z}(f_c,u)$ associated to the sequence $\{f_c^n(u)-u\}_{n\geq 0}$, where $f_c^n$ is the $n$-st iteration of $f_c$. In this paper, we prove that if $u$ is a rational critical point of $f$, then there exists an $\mathbf M_f>0$ such that $\mathbf M_f\geq \max_{c\in \mathbb{Q}}\{\#\mathcal{Z}(f_c,u)\}$.
We study the following system of two rational difference equations x_n=(β_k x_(n-k)+γ_k y_(n-k))/(A+Σ_(j=1)^l[B_j x_(n-j) ]+Σ_(j=1)^l[C_j y_(n-j) ]), n \in N, y_n=(δ_k x_(n-k)+\in_k y_(n-k))/(q+Σ_(j=1)^l[D_j x_(n-j) ]+Σ_(j=1)^l[E_j y_(n-j) ]), n\in N, with nonnegative parameters and nonnegative initial conditions. We assume that B_j=C_j=D_j=E_j=0 for j=k, 2k, 3k, ...and establish the existence of periodic tetrachotomy behavior which depends on a 2X2 matrix with entries β_k, γ_k, δ_k, and \in_k.
We consider the polynomials $\displaystyle f(x)=x^d+c$, where $d\ge 2$ and $c\in\mathbb Q$. It is conjectured that if $d=2$, then $f$ has no rational periodic point of exact period $N\ge 4$. In this note, fixing some integer $d\ge 2$, we show that the density of such polynomials with a rational periodic point of any period among all polynomials $f(x)=x^d+c$, $c\in\Q$, is zero. Furthermore, we establish the connection between polynomials $f$ with periodic points and two arithmetic sequences. This yields necessary conditions that must be satisfied by $c$ and $d$ in order for the polynomial $f$ t…
This article addresses the existence of $\Q$-rational periodic points for morphisms of projective space. In particular, we construct an infinitely family of morphisms on $¶^N$ where each component is a degree 2 homogeneous form in $N+1$ variables which has a $\Q$-periodic point of primitive period $\frac{(N+1)(N+2)}{2} + \lfloor \frac{N-1}{2}\rfloor$. This result is then used to show that for $N$ large enough there exists morphisms of $¶^N$ with $\Q$-rational periodic points with primitive period larger that $c(k)N^k$ for any $k$ and some constant $c(k)$.
We classify the periodic digit strings which arise from periodic billiard orbits on the four convex $n$-gons $Δ$ which tile $\mathbb{R}^2$ under reflection, answering problem a posed by Baxter and Umble. $Δ$ is either an equilateral triangle, a $45-45-90$ triangle a $30-60-90$, triangle or a rectangle.
We face the problem of characterizing the periodic cases in parametric families of (real or complex) rational diffeomorphisms having a fixed point. Our approach relies on the Normal Form Theory, to obtain necessary conditions for the existence of a formal linearization of the map, and on the introduction of a suitable rational parametrization of the parameters of the family. Using these tools we can find a finite set of values p for which the map can be p-periodic, reducing the problem of finding the parameters for which the periodic cases appear to simple computations. We apply our results to…
In this paper we consider periodic orbits of planar linear Filippov systems with a line of discontinuity. Unlike many publications researching only the maximum number of crossing periodic orbits, we investigate not only the number and configuration of sliding periodic orbits, but also the coexistence of sliding periodic orbits and crossing ones. Firstly, we prove that the number of sliding periodic orbits is at most 2, and give all possible configurations of one or two sliding periodic orbits. Secondly, we prove that two sliding periodic orbits coexist with at most one crossing periodic orbit,…
This article examines dynamical systems on a class of K3 surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{2} \times \mathbb{P}^{2}$ with an infinite automorphism group. In particular, this article develops an algorithm to find $\mathbb{Q}$-rational periodic points using information modulo $p$ for various primes $p$. The algorithm is applied to exhibit K3 surfaces with $\mathbb{Q}$-rational periodic points of primitive period $1,...,16$. A portion of the algorithm is then used to determine the Riemann zeta function modulo 3 of a particular K3 surface and find a family of K3 surfaces with Picard number two.
We establish an approximation of the activity current $T_c$ in the parameter space of a holomorphic family $f$ of rational functions having a marked critical point $c$ by parameters for which $c$ is periodic under $f$, i.e., is a superattracting periodic point. This partly generalizes a Dujardin--Favre theorem for rational functions having preperiodic points, and refines a Bassanelli--Berteloot theorem on a similar approximation of the bifurcation current $T_f$ of the holomorphic family $f$. The proof is based on a dynamical counterpart of this approximation.
