The earlier work required that the matrix be Hermitian and so did not give the full characterization of qualitative behavior. This version improves on the work posted prior and gives the complete picture in this case
We study the following system of two rational difference equations x_n=(β_k x_(n-k)+γ_k y_(n-k))/(A+Σ_(j=1)^l[B_j x_(n-j) ]+Σ_(j=1)^l[C_j y_(n-j) ]), n \in N, y_n=(δ_k x_(n-k)+\in_k y_(n-k))/(q+Σ_(j=1)^l[D_j x_(n-j) ]+Σ_(j=1)^l[E_j y_(n-j) ]), n\in N, with nonnegative parameters and nonnegative initial conditions. We assume that B_j=C_j=D_j=E_j=0 for j=k, 2k, 3k, ...and establish the existence of periodic tetrachotomy behavior which depends on a 2X2 matrix with entries β_k, γ_k, δ_k, and \in_k.
We show how a variant of the Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorem may be used to count the number of periodic orbits for certain rational difference equations.
By folding an autonomous system of rational equations in the plane to a scalar difference equation, we show that the rational system has coexisting periodic orbits of all possible periods as well as stable aperiodic orbits for certain parameter ranges.
We consider the space of degree $n\ge 2$ rational maps of the Riemann sphere with $k$ distinct marked periodic orbits of given periods. First, we show that this space is irreducible. For $k=2n-2$ and with some mild restrictions on the periods of the marked periodic orbits, we show that the multipliers of these periodic orbits, considered as algebraic functions on the above mentioned space, are algebraically independent over $\mathbb C$. Equivalently, this means that at its generic point, the moduli space of degree $n$ rational maps can be locally parameterized by the multipliers of any $2n-2$ …
We consider $(1,2)$-rational functions given on the field of $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$. In general, such a function has four parameters. We study the case when such a function has two fixed points and show that when there are two fixed points then $(1,2)$-rational function is conjugate to a two-parametric $(1,2)$-rational function. Depending on these two parameters we determine the type of the fixed points, find Siegel disks and the basin of attraction of the fixed points. Moreover, we classify invariant sets and study the ergodicity properties of the function on each invariant set. We de…
We give a complete description of the qualitative behavior of the second-order rational difference equation #166. We also establish the boundedness character for the rational system in the plane #(8,30).
Our aim in this paper is to deal with the dynamics of following higher order difference equation x_{n+1}=A+B((x_{n-m})/(x_{n}^2)) where A,B>0, and initial values are positive, and m={1,2,...}. Furthermore, we discuss the periodicity, boundedness, semi-cycles, global asymptotic stability of solutions of these equations. We also handle the rate of convergence of solutions of these difference equations.
We provide a complete classification of possible graphs of rational preperiodic points of quadratic rational functions defined over the rationals with a rational periodic critical point of period 3, under two assumptions: that these functions have no periodic points of period at least 5 and the conjectured enumeration of points on a certain genus 6 affine plane curve. We show that there are exactly six such possible graphs, and that rational functions satisfying the conditions above have at most eleven rational preperiodic points.
A full Lie point symmetry analysis of rational difference equations is performed. Non-trivial symmetries are derived and exact solutions using these symmetries are obtained.
Let $S$ be the collection of quadratic polynomial maps, and degree $2$-rational maps whose automorphism groups are isomorphic to $C_2$ defined over the rational field. Assuming standard conjectures of Poonen and Manes on the period length of a periodic point under the action of a map in $S$, we give a complete description of triples $(f_1,f_2,p)$ such that $p$ is a rational periodic point for both $f_i\in S$, $i=1,2$. We also show that no more than three quadratic polynomial maps can possess a common periodic point over the rational field. In addition, under these hypotheses we show that two n…
We discuss first order systems of rational difference equations which have the property that lines through the origin are mapped into lines through the origin. We call such systems projective systems of rational difference equations and we show a useful change of variables which helps us to understand the behavior in these cases. We include several examples to demonstrate the utility of this change of variables.
We study self-morphisms of smooth real projective algebraic curves that have only real periodic points. In the case of the projective line we provide a convenient characterization of such morphisms. We derive a semialgebraic description of the component of real fibered rational functions all of whose periodic points are real.
