As was known to H. Poincare, an orientation preserving circle homeomorphism without periodic points is either minimal or has no dense orbits, and every orbit accumulates on the unique minimal set. In the first case the minimal set is the circle, in the latter case a Cantor set. In this paper we study a two-dimensional analogue of this classical result: we classify the minimal sets of non-resonant torus homeomorphisms; that is, torus homeomorphisms isotopic to the identity for which the rotation set is a point with rationally independent irrational coordinates.
Let f be a homeomorphism of the torus isotopic to the identity and suppose that there exists a periodic orbit with a non-zero rotation vector (p/q,r/q), then f has a topologically monotone periodic orbit with the same rotation vector.
We prove that, if $f$ is a homeomorphism of the two torus isotopic to the identity whose rotation set is a non-degenerate segment and $f$ has a periodic point, then it has uniformly bounded deviations in the direction perpendicular to the segment.
We provide an equivalent characterisation for the existence of one-dimensional irrational rotation factors of conservative torus homeomorphisms that are not eventually annular. It states that an area-preserving non-annular torus homeomorphism $f$ is semiconjugate to an irrational rotation $R_α$ of the circle if and only if there exists a well-defined speed of rotation in some rational direction on the torus, and the deviations from the constant rotation in this direction are uniformly bounded. By means of a counterexample, we also demonstrate that a similar characterisation does not hold for e…
We prove that a homeomorphism of the torus homotopic to the identity whose rotation set is reduced to a single totally irrational vector is chain-recurrent. In fact, we show that pseudo-orbits can be chosen with a small number of jumps, in particular, that the nonwandering set is weakly transitive. We give an example showing that the nonwandering set of such a homeomorphism may not be transitive.
Let $K_1$, $K_2$ $\subset$ $R^2$ be two convex, compact sets. We would like to know if there are commuting torus homeomorphisms $f$ and $h$ homotopic to the identity, with lifts $\tilde f$ and $\tilde h$, such that $K_1$ and $K_2$ are their rotation sets, respectively. In this work, we proof some cases where it cannot happen, assuming some restrictions on rotation sets.
We prove that for a torus homeomorphism isotopic to the identity and with a lift whose rotation set is an interval, either every rational point in the rotation set is realized by a periodic orbit, or there exists an annular, essential, periodic set. In the latter case we give a qualitative description of the dynamics.
We show that, if $f$ is a homeomorphism of the 2--torus isotopic to the identity, and its lift $\widetilde f$ is transitive, or even if it is transitive outside of the lift of the elliptic islands, then $(0,0)$ is in the interior of the rotation set of $\widetilde f.$ This proves a particular case of Boyland's conjecture.
It is well known that the rotation number of a circle homeomorphism defined by H. Poincaré allows to completely understand the dynamics of such a map from the topological point of view. In this paper, we collect some results concerning the existence of topological dynamical models associated to rotation sets of homeomorphisms of $\T^2$.
We provide a classification of minimal sets of homeomorphisms of the two-torus, in terms of the structure of their complement. We show that this structure is exactly one of the following types: (1) a disjoint union of topological disks, or (2) a disjoint union of essential annuli and topological disks, or (3) a disjoint union of one doubly essential component and bounded topological disks. Periodic bounded disks can only occur in type 3. This result provides a framework for more detailed investigations, and additional information on the torus homeomorphism allows to draw further conclusions. I…
This article deals with directional rotational deviations for non-wandering periodic point free homeomorphisms of the 2-torus which are homotopic to the identity. We prove that under mild assumptions, such a homeomorphism exhibits uniformly bounded rotational deviations in some direction if and only it leaves invariant a pseudo-foliation, a notion which is a slight generalization of classical one-dimensional foliations. To get these results, we introduce a novel object called $\tildeρ$-centralized skew-product and their associated stable sets at infinity.