We first show that the subgroup of the abelian real group $\mathbb{R}$ generated by the coordinates of a point in $x = (x_1,\dots,x_n)\in\mathbb{R}^n$ completely classifies the $\mathsf{GL}(n,\mathbb Z)$-orbit of $x$. This yields a short proof of J.S.Dani's theorem: the $\mathsf{GL}(n,\mathbb Z)$-orbit of $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$ is dense iff $x_i/x_j\in \mathbb{R} \setminus \mathbb Q$ for some $i,j=1,\dots,n$. We then classify $\mathsf{GL}(n,\mathbb Z)$-orbits of rational affine subspaces $F$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove that the dimension of $F$ together with the volume of a special parallelotope a…
A set $R\subset \mathbb{N}$ is called rational if it is well-approximable by finite unions of arithmetic progressions. Examples of rational sets include many classical sets of number-theoretical origin such as the set of squarefree numbers, the set of abundant numbers, or sets of the form $Φ_x:=\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \frac{\boldsymbolφ(n)}{n}<x\}$, where $x\in[0,1]$ and $\boldsymbolφ$ is Euler's totient function. We investigate the combinatorial and dynamical properties of rational sets and obtain new results in ergodic Ramsey theory. We show that if $R$ is a rational set with $\overline{d}(R)>0$, …
We prove the existence of $n$-periodic orbits for almost all $n\in\mathbb{N}$ in the Rössler system with attracting periodic orbit, for two sets of parameters. The proofs are computer-assisted.
Given a polynomial or a rational map f we associate to it a space of maps. We introduce local coordinates in this space, which are essentially the set of critical values of the map. Then we consider an arbitrary periodic orbit of f with multiplier ρ\not=1 as a function of the local coordinates, and establish a simple connection between the dynamical plane of f and the function ρin the space associated to f. The proof is based on the theory of quasiconformal deformations of rational maps. As a corollary, we show that multipliers of non-repelling periodic orbits are also local coordinates in the…
We introduce a new notion of stability for periodic orbits in polygonal billiards. We say that a periodic orbit of a polygonal billiard is $λ$-stable if there is a periodic orbit for the corresponding pinball billiard which converges to it as $λ$ $\rightarrow$ 1. This notion of stability is unrelated to the notion introduced by Galperin, Stepin and Vorobets. We give sufficient and necessary conditions for a periodic orbit to be $λ$-stable and prove that the set of d-gons having at most finite number of $λ$-stable periodic orbits is dense is the space of d-gons. Moreover, we also determine comp…
There is an open set of right triangles such that for each irrational triangle in this set (i) periodic billiards orbits are dense in the phase space, (ii) there is a unique nonsingular perpendicular billiard orbit which is not periodic, and (iii) the perpendicular periodic orbits fill the corresponding invariant surface.
Consider a transitive Anosov flow on a closed $3$-manifold. After removing a finite set of null-homologous periodic orbits, we study the distribution of the remaining periodic orbits in the homology of the knot complement.
We prove that every sectional Anosov flow (or, equivalently, every sectional-hyperbolic attracting set of a flow) on a compact manifold has a periodic orbit. This extends the previous three-dimensional result obtained in [Existence of periodic orbits for singular-hyperbolic sets].
Let f be a homeomorphism of the torus isotopic to the identity and suppose that there exists a periodic orbit with a non-zero rotation vector (p/q,r/q), then f has a topologically monotone periodic orbit with the same rotation vector.
We study the existence of invariant quadrics for a class of systems of difference equations in ${\mathbb R}^n$ defined by linear fractionals sharing denominator. Such systems can be described in terms of some square matrix $A$ and we prove that there is a correspondence between non-degenerate invariant quadrics and solutions to a certain matrix equation involving $A$. We show that if $A$ is semisimple and the corresponding system admits non-degenerate quadrics, then every orbit of the dynamical system is contained either in an invariant affine variety or in an invariant quadric.
We describe an algorithm for distinguishing hyperbolic components in the parameter space of quadratic rational maps with a periodic critical point. We then illustrate computer images of the hyperbolic components of the parameter spaces V1 - V4, which were produced using our algorithm. We also resolve the singularities of the projective closure of V5 by blowups, giving an alternative proof that as an algebraic curve, the geometric genus of V5 is 1. This explains why we are unable to produce an image for V5.
Our main is to study periodic orbits of linear and invariant flows on a real, connected Lie group. Since each linear flow $φ_t$ has a derivation associated $\mathcal{D}$, we show that the existence of periodic orbits of $φ_t$ is based on the eigenvalues of the derivation $\mathcal{D}$. From this, we study periodic orbits of a linear flow on noncompact, semisimple Lie groups, and we work with periodic orbits of a linear flow on connected, simply connected, solvable Lie groups of dimension 2 or 3.