In this paper we study the relationship between the integrability of rational symplectic maps and difference Galois theory. We present a Galoisian condition, of Morales-Ramis type, ensuring the non-integrability of a rational symplectic map in the non-commutative sense (Mishchenko-Fomenko). As a particular case, we obtain a com- plete discrete analogue of Morales-Ramis Theorems for non-integrabi- lity in the sense of Liouville.
We consider the polynomials $\displaystyle f(x)=x^d+c$, where $d\ge 2$ and $c\in\mathbb Q$. It is conjectured that if $d=2$, then $f$ has no rational periodic point of exact period $N\ge 4$. In this note, fixing some integer $d\ge 2$, we show that the density of such polynomials with a rational periodic point of any period among all polynomials $f(x)=x^d+c$, $c\in\Q$, is zero. Furthermore, we establish the connection between polynomials $f$ with periodic points and two arithmetic sequences. This yields necessary conditions that must be satisfied by $c$ and $d$ in order for the polynomial $f$ t…
This article addresses the existence of $\Q$-rational periodic points for morphisms of projective space. In particular, we construct an infinitely family of morphisms on $¶^N$ where each component is a degree 2 homogeneous form in $N+1$ variables which has a $\Q$-periodic point of primitive period $\frac{(N+1)(N+2)}{2} + \lfloor \frac{N-1}{2}\rfloor$. This result is then used to show that for $N$ large enough there exists morphisms of $¶^N$ with $\Q$-rational periodic points with primitive period larger that $c(k)N^k$ for any $k$ and some constant $c(k)$.
We consider a rational system of first order difference equations in the plane with four parameters such that all fractions have a common denominator. We study, for the different values of the parameters, the global and local properties of the system. In particular, we discuss the boundedness and the asymptotic behavior of the solutions, the existence of periodic solutions and the stability of equilibria.
In this study, we investigate the form of solutions, stability character and asymptotic behavior of the following rational difference equation x_{n+1}=(γ/(x_{n}(x_{n-1}+α)+\b{eta})), n=0,1,..., where the inital values x_{-1} and x_{0} and α, \b{eta} and γ with γ are nonnegative real numbers. Its solutions are associated with generalized Tribonacci numbers.
We classify the periodic digit strings which arise from periodic billiard orbits on the four convex $n$-gons $Δ$ which tile $\mathbb{R}^2$ under reflection, answering problem a posed by Baxter and Umble. $Δ$ is either an equilateral triangle, a $45-45-90$ triangle a $30-60-90$, triangle or a rectangle.
We face the problem of characterizing the periodic cases in parametric families of (real or complex) rational diffeomorphisms having a fixed point. Our approach relies on the Normal Form Theory, to obtain necessary conditions for the existence of a formal linearization of the map, and on the introduction of a suitable rational parametrization of the parameters of the family. Using these tools we can find a finite set of values p for which the map can be p-periodic, reducing the problem of finding the parameters for which the periodic cases appear to simple computations. We apply our results to…
This article examines dynamical systems on a class of K3 surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{2} \times \mathbb{P}^{2}$ with an infinite automorphism group. In particular, this article develops an algorithm to find $\mathbb{Q}$-rational periodic points using information modulo $p$ for various primes $p$. The algorithm is applied to exhibit K3 surfaces with $\mathbb{Q}$-rational periodic points of primitive period $1,...,16$. A portion of the algorithm is then used to determine the Riemann zeta function modulo 3 of a particular K3 surface and find a family of K3 surfaces with Picard number two.
We establish an approximation of the activity current $T_c$ in the parameter space of a holomorphic family $f$ of rational functions having a marked critical point $c$ by parameters for which $c$ is periodic under $f$, i.e., is a superattracting periodic point. This partly generalizes a Dujardin--Favre theorem for rational functions having preperiodic points, and refines a Bassanelli--Berteloot theorem on a similar approximation of the bifurcation current $T_f$ of the holomorphic family $f$. The proof is based on a dynamical counterpart of this approximation.
The asymptotic behavior (such as convergence to an equilibrium, convergence to a 2-cycle, and divergence to infinity) of solutions of the following multi-parameter, rational, second order difference equation x_{n+1} =(ax_{n}^3+ bx_{n}^2x_{n-1}+cx_{n}x_{n-1}^2+dx_{n-1}^3)/x_{n}^2, x_{-1},x_{0}\in R, is studied in this paper.