We study the relationship between free curves and periodic points for torus homeomorphisms in the homotopy class of the identity. By free curve we mean a homotopically nontrivial simple closed curve that is disjoint from its image. We prove that every rational point in the rotation set is realized by a periodic point provided that there is no free curve and the rotation set has empty interior. This gives a topological version of a theorem of Franks. Using this result, and inspired by a theorem of Guillou, we prove a version of the Poincaré-Birkhoff Theorem for torus homeomorphisms: in the abse…
We prove the existence of an open and dense set D\subset? Homeo0(T2) (set of toral homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity) such that the rotation set of any element in D is a rational polygon. We also extend this result to the set of axiom A dif- feomorphisms in Homeo0(T2). Further we observe the existence of minimal sets whose rotation set is a non-trivial segment, for an open set in Homeo0(T2).
Let $f: \mathbb{T}^2 \to \mathbb{T}^2$ be a homeomorphism homotopic to the identity and $F: \mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^2$ a lift of $f$ such that the rotation set $ρ(F)$ is a line segment of rational slope containing a point in $\mathbb{Q}^2$. We prove that if $f$ is ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure on the torus and the average rotation vector (with respect to same measure) does not belong to $\mathbb{Q}^2$ then some power of $f$ is an annular homeomorphism.
In the context of the Franks-Misiurewicz Conjecture, we study homeomorphisms of the two-torus semiconjugate to an irrational rotation of the circle. As a special case, this conjecture asserts uniqueness of the rotation vector in this class of systems. We first characterise these maps by the existence of an invariant foliation by essential annular continua (essential subcontinua of the torus whose complement is an open annulus) which are permuted with irrational combinatorics. This result places the considered class close to skew products over irrational rotations. Generalising a well-known res…
We consider the rotation set $ρ(F)$ for a lift $F$ of an area preserving homeomorphism $f: \t^2\to \t^2$, which is homotopic to the identity. The relationship between this set and the existence of periodic points for $f$ is least well understood in the case when this set is a line segment. We show that in this case if a vector $v$ lies in $ρ(F)$ and has both co-ordinates rational, then there is a periodic point $x\in \t^2$ with the property that $$\frac{F^q(x_0)-x_0}q = v$$ where $x_0\in \re^2$ is any lift of $x$ and $q$ is the least period of $x$.
We construct different types of quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms with transitive but non-minimal dynamics. Concerning the recent Poincaré-like classification for this class of maps of Jaeger-Stark, we demonstrate that transitive but non-minimal behaviour can occur in each of the different cases. This closes one of the last gaps in the topological classification. Actually, we are able to get some transitive quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms with rather complicated minimal sets. For example, we show that, in some of the examples we construct, the unique minimal set is …
The goals of this paper are to obtain theoretical models of what happens when a computer calculates the rotation set of a homeomorphism, and to find a good algorithm to perform simulations of this rotation set. To do that we introduce the notion of observable rotation set, which takes into account the fact that we can only detect phenomenon appearing on positive Lebesgue measure sets; we also define the asymptotic discretized rotation set which in addition takes into account the fact that the computer calculates with a finite number of digits It appears that both theoretical results and simula…
In this paper we consider torus homeomorphisms $f$ homotopic to Dehn twists. We prove that if the vertical rotation set of $f$ is reduced to zero, then there exists a compact connected essential "horizontal" set K, invariant under $f$. In other words, if we consider the lift $\hat{f}$ of $f$ to the cylinder, which has zero vertical rotation number, then all points have uniformly bounded motion under iterates of $\hat{f}$. Also, we give a simple explicit condition which, when satisfied, implies that the vertical rotation set contains an interval and thus also implies positive topological entrop…
In this article, we describe all the group morphisms from the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the circle to the group of homeomorphisms of the annulus or of the torus.
We construct a family $\{Φ_t\}_{t\in[0,1]}$ of homeomorphisms of the two-torus isotopic to the identity, for which all of the rotation sets $ρ(Φ_t)$ can be described explicitly. We analyze the bifurcations and typical behavior of rotation sets in the family, providing insight into the general questions of toral rotation set bifurcations and prevalence. We show that there is a full measure subset of $[0,1]$, consisting of infinitely many mutually disjoint non-trivial closed intervals, on each of which the rotation set mode locks to a constant polygon with rational vertices; that the generic rot…
We study the relationship between transitivity and topological chaos for homeomorphisms of the two torus. We show that if a transitive homeomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^2$ is homotopic to the identity and has both a fixed point and a periodic point which is not fixed, then it has a topological horseshoe. We also show that if a transitive homeomorphims of $\mathbb{T}^2$ is homotopic to a Dehn twist, then either it is aperiodic or it has a topological horseshoe.
