Due to a theorem by Orlov every exact fully faithful functor between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is of Fourier-Mukai type. We extend this result to the case of bounded derived categories of twisted coherent sheaves and at the same time we weaken the hypotheses on the functor. As an application we get a complete description of the exact functors between the abelian categories of twisted coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties.
This paper surveys some recent results about Fourier--Mukai functors. In particular, given an exact functor between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on two smooth projective varieties, we deal with the question whether this functor is of Fourier--Mukai type. Several related questions are answered and many open problems are stated.
We give some examples of isomorphisms of moduli of sheaves induced by Fourier-Mukai functor. As applications, we give another proof on deformation type of some moduli spaces of sheaves on abelian and K3 surfaces.
We propose some variants of Lefschetz fixed point theorem for Fourier-Mukai functors on a smooth projective algebraic variety. Independently we also suggest a similar theorem for endo-functors on the category of perfect modules over a smooth and proper DG algebra.
The aim of this mainly expository note is to point out that, given an Fourier-Mukai functor, the condition making it fully faithful is an instance of \emph{generic vanishing}. We test this point of view on some fairly classical examples, including the strong simplicity criterion of Bondal and Orlov, the standard flip and the Mukai flop.
Orlov's famous representability theorem asserts that any fully faithful exact functor between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is a Fourier-Mukai functor. In this paper we show that this result is false without the full faithfulness hypothesis.
We show that the stability conditions on the Kuznetsov component of a Gushel-Mukai threefold, constructed by Bayer, Lahoz, Macrì and Stellari, are preserved by the Serre functor, up to the action of the universal cover of $\text{GL}^+_2(\mathbb{R})$. As application, we construct stability conditions on the Kuznetsov component of special Gushel-Mukai fourfolds.
We give a counting formula for the twisted Fourier-Mukai partners of a projective K3 surface. As an application, we describe all twisted Fourier-Mukai partners of a projective K3 surface of Picard number 1.
We prove that exact functors between the categories of perfect complexes supported on projective schemes are of Fourier--Mukai type if the functor satisfies a condition weaker than being fully faithful. We also get generalizations of the results in the literature in the case without support conditions. Some applications are discussed and, along the way, we prove that the category of perfect supported complexes has a strongly unique enhancement.
Orlov's famous representability theorem asserts that any fully faithful functor between the derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is a Fourier-Mukai functor. This result has been extended by Lunts and Orlov to include functors from perfect complexes to quasi-coherent complexes. In this paper we show that the latter extension is false without the full faithfulness hypothesis. Our results are based on the properties of scalar extensions of derived categories, whose investigation was started by Pawel Sosna and the first author.
In this article, we prove that a tame twisted K3 surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic has only finitely many tame twisted Fourier-Mukai partners and we give a counting formula in case we have an ordinary tame untwisted K3 surface. We also show that every tame twisted Fourier Mukai partner of a K3 surface of finite height is a moduli space of twisted sheaves over it.
We show that every exact fully faithful functor from the category of perfect complexes on the spectrum of dual numbers to the bounded derived category of a noetherian separated scheme is of Fourier-Mukai type. The kernel turns out to be an object of the bounded derived category of coherent complexes on the product of the two schemes. We also study the space of stability conditions on the derived category of the spectrum of dual numbers.
Bridgeland and Maciocia showed that a complex Enriques surface X has no Fourier-Mukai partners apart from itself: that is, if D^b(X) = D^b(Y) then X = Y. We extend this to twisted Fourier-Mukai partners: if alpha is the non-trivial element of Br(X) = Z/2 and D^b(X,alpha) = D^b(Y,beta), then X = Y and beta is non-trivial. Our main tools are twisted topological K-theory and twisted Mukai lattices.
We prove that the kernels of Fourier-Mukai functors are not unique in general. On the other hand we show that the cohomology sheaves of those kernels are unique. We also discuss several properties of the functor sending an object in the derived category of the product of two smooth projective schemes to the corresponding Fourier-Mukai functor.
We apply the methods of C{ă}ld{ă}raru to construct a twisted Fourier-Mukai transform between a pair of holomorphic symplectic four-folds. More precisely, we obtain an equivalence between the derived category of coherent sheaves on a certain four-fold and the derived category of twisted sheaves on its `mirror' partner. As corollaries, we show that the two spaces are connected by a one-parameter family of deformations through Lagrangian fibrations, and we extend the original Fourier-Mukai transform to degenerations of abelian surfaces.
In this paper, we consider the preservation of stability by using the notion of Twisted stability. As applications, (1) we show that moduli spaces of vector bundles on K3 and abelian surfaces are irreducible, (2) we compute Hodge polynomials of some moduli spaces of vector bundles on Enriques surfaces and on elliptic surfaces with a section.
In this paper we prove that any smooth projective variety of dimension $\ge 3$ equipped with a tilting bundle can serve as the source variety of a non-Fourier-Mukai functor between smooth projective schemes.
