We present an extension of the theory known as Lin's method to heteroclinic chains that connect hyperbolic equilibria and hyperbolic periodic orbits. Based on the construction of a so-called Lin orbit, that is, a sequence of continuous partial orbits that only have jumps in a certain prescribed linear subspace, estimates for these jumps are derived. We use the jump estimates to discuss bifurcation equations for homoclinic orbits near heteroclinic cycles between an equilibrium and a periodic orbit (EtoP cycles).
We study heteroclinic networks in $\mathbb{R}^4$, made of a certain type of simple robust heteroclinic cycle. In simple cycles all the connections are of saddle-sink type in two-dimensional fixed-point spaces. We show that there exist only very few ways to join such cycles together in a network and provide the list of all possible such networks in $\mathbb{R}^4$. The networks involving simple heteroclinic cycles of type A are new in the literature and we describe the stability of the cycles in these networks: while the geometry of type A and type B networks is very similar, stability distingui…
An analytic reversible Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom is studied in a neighborhood of its symmetric heteroclinic connection made up of a symmetric saddle-center, a symmetric orientable saddle periodic orbit lying in the same level of a Hamiltonian and two non-symmetric heteroclinic orbits permuted by the involution. This is a codimension one structure and therefore it can be met generally in one-parameter families of reversible Hamiltonian systems. There exist two possible types of such connections in dependence on how the involution acts near the equilibrium. We prove a series…
We analyze the generating mechanisms for heteroclinic cycles in $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$--equivariant ODEs, not involving Hopf bifurcations. Such cycles have been observed in particle physics systems with the mentioned symmetry, in absence of the Hopf bifurcation, see \cite{bury} and \cite{Park}, and as far as we know, there is no available theoretical data explaining these phenomena. We use singularity theory to study the equivalence in the group-symmetric context, as well as the recognition problem for the simplest bifurcation problems with this symmetry group. Sing…
Heteroclinic cycles involving two saddle-foci, where the saddle-foci share both invariant manifolds, occur persistently in some symmetric differential equations on the 3-dimensional sphere. We analyse the dynamics around this type of cycle in the case when trajectories near the two equilibria turn in the same direction around a 1-dimensional connection - the saddle-foci have the same chirality. When part of the symmetry is broken, the 2-dimensional invariant manifolds intersect transversely creating a heteroclinic network of Bykov cycles. We show that the proximity of symmetry creates heterocl…
We study the dynamics near heteroclinic networks for which all eigenvalues of the linearization at the equilibria are real. A common connection and an assumption on the geometry of its incoming and outgoing directions exclude even the weakest forms of switching (i.e. along this connection). The form of the global transition maps, and thus the type of the heteroclinic cycle, plays a crucial role in this. We look at two examples in $\mathbb{R}^5$, the House and Bowtie networks, to illustrate complex dynamics that may occur when either of these conditions is broken. For the House network, there i…
Index theory revealed its outstanding role in the study of periodic orbits of Hamiltonian systems and the dynamical consequences of this theory are enormous. Although the index theory in the periodic case is well-established, very few results are known in the case of homoclinic orbits of Hamiltonian systems. Moreover, to the authors' knowledge, no results have been yet proved in the case of heteroclinic and halfclinic (i.e. parametrised by a half-line) orbits. Motivated by the importance played by these motions in understanding several challenging problems in Classical Mechanics, we develop a …
Multi-shooting parameterization methods for invariant manifolds and heteroclinics of 2 DOF Hamiltonian Poincaré maps, with applications to celestial resonant dynamics
We consider $C^2$ vector fields in the three dimensional sphere with an attracting heteroclinic cycle between two periodic hyperbolic solutions with real Floquet multipliers. The proper basin of this attracting set exhibits historic behavior and from the asymptotic properties of its orbits we obtain a complete set of invariants under topological conjugacy in a neighborhood of the cycle. As expected, this set contains the periods of the orbits involved in the cycle, a combination of their angular speeds, the rates of expansion and contraction in linearizing neighborhoods of them, besides inform…
