An analytic reversible Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom is studied in a neighborhood of its symmetric heteroclinic connection made up of a symmetric saddle-center, a symmetric orientable saddle periodic orbit lying in the same level of a Hamiltonian and two non-symmetric heteroclinic orbits permuted by the involution. This is a codimension one structure and therefore it can be met generally in one-parameter families of reversible Hamiltonian systems. There exist two possible types of such connections in dependence on how the involution acts near the equilibrium. We prove a series of theorems which show a chaotic behavior of the system and those in its unfoldings, in particular, the existence of countable sets of transverse homoclinic orbits to the saddle periodic orbit in the critical level, transverse heteroclinic connections involving a pair of saddle periodic orbits, families of elliptic periodic orbits, homoclinic tangencies, families of homoclinic orbits to saddle-centers in the unfolding, etc. As a byproduct, we get a criterion of the existence of homoclinic orbits to a saddle-center.
In this paper, we study limit cycle bifurcations for a class of general near-Hamiltonian systems near a heteroclinic loop with an elementary saddle and a nilpotent saddle. Firstly, we consider the behaviors of the unperturbed system, providing the phase portraits of the system and the necessary conditions for the appearance of a heteroclinic loop with an elementary saddle and a nilpotent saddle by using the relevant qualitative theory. Then, with consideration of the expression of the first-order Melnikov function, we derive its expansion near the heteroclinic loop by employing some techniques…
We study a topological structure of a closed $n$-manifold $M^n$ ($n\geq 3$) which admits a Morse-Smale diffeomorphism such that codimension one separatrices of saddles periodic points have no heteroclinic intersections different from heteroclinic points. Also we consider gradient like flow on $M^n$ such that codimension one separatices of saddle singularities have no intersection at all. We show that $M^n$ is either an $n$-sphere $S^n$, or the connected sum of a finite number of copies of $S^{n-1}\otimes S^1$ and a finite number of special manifolds $N^n_i$ admitting polar Morse-Smale systems.…
Smooth planar vector fields containing two hyperbolic saddles may possess contours formed by heteroclinic connections between these saddles. We present an overview of the bifurcations of these contours based on papers by J.W. Reyn and A.V. Dukov. Additionally, two new explicit polynomial systems containing such contours are derived, which are studied using the bifurcation software MatCont and are shown to exhibit the theoretically predicted phenomena, including series of heteroclinic connections.
We consider a one-parameter family $(f_λ)_{λ\, \geqslant \, 0}$ of symmetric vector fields on the three-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^3\subset\mathbb{R}^4$ whose flows exhibit a heteroclinic network between two saddle-foci inside a global attracting set. More precisely, when $λ= 0$, there is an attracting heteroclinic cycle between the two equilibria which is made of two $1$-dimensional connections together with a $2$-dimensional sphere which is both the stable manifold of one saddle-focus and the unstable manifold of the other. After slightly increasing the parameter while keeping the $1$-di…
Heteroclinic cycles involving two saddle-foci, where the saddle-foci share both invariant manifolds, occur persistently in some symmetric differential equations on the 3-dimensional sphere. We analyse the dynamics around this type of cycle in the case when trajectories near the two equilibria turn in the same direction around a 1-dimensional connection - the saddle-foci have the same chirality. When part of the symmetry is broken, the 2-dimensional invariant manifolds intersect transversely creating a heteroclinic network of Bykov cycles. We show that the proximity of symmetry creates heterocl…
For flows, the singular cycles connecting saddle periodic orbit and saddle equilibrium can poten- tially result in the so-called singular horseshoe, which means the existence of a non-uniformly hyperbolic chaotic invariant set. However, it is very hard to find a specific dynamical system that exhibits such singular cycles in general. In this paper, the existence of the singular cycles involved in saddle periodic orbits is studied by two types of piecewise affine systems: one is the piecewise affine system having an admissible saddle point with only real eigenvalues and an admissible saddle per…
We present a mechanism for the emergence of strange attractors (observable chaos) in a two-parameter periodically-perturbed family of differential equations on the plane. The two parameters are independent and act on different ways in the invariant manifolds of consecutive saddles in the cycle. When both parameters are zero, the flow exhibits an attracting heteroclinic cycle associated to two equilibria. The first parameter makes the two-dimensional invariant manifolds of consecutive saddles in the cycle to pull apart; the second forces transverse intersection. These relative positions may be …
We consider a class of two-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems with saddle-centers connected by heteroclinic orbits and discuss some relationships between the existence of transverse heteroclinic orbits and nonintegrability. By the Lyapunov center theorem there is a family of periodic orbits near each of the saddle-centers, and the Hessian matrices of the Hamiltonian at the two saddle-centers are assumed to have the same number of positive eigenvalues. We show that if the associated Jacobian matrices have the same pair of purely imaginary eigenvalues, then the stable and unstable manifolds o…
We prove that the cyclicity of a quadratic slow-fast integrable system of Darboux type with a double heteroclinic loop is finite and uniformly bounded.