We study the rotation sets for homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity on the torus $\mathbb T^d$, $d\ge 2$. In the conservative setting, we prove that there exists a Baire residual subset of the set $\text{Homeo}_{0, λ}(\mathbb T^2)$ of conservative homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity so that the set of points with wild pointwise rotation set is a Baire residual subset in $\mathbb T^2$, and that it carries full topological pressure and full metric mean dimension. Moreover, we prove that for every $d\ge 2$ the rotation set of $C^0$-generic conservative homeomorphisms on $\mathbb T^d$ is …
This paper studies homeomorphisms of surfaces isotopic to the identity by means of purely topological methods and Brouwer theory. The main development is a novel theory of orbit forcing using maximal isotopies and transverse foliations. This allows us to derive new proofs for some known results as well as some new applications, among which we note the following: we extend Franks and Handel's classification of zero entropy maps of $S^2$ for non-wandering homeomorphisms; we show that if $f$ is a Hamiltonian homeomorphism of the annulus, then the rotation set of $f$ is either a singleton or it co…
We classify minimal sets of (closed and oriented) hyperbolic surface homeomorphisms by studying the connected components of their complement. This extends the classification given by F. Kwakkel, T.Jäger and A. Passeggi in the torus. The given classification is studied in the non-wandering setting and in light of the Nielsen-Thurston Theory.
We prove that if an area-preserving homeomorphism of the torus in the homotopy class of the identity has a rotation set which is a nondegenerate vertical segment containing the origin, then there exists an essential invariant annulus. In particular, some lift to the universal covering has uniformly bounded displacement in the horizontal direction.
We prove that if a homeomorphism of a closed orientable surface S has no wandering points and leaves invariant a compact, connected set K which contains no periodic points, then either K=S and S is a torus, or $K$ is the intersection of a decreasing sequence of annuli. A version for non-orientable surfaces is given.
We prove that any minimal $2$-torus homeomorphism which is isotopic to the identity and whose rotation set is not just a point exhibits uniformly bounded rotational deviations on the perpendicular direction to the rotation set. As a consequence of this, we show that any such homeomorphism is topologically mixing and we prove Franks-Misiurewicz conjecture under the assumption of minimality.
A conservative irrational pseudo-rotation of the two-torus is semi-conjugate to the irrational rotation if and only if it has the property of bounded mean motion [10]. (Here 'irrational pseudo-rotation' means a toral homeomorphism with uniquely defined, totally irrational rotation vector.) The aim of this note is to explore this concept some further. For instance, we provide an example which shows that the preceding statement does not hold in the non-conservative case. Further, we collect a number of observations concerning the case where the bounded mean motion property fails. In particular, …
We prove that the family of measured dynamical systems which can be realised as uniquely ergodic minimal homeomorphisms on a given manifold (of dimension at least two) is stable under measured extension. As a corollary, any ergodic system with an irrational eigenvalue is isomorphic to a uniquely ergodic minimal homeomorphism on the two-torus. The proof uses the following improvement of Weiss relative version of Jewett-Krieger theorem: any extension between two ergodic systems is isomorphic to a skew-product on Cantor sets.
Rotation vectors, as defined for homeomorphisms of the torus that are isotopic to the identity, are generalized to such homeomorphisms of any complete Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature. These generalized rotation vectors are shown to exist for almost every orbit of such a dynamical system with respect to any invariant measure with compact support. The concept is then extended to flows and, as an application, it is shown how non-null rotation vectors can be used to construct a measurable semi-conjugacy between a given flow and the geodesic flow of a manifold.
We prove that the polynomial entropy of an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the circle equals 1 when the homeomorphism is not conjugate to a rotation and that it is 0 otherwise. In a second part we prove that the polynomial entropy of a flow on the two dimensional torus associated with a $C^1$ nonvanishing vector field is less that $1$. We moreover prove that when the flow possesses periodic orbits its polynomial entropy equals 1 unless it is conjugate to a rotation (in this last case, the polynomial entropy is zero).
