We study the relationship between free curves and periodic points for torus homeomorphisms in the homotopy class of the identity. By free curve we mean a homotopically nontrivial simple closed curve that is disjoint from its image. We prove that every rational point in the rotation set is realized by a periodic point provided that there is no free curve and the rotation set has empty interior. This gives a topological version of a theorem of Franks. Using this result, and inspired by a theorem of Guillou, we prove a version of the Poincaré-Birkhoff Theorem for torus homeomorphisms: in the absence of free curves, either there is a fixed point or the rotation set has nonempty interior.
Let f be a homeomorphism of the torus isotopic to the identity and suppose that there exists a periodic orbit with a non-zero rotation vector (p/q,r/q), then f has a topologically monotone periodic orbit with the same rotation vector.
We prove that, if $f$ is a homeomorphism of the two torus isotopic to the identity whose rotation set is a non-degenerate segment and $f$ has a periodic point, then it has uniformly bounded deviations in the direction perpendicular to the segment.
We provide an equivalent characterisation for the existence of one-dimensional irrational rotation factors of conservative torus homeomorphisms that are not eventually annular. It states that an area-preserving non-annular torus homeomorphism $f$ is semiconjugate to an irrational rotation $R_α$ of the circle if and only if there exists a well-defined speed of rotation in some rational direction on the torus, and the deviations from the constant rotation in this direction are uniformly bounded. By means of a counterexample, we also demonstrate that a similar characterisation does not hold for e…
We prove that a homeomorphism of the torus homotopic to the identity whose rotation set is reduced to a single totally irrational vector is chain-recurrent. In fact, we show that pseudo-orbits can be chosen with a small number of jumps, in particular, that the nonwandering set is weakly transitive. We give an example showing that the nonwandering set of such a homeomorphism may not be transitive.
Let $K_1$, $K_2$ $\subset$ $R^2$ be two convex, compact sets. We would like to know if there are commuting torus homeomorphisms $f$ and $h$ homotopic to the identity, with lifts $\tilde f$ and $\tilde h$, such that $K_1$ and $K_2$ are their rotation sets, respectively. In this work, we proof some cases where it cannot happen, assuming some restrictions on rotation sets.
As was known to H. Poincare, an orientation preserving circle homeomorphism without periodic points is either minimal or has no dense orbits, and every orbit accumulates on the unique minimal set. In the first case the minimal set is the circle, in the latter case a Cantor set. In this paper we study a two-dimensional analogue of this classical result: we classify the minimal sets of non-resonant torus homeomorphisms; that is, torus homeomorphisms isotopic to the identity for which the rotation set is a point with rationally independent irrational coordinates.
We prove that for a torus homeomorphism isotopic to the identity and with a lift whose rotation set is an interval, either every rational point in the rotation set is realized by a periodic orbit, or there exists an annular, essential, periodic set. In the latter case we give a qualitative description of the dynamics.
We show that, if $f$ is a homeomorphism of the 2--torus isotopic to the identity, and its lift $\widetilde f$ is transitive, or even if it is transitive outside of the lift of the elliptic islands, then $(0,0)$ is in the interior of the rotation set of $\widetilde f.$ This proves a particular case of Boyland's conjecture.
It is well known that the rotation number of a circle homeomorphism defined by H. Poincaré allows to completely understand the dynamics of such a map from the topological point of view. In this paper, we collect some results concerning the existence of topological dynamical models associated to rotation sets of homeomorphisms of $\T^2$.
We provide a classification of minimal sets of homeomorphisms of the two-torus, in terms of the structure of their complement. We show that this structure is exactly one of the following types: (1) a disjoint union of topological disks, or (2) a disjoint union of essential annuli and topological disks, or (3) a disjoint union of one doubly essential component and bounded topological disks. Periodic bounded disks can only occur in type 3. This result provides a framework for more detailed investigations, and additional information on the torus homeomorphism allows to draw further conclusions. I…
This article deals with directional rotational deviations for non-wandering periodic point free homeomorphisms of the 2-torus which are homotopic to the identity. We prove that under mild assumptions, such a homeomorphism exhibits uniformly bounded rotational deviations in some direction if and only it leaves invariant a pseudo-foliation, a notion which is a slight generalization of classical one-dimensional foliations. To get these results, we introduce a novel object called $\tildeρ$-centralized skew-product and their associated stable sets at infinity.