We present an extension of the theory known as Lin's method to heteroclinic chains that connect hyperbolic equilibria and hyperbolic periodic orbits. Based on the construction of a so-called Lin orbit, that is, a sequence of continuous partial orbits that only have jumps in a certain prescribed linear subspace, estimates for these jumps are derived. We use the jump estimates to discuss bifurcation equations for homoclinic orbits near heteroclinic cycles between an equilibrium and a periodic orbit (EtoP cycles).
We consider an open and dense subset of the set of all connections (heteroclinic orbits) between two saddles of a vector field in dimension three. We give a complete classification up to topological equivalence of the dynamics in a neighbourhood of a connection in this subset.
We present a method for proving the existence of symmetric periodic, heteroclinic or homoclinic orbits in dynamical systems with the reversing symmetry. As an application we show that the Planar Restricted Circular Three Body Problem (PCR3BP) corresponding to the Sun-Jupiter-Oterma system possesses an infinite number of symmetric periodic orbits and homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov orbits. Moreover, we show the existence of symbolic dynamics on six symbols for PCR3BP and the possibility of resonance transitions of the comet. This extends earlier results by Wilczak and Zgliczynski - Heteroclin…
Rhythmic behaviors in neural systems often combine features of limit cycle dynamics (stability and periodicity) with features of near heteroclinic or near homoclinic cycle dynamics (extended dwell times in localized regions of phase space). Proximity of a limit cycle to one or more saddle equilibria can have a profound effect on the timing of trajectory components and response to both fast and slow perturbations, providing a possible mechanism for adaptive control of rhythmic motions. Reyn showed that for a planar dynamical system with a stable heteroclinic cycle (or separatrix polygon), small…
We present a comprehensive mechanism for the emergence of rotational horseshoes and strange attractors in a class of two-parameter families of periodically-perturbed differential equations defining a flow on a three-dimensional manifold. When both parameters are zero, its flow exhibits an attracting heteroclinic network associated to two periodic solutions. After slightly increasing both parameters, while keeping a two-dimensional connection unaltered, we focus our attention in the case where the two-dimensional invariant manifolds of the periodic solutions do not intersect. We prove a wide ra…
Explicit formulae are given for the saddle connection for an integrable family of standard maps studied by Suris. A generalization of Melnikov's method shows that, upon perturbation, this connection is destroyed. We give explicit formula for the first order approximation of the area of the lobes of the resultant turnstile. It is shown that the lobe area is exponentially small in the limit when the Suris map approaches the trivial twist map.
We study heteroclinic solutions of a generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model. Using the methods of Rabinowitz and Stredulinsky, we prove that if the rotation vector of the configuration is rational and if there is an adjacent pair of periodic configurations, then there is a solution that is heteroclinic in one fixed direction and periodic in other directions. Furthermore, if the above heteroclinic solutions have an adjacent pair, then there is a solution that is heteroclinic in two directions and periodic in other directions. The procedure can be repeated to produce more complex solutions. Thus we…
Lorenz attractors are important objects in the modern theory of chaos. The reason from one side is that they are met in various natural applications (fluid dynamics, mechanics, laser dynamics, etc.). At the same time, Lorenz attractors are robust, in the sense that they are generally not destroyed by small perturbations (autonomous, non-autonomous, stochastic). This allows us to be sure that the observed in the experiment object is exactly the chaotic attractor, rather than a long-time periodic orbit. Discrete-time analogs of the Lorenz attractor possess even more complicated structure -- they…
We prove that every heteroclinic saddle loop (a two-saddle cycle) occurring in an analytic finite-parameter family of plane analytic vector fields, may generate no more than a finite number of limit cycles within the family.
