We use twisted sheaves and their moduli spaces to study the Brauer group of a scheme. In particular, we (1) show how twisted methods can be efficiently used to re-prove the basic facts about the Brauer group and cohomological Brauer group (including Gabber's theorem that they coincide for a separated union of two affine schemes), (2) give a new proof of de Jong's period-index theorem for surfaces over algebraically closed fields, and (3) prove an analogous result for surfaces over finite fields. We also include a reduction of all period-index problems for Brauer groups of function fields over algebraically closed fields to characteristic 0, which (among other things) extends de Jong's result to include classes of period divisible by the characteristic of the base field. Finally, we use the theory developed here to give counterexamples to a standard type of local-to-global conjecture for geometrically rational varieties over the function field of the projective plane.
We study stacks of slope-semistable twisted sheaves on orbisurfaces with projective coarse spaces and prove that in certain cases they have many of the asymptotic properties enjoyed by the moduli of slope-semistable sheaves on smooth projective surfaces.
We construct an equivalence between the derived category of sheaves on an elliptic threefold without a section and a derived category of twisted sheaves (modules over an Azumaya algebra) on any small resolution of its relative Jacobian.
We construct the moduli of twisted sheaves on a projective variety. Then we generalize known results on the moduli space of usual sheaves on a K3 surface to the twisted case. Thus we consider the non-emptyness, the deformation type and the Fourier-Mukai transformation. As an application of our results, Daniel Huybrechts and Paolo Stellari prove Caldararu's conjecture.
We provide a definition of Tanaka-Thomas's Vafa-Witten invariants for étale gerbes over smooth projective surfaces using the moduli spaces of $μ_r$-gerbe twisted sheaves and Higgs sheaves. Twisted sheaves and their moduli are naturally used to study the period-index theorem for the corresponding $μ_r$-gerbe in the Brauer group of the surfaces. Deformation and obstruction theory of the twisted sheaves and Higgs sheaves behave like general sheaves and Higgs sheaves. We define virtual fundamental classes on the moduli spaces and define the twisted Vafa-Witten invariants using virtual localization…
G. Pareschi and M. Popa give criterions for global generations and surjectivity of multiplication maps of global sections of coherent sheaves on abelian varieties in the theory of M-regularity. In this paper, we generalize some of their criterions via the M-regularity of $\mathbb{Q}$-twisted sheaves. As an application, we show that the M-regularity of a suitable $\mathbb{Q}$-twisted sheaf implies property $(N_p)$ and jet-ampleness for ample line bundles on abelian varieties.
We generalize Kollár's conjecture (including torsion freeness, injectivity theorem, vanishing theorem and decomposition theorem) to Saito's $S$-sheaves twisted by a $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor. This gives a uniform treatment for various kinds of Kollár's package in different topics in complex geometry. As a consequence we prove Kollár's package of pluricanonical bundles twisted by a certain multiplier ideal sheaf. The method of the present paper is $L^2$-theoretic.
We give a generalization of Gabriel's Theorem on coherent sheaves to the case of coherent twisted sheaves on a smooth variety X over a field k. We show that the category Coh(X,α) determines the scheme structure of X for αin the Brauer group of X, and that any equivalence between Coh(X,α) and Coh(Y,β) induces an isomorphism between X and Y. In conclusion we prove the saturatedness of D^b(X,α).
We use an idea of Rosenberg to prove a reconstruction theorem for abelian categories of alpha-twisted quasi-coherent sheaves on quasi-compact and quasi-separated schemes X when alpha is in the Brauer group of X. By applying the work of Toën on derived Azumaya algebras, we give a proof of Căldăraru's conjecture.
