Rational functions with only real periodic points

We study self-morphisms of smooth real projective algebraic curves that have only real periodic points. In the case of the projective line we provide a convenient characterization of such morphisms. We derive a semialgebraic description of the component of real fibered rational functions all of whose periodic points are real.

Computer Generated Images for Quadratic Rational Maps with a Periodic Critical Point

We describe an algorithm for distinguishing hyperbolic components in the parameter space of quadratic rational maps with a periodic critical point. We then illustrate computer images of the hyperbolic components of the parameter spaces V1 - V4, which were produced using our algorithm. We also resolve the singularities of the projective closure of V5 by blowups, giving an alternative proof that as an algebraic curve, the geometric genus of V5 is 1. This explains why we are unable to produce an image for V5.

Moduli spaces of quadratic rational maps with a marked periodic point of small order

The surface corresponding to the moduli space of quadratic endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^1$ with a marked periodic point of order $n$ is studied. It is shown that the surface is rational over $\mathbb{Q}$ when $n\le 5$ and is of general type for $n=6$. An explicit description of the $n=6$ surface lets us find several infinite families of quadratic endomorphisms $f: \mathbb{P}^1 \to \mathbb{P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a rational periodic point of order $6$. Rational points in periodic analytic sets and the Manin-Mumford conjecture

We present a new proof of the Manin-Mumford conjecture about torsion points on algebraic subvarieties of abelian varieties. Residual periodicity on the Markoff surface

A case study of arithmetic dynamics over the rationals on the Markoff surface is presented, in particular the local-global dynamical property of strong residual periodicity. The dynamical system induced by the composition of any two of the reflections from the three special points at infinity on the Markoff surface is shown to be strongly residually periodic. Rational surfaces with a large group of automorphisms

We classify rational surfaces for which the image of the automorphisms group in the group of linear transformations of the Picard group is the largest possible. This answers a question raised by Arthur Coble in 1928, and can be rephrased in terms of periodic orbits of a birational action of an infinite Coxeter group on ordered point sets in the projective plane modulo projective equivalence. We develop techniques for using compactifications of Hurwitz spaces to study families of rational maps $\mathbb{P}^1\to\mathbb{P}^1$ defined by critical orbit relations.