We prove the existence of an open and dense set D\subset? Homeo0(T2) (set of toral homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity) such that the rotation set of any element in D is a rational polygon. We also extend this result to the set of axiom A dif- feomorphisms in Homeo0(T2). Further we observe the existence of minimal sets whose rotation set is a non-trivial segment, for an open set in Homeo0(T2).
Let $f: \mathbb{T}^2 \to \mathbb{T}^2$ be a homeomorphism homotopic to the identity and $F: \mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^2$ a lift of $f$ such that the rotation set $ρ(F)$ is a line segment of rational slope containing a point in $\mathbb{Q}^2$. We prove that if $f$ is ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure on the torus and the average rotation vector (with respect to same measure) does not belong to $\mathbb{Q}^2$ then some power of $f$ is an annular homeomorphism.
In the context of the Franks-Misiurewicz Conjecture, we study homeomorphisms of the two-torus semiconjugate to an irrational rotation of the circle. As a special case, this conjecture asserts uniqueness of the rotation vector in this class of systems. We first characterise these maps by the existence of an invariant foliation by essential annular continua (essential subcontinua of the torus whose complement is an open annulus) which are permuted with irrational combinatorics. This result places the considered class close to skew products over irrational rotations. Generalising a well-known res…
We consider the rotation set $ρ(F)$ for a lift $F$ of an area preserving homeomorphism $f: \t^2\to \t^2$, which is homotopic to the identity. The relationship between this set and the existence of periodic points for $f$ is least well understood in the case when this set is a line segment. We show that in this case if a vector $v$ lies in $ρ(F)$ and has both co-ordinates rational, then there is a periodic point $x\in \t^2$ with the property that $$\frac{F^q(x_0)-x_0}q = v$$ where $x_0\in \re^2$ is any lift of $x$ and $q$ is the least period of $x$.
We construct different types of quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms with transitive but non-minimal dynamics. Concerning the recent Poincaré-like classification for this class of maps of Jaeger-Stark, we demonstrate that transitive but non-minimal behaviour can occur in each of the different cases. This closes one of the last gaps in the topological classification. Actually, we are able to get some transitive quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms with rather complicated minimal sets. For example, we show that, in some of the examples we construct, the unique minimal set is …
The goals of this paper are to obtain theoretical models of what happens when a computer calculates the rotation set of a homeomorphism, and to find a good algorithm to perform simulations of this rotation set. To do that we introduce the notion of observable rotation set, which takes into account the fact that we can only detect phenomenon appearing on positive Lebesgue measure sets; we also define the asymptotic discretized rotation set which in addition takes into account the fact that the computer calculates with a finite number of digits It appears that both theoretical results and simula…
In this paper we consider torus homeomorphisms $f$ homotopic to Dehn twists. We prove that if the vertical rotation set of $f$ is reduced to zero, then there exists a compact connected essential "horizontal" set K, invariant under $f$. In other words, if we consider the lift $\hat{f}$ of $f$ to the cylinder, which has zero vertical rotation number, then all points have uniformly bounded motion under iterates of $\hat{f}$. Also, we give a simple explicit condition which, when satisfied, implies that the vertical rotation set contains an interval and thus also implies positive topological entrop…
We construct a family $\{Φ_t\}_{t\in[0,1]}$ of homeomorphisms of the two-torus isotopic to the identity, for which all of the rotation sets $ρ(Φ_t)$ can be described explicitly. We analyze the bifurcations and typical behavior of rotation sets in the family, providing insight into the general questions of toral rotation set bifurcations and prevalence. We show that there is a full measure subset of $[0,1]$, consisting of infinitely many mutually disjoint non-trivial closed intervals, on each of which the rotation set mode locks to a constant polygon with rational vertices; that the generic rot…
The goal of the article is to characterize the conservative homeomorphisms of a closed orientable surface $S$ of genus $\geq 2$, that have finitely many periodic points. By conservative, we mean a map with no wandering point. As a particular case, when $S$ is furnished with a symplectic form, we characterize the symplectic diffeomorphisms of $S$ with finitely many periodic points.