We study moduli of semistable twisted sheaves on smooth proper morphisms of algebraic spaces. In the case of a relative curve or surface, we prove results on the structure of these spaces. For curves, they are essentially isomorphic to spaces of semistable vector bundles. In the case of surfaces, we show (under a mild hypothesis on the twisting class) that the spaces are asympotically geometrically irreducible, normal, generically smooth, and l.c.i. over the base. We also develop general tools necessary for these results: the theory of associated points and purity of sheaves on Artin stacks, t…
Given a smooth projective toric variety $X_Σ$ of complex dimension $n$, Fang-Liu-Treumann-Zaslow \cite{FLTZ} showed that there is a quasi-embedding of the differential graded (dg) derived category of coherent sheaves $Coh(X_Σ)$ into the dg derived category of constructible sheaves on a torus $Sh(T^n, Λ_Σ)$. Recently, Kuwagaki \cite{Ku2} proved that the quasi-embedding is a quasi-equivalence, and generalized the result to toric stacks. Here we give a different proof in the smooth projective case, using non-characteristic deformation of sheaves to find twisted polytope sheaves that co-represent …
Let X be a normal projective variety, and let A be an ample Cartier divisor on X. We prove that the twisted cotangent sheaf $Ω_X \otimes A$ is generically nef with respect to the polarisation A unless X is a projective space. As an application we prove a Kobayashi-Ochiai theorem for foliations: if $F \subsetneq T_X$ is a foliation of rank r such that $det F \equiv i_F A$, then we have $i_F \leq r$.
We study the geometry of some moduli spaces of twisted sheaves on K3 surfaces. In particular we introduce induced automorphisms from a K3 surface on moduli spaces of twisted sheaves on this K3 surface. As an application we prove the unirationality of moduli spaces of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds of $K3^{[2]}$-type admitting non symplectic involutions with invariant lattices $U(2)\oplus D_4(-1)$ or $U(2)\oplus E_8(-2)$. This complements the results obtained in [Mongardi and Wandel 2015], [Bossiere et al 2016], and the results from [arXiv:1603.00403] about the geometry of IHS fou…
Due to a theorem by Orlov every exact fully faithful functor between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is of Fourier-Mukai type. We extend this result to the case of bounded derived categories of twisted coherent sheaves and at the same time we weaken the hypotheses on the functor. As an application we get a complete description of the exact functors between the abelian categories of twisted coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties.
Stacks were introduced by Grothendieck and Giraud and are, roughly speaking, sheaves of categories. Kashiwara developed the theory of twisted modules, which are objects of stacks locally equivalent to stacks of modules over sheaves of rings. In this paper we recall these notions, and we develop the formalism of operations for stacks of twisted modules. As an application, we state a twisted version of an adjunction formula which is of use in the theory of integral transforms for sheaves and D-modules.
We study the depth properties of certain direct image sheaves on normal varieties. Let $f: Y\rightarrow X$ be a proper morphism of relative dimension $d$ from a smooth variety onto a normal variety such that the preimage $E$ of the singular locus of $X$ is a divisor. We show that for any integer $m>0$, the higher direct image $R^df_*ω^{\otimes m}_Y(aE)$ modulo the torsion subsheaf is $S_2$, provided that $a$ is sufficiently large. In case $f$ is birational, we give criteria on $a$ for the direct image $f_*ω_Y(aE)$ to coincide with $ω_X$. We also introduce an index measuring the singularities o…
In general, if M is a moduli space of stable sheaves on X, there is a unique alpha in the Brauer group of M such that a pi_M^* alpha^{-1}-twisted universal sheaf exists on X times M. In this paper we study the situation when X and M are K3 surfaces, and we identify alpha in terms of Mukai's map between the cohomology of X and of M (defined by means of a quasi-universal sheaf). We prove that the derived category of sheaves on X and the derived category of alpha-twisted sheaves on M are equivalent. This suggests a conjecture which describes, in terms of Hodge isometries of lattices, when derived…
We study twisted vector bundles of infinite rank on gerbes, giving a new spin on Grothendieck's famous problem on the equality of the Brauer group and cohomological Brauer group. We show that the relaxed version of the question has an affirmative answer in many, but not all, cases, including for any algebraic space with the resolution property and any algebraic space obtained by pinching two closed subschemes of a projective scheme. We also discuss some possible theories of infinite rank Azumaya algebras, consider a new class of "very positive" infinite rank vector bundles on projective variet…
We establish a version of Kashiwara's theorem for twisted sheaves of Berthelot's arithmetic differential operators for a closed immersion between smooth p-adic formal schemes. As an application, we construct simple modules for crystalline distribution algebras of reductive groups using the twisted version of the crystalline localisation theorem.
We prove that the Fano variety of lines of a generic cubic fourfold containing a plane is isomorphic to a moduli space of twisted stable complexes on a K3 surface. On the other hand, we show that the Fano varieties are always birational to moduli spaces of twisted stable coherent sheaves on a K3 surface. The moduli spaces of complexes and of sheaves are related by wall-crossing in the derived category of twisted sheaves on the corresponding K3 surface.