There are few explicit examples in the literature of vector fields exhibiting complex dynamics that may be proved analytically. We construct explicitly a {two parameter family of vector fields} on the three-dimensional sphere $\EU^3$, whose flow has a spiralling attractor containing the following: two hyperbolic equilibria, heteroclinic trajectories connecting them {transversely} and a non-trivial hyperbolic, invariant and transitive set. The spiralling set unfolds a heteroclinic network between two symmetric saddle-foci and contains a sequence of topological horseshoes semiconjugate to full s…
In this paper we prove the breakdown of the two-dimensional stable and unstable manifolds associated to two saddle-focus points which appear in the unfoldings of the Hopf-zero singulariry. The method consists in obtaining an asymptotic formula for the difference between this manifolds which turns to be exponentially small respect to the unfolding parameter. The formula obtained is explicit but depends on the so-called Stokes constants, which arise in the study of original vector field and which corresponds to the so called inner equation in singular perturbation theory.
We consider heteroclinic attractor networks motivated by models of competition between neural populations during binocular rivalry. We show that Gamma distributions of dominance times observed experimentally in binocular rivalry and other forms of bistable perception, commonly explained by means of noise in the models, can be achieved with quasi-periodic perturbations. For this purpose, we present a methodology based on the separatrix map to model the dynamics close to heteroclinic networks with quasi-periodic perturbations. Our methodology unifies two different approaches, one based on Melnik…
There are few examples of non-autonomous vector fields exhibiting complex dynamics that may be proven analytically. We analyse a family of periodic perturbations of a weakly attracting robust heteroclinic network defined on the two-sphere. We derive the first return map near the heteroclinic cycle for small amplitude of the perturbing term, and we reduce the analysis of the non-autonomous system to that of a two-dimensional map on a cylinder. Interesting dynamical features arise from a discrete-time Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. When the perturbation strength is small the first return map has a…
We consider $C^2$ vector fields in the three dimensional sphere with an attracting heteroclinic cycle between two periodic hyperbolic solutions with real Floquet multipliers. The proper basin of this attracting set exhibits historic behavior and from the asymptotic properties of its orbits we obtain a complete set of invariants under topological conjugacy in a neighborhood of the cycle. As expected, this set contains the periods of the orbits involved in the cycle, a combination of their angular speeds, the rates of expansion and contraction in linearizing neighborhoods of them, besides inform…
We show that heterodimensional cycles can be born at the bifurcations of a pair of homoclinic loops to a saddle-focus equilibrium for flows in dimension 4 and higher. In addition to the classical heterodimensional connection between two periodic orbits, we found two new types of heterodimensional connections: one is a heteroclinic between a periodic orbit of index 2 and a homoclinic loop, and the other connects a periodic orbit of index 3 to the saddle-focus equilibrium.
In this paper we build Non-singular Morse-Smale flows on S^3 with unknotted and unlinked saddle orbits by identifying fat round handles along their boundaries. This way of building the flows enables to get their phase portraits. We also show that the presence of heteroclinic trajectories imposes an order in the round handle decomposition of these flows; this order is total for NMS flows composed of one repulsive, one attractive and n unknotted saddle orbits, for n >1.
We consider a potential $W:R^m\rightarrow R$ with two different global minima $a_-, a_+$ and, under a symmetry assumption, we use a variational approach to show that the Hamiltonian system \begin{equation} \ddot{u}=W_u(u), \hskip 2cm (1) \end{equation} has a family of $T$-periodic solutions $u^T$ which, along a sequence $T_j\rightarrow+\infty$, converges locally to a heteroclinic solution that connects $a_-$ to $a_+$. We then focus on the elliptic system \begin{equation} Δu=W_u(u),\;\; u:R^2\rightarrow R^m, \hskip 2cm (2) \end{equation} that we interpret as an infinite dimensional analogous of…
The Nielsen-Thurston theory of surface diffeomorphisms shows that useful dynamical information can be obtained about a surface diffeomorphism from a finite collection of periodic orbits. In this paper, we extend these results to homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits of saddle points. These orbits are most readily computed and studied as intersections of unstable and stable manifolds comprising homoclinic or heteroclinic tangles in the surface. We show how to compute a map of a one-dimensional space similar to a train-track which represents the isotopy-stable dynamics of the surface diffeomorphism …
In this paper we study the existence of heteroclinic cycles in generic unfoldings of nilpotent singularities. Namely we prove that any nilpotent singularity of codimension four in $\mathbb{R}^4$ unfolds generically a bifurcation hypersurface of bifocal homoclinic orbits, that is, homoclinic orbits to equilibrium points with two pairs of complex eigenvalues. We also prove that any nilpotent singularity of codimension three in $\mathbb{R}^3$ unfolds generically a bifurcation curve of heteroclinic cycles between two saddle-focus equilibrium points with different stability indexes. Under generic a…
We study dynamics and bifurcations of two-dimensional reversible maps having non-transversal heteroclinic cycles containing symmetric saddle periodic points. We consider one-parameter families of reversible maps unfolding generally the initial heteroclinic tangency and prove that there are infinitely sequences (cascades) of bifurcations of birth of asymptotically stable and unstable as well as elliptic periodic orbits.