We study the relationship between transitivity and topological chaos for homeomorphisms of the two torus. We show that if a transitive homeomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^2$ is homotopic to the identity and has both a fixed point and a periodic point which is not fixed, then it has a topological horseshoe. We also show that if a transitive homeomorphims of $\mathbb{T}^2$ is homotopic to a Dehn twist, then either it is aperiodic or it has a topological horseshoe.
We study the rotation sets for homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity on the torus $\mathbb T^d$, $d\ge 2$. In the conservative setting, we prove that there exists a Baire residual subset of the set $\text{Homeo}_{0, λ}(\mathbb T^2)$ of conservative homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity so that the set of points with wild pointwise rotation set is a Baire residual subset in $\mathbb T^2$, and that it carries full topological pressure and full metric mean dimension. Moreover, we prove that for every $d\ge 2$ the rotation set of $C^0$-generic conservative homeomorphisms on $\mathbb T^d$ is …
This paper studies homeomorphisms of surfaces isotopic to the identity by means of purely topological methods and Brouwer theory. The main development is a novel theory of orbit forcing using maximal isotopies and transverse foliations. This allows us to derive new proofs for some known results as well as some new applications, among which we note the following: we extend Franks and Handel's classification of zero entropy maps of $S^2$ for non-wandering homeomorphisms; we show that if $f$ is a Hamiltonian homeomorphism of the annulus, then the rotation set of $f$ is either a singleton or it co…
We prove that if an area-preserving homeomorphism of the torus in the homotopy class of the identity has a rotation set which is a nondegenerate vertical segment containing the origin, then there exists an essential invariant annulus. In particular, some lift to the universal covering has uniformly bounded displacement in the horizontal direction.
We give an equivalent characterisation for the existence of a semi-conjugacy to an irrational rotation for conservative homeomorphisms of the two-torus. This leads to an analogue of Poincare's classification of circle homeomorphisms for conservative toral homeomorphisms with unique rotation vector and a certain bounded mean motion property. For minimal toral homeomorphisms, the result extends to arbitrary dimensions. Further, we provide a basic classification for the dynamics of non-wandering toral homeomorphisms homotopic to the identitiy.
In this paper, following J.Nielsen, we introduce a complete characteristic of orientation preserving periodic maps on the two-dimensional torus. All admissible complete characteristics were found and realized. In particular, each of classes of non-homotopic to the identity orientation preserving periodic homeomorphisms on the 2-torus is realized by an algebraic automorphism. Moreover, it is shown that number of such classes is finite. Due to V.Z. Grines and A. Bezdenezhnykh, any gradient like orientation preserving diffeomorphism of an orientable surface is represented as a superposition of th…
We prove that if a homeomorphism of a closed orientable surface S has no wandering points and leaves invariant a compact, connected set K which contains no periodic points, then either K=S and S is a torus, or $K$ is the intersection of a decreasing sequence of annuli. A version for non-orientable surfaces is given.
We prove that any minimal $2$-torus homeomorphism which is isotopic to the identity and whose rotation set is not just a point exhibits uniformly bounded rotational deviations on the perpendicular direction to the rotation set. As a consequence of this, we show that any such homeomorphism is topologically mixing and we prove Franks-Misiurewicz conjecture under the assumption of minimality.