A theorem by Orlov states that any equivalence between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves of two smooth projective varieties, X and Y, is isomorphic to a Fourier-Mukai transform with kernel in the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of the product XxY. In the case of an exact functor which is not necessarily fully faithful, we compute some sheaves that play the role of the cohomology sheaves of the kernel, and that are isomorphic to the latter whenever an isomorphism to a Fourier-Mukai transform exists. We then exhibit a class of functors that are not full or faithful …
We study the derived categories of twisted supersingular K3 surfaces. We prove a derived crystalline Torelli theorem for twisted supersingular K3 surfaces, characterizing Fourier-Mukai equivalences in terms of isomorphisms between their associated K3 crystals. This is a positive characteristic analog of the Hodge-theoretic derived Torelli theorem of Orlov, and its extension to twisted K3 surfaces by Huybrechts and Stellari. We give applications to various questions concerning Fourier-Mukai partners, extending results of Căldăraru and Huybrechts and Stellari. We also give an exact formula for t…
We give a condition for an exact functor between triangulated categories to be an equivalence. Applications to Fourier-Mukai transforms are discussed. In particular, we obtain a large number of such transforms for K3 surfaces.
Let C be small category and A an arbitrary category. Consider the category C(A) whose objects are functors from C to A, and whose morphisms are natural transformations. Given a functor F : A --> B one obtains an induced functor F_C : C(A) --> C(B) . If A and B are abelian categories, we have that C(A) and C(B) are also abelian, and one has two functors R(F_C) : D(C(A)) --> D(C(B)) and (RF)_ C : C(D(A)) --> C(D (B)). The goals of this paper are: 1) to find a relationship between D (C(A)) and C(D(A)); 2) to relate the functors R(F_C) and (RF)_C. As an application, we prove a version of Mukai's T…
We address the uniqueness problem of dg-lifts of exact functors between triangulated categories, and its relationship with the uniqueness problem of Fourier-Mukai kernels. We prove a positive result under a vanishing hypothesis on the functors, employing A_infty-categorical techniques.
We study the Fourier-Mukai functor D(Y) -> D(X) induced by the universal family on a fine moduli space Y for simple semihomogeneous vector bundles on an abelian variety X. The main result is that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a very negative line bundle on Y is ample if and only if the bundles parametrized by Y are nef.
We prove that a twisted Enriques (respectively, untwisted bielliptic) surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic at least 3 (respectively, at least 5) has no non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partners.
In this paper, we study holomorphic rank-2 vector bundles on non-K\" ahler elliptic surfaces. Our main tool for analysing these bundles is of course the spectral cover. However, given the non-Kähler condition, the elliptic surfaces we are considering do not have sections and gerbes naturally arise in this context. The spectral construction presented in this paper is a modification of the Fourier-Mukai transform for elliptic fibrations without a section. After examining some of the properties of this Fourier-Mukai transform, we give a complete classification of vector bundles on these surfaces.
Given a Fourier-Mukai functor $Φ$ in the general setting of singular schemes, under various hypotheses we provide both left and a right adjoints to $Φ$, and also give explicit formulas for them. These formulas are simple and natural, and recover the usual formulas when the Fourier-Mukai kernel is a perfect complex. This extends previous work of Anno and Logvinenko, and Hernandez Ruiperez, Lopez Martin and Sancho de Salas, and has applications to the twist autoequivalences of Donovan and Wemyss.
We study relative Fourier-Mukai transforms on genus one fibrations with section, allowing explicitly the total space of the fibration to be singular and non-projective. Grothendieck duality is used to prove a skew-commutativity relation between this equivalence of categories and certain duality functors. We use our results to explicitly construct examples of semi-stable sheaves on degenerating families of elliptic curves.
In 1996, Rothstein and Laumon simultaneously constructed a Fourier-Mukai transform for D-modules over a locally noetherian base of characteristic 0. This functor induces an equivalence of categories between quasi-coherent sheaves of D-modules over an abelian variety A and quasicoherent sheaves of O-modules over its universal vectorial extension A. In this article, we define a Fourier-Mukai transform for D-modules on an abelian formal scheme A/S = Spf (V), where V is a discrete valuation ring, and we discuss the extension of the classical results of Fourier-Mukai transform to this arithmetic ca…
We discuss the following problem: how can an arbitrary Fourier-Mukai transform $ϕ: \mathrm{D}^{\mathrm{b}}( \mathbb{P}^a ) \rightarrow \mathrm{D}^{\mathrm{b}}( \mathbb{P}^b )$ between the bounded derived categories of two projective spaces of dimensions $a$ and $b$ be expressed in explicit terms as an exact functor between the homotopy categories $\mathrm{K}^{\mathrm{b}}( \mathbb{B}^a ) \rightarrow \mathrm{K}^{\mathrm{b}}( \mathbb{B}^b )$ generated by the full strong exceptional sequences of the line bundles $\mathbb{B}^a = \{\mathcal{O}(-a), \dots, \mathcal{O}\}$ and $\mathbb{B}^b = \{\mathca…
We use A_{infinity}-formalism to study variation of cohomology spaces under formal deformations of coherent sheaves on projective varieties. As an application we describe formal neighborhoods of twisted Brill-Noether loci at some points. Another application is a computation of the Fourier-Mukai transform of some natural line bundles on symmetric powers of a curve.