This article presents a mechanism for the coexistence of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics arising in a neighbourhood of a Bykov cycle where trajectories turn in opposite directions near the two nodes --- we say that the nodes have different chirality. We show that in the set of vector fields defined on a three-dimensional manifold, there is a class where tangencies of the invariant manifolds of two hyperbolic saddle-foci occur densely. The class is defined by the presence of the Bykov cycle, and by a condition on the parameters that determine the linear part of the vector field at the eq…
Rhythmic behaviors in neural systems often combine features of limit cycle dynamics (stability and periodicity) with features of near heteroclinic or near homoclinic cycle dynamics (extended dwell times in localized regions of phase space). Proximity of a limit cycle to one or more saddle equilibria can have a profound effect on the timing of trajectory components and response to both fast and slow perturbations, providing a possible mechanism for adaptive control of rhythmic motions. Reyn showed that for a planar dynamical system with a stable heteroclinic cycle (or separatrix polygon), small…
This paper investigates the connection between blow-up solutions of scalar reaction-diffusion equations, in particular of $u_t = u_{xx} + u^2, $ and its counterpart - eternally existing solutions like heteroclinic orbits - by complex time. We prove that heteroclinic orbits in one-dimensional unstable manifolds are accompanied by blow-up solutions. Furthermore we show, that we can continue blow-up solutions into a slit complex time and eventually back to the real axis. The solution picks up an imaginary factor after continuation which is related to the eigenvalue relations of the linearizations…
In this paper, we consider the scalar reaction-diffusion equations $\partial_t u=Δu + f(x,u,\nabla u)$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ of class $C^2$. We show that the heteroclinic and homoclinic orbits connecting hyperbolic equilibria and hyperbolic periodic orbits are transverse, generically with respect to f. One of the main ingredients of the proof is an accurate study of the singular nodal set of solutions of linear parabolic equations. Our main result is a first step for proving the genericity of Kupka-Smale property, the generic hyperbolicity of periodic orbits remaining unpr…
The purpose of this paper is to advance the knowledge of the dynamics arising from the creation and subsequent bifurcation of Poincaré heteroclinic cycles. The problem is central to dynamics: it has to be addressed if, for instance, one aims at describing the typical orbit behaviour of a typical system, thus providing a global scenario for the ensemble of dynamical systems - see the Introduction and [P1, P2]. Here, we shall consider smooth, i.e. $C^\infty$, one-parameter families of dissipative, meaning non-conservative, surface diffeomorphisms. An hetereoclinic cycle may appear when the param…
In this paper an approach to generate hidden attractors based on piecewise linear (PWL) systems is studied. The approach consists of the coexistence of self-excited attrators and hidden attractors, i.e., the equilibria of the system are immersed in the basin of attraction of the seft-excited attractors, so hidden attractors appear around these self-excited attractors. The approach starts by generating a double-scroll attractor based on two equilibria presented heteroclinic orbits. Then, two equilibria are added to the system, so biestability is generated by displaying two self-excited attracto…
The Frenkel-Kontorova model for dislocation dynamics from 1938 is given by a chain of atoms, where neighbouring atoms interact through a linear spring and are exposed to a smooth periodic on-site potential. A dislocation moving with constant speed corresponds to a heteroclinic travelling wave, making a transition from one well of the on-site potential to another. The ensuing system is nonlocal, nonlinear and nonconvex. We present an existence result for a class of smooth nonconvex on-site potentials. Previous results in mathematics and mechanics have been limited to on-site potentials with har…
We consider semigroup actions on the unit interval generated by strictly increasing $C^r$-maps. We assume that one of the generators has a pair of fixed points, one attracting and one repelling, and a heteroclinic orbit that connects the repeller and attractor, and the other generators form a robust blender, which can bring the points from a small neighborhood of the attractor to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the repeller. This is a model setting for partially hyperbolic systems with one central direction. We show that, under additional conditions on the non-linearity and the Schwarzian…
