We prove that for a large and important class of $C^1$ twist maps of the torus periodic and quasi-periodic orbits of a new type exist, provided that there are no rotational invariant circles (R.I.C's). These orbits have a non-zero ''vertical rotation number'' (V.R.N.), in contrast to what happens to Birkhoff periodic orbits and Aubry-Mather sets. The V.R.N. is rational for a periodic orbit and irrational for a quasi-periodic. We also prove that the existence of an orbit with a $V.R.N=a>0,$ implies the existence of orbits with $V.R.N=b,$ for all $0<b<a.$ In this way, related to a generalized definition of rotation number, we characterize all kinds of periodic and quasi-periodic orbits a twist map of the torus can have. And as a consequence of the previous results we obtain that a twist map of the torus with no R.I.C's has positive topological entropy, which is a very classical result. In the end of the paper we present some examples, like the Standard map, such that our results apply.
Let f be a homeomorphism of the torus isotopic to the identity and suppose that there exists a periodic orbit with a non-zero rotation vector (p/q,r/q), then f has a topologically monotone periodic orbit with the same rotation vector.
The Rössler System is characterized by a three-parameter family of quadratic 3D vector fields. There exist two one-parameter families of Rössler Systems exhibiting a zero-Hopf equilibrium. For Rössler Systems near to one of these families, we provide generic conditions ensuring the existence of a torus bifurcation. In this case, the torus surrounds a periodic solution that bifurcates from the zero-Hopf equilibrium. For Rössler Systems near to the other family, we provide generic conditions for the existence of a periodic solution bifurcating from the zero-Hopf equilibrium. This improves curren…
Counting periodic orbits of endomorphisms on the 2-torus is considered, with special focus on the relation between global and local aspects and between the dynamical zeta function on the torus and its analogue on finite lattices. The situation on the lattices, up to local conjugacy, is completely determined by the determinant, the trace and a third invariant of the matrix defining the toral endomorphism.
In this paper we consider torus homeomorphisms $f$ homotopic to Dehn twists. We prove that if the vertical rotation set of $f$ is reduced to zero, then there exists a compact connected essential "horizontal" set K, invariant under $f$. In other words, if we consider the lift $\hat{f}$ of $f$ to the cylinder, which has zero vertical rotation number, then all points have uniformly bounded motion under iterates of $\hat{f}$. Also, we give a simple explicit condition which, when satisfied, implies that the vertical rotation set contains an interval and thus also implies positive topological entrop…
In this paper, following J.Nielsen, we introduce a complete characteristic of orientation preserving periodic maps on the two-dimensional torus. All admissible complete characteristics were found and realized. In particular, each of classes of non-homotopic to the identity orientation preserving periodic homeomorphisms on the 2-torus is realized by an algebraic automorphism. Moreover, it is shown that number of such classes is finite. Due to V.Z. Grines and A. Bezdenezhnykh, any gradient like orientation preserving diffeomorphism of an orientable surface is represented as a superposition of th…
We study the relationship between free curves and periodic points for torus homeomorphisms in the homotopy class of the identity. By free curve we mean a homotopically nontrivial simple closed curve that is disjoint from its image. We prove that every rational point in the rotation set is realized by a periodic point provided that there is no free curve and the rotation set has empty interior. This gives a topological version of a theorem of Franks. Using this result, and inspired by a theorem of Guillou, we prove a version of the Poincaré-Birkhoff Theorem for torus homeomorphisms: in the abse…
This article deals with directional rotational deviations for non-wandering periodic point free homeomorphisms of the 2-torus which are homotopic to the identity. We prove that under mild assumptions, such a homeomorphism exhibits uniformly bounded rotational deviations in some direction if and only it leaves invariant a pseudo-foliation, a notion which is a slight generalization of classical one-dimensional foliations. To get these results, we introduce a novel object called $\tildeρ$-centralized skew-product and their associated stable sets at infinity.
It is very well known that periodic orbits of autonomous Hamiltonian systems are generically organized into smooth one-parameter families (the parameter being just the energy value). We present a simple example of an integrable Hamiltonian system (with an arbitrary number of degrees of freedom greater than one) with a unique periodic orbit in the phase space (which is not compact). Similar examples are given for Hamiltonian systems with a unique invariant torus (of any prescribed dimension) carrying conditionally periodic motions. Parallel examples for Hamiltonian systems with a compact phase …
In this paper, we are concerned with the existence of invariant curves of the planar twist mappings where the perturbations are almost periodic. As an application, the existence of almost periodic solutions and the boundedness of all solutions for pendulum-type equations with an almost periodic external force are proved.
At variance from the cases of relative equilibria and relative periodic orbits of dynamical systems with symmetry, the dynamics in relative quasi-periodic tori (namely, subsets of the phase space that project to an invariant torus of the reduced system on which the flow is quasi-periodic) is not yet completely understood. Even in the simplest situation of a free action of a compact and abelian connected group, the dynamics in a relative quasi-periodic torus is not necessarily quasi-periodic. It is known that quasi-periodicity of the unreduced dynamics is related to the reducibility of the reco…
In this paper we are concerned with the existence of invariant curves of planar twist mappings which are almost periodic in a spatial variable. As an application of this result to differential equations we will discuss the existence of almost periodic solutions and the boundedness of all solutions for superlinear Duffing's equation with an almost periodic external force.