Given a double quiver, we study homological algebra of twisted quiver sheaves with the moment map relation using the short exact sequence of Crawley-Boevey, Holland, Gothen, and King. Then in a certain one-parameter space of the stability conditions, we obtain a wall-crossing formula for the generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the abelian category of framed twisted quiver sheaves on a smooth projective curve. To do so, we closely follow the approach of Chuang, Diaconescu, and Pan in the ADHM quiver case, which makes use of the theory of Joyce and Song. The invariants virtually count fra…
We prove that the "Thaddeus flips" of $L$-twisted sheaves constructed by Matsuki and Wentworth can be obtained via Bridgeland wall-crossing. Similarly, we realize the change of polarization for moduli spaces of 1-dimensional Gieseker semistable sheaves on a surface by varying a family of stability conditions.
We give formulas for the extension groups between tautological sheaves and more general between tautological objects twisted by a determinant line bundle on the Hilbert scheme of points on a smooth quasi-projective surface. We do this using L. Scala's results about the image of tautological sheaves under the Bridgeland-King-Reid equivalence. We also compute the Yoneda products in terms of these formulas.
We generalize the multiple cover formula of Y. Toda (proved by Maulik-Thomas) for counting invariants for semistable coherent sheaves on local K3 surfaces to semistable twisted sheaves over twisted local K3 surfaces. The formula has an application to prove any rank S-duality conjecture for K3 surfaces.
Let G be a simple simply-connected group over an algebraically closed field k, X be a smooth connected projective curve over k. In this paper we develop the theory of geometric Eisenstein series on the moduli stack Bun_G of G-torsors on X in the setting of the quantum geometric Langlands program (for étale l-adic sheaves) in analogy with [3]. We calculate the intersection cohomology sheaf on the version of Drinfeld compactification in our twisted setting. In the case G=SL_2 we derive some results about the Fourier coefficients of our Eisenstein series. In the case of G=SL_2 and X=P^1 we also c…
In this article, we prove that a tame twisted K3 surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic has only finitely many tame twisted Fourier-Mukai partners and we give a counting formula in case we have an ordinary tame untwisted K3 surface. We also show that every tame twisted Fourier Mukai partner of a K3 surface of finite height is a moduli space of twisted sheaves over it.
We use twisted Fourier-Mukai transforms to study the relation between an abelian fibration on a holomorphic symplectic manifold and its dual fibration. Our reasoning leads to an equivalence between the derived category of coherent sheaves on one space and the derived category of twisted sheaves on the other space.
We use twisted sheaves to study the problem of index reduction for Brauer classes. In general terms, this problem may be phrased as follows: given a field $k$, a $k$-variety $X$, and a class $α\in \Br(k)$, compute the index of the class $α_{k(X)} \in \Br(X)$ obtained from $α$ by extension of scalars to $k(X)$. We give a general method for computing index reduction which refines classical results of Schofield and van den Bergh. When $X$ is a curve of genus 1, we use Atiyah's theorem on the structure of stable vector bundles with integral slope to show that our formula simplifies dramatically, g…
Let $X$ be a scheme, proper over a commutative noetherian ring $A$. We introduce the concept of an ample filter of invertible sheaves on $X$ and generalize the most important equivalent criteria for ampleness of an invertible sheaf. We also prove the Theorem of the Base for $X$ and generalize Serre's Vanishing Theorem. We then generalize results for twisted homogeneous coordinate rings which were previously known only when $X$ was projective over an algebraically closed field. Specifically, we show that the concepts of left and right $σ$-ampleness are equivalent and that the associated twisted…
Let X be an algebraic variety with an action of an algebraic group G. Suppose X has a full exceptional collection of sheaves, and these sheaves are invariant under the action of the group. We construct a semiorthogonal decomposition of bounded derived category of G-equivariant coherent sheaves on X into components, equivalent to derived categories of twisted representations of the group. If the group is finite or reductive over the algebraically closed field of zero characteristic, this gives a full exceptional collection in the derived equivariant category. We apply our results to particular …
Let X be a smooth proper variety over the quotient field of a Henselian discrete valuation ring with algebraically closed residue field of characteristic p. We show that for any coherent sheaf E on X, the index of X divides the Euler-Poincaré characteristic χ(X,E) if p=0 or p>dim(X)+1. If 0<p\leq dim(X)+1, the prime-to-p part of the index of X divides χ(X,E). Combining this with the Hattori-Stong theorem yields an analogous result concerning the divisibility of the cobordism class of X by the index of X. As a corollary, rationally connected varieties over the maximal unramified extension of a …