Let $f$ be an orientation and area preserving diffeomorphism of an oriented surface $M$ with an isolated degenerate fixed point $z_0$ with Lefschetz index one. Le Roux conjectured that $z_0$ is accumulated by periodic orbits. In this article, we will approach Le Roux's conjecture by proving that if $f$ is isotopic to the identity by an isotopy fixing $z_0$ and if the area of $M$ is finite, then $z_0$ is accumulated not only by periodic points, but also by periodic orbits in the measure sense. More precisely, the Dirac measure at $z_0$ is the limit in weak-star topology of a sequence of invaria…
A conservative irrational pseudo-rotation of the two-torus is semi-conjugate to the irrational rotation if and only if it has the property of bounded mean motion [10]. (Here 'irrational pseudo-rotation' means a toral homeomorphism with uniquely defined, totally irrational rotation vector.) The aim of this note is to explore this concept some further. For instance, we provide an example which shows that the preceding statement does not hold in the non-conservative case. Further, we collect a number of observations concerning the case where the bounded mean motion property fails. In particular, …
For metrizable spaces we replace the notion of almost periodic homeomorphism with a similar notion and verify that the usual characterizations of almost periodic homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces are valid for all metrizable spaces.
Let p be a saddle fixed point for an orientation-preserving surface diffeomorphism f admitting a homoclinic point q. Let V be an open 2-cell bounded by a simple loop formed by two arcs joining p to q lying respectively in the stable and unstable curves at p. It is shown that f|V has fixed point index 1 or 2 depending only on the geometry of V near p.
Let f be an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the plane such that f-Id is contracting. Under these hypotheses, we establish the existence, for every periodic orbit, of a fixed point which has nonzero linking number with this periodic orbit.
Rotation vectors, as defined for homeomorphisms of the torus that are isotopic to the identity, are generalized to such homeomorphisms of any complete Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature. These generalized rotation vectors are shown to exist for almost every orbit of such a dynamical system with respect to any invariant measure with compact support. The concept is then extended to flows and, as an application, it is shown how non-null rotation vectors can be used to construct a measurable semi-conjugacy between a given flow and the geodesic flow of a manifold.
We prove that the polynomial entropy of an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the circle equals 1 when the homeomorphism is not conjugate to a rotation and that it is 0 otherwise. In a second part we prove that the polynomial entropy of a flow on the two dimensional torus associated with a $C^1$ nonvanishing vector field is less that $1$. We moreover prove that when the flow possesses periodic orbits its polynomial entropy equals 1 unless it is conjugate to a rotation (in this last case, the polynomial entropy is zero).
We show that if the rotation set of a homeomorphism of the torus is stable under small perturbations of the dynamics, then it is a convex polygon with rational vertices. We also show that such homeomorphisms are $C^0$-generic and have bounded rotational deviations (even for pseudo-orbits). The results hold both in the area-preserving setting and in the general setting. When the rotation set is stable, we give explicit estimates on the type of rationals that may appear as vertices of rotation sets in terms of the stability constants.
In this article we consider homeomorphisms of the open annulus $\mathbb{A}=\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{R}$ which are isotopic to the identity and preserve a Borel probability measure of full support, focusing on the existence of non-contractible periodic orbits. Assume $f$ such homeomorphism such that the connected components of the set of fixed points of $f$ are all compact. Further assume that there exists $\check{f}$ a lift of $f$ to the universal covering of $\mathbb{A}$ such that the set of fixed points of $\check{f}$ is non-empty and that this set projects into an open topologica…
The aim of this short note is to explain how the arguments of the "closing lemma with time control" of F. Abdenur and S. Crovisier (arXiv:1111.4206) can be used to answer Question 1 of the article "Instability for the rotation set of homeomorphisms of the torus homotopic to the identity" of S. Addas-Zanata.