We show that if the rotation set of a homeomorphism of the torus is stable under small perturbations of the dynamics, then it is a convex polygon with rational vertices. We also show that such homeomorphisms are $C^0$-generic and have bounded rotational deviations (even for pseudo-orbits). The results hold both in the area-preserving setting and in the general setting. When the rotation set is stable, we give explicit estimates on the type of rationals that may appear as vertices of rotation sets in terms of the stability constants.
Mary Rees has constructed a minimal homeomorphism of the 2-torus with positive topological entropy. This homeomorphism f is obtained by enriching the dynamics of an irrational rotation R. We improve Rees construction, allowing to start with any homeomorphism R instead of an irrational rotation and to control precisely the measurable dynamics of f. This yields in particular the following result: Any compact manifold of dimension d>1 which carries a minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphism also carries a minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphism with positive topological entropy. More generally, give…
A homeomorphism of the $2$-torus with Lefschetz number different from zero has a fixed point. We give a version of this result for nilpotent groups of diffeomorphisms. We prove that a nilpotent group of $2$-torus diffeomorphims has finite orbits when the group has some element with Lefschetz number different from zero.
The aim of this short note is to explain how the arguments of the "closing lemma with time control" of F. Abdenur and S. Crovisier (arXiv:1111.4206) can be used to answer Question 1 of the article "Instability for the rotation set of homeomorphisms of the torus homotopic to the identity" of S. Addas-Zanata.
Let $f:{\rm T^2\rightarrow T^2}$ be a homeomorphism homotopic to the identity, $\widetilde{f}:{\rm I}\negthinspace {\rm R^2\rightarrow I} \negthinspace {\rm R^2}$ be a fixed lift and $ρ(\widetilde{f})$ be its rotation set, which we assume to have interior. We also assume that some rational point $(\frac pq,\frac rq)\in \partial ρ(\widetilde{f})$ and we want to understand how stable this situation is. To be more precise, we want to know if it is possible to find two different homeomorphisms, which are arbitrarily small $C^0$-perturbations of $f,$ denoted $f_1$ and $f_2,$ in a way that $(\frac p…
Let $f\colon M\to M$ be an expansive homeomorphism with dense topologically hyperbolic periodic points, $M$ a compact manifold. Then there is a local product structure in an open and dense subset of $M$. Moreover, if some topologically hyperbolic periodic point has codimension one, then this local product structure is uniform. In particular, we conclude that the homeomorphism is conjugated to a linear Anosov diffeomorphism of a torus.
In this article, we consider the dynamics in a neighborhood of a quasi-periodic torus which is invariant by a Hamiltonian flow, we discuss several notions of stability and we prove several results of instability when the frequency of the invariant torus is resonant.
We study the coarse geometry of the moduli space of dilation tori with two singularities and the dynamical properties of the action of the Teichmuller flow on this moduli space. This leads to a proof that the vertical foliation of a dilation torus is almost always Morse-Smale. As a corollary, we get that the generic piecewise affine circle homeomorphism with two break points -with respect to the Lebesgue measure- is Morse-Smale.
In this article we study minimal homeomorphisms(all orbits are dense) of the tori $T^{n},$ $n<5.$ The linear part of a homeomorphism $ϕ$ of $T^{n}$ is the linear mapping $L$ induced by $ϕ$ on the first homology group of $T^{n}$. It follows from the Lefschetz fixed point theorem that 1 is an eigenvalue of $L$ if $ϕ$ minimal. We show that if $ϕ$ is minimal and $n<5$ then $L$ is quasi-unipontent, i.e., all the eigenvalues of $L$ are roots of unity and conversely if $L\in GL(n,\Z)$ is quasi-unipotent and 1 is an eigenvalue of $L$ then there exists a $ C^{\infty}$ minimal skew-product diffeomorphis…
Sharkovskii proved that the existence of a periodic orbit in a one-dimensional dynamical system implies existence of infinitely many periodic orbits. We obtain an analog of Sharkovskii's theorem for periodic orbits of shear homeomorphisms of the torus. This is done by obtaining a dynamical order relation on the set of simple orbits and simple pairs. We then use this order relation for a global analysis for a quantum chaotic physical system called the kicked accelerated particle.
