We prove that the family of measured dynamical systems which can be realised as uniquely ergodic minimal homeomorphisms on a given manifold (of dimension at least two) is stable under measured extension. As a corollary, any ergodic system with an irrational eigenvalue is isomorphic to a uniquely ergodic minimal homeomorphism on the two-torus. The proof uses the following improvement of Weiss relative version of Jewett-Krieger theorem: any extension between two ergodic systems is isomorphic to a skew-product on Cantor sets.
Mary Rees has constructed a minimal homeomorphism of the 2-torus with positive topological entropy. This homeomorphism f is obtained by enriching the dynamics of an irrational rotation R. We improve Rees construction, allowing to start with any homeomorphism R instead of an irrational rotation and to control precisely the measurable dynamics of f. This yields in particular the following result: Any compact manifold of dimension d>1 which carries a minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphism also carries a minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphism with positive topological entropy. More generally, give…
We study invariant ergodic measures for quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms and derive that either the system is uniquely ergodic or any such measure is associated to some invariant multigraph.
We study the dynamics of piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms from the point of view of their entropy. Under the assumption of positive topological entropy, we establish the existence of finitely many ergodic and invariant probability measures maximizing entropy and prove a multiplicative lower bound for the number of periodic points. This is intended as a step towards the understanding of surface diffeomorphisms. We proceed by building a jump transformation, using not first returns but carefully selected "good" returns to dispense with Markov partitions. We control these good returns throu…
For any irrational number $α$, there exists an ergodic area preserving homeomorphism of the closed annulus which is isotopic to the identitity, admits no compact invariant set contained in the interior of the annulus, and has the rotation number $α$.
Let $K$ be the Cantor set. We prove that arbitrarily close to a homeomorphism $T:K\rightarrow K$ there exists a homeomorphism $\widetilde T:K\rightarrow K$ such that the $α$-limit and the $ω$-limit of every orbit is a periodic orbit. We also prove that arbitrarily close to an endomorphism $T:K\rightarrow K$ there exists an endomorphism $\widetilde T:K\rightarrow K$ close to $T$ such that every orbit is finally periodic.
We study the ergodic properties of generic continuous dynamical systems on compact manifolds. As a main result we prove that generic homeomorphisms have convergent Birkhoff averages under continuous observables at Lebesgue almost every point. In spite of this, when the underlying manifold has dimension greater than one, generic homeomorphisms have no physical measure --- a somewhat strange result which stands in sharp contrast to current trends in generic differentiable dynamics. Similar results hold for generic continuous maps. To further explore the mysterious behaviour of $C^0$ generic dyna…
This paper is a survey devoted to the study of probability and infinite ergodic invariant measures for aperiodic homeomorphisms of a Cantor set. We focus mostly on the cases when a homeomorphism has either a unique ergodic invariant measure or finitely many such measures (finitely ergodic homeomorphisms). Since every Cantor dynamical system $(X,T)$ can be realized as a Vershik map acting on the path space of a Bratteli diagram, we use combinatorial methods developed in symbolic dynamics and Bratteli diagrams during the last decade to study the simplex of invariant measures.
We study the circle homeomorphisms extensions over a strictly ergodic homeomorphism. Under a very mild restriction, we show that the fibered rotation number is locally constant on an open and dense subset. In the complement of this set, we found a dense subset in which every map is conjugate to a direct product. Our result provides a generalisation of Avila-Bochi-Damanik's result on ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})-$cocycles, and Jager-Wang-Zhou's result on quasi-periodically forced maps, to a broader setting.
A Borel system $(X,S)$ is `almost Borel universal' if any free Borel dynamical system $(Y,T)$ of strictly lower entropy is isomorphic to a Borel subsystem of $(X,S)$, after removing a null set. We obtain and exploit a new sufficient condition for a topological dynamical system to be almost Borel universal. We use our main result to deduce various conclusions and answer a number of questions. Along with additional results, we prove that a `generic' homeomorphism of a compact manifold of topological dimension at least two can model any ergodic transformation, that non-uniform specification impli…
Let $X$ be an infinite compact metrizable space, and let $σ: X\to X$ be a minimal homeomorphism. Suppose that $(X, σ)$ has zero mean topological dimension. The associated C*-algebra $A=\mathrm{C}(X)\rtimes_σ\mathbb Z$ is shown to absorb the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal Z$ tensorially, i.e., $A\cong A\otimes\mathcal Z$. This implies that $A$ is classifiable when $(X, σ)$ is uniquely ergodic. Moreover, without any assumption on the mean dimension, it is shown that $A\otimes A$ always absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra.