Let $f:{\rm T^2\rightarrow T^2}$ be a homeomorphism homotopic to the identity, $\widetilde{f}:{\rm I}\negthinspace {\rm R^2\rightarrow I} \negthinspace {\rm R^2}$ be a fixed lift and $ρ(\widetilde{f})$ be its rotation set, which we assume to have interior. We also assume that some rational point $(\frac pq,\frac rq)\in \partial ρ(\widetilde{f})$ and we want to understand how stable this situation is. To be more precise, we want to know if it is possible to find two different homeomorphisms, which are arbitrarily small $C^0$-perturbations of $f,$ denoted $f_1$ and $f_2,$ in a way that $(\frac p…
We prove a generalization of the fixed point theorem of Cartwright and Littlewood. Namely, suppose $h : \mathbb{R}^2 \to\mathbb{R}^2$ is an orientation preserving planar homeomorphism, and let $C$ be a continuum such that $h^{-1}(C)\cup C$ is acyclic. If there is a $c\in C$ such that $\{h^{-i}(c):i\in\mathbb{N}\}\subseteq C$, or $\{h^i(c):i\in\mathbb{N}\}\subseteq C$, then $C$ also contains a fixed point of $h$. Our approach is based on Morton Brown's short proof of the result of Cartwright and Littlewood. In addition, making use of a linked periodic orbits theorem of Bonino we also prove a co…
We show that on a totally disconnected compact metric space every separating homeomorphisms is expansive except at periodic points. We conclude that minimal separating homeomorphisms are expansive and that every separating homeomorphism has asymptotic points. We show that the only spaces admitting separating (or finite expansive) and recurrent homeomorphisms are finite sets. We apply our results to give a characterization of expansivity in terms of the expansivity of the cyclic group of powers of the homeomorphism.
Let $f$ be an $R$-closed homeomorphism on a connected orientable closed surface $M$. In this paper, we show that If $M$ has genus more than one, then each minimal set is either a periodic orbit or an extension of a Cantor set. If $M = \mathbb{T}^2$ and $f$ is neither minimal nor periodic, then either each minimal set is finite disjoint union of essential circloids or there is a minimal set which is an extension of a Cantor set. If $M = \mathbb{S}^2$ and $f$ is not periodic but orientation-preserving (resp. reversing), then the minimal sets of $f$ (resp. $f^2$) are exactly two fixed points and …
Let f be an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the disc D2 which possesses a periodic point of period 3. Then either f is isotopic, relative the periodic orbit, to a homeomorphism g which is conjugate to a rotation by 2 pi /3 or 4 pi /3, or f has a periodic point of least period n for each n in N*.
Let S be a compact, oriented surface with negative Euler characteristic and let f be a homeomorphism of S that is isotopic to the identity. If there exists a periodic orbit with a non-zero rotation vector, then there exists a simple braid with the same rotation vector.
In this article, we give a growth rate about the number of periodic orbits in the Franks type theorem obtained by the authors \cite{LWY}. As applications, we prove the following two results: there exist infinitely many distinct non-contractible closed geodesics on $\mathbb{R}P^2$ endowed with a Riemannian metric such that its Gaussian curvature is positive, moreover, the number of non-contractible closed geodesics of length $\leq l$ grows at least like $l^2$; and there exist either two or infinitely many distinct non-contractible closed geodesics on Finsler $\mathbb{R}P^2$ with reversibility $…
Given an integer m>1 we consider Zm-equivariant and orientation preserving homeomorphisms in the plane with an asymptotically stable fixed point at the origin. We present examples without periodic points and having some complicated dynamical features. The key is a preliminary construction of Zm-equivariant Denjoy maps of the circle.
We prove that every finitely-generated group of homeomorphisms of the 2-dimensional sphere all of whose elements have a finite order which is a power of 2 and so that there exists a uniform bound for the order of group elements is finite. We prove a similar result for groups of area-preserving homeomorphisms without the hypothesis that the orders of group elements are powers of 2 provided there is an element of even order.
We study the group of almost-periodic homeomorphisms of the real line. Our main result states that an action of a finitely generated group on the real line without global fixed point is conjugated to an almost-periodic action without almost fixed point. This is equivalent to saying that the action on the real line can be compactified to an action on a 1-dimensional lamination of a compact space, without global fixed point. As an application we give an alternative proof of Witte's theorem: an amenable left orderable group is locally indicable.
In this work we study homeomorphisms of closed orientable surfaces homotopic to the identity, focusing on the existence of non-contractible periodic orbits. We show that, if $g$ is such a homeomorphism, and if $\hat g$ is its lift to the universal covering of $S$ that commutes with the deck transformations, then one of the following three conditions must be satisfied: (1) The set of fixed points for $\hat g$ projects to a closed subset $F$ which contains an essential continuum, (2) $g$ has non-contratible periodic points of every sufficiently large period, or (3) there exists an uniform bound …