A set $R\subset \mathbb{N}$ is called rational if it is well-approximable by finite unions of arithmetic progressions. Examples of rational sets include many classical sets of number-theoretical origin such as the set of squarefree numbers, the set of abundant numbers, or sets of the form $Φ_x:=\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \frac{\boldsymbolφ(n)}{n}<x\}$, where $x\in[0,1]$ and $\boldsymbolφ$ is Euler's totient function. We investigate the combinatorial and dynamical properties of rational sets and obtain new results in ergodic Ramsey theory. We show that if $R$ is a rational set with $\overline{d}(R)>0$, …
Left-coprimeness condition for the reachability in finite time of pseudo-rational systems of order zero with an application to difference delay systems
Given a polynomial or a rational map f we associate to it a space of maps. We introduce local coordinates in this space, which are essentially the set of critical values of the map. Then we consider an arbitrary periodic orbit of f with multiplier ρ\not=1 as a function of the local coordinates, and establish a simple connection between the dynamical plane of f and the function ρin the space associated to f. The proof is based on the theory of quasiconformal deformations of rational maps. As a corollary, we show that multipliers of non-repelling periodic orbits are also local coordinates in the…
In this paper the asymptotic stability of equilibria and periodic points of the following higher order rational difference Equation x_{n+1} =(alpha x_{n-k})/(1+x_{n}...x_{n-k}), k>=1, n=0,1,... is studied where the parameters ?alpha, betta, and gamma are positive real numbers, and the initial conditions x_{-k}, ..., x_{0} are given arbitrary real numbers. The forbidden set of this equation is found and then, the order reduction method is used to facilitate the analysis of its asymptotic dynamics
We describe an algorithm for distinguishing hyperbolic components in the parameter space of quadratic rational maps with a periodic critical point. We then illustrate computer images of the hyperbolic components of the parameter spaces V1 - V4, which were produced using our algorithm. We also resolve the singularities of the projective closure of V5 by blowups, giving an alternative proof that as an algebraic curve, the geometric genus of V5 is 1. This explains why we are unable to produce an image for V5.
The surface corresponding to the moduli space of quadratic endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with a marked periodic point of order $n$ is studied. It is shown that the surface is rational over $\mathbb{Q}$ when $n\le 5$ and is of general type for $n=6$. An explicit description of the $n=6$ surface lets us find several infinite families of quadratic endomorphisms $f: \mathbb{P}^1 \to \mathbb{P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a rational periodic point of order $6$. In one of these families, $f$ also has a rational fixed point, for a total of at least $7$ periodic and $7$ preperiodic points. Thi…
In this part we study the dynamics of the following rational multi-parameter first order difference equation x_{n+1} =(ax_{n}^3+ bx_{n}^2+cx_{n} + d)/x_{n}^3, x_{0}\in R^{+} where the parameters a, b, d together with the initial condition x_{0} are positive while the parameter c could accept some negative values. We investigate the equilibria and 2-cycles of this equation and analyze qualitative and asymptotic behavior of it's solutions such as convergence to an equilibrium or to a 2-cycle.
The dynamics of the second order rational difference equation $\displaystyle{z_{n+1}=\frac{α+ z_{n-1}}{βz_n + z_{n-1}}}$ with the real parameter $α$, $β$ and arbitrary non-negative real initial conditions is investigated a decade ago. In the present manuscript, the same has been revisited considering the parameters $α$ and $β$ as complex numbers and the initial values as arbitrary complex numbers. It is found that some of the results which are valid in real line but does not valid in complex plane. The chaotic solutions of the difference equation with complex parameters are achieved, however t…
We study kth order systems of two rational difference equations $$x_n=\frac{α+\sum^{k}_{i=1}β_{i}x_{n-i} + \sum^{k}_{i=1}γ_{i}y_{n-i}}{A+\sum^{k}_{j=1}B_{j}x_{n-j} + \sum^{k}_{j=1}C_{j}y_{n-j}},\quad n\in\mathbb{N},$$ $$y_n=\frac{p+\sum^{k}_{i=1}δ_{i}x_{n-i} + \sum^{k}_{i=1}ε_{i}y_{n-i}}{q+\sum^{k}_{j=1}D_{j}x_{n-j} + \sum^{k}_{j=1}E_{j}y_{n-j}},\quad n\in\mathbb{N}.$$ In particular we assume non-negative parameters and non-negative initial conditions. We develop several approaches which allow us to extend well known boundedness results on the kth order rational difference equation to the sett…
We obtain the solution of the fourth order difference equation $$ x_{n+1}=\frac{ αx_{n-3}}{A+B x_{n-1}x_{n-3}}$$ with the initial conditions; $x_{-3}=d,$ $x_{-2}=c,$ $x_{-1}=b,$ and $x_{0}=a$ are arbitrary nonzero real numbers, $α$, $A$ and $B$ are arbitrary constants. The result is used to study the convergence of solutions, the existence of unbounded solutions and the convergence to periodic solutions. We illustrate the results by several numerical examples.
