Explicit formulae are given for the saddle connection for an integrable family of standard maps studied by Suris. A generalization of Melnikov's method shows that, upon perturbation, this connection is destroyed. We give explicit formula for the first order approximation of the area of the lobes of the resultant turnstile. It is shown that the lobe area is exponentially small in the limit when the Suris map approaches the trivial twist map.
Heteroclinic connections are trajectories that link invariant sets for an autonomous dynamical flow: these connections can robustly form networks between equilibria, for systems with flow-invariant spaces. In this paper we examine the relation between the heteroclinic network as a flow-invariant set and directed graphs of possible connections between nodes. We consider realizations of a large class of transitive digraphs as robust heteroclinic networks and show that although robust realizations are typically not complete (i.e. not all unstable manifolds of nodes are part of the network), they …
Localized patterns in singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equations typically consist of slow parts -- in which the associated solution follows an orbit on a slow manifold in a reduced spatial dynamical system -- alternated by fast excursions -- in which the solution jumps from one slow manifold to another, or back to the original slow manifold. In this paper we consider the existence and stability of stationary and traveling slow localized patterns that do not exhibit such jumps, i.e. that are completely embedded in a slow manifold of the singularly perturbed spatial dynamical system. The…
We consider a non-autonomous dynamical system formed by coupling two piecewise-smooth systems in $\RR^2$ through a non-autonomous periodic perturbation. We study the dynamics around one of the heteroclinic orbits of one of the piecewise-smooth systems. In the unperturbed case, the system possesses two $C^0$ normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds of dimension two with a couple of three dimensional heteroclinic manifolds between them. These heteroclinic manifolds are foliated by heteroclinic connections between $C^0$ tori located at the same energy levels. By means of the {\em impact map} we pr…
We prove that the cyclicity of a quadratic slow-fast integrable system of Darboux type with a double heteroclinic loop is finite and uniformly bounded.
We study numerically the phase space of the evolution equation h_t = -(h^n h_{xxx})_x - B (h^m h_x)_x . Here h(x,t) is nonnegative, n>0 and m is real, and the Bond number B is positive. We pursue three goals: to investigate the nonlinear stability of the positive periodic and constant steady states; to locate heteroclinic connecting orbits between these steady states and the compactly supported 'droplet' steady states; and to determine how these orbits change when the 'mobility' exponents n and m are changed. For example, we change the mobility coefficients in such a way that the steady states…
We hereby introduce and study an algorithm able to search for initial conditions corresponding to orbits presenting forced oscillations terms only, namely to completely remove the free or proper oscillating part. This algorithm is based on the Numerical Analysis of the Fundamental Frequencies algorithm by J. Laskar, for the identification of the free and forced oscillations, the former being iteratively removed from the solution by carefully choosing the initial conditions. We proved the convergence of the algorithm under suitable assumptions, satisfied in the Hamiltonian framework whenever th…
The main purpose of this article is to study from the geometric point of view the problem of limit cycles bifurcation of perturbed completely integrable systems.
Rapid GPU-Assisted Search and Parameterization-Based Refinement and Continuation of Connections between Tori in Periodically Perturbed Planar Circular Restricted 3-Body Problems
We consider the planar circular restricted three-body problem (PCRTBP), as a model for the motion of a spacecraft relative to the Earth-Moon system. We focus on the Lagrange equilibrium points $L_1$ and $L_2$. There are families of Lyapunov periodic orbits around either $L_1$ or $L_2$, forming Lyapunov manifolds. There also exist homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov manifolds around either $L_1$ or $L_2$, as well as heteroclinic orbits between the Lyapunov manifold around $L_1$ and the one around $L_2$. The motion along the homoclinic/heteroclinic orbits can be described via the scattering map, w…
A family of special cases of the integrable Euler equations on $so(n)$ introduced by Manakov in 1976 is considered. The equilibrium points are found and their stability is studied. Heteroclinic orbits are constructed that connect unstable equilibria and are given by the orbits of certain 1-parameter subgroups of SO(n). The results are complete in the case $n=4$ and incomplete for $n>4$.
This contribution investigates the properties of a category of orbits around Enceladus. In a previous investigation, a set of heteroclinic connections were designed between halo orbits around the equilibrium points L1 and L2 of the circular restricted three-body problem with Saturn and Enceladus as primaries. The geometrical characteristics of those trajectories makes them good candidates as science orbits for the extended observation of the surface of Enceladus: they are highly inclined, they approach the moon and they are maneuver-free. However, the low heights above the surface and the stro…
In this paper, we study the discrete cubic nonlinear Schroedinger lattice under Hamiltonian perturbations. First we develop a complete isospectral theory relevant to the hyperbolic structures of the lattice without perturbations. In particular, Backlund-Darboux transformations are utilized to generate heteroclinic orbits and Melnikov vectors. Then we give coordinate-expressions for persistent invariant manifolds and Fenichel fibers for the perturbed lattice. Finally based upon the above machinery, existence of codimension 2 transversal homoclinic tubes is established through a Melnikov type ca…
It is well known that the dynamics of three point vortices moving in an ideal fluid in the plane can be expressed in Hamiltonian form, where the resulting equations of motion are completely integrable in the sense of Liouville and Arnold. The focus of this investigation is on the persistence of regular behavior (especially periodic motion) associated to completely integrable systems for certain (admissible) kinds of Hamiltonian perturbations of the three vortex system in a plane. After a brief survey of the dynamics of the integrable planar three vortex system, it is shown that the admissible …
Integrable non-linear Hamiltonian systems perturbed by additive noise develop a Lyapunov instability, and are hence chaotic, for any amplitude of the perturbation. This phenomenon is related, but distinct, from Taylor's diffusion in hydrodynamics. We develop expressions for the Lyapunov exponents for the cases of white and colored noise. The situation described here being `multi-resonance' -- by nature well beyond the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser regime, it offers an analytic glimpse on the regime in which many near-integrable systems, such as some planetary systems, find themselves in practice. We…
We provide a constructive method designed in order to control the stability of a given periodic orbit of a general completely integrable system. The method consists of a specific type of perturbation, such that the resulting perturbed system becomes a codimension-one dissipative dynamical system which also admits that orbit as a periodic orbit, but whose stability can be a-priori prescribed. The main results are illustrated in the case of a three dimensional dissipative perturbation of the harmonic oscillator, and respectively Euler's equations form the free rigid body dynamics.
We propose a model for local dynamics of a perturbed convex real-analytic Liouville-integrable Hamiltonian system near a resonance of multiplicity $1+m, m\geq 0$. Physically, the model represents a toroidal pendulum, coupled with a Liouville-integrable system of $n$ non-linear rotators via a small analytic potential. The global bifurcation problem is set-up for the $n$-dimensional isotropic manifold, corresponding to a specific homoclinic orbit of the toroidal pendulum. The splitting of this manifold can be described by a scalar function on an $n$-torus, whose $k$th Fourier coefficient satisfi…
In this paper the problems of integrable and linearizable Lotka-Volterra equations with $(δ:-3 δ:δ)$-resonance are studied. The necessary conditions for both problems are obtained in the case when $δ=1$ and it's sufficiency are proved. It is also shown that non-standard analysis has an important role in proving the sufficient integrable conditions in some cases. The non-standard analysis approaches have been used for both perturbed and unperturbed cases for integral aspects of the given system.