Index theory revealed its outstanding role in the study of periodic orbits of Hamiltonian systems and the dynamical consequences of this theory are enormous. Although the index theory in the periodic case is well-established, very few results are known in the case of homoclinic orbits of Hamiltonian systems. Moreover, to the authors' knowledge, no results have been yet proved in the case of heteroclinic and halfclinic (i.e. parametrised by a half-line) orbits. Motivated by the importance played by these motions in understanding several challenging problems in Classical Mechanics, we develop a …
This article concerns arbitrary finite heteroclinic networks in any phase space dimension whose vertices can be a random mixture of equilibria and periodic orbits. In addition, tangencies in the intersection of un/stable manifolds are allowed. The main result is a reduction to algebraic equations of the problem to find all solutions that are close to the heteroclinic network for all time, and their parameter values. A leading order expansion is given in terms of the time spent near vertices and, if applicable, the location on the non-trivial tangent directions. The only difference between a pe…

In this paper we study a type of two singular point singular cycle where one heteroclinic orbit is the transversal intersection of the 2-dimensional stable manifold of one singular point and the 2-dimensional unstable manifold of other singular point. We show that this kind of singular cycle can give rise to a new mechanism of creation of chaos in 3-dimensional vector fields.
Systems of $N$ identical globally coupled phase oscillators can demonstrate a multitude of complex behaviours. Such systems can have chaotic dynamics for $N>4$ when a coupling function is biharmonic. The case $N = 4$ does not possess chaotic attractors when the coupling is biharmonic, but has them when the coupling includes nonpairwise interactions of phases. Previous studies showed that some of chaotic attractors in this system are organized by heteroclinic networks. In present paper we discuss which heteroclinic cycles are forbidden and which are supported by this particular system. We also …
This article presents a mechanism for the coexistence of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics arising in a neighbourhood of a Bykov cycle where trajectories turn in opposite directions near the two nodes --- we say that the nodes have different chirality. We show that in the set of vector fields defined on a three-dimensional manifold, there is a class where tangencies of the invariant manifolds of two hyperbolic saddle-foci occur densely. The class is defined by the presence of the Bykov cycle, and by a condition on the parameters that determine the linear part of the vector field at the eq…
This paper presents methodology for the computation of whole sets of heteroclinic connections between iso-energetic slices of center manifolds of center x center x saddle fixed points of autonomous Hamiltonian systems. It involves: (a) computing Taylor expansions of the center-unstable and center-stable manifolds of the departing and arriving fixed points through the parameterization method, using a new style that uncouples the center part from the hyperbolic one, thus making the fibered structure of the manifolds explicit; (b) uniformly meshing iso-energetic slices of the center manifolds, us…
In this paper, we are concerned with the stability of heteroclinic cycles of the symmetric May-Leonard competition model with seasonal succession. Sufficient conditions for stability of heteroclinic cycles are obtained. Meanwhile, we present the explicit expression of the carrying simplex in a special case. By taking ϕas the switching strategy parameter for a given example, the bifurcation of stability of the heteroclinic cycle is investigated. We also find that there are rich dynamics (including nontrivial periodic solutions, invariant closed curves and heteroclinic cycles) for such a new sys…
When a real saddle equilibrium in a three-dimensional vector field undergoes a homoclinic bifurcation, the associated two-dimensional invariant manifold of the equilibrium closes on itself in an orientable or non-orientable way. We are interested in the interaction between global invariant manifolds of saddle equilibria and saddle periodic orbits for a vector field close to a codimension-two homoclinic flip bifurcation, that is, the point of transition between having an orientable or non-orientable two-dimensional surface. Here, we focus on homoclinic flip bifurcations of case $\textbf{B}$, wh…
We examine the interaction of transcritical and saddle-node bifurcations in a predator-prey-nutrient system that is stressed by the presence of a toxicant affecting the prey. This model, formulated by Kooi et al. ({\sl Ecol. Model.} {\bf 212}(2008), 304--318), has a two-dimensional invariant sub system with zero predator density. In the sub system, a pair of prey-nutrient equilibria is created in a saddle-node bifurcation, while predator invasion in modelled by a transcritical bifurcation of one of this pair. Interactions of these bifurcations at codimension-two points give rise to bistable, p…
Multi-shooting parameterization methods for invariant manifolds and heteroclinics of 2 DOF Hamiltonian Poincaré maps, with applications to celestial resonant dynamics
In this paper, a modified van der Pol oscillator equation is considered which appears in several heart action models. We study its global dynamics and verify many interesting bifurcations such as a Hopf bifurcation, a heteroclinic saddle connection, and a homoclinic saddle connection. Some of these bifurcations are detected by using Conley index methods. We demonstrate how the study of connection matrices and transition matrices shows how to select interesting parameter values for simulations.
