We give an equivalent characterisation for the existence of a semi-conjugacy to an irrational rotation for conservative homeomorphisms of the two-torus. This leads to an analogue of Poincare's classification of circle homeomorphisms for conservative toral homeomorphisms with unique rotation vector and a certain bounded mean motion property. For minimal toral homeomorphisms, the result extends to arbitrary dimensions. Further, we provide a basic classification for the dynamics of non-wandering toral homeomorphisms homotopic to the identitiy.

A characterization of annularity for area-preserving toral homeomorphisms

We prove that if an area-preserving homeomorphism of the torus in the homotopy class of the identity has a rotation set which is a nondegenerate vertical segment containing the origin, then there exists an essential invariant annulus. In particular, some lift to the universal covering has uniformly bounded displacement in the horizontal direction.

Toral or non locally connected minimal sets for suspensions of $R$-closed surface homeomorphisms

Let $M$ be an orientable connected closed surface and $f$ be an $R$-closed homeomorphism on $M$ which is isotopic to identity. Then the suspension of $f$ satisfies one of the following condition: 1) the closure of each element of it is minimal and toral. 2) there is a minimal set which is not locally connected. Moreover, we show that any positive iteration of an $R$-closed homeomorphism on a compact metrizable space is $R$-closed.

Stability of the rotation set of area-preserving toral homeomorphisms

We show that if the rotation set of a homeomorphism of the torus is stable under small perturbations of the dynamics, then it is a convex polygon with rational vertices. We also show that such homeomorphisms are $C^0$-generic and have bounded rotational deviations (even for pseudo-orbits). The results hold both in the area-preserving setting and in the general setting. When the rotation set is stable, we give explicit estimates on the type of rationals that may appear as vertices of rotation sets in terms of the stability constants.

Burnside problem for measure preserving groups of toral homeomorphisms and for 2-groups of toral homeomorphisms

A group $G$ is said to be periodic if for any $g\in G$ there exists a positive integer $n$ with $g^n=id$. We prove that a finitely generated periodic group of homeomorphisms on the 2-torus that preserves a measure $μ$ is finite. Moreover if the group consists in homeomorphisms isotopic to the identity, then it is abelian and acts freely on $\mathbb{T}^2$. In the Appendix, we show that every finitely generated 2-group of toral homeomorphisms is finite.

The concept of bounded mean motion for toral homeomorphisms

A conservative irrational pseudo-rotation of the two-torus is semi-conjugate to the irrational rotation if and only if it has the property of bounded mean motion [10]. (Here 'irrational pseudo-rotation' means a toral homeomorphism with uniquely defined, totally irrational rotation vector.) The aim of this note is to explore this concept some further. Strictly Toral Dynamics

This article deals with nonwandering (e.g. area-preserving) homeomorphisms of the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ which are homotopic to the identity and strictly toral, in the sense that they exhibit dynamical properties that are not present in homeomorphisms of the annulus or the plane. Transitivity of conservative toral endomorphisms

It is shown that if a non-invertible area preserving local homeomorphism on $\mathbb{T}^2$ is homotopic to a linear expanding or hyperbolic endomorphism, then it must be topologically transitive. This gives a complete characterization, in any smoothness category, of those homotopy classes of conservative endomorphisms that consist entirely of transitive maps.

Rational Polygons as Rotation Sets of Generic Homeomorphisms of the Two-Torus

We prove the existence of an open and dense set D\subset? Homeo0(T2) (set of toral homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity) such that the rotation set of any element in D is a rational polygon. We also extend this result to the set of axiom A dif- feomorphisms in Homeo0(T2). Further we observe the existence of minimal sets whose rotation set is a non-trivial segment, for an open set in Homeo0(T2).

The Franks-Misiurewicz conjecture for extensions of irrational rotations

We show that a toral homeomorphism which is homotopic to the identity and topologically semiconjugate to an irrational rotation of the circle is always a pseudo-rotation (i.e. its rotation set is a single point). In combination with recent results, this allows us to complete the study of the Franks-Misiurewicz conjecture in the minimal case.

New Rotation Sets in a Family of Torus Homeomorphisms

We construct a family $\{Φ_t\}_{t\in[0,1]}$ of homeomorphisms of the two-torus isotopic to the identity, for which all of the rotation sets $ρ(Φ_t)$ can be described explicitly.