We provide a complete classification of possible graphs of rational preperiodic points of endomorphisms of the projective line of degree 2 defined over the rationals with a rational periodic critical point of period 2, under the assumption that these maps have no periodic points of period at least 7. We explain how this extends results of Poonen on quadratic polynomials. We show that there are 13 possible graphs, and that such maps have at most 9 rational preperiodic points. We provide data related to the analogous classification of graphs of endomorphisms of degree 2 with a rational periodic …
Dynamics of the delay rational difference equation $\displaystyle{z_{n+1}=\frac{α+βz_{n-k}}{γ- z_{n}}}$ with complex parameters $α$, $β$, $γ$ and arbitrary complex initial conditions is investigated. Existence of prime period two solutions and higher order periods are ensured in the complex parameters unlike in the case of real parameters of the same rational difference equation. In addition, a new dynamical behavior, chaotic solutions of the difference equation are ensured computationally.
Intermittent dynamics is characterized by long periods of different types of dynamical characteristics, for instance almost periodic dynamics alternated by chaotic dynamics. Critical intermittency is intermittent dynamics that can occur in iterated function systems, and involves a superattracting periodic orbit. This paper will provide and study examples of iterated function systems by two rational maps on the Riemann sphere that give rise to critical intermittency. The main ingredient for this is a superattracting fixed point for one map that is mapped onto a common repelling fixed point by t…
Consider the celebrated Lyness recurrence $x_{n+2}=(a+x_{n+1})/x_{n}$ with $a\in\Q$. First we prove that there exist initial conditions and values of $a$ for which it generates periodic sequences of rational numbers with prime periods $1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10$ or $12$ and that these are the only periods that rational sequences $\{x_n\}_n$ can have. It is known that if we restrict our attention to positive rational values of $a$ and positive rational initial conditions the only possible periods are $1,5$ and $9$. Moreover 1-periodic and 5-periodic sequences are easily obtained. We prove that for inf…
We study the existence of invariant quadrics for a class of systems of difference equations in ${\mathbb R}^n$ defined by linear fractionals sharing denominator. Such systems can be described in terms of some square matrix $A$ and we prove that there is a correspondence between non-degenerate invariant quadrics and solutions to a certain matrix equation involving $A$. We show that if $A$ is semisimple and the corresponding system admits non-degenerate quadrics, then every orbit of the dynamical system is contained either in an invariant affine variety or in an invariant quadric.
We study real numbers $β$ with the curious property that the $β$-expansion of all sufficiently small positive rational numbers is purely periodic. It is known that such real numbers have to be Pisot numbers which are units of the number field they generate. We complete known results due to Akiyama to characterize algebraic numbers of degree 3 that enjoy this property. This extends results previously obtained in the case of degree 2 by Schmidt, Hama and Imahashi. Let $γ(β)$ denote the supremum of the real numbers $c$ in $(0,1)$ such that all positive rational numbers less than $c$ have a purely…

We prove existence of infinitely many classical periodic solutions with periodic boundary conditions for a class of monotone semilinear wave equations. Our argument relies on some new estimates for the linear problem with periodic boundary conditions by combining Littewood-Paley techniques, the Hausdorff-Young theorem and a variational formulation due to Rabinowitz. We also develop a new approach to the regularity of distributional solutions by differentiating the equations and employing Gagliardo-Nirenberg estimates.
We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of pairs of closed orbits of a weak-mixing transitive Anosov flow whose homology classes have a fixed difference.
Let $K$ be a number field. Let $S$ be a finite set of places of $K$ containing all the archimedean ones. Let $R_S$ be the ring of $S$-integers of $K$. In the present paper we consider endomorphisms of $\pro$ of degree 2, defined over $K$, with good reduction outside $S$. We prove that there exist only finitely many such endomorphisms, up to conjugation by ${\rm PGL}_2(R_S)$, admitting a periodic point in $\po$ of order $>3$. Also, all but finitely many classes with a periodic point in $\po$ of order 3 are parametrized by an irreducible curve.