Poincare's classification of the dynamics of homeomorphisms of the circle is one of the earliest, but still one of the most elegant, classification results in dynamical systems. Here we generalize this to quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms, which have been the subject of considerable interest in recent years. Herman already showed two decades ago that a unique rotation number exists for all orbits in the quasiperiodically forced case. However, unlike the unforced case, no a priori bounds exist for the deviations from the average rotation. This plays an important role in the attempt…
We show that for each natural $p\geq 2$, the Lefschetz fixed point theorem is optimal when applied to ${\Bbb Z}^{p}$-actions by homeomorphisms on the three dimensional torus ${\Bbb T}^3$. More precisely, we show that for a spectrally unitary ${\Bbb Z}^p$-action ${\bf A}$ on the first homology group $H_1({\Bbb T}^3,{\Bbb Z})$ with trivial fixed point set, there exists a free ${\Bbb Z}^p$-action by real analytic diffeomorphisms of ${\Bbb T}^3$ whose induced ${\Bbb Z}^p$-action on $H_1({\Bbb T}^3,{\Bbb Z})$ is the action ${\bf A}$. In particular, we establish the normal form for this type of acti…
We give a new proof and extend a result of J. Kwapisz: whenever a set C is realized as the rotation set of some torus homeomorphism, the image of C under certain projective transformations is also realized as a rotations set.
We study the rotational behaviour on minimal sets of torus homeomorphisms and show that the associated rotation sets can be any type of line segments as well as non-convex and even plane-separating continua. This shows that restrictions holding for rotation sets on the whole torus are not valid on minimal sets. The proof uses a construction of rotational horseshoes by Kwapisz to transfer the problem to a symbolic level, where the desired rotational behaviour is implemented by means of suitable irregular Toeplitz sequences.
We study the action of the homeomorphism group of a surface $S$ on the fine curve graph ${\mathcal C }^\dagger(S)$. While the definition of $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ parallels the classical curve graph for mapping class groups, we show that the dynamics of the action of ${\mathrm{Homeo}}(S)$ on $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ is much richer: homeomorphisms induce parabolic isometries in addition to elliptics and hyperbolics, and all positive reals are realized as asymptotic translation lengths. When the surface $S$ is a torus, we relate the dynamics of the action of a homeomorphism on $\mathcal{C}^\da…
We present a dichotomy for surface homeomorphisms in the isotopy class of the identity. We show that, in the absence of a degenerate fixed point set, either there exists a uniform bound on the diameter of orbits of non-wandering points for the lifted dynamics in the universal covering space, or the map has non-contractible periodic points. We then use this new tool to characterize the dynamics of area preserving homeomorphisms of the torus without non-contractible periodic points, showing that if the fixed point set is non-degenerate, then either the lifted dynamics is uniformly bounded, or th…
In this paper we focus on compacta $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ which possess a neighbourhood basis that consists of nested solid tori $T_i$. We call these sets toroidal. In \cite{hecyo1} we defined the genus of a toroidal set as a generalization of the classical notion of genus from knot theory. Here we introduce the self-geometric index of a toroidal set $K$, which captures how each torus $T_{i+1}$ winds inside the previous $T_i$. We use this index in conjunction with the genus to approach the problem of whether a toroidal set can be realized as an attractor for a flow or a homeomorphism of $\…
In 1991 Llibre and MacKay proved that if $f$ is a 2-torus homeomorphism isotopic to identity and the rotation set of $f$ has a non empty interior then $f$ has positive topological entropy. Here, we give a converselike theorem. We show that the interior of the rotation set of a 2-torus $C^{1+ α}$ diffeomorphism isotopic to identity of positive topological entropy is not empty, under the additional hypotheses that $f$ is topologically transitive and irreducible. We also give examples that show that these hypotheses are necessary.
We make a detailed numerical study of a three dimensional dissipative vector field derived from the normal form for a cusp-Hopf bifurcation. The vector field exhibits a Neimark-Sacker bifurcation giving rise to an attracting invariant torus. Our main goals are to (A) follow the torus via parameter continuation from its appearance to its disappearance, studying its dynamics between these events, and to (B) study the embeddings of the stable/unstable manifolds of the hyperbolic equilibrium solutions over this parameter range, focusing on their role as transport barriers and their participation i…