Given any $K>0$, we construct two equivalent $C^2$ flows, one of which has positive topological entropy larger than $K$ and admits zero as the exponential growth of periodic orbits, in contrast, the other has zero topological entropy and super-exponential growth of periodic orbits. Moreover we establish a $C^{\infty}$ flow on $\mathbb{S}^2$ with super-exponential growth of periodic orbits, which is also equivalent to another flow with zero exponential growth of periodic orbits. On the other hand, any two dimensional flow has only zero topological entropy.
The surface corresponding to the moduli space of quadratic endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with a marked periodic point of order $n$ is studied. It is shown that the surface is rational over $\mathbb{Q}$ when $n\le 5$ and is of general type for $n=6$. An explicit description of the $n=6$ surface lets us find several infinite families of quadratic endomorphisms $f: \mathbb{P}^1 \to \mathbb{P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a rational periodic point of order $6$. In one of these families, $f$ also has a rational fixed point, for a total of at least $7$ periodic and $7$ preperiodic points. Thi…
We prove that for a large and important class of $C^1$ twist maps of the torus periodic and quasi-periodic orbits of a new type exist, provided that there are no rotational invariant circles (R.I.C's). These orbits have a non-zero ''vertical rotation number'' (V.R.N.), in contrast to what happens to Birkhoff periodic orbits and Aubry-Mather sets. The V.R.N. is rational for a periodic orbit and irrational for a quasi-periodic. We also prove that the existence of an orbit with a $V.R.N=a>0,$ implies the existence of orbits with $V.R.N=b,$ for all $0<b<a.$ In this way, related to a generalized de…
We consider a space of complex polynomials of degree $n\ge 3$ with $n-1$ distinguished periodic orbits. We prove that the multipliers of these periodic orbits considered as algebraic functions on that space, are algebraically independent over the field of complex numbers.
We construct a highly-symmetric periodic orbit of eight bodies in three dimensions. In this orbit, each body collides with its three nearest neighbors in a regular periodic fashion. Regularization of the collisions in the orbit is achieved by an extension of the Levi-Civita method. Initial conditions for the orbit are found numerically. Linear stability of the orbit is then shown using a technique by Roberts. Evidence toward higher-order stability is presented as an additional result of a numerical calculation.
Our first purpose is to study the stability of linear flows on real, connected, compact, semisimple Lie groups. After, we study and classify periodic orbits of linear and invariant flows. In particular, we obtain a version of Poincaré-Bendixon's Theorem. As an application, we present periodic orbits of linear or invariant flows on $SO(3)$ or $SU(2)$, and we classify periodic orbits of a linear or invariant system on $SO(4)$.
The existence of an aperiodic orbit for an outer billiard outside a regular octagon is proved. Additionally, almost all orbits of such an outer billiard are proved to be periodic. All possible periods are explicitly listed.
We present an extension of the theory known as Lin's method to heteroclinic chains that connect hyperbolic equilibria and hyperbolic periodic orbits. Based on the construction of a so-called Lin orbit, that is, a sequence of continuous partial orbits that only have jumps in a certain prescribed linear subspace, estimates for these jumps are derived. We use the jump estimates to discuss bifurcation equations for homoclinic orbits near heteroclinic cycles between an equilibrium and a periodic orbit (EtoP cycles).
We study the one-dimensional Fermi-Ulam ping-pong problem with a Bohr almost periodic forcing function and show that the set of initial condition leading to escaping orbits typically has Lebesgue measure zero.
We consider an autonomous differential system in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a periodic orbit and we give a new method for computing the characteristic multipliers associated to it. Our method works when the periodic orbit is given by the transversal intersection of $n-1$ codimension one hypersurfaces and is an alternative to the use of the first order variational equations. We apply it to study the stability of the periodic orbits in several examples, including a periodic solution found by Steklov studying the rigid body dynamics.
A family of periodic orbits is proven to exist in the spatial lunar problem that are continuations of a family of consecutive collision orbits, perpendicular to the primary orbit plane. This family emanates from all but two energy values. The orbits are numerically explored. The global properties and geometry of the family is studied.
The permutation binary neural networks are characterized by global permutation connections and local binary connections. Although the parameter space is not large, the networks exhibit various binary periodic orbits. Since analysis of all the periodic orbits is not easy, we focus on globally stable binary periodic orbits such that almost all initial points fall into the orbits. For efficient analysis, we define the standard permutation connection that represents multiple equivalent permutation connections. Applying the brute force attack to 7-dimensional networks, we present the main result: a…
