The restricted circular three-body problem is considered for the following parameter values $C=3.03$, $μ=0.0009537$ - the values for {\em Oterma} comet in the Sun-Jupiter system.
We present a computer assisted proof of an existence of homo- and heteroclinic cycle between two Lyapunov orbits and an existence of symbolic dynamics on four symbols built on this cycle.
We present a method for proving the existence of symmetric periodic, heteroclinic or homoclinic orbits in dynamical systems with the reversing symmetry. As an application we show that the Planar Restricted Circular Three Body Problem (PCR3BP) corresponding to the Sun-Jupiter-Oterma system possesses an infinite number of symmetric periodic orbits and homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov orbits. Moreover, we show the existence of symbolic dynamics on six symbols for PCR3BP and the possibility of resonance transitions of the comet. This extends earlier results by Wilczak and Zgliczynski - Heteroclin…

In this paper, we consider the dynamics of solutions to complex-valued evolutionary partial differential equations (PDEs) and show existence of heteroclinic orbits from nontrivial equilibria to zero via computer-assisted proofs. We also show that the existence of unbounded solutions along unstable manifolds at the equilibrium follows from the existence of heteroclinic orbits. Our computer-assisted proof consists of three separate techniques of rigorous numerics: an enclosure of a local unstable manifold at the equilibria, a rigorous integration of PDEs, and a constructive validation of a trapp…
In this paper we present a computer-assisted procedure for proving the existence of transverse heteroclinic orbits connecting hyperbolic equilibria of polynomial vector fields. The idea is to compute high-order Taylor approximations of local charts on the (un)stable manifolds by using the Parameterization Method and to use Chebyshev series to parameterize the orbit in between, which solves a boundary value problem. The existence of a heteroclinic orbit can then be established by setting up an appropriate fixed-point problem amenable to computer-assisted analysis. The fixed point problem simult…
Consider analytic generic unfoldings of the three dimensional conservative Hopf-Zero singularity. Under open conditions on the parameters determining the singularity, the unfolding possesses two saddle-foci when the unfolding parameter is small enough. One of them has one dimensional stable manifold and two dimensional unstable manifold whereas the other one has one dimensional unstable manifold and two dimensional stable manifold. Baldomá, Castejón and Seara [BCS13] gave an asymptotic formula for the distance between the one dimensional invariant manifolds in a suitable transverse section. Th…
This paper presents methodology for the computation of whole sets of heteroclinic connections between iso-energetic slices of center manifolds of center x center x saddle fixed points of autonomous Hamiltonian systems. It involves: (a) computing Taylor expansions of the center-unstable and center-stable manifolds of the departing and arriving fixed points through the parameterization method, using a new style that uncouples the center part from the hyperbolic one, thus making the fibered structure of the manifolds explicit; (b) uniformly meshing iso-energetic slices of the center manifolds, us…
This paper constructs a certain planar four-body problem which exhibits fast energy growth. The system considered is a quasi-periodic perturbation of the Restricted Planar Circular three-body Problem (RPC3BP). Gelfreich-Turaev's and de la Llave's mechanism is employed to obtain the fast energy growth. The diffusion is created by a heteroclinic cycle formed by two Lyapunov periodic orbits surrounding $L_1$ and $L_2$ Lagrangian points and their heteroclinic intersections. Our model is the first known example in celestial mechanics of the a priori chaotic case of Arnold diffusion.
Rapid GPU-Assisted Search and Parameterization-Based Refinement and Continuation of Connections between Tori in Periodically Perturbed Planar Circular Restricted 3-Body Problems
This contribution investigates the properties of a category of orbits around Enceladus. In a previous investigation, a set of heteroclinic connections were designed between halo orbits around the equilibrium points L1 and L2 of the circular restricted three-body problem with Saturn and Enceladus as primaries. The geometrical characteristics of those trajectories makes them good candidates as science orbits for the extended observation of the surface of Enceladus: they are highly inclined, they approach the moon and they are maneuver-free. However, the low heights above the surface and the stro…
Multi-shooting parameterization methods for invariant manifolds and heteroclinics of 2 DOF Hamiltonian Poincaré maps, with applications to celestial resonant dynamics
We consider spatially homogeneous Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) models that perturb General Relativity (GR) by a parameter $v\in (0,1)$ such that GR occurs at $v=1/2$. We describe the dynamics for the extremal case $v=0$, which possess the usual Bianchi hierarchy: type $\mathrm{I}$ (Kasner circle of equilibria), type $\mathrm{II}$ (heteroclinics that induce the Kasner map) and type $\mathrm{VI_0},\mathrm{VII_0}$ (further heteroclinics). For type $\mathrm{VIII}$ and $\mathrm{IX}$, we use a computer-assisted approach to prove the existence of periodic orbits which are far from the Mixmaster attractor and…
We consider the planar circular restricted three-body problem (PCRTBP), as a model for the motion of a spacecraft relative to the Earth-Moon system. We focus on the Lagrange equilibrium points $L_1$ and $L_2$. There are families of Lyapunov periodic orbits around either $L_1$ or $L_2$, forming Lyapunov manifolds. There also exist homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov manifolds around either $L_1$ or $L_2$, as well as heteroclinic orbits between the Lyapunov manifold around $L_1$ and the one around $L_2$. The motion along the homoclinic/heteroclinic orbits can be described via the scattering map, w…
We present a computer assisted proof of existence of a family of Lyapunov orbits which stretches from L2 up to half the distance to the smaller primary in the Jupiter-Sun planar restricted circular three body problem. We then focus on a small family of Lyapunov orbits with energies close to comet Oterma and show that their associated invariant manifolds intersect transversally. Our computer assisted proof provides explicit bounds on the location and on the angle of intersection.