We introduce and study kernel algebras, i.e., algebras in the category of sheaves on a square of a scheme, where the latter category is equipped with a monoidal structure via a natural convolution operation. We show that many interesting categories, such as D-modules, equivariant sheaves and their twisted versions, arise as categories of modules over kernel algebras. We develop the techniques of constructing derived equivalences between these module categories. As one application we generalize the results of math.AG/9901009 concerning modules over algebras of twisted differential operators on …
In this paper we study the homotopy limits of cosimplicial diagrams of dg-categories. We first give an explicit construction of the totalization of such a diagram and then show that the totalization agrees with the homotopy limit in the following two cases: (1) the complexes of sheaves of $\mathcal O$-modules on the Čech nerve of an open cover of a ringed space $(X, \mathcal O)$; (2) the complexes of sheaves on the simplicial nerve of a discrete group $G$ acting on a space. The explicit models we obtain in this way are twisted complexes as well as their $D$-module and $G$-equivariant versions.…
In this paper we extend previous work on calculating massless boundary Ramond sector spectra of open strings to include cases with nonzero flat B fields. In such cases, D-branes are no longer well-modelled precisely by sheaves, but rather they are replaced by `twisted' sheaves, reflecting the fact that gauge transformations of the B field act as affine translations of the Chan-Paton factors. As in previous work, we find that the massless boundary Ramond sector states are counted by Ext groups -- this time, Ext groups of twisted sheaves. As before, the computation of BRST cohomology relies on p…
We introduce a notion of Gieseker stability for coherent sheaves on tame Deligne-Mumford stacks with projective moduli scheme and some chosen generating sheaf on the stack in the sense of Olsson and Starr \cite{MR2007396}. We prove that this stability condition is open, and pure dimensional semistable sheaves form a bounded family. We explicitly construct the moduli stack of semistable sheaves as a finite type global quotient, and study the moduli scheme of stable sheaves and its natural compactification in the same spirit as the seminal paper of Simpson \cite{MR1307297}. With this general mac…
We study the Hodge theory of twisted derived categories and its relation to the period-index problem. Our main contribution is the development of a theory of twisted Mukai structures for topologically trivial Brauer classes on arbitrary smooth proper varieties and in families. As applications, we construct Hodge classes whose algebraicity would imply period-index bounds; construct new counterexamples to the integral Hodge conjecture on Severi-Brauer varieties; and prove the integral Hodge conjecture for derived categories of Deligne-Mumford surfaces.
By the description due to Mukai and Iliev, a smooth prime Fano threefold X of genus 9 is associated to a surface P(V), ruled over a smooth plane quartic Gamma. We use Kuznetsov's integral functor to study rank-2 stable sheaves on X with odd determinant. For each c_2 \geq 7, we prove that a component of their moduli space M_X(2,1,c_2) is birational to a Brill-Noether locus of bundles on Gamma having enough sections when twisted by V. Moreover we prove that M_X(2,1,7) is isomorphic to the blowing-up of the Picard variety Pic^2(Gamma) along the curve parametrizing lines contained in X.
In this paper we study twisted complexes on a ringed space and prove that it gives a new dg-enhancement of the derived category of perfect complexes on that space. A twisted complex is a collection of locally defined sheaves together with the homotopic gluing data. In this paper we construct a dg-functor from twisted complexes to perfect complexes, which turns out to be a dg-enhancement. This new enhancement has the advantage of being completely geometric and it comes directly from the definition of perfect complex . In addition we will talk about some applications and further topics around tw…
A semiorthogonal decomposition for the bounded derived category (the category of perfect complexes in a non smooth case) of coherent sheaves on a Brauer Severi scheme is given. It relies on bounded derived categories (categories of perfect complexes in a non smooth case) of suitably twisted coherent sheaves on the base.
In this paper, we generalize a mathematical definition of Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds introduced by Maulik and the author, using an analogue of BPS sheaves introduced by Davison-Meinhardt on the coarse moduli spaces of one dimensional twisted semistable sheaves with arbitrary holomorphic Euler characteristics. We show that our generalized GV invariants are independent of twisted stability conditions, and conjecture that they are also independent of holomorphic Euler characteristics, so that they define the same GV invariants. As an application, we will show the flop tr…