We consider the rotation set $ρ(F)$ for a lift $F$ of an area preserving homeomorphism $f: \t^2\to \t^2$, which is homotopic to the identity. The relationship between this set and the existence of periodic points for $f$ is least well understood in the case when this set is a line segment. We show that in this case if a vector $v$ lies in $ρ(F)$ and has both co-ordinates rational, then there is a periodic point $x\in \t^2$ with the property that $$\frac{F^q(x_0)-x_0}q = v$$ where $x_0\in \re^2$ is any lift of $x$ and $q$ is the least period of $x$.
We prove that symplectic twist maps defined on the cotangent bundle of the d-dimensional torus that have no conjugate points are $C^0$ integrable, i.e. the cotangent bundle is continuously foliated by a family of invariant Lagrangian graphs.
We prove that, for translation surfaces whose homology is generated by the periodic orbits, the notions of - finite blocking property - pure periodicity - torus branched covering are equivalent. In particular, we prove this equivalence for convex surfaces and on a dense open subset of full measure on every normalized stratum.
We describe new arithmetic invariants for pairs of torus orbits on groups isogenous to an inner form of $\mathbf{PGL}_n$ over a number field. These invariants are constructed by studying the double quotient of a linear algebraic group by a maximal torus. Using the new invariants we significantly strengthen results towards the equidistribution of packets of periodic torus orbits on higher rank $S$-arithmetic quotients. Packets of periodic torus orbits are natural collections of torus orbits coming from a single adelic torus and are closely related to class groups of number fields. The distribut…
We prove the existence of at least two geometrically different periodic solution with winding number N for the forced relativistic pendulum. The instability of a solution is also proved. The proof is topological and based on the version of the Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem by Franks. Moreover, with some restriction on the parameters, we prove the existence of twist dynamics.
We consider the model of a point-vortex under a periodic perturbation and give sufficient conditions for the existence of generalized quasi-periodic solutions with rotation number. The proof uses Aubry-Mather theory to obtain the existence of a family of minimal orbits of the Poincaré map associated to the system.
We prove that for a torus homeomorphism isotopic to the identity and with a lift whose rotation set is an interval, either every rational point in the rotation set is realized by a periodic orbit, or there exists an annular, essential, periodic set. In the latter case we give a qualitative description of the dynamics.
We prove results towards the equidistribution of certain families of periodic torus orbits on homogeneous spaces, with particular focus on the case of the diagonal torus acting on quotients of $\PGL_n(\R)$. After attaching to each periodic orbit an integral invariant (the discriminant) our results have the following flavour: certain standard conjectures about the distribution of such orbits hold up to exceptional sets of at most $O(Δ^ε)$ orbits of discriminant $\leq Δ$. The proof relies on the well-separatedness of periodic orbits together with measure rigidity for torus actions. We also give …
We use a result of J. Mather on the existence of connecting orbits for compositions of monotone twist maps of the cylinder to prove the existence of connecting geodesics on the unit tangent bundle $ST^2$ of the 2-torus in regions without invariant tori.
Twisted torus links are given by twisting a subset of strands on a closed braid representative of a torus link. T--links are a natural generalization, given by repeated positive twisting. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between positive braid representatives of Lorenz links and T--links, so Lorenz links and T--links coincide. Using this correspondence, we identify over half of the simplest hyperbolic knots as Lorenz knots. We show that both hyperbolic volume and the Mahler measure of Jones polynomials are bounded for infinite collections of hyperbolic Lorenz links. The correspondence …
We completely integrate the magnetic geodesic flow on a flat two-torus with the magnetic field $F = \cos (x) dx \wedge dy$ and describe all contractible periodic magnetic geodesics. It is shown that there are no such geodesics for energy $E \geq 1/2$, for $E< 1/2$ simple periodic magnetic geodesics form two $S^1$-families for which the (fixed energy) action functional is positive and therefore there are no periodic magnetic geodesics for which the action functional is negative.
Let $(\mathbb T^2,g)$ be a Riemannian two-torus and let $σ$ be an oscillating $2$-form on $\mathbb T^2$. We show that for almost every small positive number $k$ the magnetic flow of the pair $(g,σ)$ has infinitely many periodic orbits with energy $k$. This result complements the analogous statement for closed surfaces of genus at least $2$ [Asselle and Benedetti, Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations, 2015] and at the same time extends the main theorem in [Abbondandolo, Macarini, Mazzucchelli, and Paternain, J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS), to appear] to the non-exact oscillating case.
A less studied numerical characteristic of periodic orbits of area preserving twist maps of the annulus is the twist or torsion number, called initially the amount of rotation. It measures the average rotation of tangent vectors under the action of the derivative of the map along that orbit, and characterizes the degree of complexity of the dynamics. The aim of this paper is to give new insights into the definition and properties of the twist number, and to relate its range to the order properties of periodic orbits. We derive an algorithm to deduce the exact value or a demi--unit interval con…
We prove that there exist Beltrami fields in Euclidean space, with sharp decay at infinity, which have a prescribed set of invariant tori (possibly knotted or linked) that enclose an arbitrarily large number of hyperbolic periodic orbits. These hyperbolic orbits are cablings over the core curve of each torus. Moreover, the domain bounded by each invariant torus is covered by an almost full measure set of invariant tori. We show that an analogous result holds for high-frequency Beltrami fields on the flat 3-torus.