In this work, we develop a new method to design energy minimum low-thrust missions (L2-minimization). In the Circular Restricted Three Body Problem, the knowledge of invariant manifolds helps us initialize an indirect method solving a transfer mission between periodic Lyapunov orbits. Indeed, using the PMP, the optimal control problem is solved using Newton-like algorithms finding the zero of a shooting function. To compute a Lyapunov to Lyapunov mission, we first compute an admissible trajectory using a heteroclinic orbit between the two periodic orbits. It is then used to initialize a multip…
Consider the Restricted Planar Circular 3 Body Problem with both realistic mass ratio and Jacobi constant for the Sun-Jupiter pair. We prove the existence of all possible combinations of past and future final motions. In particular, we obtain the existence of oscillatory motions. All the constructed trajectories cross the orbit of Jupiter but avoid close encounters with it. The proof relies on the method of correctly aligned windows and is computer assisted.
We present a computer assisted proof or diffusion in the Planar Elliptic Restricted Three Body Problem. We treat the elliptic problem as a perturbation of the circular problem, where the perturbation parameter is the eccentricity of the primaries. The unperturbed system preserves energy, and we show that for sufficiently small perturbations we have orbits with explicit energy changes, independent from the size of the perturbation. The result is based on shadowing of orbits along transversal intersections of stable/unstable manifolds of a normally hyperbolic cylinder.
The recent discovery of binary objects in the Kuiper-belt opens an invaluable window into past and present conditions in the trans-Neptunian part of the Solar System. For example, knowledge of how these objects formed can be used to impose constraints on planetary formation theories. We have recently proposed a binary-object formation model based on the notion of chaos-assisted capture. Here we present a more detailed analysis with calculations performed in the spatial (three-dimensional) three- and four-body Hill approximations. It is assumed that the potential binary partners are initially f…
This paper considers two point boundary value problems for conservative systems defined in multiple coordinate systems, and develops a flexible a-posteriori framework for computer assisted existence proofs. Our framework is applied to the study collision and near collision orbits in the circular restricted three body problem. In this case the coordinate systems are the standard rotating coordinates, and the two Levi-Civita coordinate systems regularizing collisions with each of the massive primaries. The proposed framework is used to prove the existence of a number of orbits which have long be…
We develop computer assisted arguments for proving the existence of transverse homoclinic connecting orbits, and apply these arguments for a number of non-perturbative parameter and energy values in the spatial equilateral circular restricted four body problem. The idea is to formulate the desired connecting orbits as solutions of certain two point boundary value problems for orbit segments which originate and terminate on the local stable/unstable manifolds attached to a periodic orbit. These boundary value problems are studied via a Newton-Kantorovich argument in an appropriate Cartesian pro…
We propose a general framework for computer-assisted verification of the presence of symmetry breaking, period-tupling and touch-and-go bifurcations of symmetric periodic orbits for reversible maps. The framework is then adopted to Poincaré maps in reversible autonomous Hamiltonian systems. In order to justify the applicability of the method, we study bifurcations of halo orbits in the Circular Restricted Three Body Problem. We give a computer-assisted proof of the existence of wide branches of halo orbits bifurcating from $L_{1,2,3}$-Lyapunov families and for wide range of mass parameter. For…
The simplest non-collision solutions of the N-body problem are the "relative equilibria", in which each body follows a circular orbit around the centre of mass and the shape formed by the N bodies is constant. It is easy to see that the moment of inertia of such a solution is constant. In 1970, D. Saari conjectured that the converse is also true for the planar Newtonian N-body problem: relative equilibria are the only constant-inertia solutions. A computer-assisted proof for the 3-body case was recently given by R. Moeckel. We present a different kind of answer: proofs that several generalisat…