Consider a homeomorphism $f$ defined on a compact metric space $X$ and a continuous map $ϕ\colon X \to \mathbb{R}$. We provide an abstract criterion, called \emph{control at any scale with a long sparse tail} for a point $x\in X$ and the map $ϕ$, that guarantees that any weak$\ast$ limit measure $μ$ of the Birkhoff average of Dirac measures $\frac1n\sum_0^{n-1}δ(f^i(x))$ is such that $μ$-almost every point $y$ has a dense orbit in $X$ and the Birkhoff average of $ϕ$ along the orbit of $y$ is zero. As an illustration of the strength of this criterion, we prove that the diffeomorphisms with nonh…
Given a linear cocycle over an ergodic homeomorphism on a compact metric space, we show that the existence of a uniform gap between the $p$-th and $(p+1)$-th Lyapunov exponent on a $C^0$-neighbourhood implies the existence of a dominated splitting of index $p$.
Let X be an infinite, compact, metrizable space of finite covering dimension and h a minimal homeomorphism of X. We prove that the crossed product of C(X) by h absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially and has finite nuclear dimension. As a consequence, these algebras are determined up to isomorphism by their graded ordered K-theory under the necessary condition that their projections separate traces. This result applies, in particular, to those crossed products arising from uniquely ergodic homeomorphisms.
Let $\{f_t\}_{t\in(1,2]}$ be the family of core tent maps of slopes $t$. The parameterized Barge-Martin construction yields a family of disk homeomorphisms $Φ_t\colon D^2\to D^2$, having transitive global attractors $Λ_t$ on which $Φ_t$ is topologically conjugate to the natural extension of $f_t$. The unique family of absolutely continuous invariant measures for $f_t$ induces a family of ergodic $Φ_t$-invariant measures $ν_t$, supported on the attractors $Λ_t$. We show that this family $ν_t$ varies weakly continuously, and that the measures $ν_t$ are physical with respect to a weakly continuou…
This paper investigates the existence of Denjoy minimal sets and, more generally, strictly ergodic sets in the dynamics of iterated homeomorphisms. It is shown that for the full two-shift, the collection of such invariant sets with the weak topology contains topological balls of all finite dimensions. One implication is an analogous result that holds for diffeomorphisms with transverse homoclinic points. It is also shown that the union of Denjoy minimal sets is dense in the two-shift and that the set of unique probability measures supported on these sets is weakly dense in the set of all shift…
This paper presents a survey of recent and not so recent results concerning the study of smooth homeomorphisms of the circle with a finite number of non-flat critical points, an important topic in the area of One-dimensional Dynamics. We focus on the analysis of the fine geometric structure of orbits of such dynamical systems, as well as on certain ergodic-theoretic and complex-analytic aspects of the subject. Finally, we review some conjectures and open questions in this field.
Two given orbits of a minimal circle homeomorphism $f$ are said to be geometrically equivalent if there exists a quasisymmetric circle homeomorphism identifying both orbits and commuting with $f$. By a well-known theorem due to Herman and Yoccoz, if $f$ is a smooth diffeomorphism with Diophantine rotation number, then any two orbits are geometrically equivalent. As it follows from the a-priori bounds of Herman and Swiatek, the same holds if $f$ is a critical circle map with rotation number of bounded type. By contrast, we prove in the present paper that if $f$ is a critical circle map whose ro…
Let X be an infinite compact metric space, α: X \to X a minimal homeomorphism, u the unitary implementing αin the transformation group C*-algebra, and S a class of separable nuclear C*-algebras that contains all unital hereditary C*-subalgebras of C*-algebras in S. Motivated by the success of tracial approximation by finite dimensional C*-algebras as an abstract characterization of classifiable C*-algebras and the idea that classification results for C*-algebras tensored with UHF algebras can be used to derive classification results up to tensoring with the Jiang-Su algebra Z, we prove that th…