We prove that, for a Ruelle-expanding map, the zeta function is rational and the topological entropy is equal to the exponential growth rate of the periodic points.
Let $q$ be a prime power and $ϕ$ a rational function with coefficients in a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. For $n \geq 1$, each element of $\mathbb{P}^1(\F_{q^n})$ is either periodic or strictly preperiodic under iteration of $ϕ$. Denote by $a_n$ the proportion of periodic elements. Little is known about how $a_n$ changes as $n$ grows, unless $ϕ$ is a power map or Chebyshev polynomial. We give the first results on this question for a wider class of rational functions: $a_n$ has lim inf $0$ when $q$ is odd and $ϕ$ is quadratic and neither Lattès nor conjugate to a one-parameter family of exceptio…
In this paper, we investigate the existence of multiple periodic solutions for two classes of nonlinear difference systems involving $(ϕ_1,ϕ_2)$-Laplacian. First, by using an important critical point theorem due to B. Ricceri, we establish an existence theorem of three periodic solutions for the first nonlinear difference system with $(ϕ_1,ϕ_2)$-Laplacian and two parameters. Moreover, for the second nonlinear difference system with $(ϕ_1,ϕ_2)$-Laplacian, by using the Clark's Theorem, we obtain a multiplicity result of periodic solutions under a symmetric condition. Finally, two examples are gi…
In this paper it is dealt with the following system of difference equations x_{n+1}=((a_{n})/(x_{n}))+((b_{n})/(y_{n})), y_{n+1}=((c_{n})/(x_{n}))+((d_{n})/(y_{n})), n in N_0, where the initial values x_0,y_0 are positive real numbers and the coefficients (a_{n})_{n>=0}, (b_{n})_{n>=0}, (c_{n})_{n>=0}, (d_{n})_{n>=0} are two-periodic sequences with positive terms. The system is an extention of a system that every positive solution is two-periodic or converges to its a two-periodic solution. Here, the long-term behavior of posistive solutions of the system is examined by using a new method to s…
We describe the sequences {x_n}_n given by the non-autonomous second order Lyness difference equations x_{n+2}=(a_n+x_{n+1})/x_n, where {a_n}_n is either a 2-periodic or a 3-periodic sequence of positive values and the initial conditions x_1,x_2 are as well positive. We also show an interesting phenomenon of the discrete dynamical systems associated to some of these difference equations: the existence of one oscillation of their associated rotation number functions. This behavior does not appear for the autonomous Lyness difference equations.
We consider two types of non-autonomous 2-periodic Gumovski-Mira difference equations. We show that while the corresponding autonomous recurrences are conjugated, the behavior of the sequences generated by the 2-periodic ones differ dramatically: in one case the behavior of the sequences is simple (integrable) and in the other case it is much more complicated (chaotic). We also present a global study of the integrable case that includes which periods appear for the recurrence.
We study the non-autonomous Riccati difference equation \[x_{n+1}=\frac{a_nx_n+b_n}{c_nx_n+d_n}, \ n=0,1,2,\cdots\] where $(a_n)_{n\geq0}, \ (b_n)_{n\geq0}, \ (c_n)_{n\geq0}, \ \text{and} \ (d_n)_{n\geq0}$ are $k$-periodic sequences, $k\geq 1$, with initial value $x_0 \in \mathbb{R}$. Precisely we give a detailed analysis of the forbidden set and the character of the solutions.
We study periodic wind-tree models, unbounded planar billiards with periodically located rectangular obstacles. For a class of rational parameters we show the existence of completely periodic directions, and recurrence; for another class of rational parameters, there are directions in which all trajectories escape, and we prove a rate of escape for almost all directions. These results extend to a dense $G_δ$ of parameters.
The purpose of this note is give some evidence in support of conjectures of Poonen, and Morton and Silverman, on the periods of rational numbers under the iteration of quadratic polynomials. In particular, Poonen conjectured that there are at most 9 periodic points defined over the rational numbers for any map in the family x^2 + c for c rational. We verify this conjecture for c values up to height 10^8. For quadratic number fields, we provide evidence that the upper bound on the exact period of Q-rational periodic point is 6.