The well-known game of Rock--Paper--Scissors can be used as a simple model of competition between three species. When modelled in continuous time using differential equations, the resulting system contains a heteroclinic cycle between the three equilibrium solutions representing the existence of only a single species. The game can be extended in a symmetric fashion by the addition of two further strategies (`Lizard' and `Spock'): now each strategy is dominant over two of the remaining four strategies, and is dominated by the remaining two. The differential equation model contains a set of coup…
We obtain a structurally stable family of smooth ordinary differential equations exhibiting heteroclinic tangencies for a dense subset of parameters. We use this to find vector fields $C^2$-close to an element of the family exhibiting a tangency, for which the set of solutions with historic behaviour contains an open set. This provides an affirmative answer to Taken's Last Problem (F. Takens (2008) Nonlinearity, 21(3) T33--T36). A limited solution with historic behaviour is one for which the time averages do not converge as time goes to infinity. Takens' problem asks for dynamical systems wher…
Consider analytic generic unfoldings of the three dimensional conservative Hopf-Zero singularity. Under open conditions on the parameters determining the singularity, the unfolding possesses two saddle-foci when the unfolding parameter is small enough. One of them has one dimensional stable manifold and two dimensional unstable manifold whereas the other one has one dimensional unstable manifold and two dimensional stable manifold. Baldomá, Castejón and Seara [BCS13] gave an asymptotic formula for the distance between the one dimensional invariant manifolds in a suitable transverse section. Th…
We study a simple dynamical model exhibiting sequential dynamics. We show that in this model there exist sets of parameter values for which a cyclic chain of saddle equilibria, $O_k$, $k=1, \ldots, p$, have two dimensional unstable manifolds that contain orbits connecting each $O_k$ to the next two equilibrium points $O_{k+1}$ and $O_{k+2}$ in the chain ($O_{p+1} = O_1$). We show that the union of these equilibria and their unstable manifolds form a $2$-dimensional surface with boundary that is homeomorphic to a cylinder if $p$ is even and a Möbius strip if $p$ is odd. If, further, each equili…
This paper presents a mechanism for the coexistence of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics arising in a neighbourhood of a conservative Bykov cycle where trajectories turn in opposite directions near the two saddle-foci. We show that {within the class of divergence-free vector fields that preserve the cycle,} tangencies of the invariant manifolds of two hyperbolic saddle-foci densely occur. The global dynamics is persistently dominated by heteroclinic tangencies and by the existence of infinitely many elliptic points coexisting with suspended hyperbolic horseshoes. A generalized version of …
In this work we consider a two-dimensional piecewise smooth system, defined in two domains separated by the switching manifold $x=0$. We assume that there exists a piecewise-defined continuous Hamiltonian that is a first integral of the system. We also suppose that the system possesses an invisible fold-fold at the origin and two heteroclinic orbits connecting two hyperbolic critical points on either side of $x=0$. Finally, we assume that the region closed by these heteroclinic connections is fully covered by periodic orbits surrounding the origin, whose periods monotonically increase as they …
In this paper, we consider the scalar reaction-diffusion equations $\partial_t u=Δu + f(x,u,\nabla u)$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ of class $C^2$. We show that the heteroclinic and homoclinic orbits connecting hyperbolic equilibria and hyperbolic periodic orbits are transverse, generically with respect to f. One of the main ingredients of the proof is an accurate study of the singular nodal set of solutions of linear parabolic equations. Our main result is a first step for proving the genericity of Kupka-Smale property, the generic hyperbolicity of periodic orbits remaining unpr…