We study K-equivalent birational maps which are resolved by a single blowup. Examples of such maps include standard flops and twisted Mukai flops. We give a criterion for such maps to be a standard flop or a twisted Mukai flop. As an application, we classify all such birational maps up to dimension 5.
We introduce a linearised form of the square root of the Todd class inside the Verbitsky component of a hyper-Kähler manifold using the extended Mukai lattice. This enables us to define a Mukai vector for certain objects in the derived category taking values inside the extended Mukai lattice which is functorial for derived equivalences. As applications, we obtain a structure theorem for derived equivalences between hyper-Kähler manifolds as well as an integral lattice associated to the derived category of hyper-Kähler manifolds deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of a K3 surface mimic…
We exhibit explicit examples of very general special cubic fourfolds with discriminant $d$ admitting an associated (twisted) K3 surface, which have non-isomorphic Fourier-Mukai partners. In particular, in the untwisted setting, we show that the number of Fourier-Mukai partners for a very general special cubic fourfold with discriminant $d$ and having an associated K3 surface, is equal to the number $m$ of Fourier-Mukai partners of its associated K3 surface, if $d \equiv 2 (\text{mod}\,6)$; else, if $d \equiv 0 (\text{mod}\,6)$, the cubic fourfold has $\lceil m/2 \rceil$ Fourier-Mukai partners.
Given a vector bundle $E$ on a smooth projective curve or surface $X$ carrying the structure of a $V$-twisted Hitchin pair for some vector bundle $V$, we observe that the associated tautological bundle $E^{[n]}$ on the punctual Hilbert scheme of points $X^{[n]}$ has an induced structure of a $((V^\vee)^{[n]})^\vee$-twisted Hitchin pair, where $(V^\vee)^{[n]}$ is a vector bundle on $X^{[n]}$ constructed using the dual $V^\vee$ of $V$. In particular, a Higgs bundle on $X$ induces a logarithmic Higgs bundle on the Hilbert scheme $X^{[n]}$. We then show that the known results on stability of tauto…
We extend to singular schemes with Gorenstein singularities or fibered in schemes of that kind Bondal and Orlov's criterion for an integral functor to be fully faithful. We also contemplate a criterion for equivalence. We offer a proof that is new even if we restrict to the smooth case. In addition, we prove that for locally projective Gorenstein morphisms, a relative integral functor is fully faithful if and only if its restriction to each fibre also is it. These results imply the invertibility of the usual relative Fourier-Mukai transform for an elliptic fibration as a direct corollary.
We study twisted ideal sheaves of small length on an irreducible principally polarized abelian surface (T,l). Using Fourier-Mukai techniques we associate certain jumping schemes to such sheaves and completely classify such loci. We give examples of applications to the enumerative geometry of T and show that no smooth genus 5 curve on such a surface can contain a g^1_3. We also describe explicitly the singular divisors in the linear system |2l|.
We describe the birational correspondences, induced by the Fourier-Mukai functor, between moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on elliptic surfaces with sections, using the notion of $P$-stability in the derived category. We give explicit conditions to determine whether these correspondences are isomorphisms. This is indeed not true in general and we describe the cases where the birational maps are Mukai flops. Moreover, this construction provides examples of new compactifications of the moduli spaces of vector bundles via sheaves with torsion and via complexes. We finally get for any fixed dim…
We introduce and study kernel algebras, i.e., algebras in the category of sheaves on a square of a scheme, where the latter category is equipped with a monoidal structure via a natural convolution operation. We show that many interesting categories, such as D-modules, equivariant sheaves and their twisted versions, arise as categories of modules over kernel algebras. We develop the techniques of constructing derived equivalences between these module categories. As one application we generalize the results of math.AG/9901009 concerning modules over algebras of twisted differential operators on …
On a Weierstraß elliptic surface $X$, we define a `limit' of Bridgeland stability conditions, denoted $Z^l$-stability, by varying the polarisation in the definition of Bridgeland stability along a curve in the ample cone of $X$. We show that a slope stable torsion-free sheaf of positive (twisted) degree or a slope stable locally free sheaf is taken by a Fourier-Mukai transform on $D^b(X)$ to a $Z^l$-stable object, while a $Z^l$-semistable object of nonzero fiber degree can be modified so that its inverse Fourier-Mukai transform is a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf.
In this note, we shall prove that two smooth projective varieties of dim 2n connected by a Mukai flop have equivalent bounded derived categories. More precisely, let $ϕ: X - - \to X^+$ be a Mukai flop with centers $Y \subset X$ and $Y^+ \subset X^+$. In our case, the natural fuctor $Φ: D(X) \to D(X^+)$ defined by the graph of $ϕ$ is not fully faithful. Instead, let $X \to {\bar X}$ and $X^+ \to {\bar X}$ be the birational contraction maps of the centers, and put ${\hat X} := X \times_{{\bar X} X^+$. Then ${\hat X}$ is a normal crossing variety with two irreducible components. This ${\hat X}$ d…
On a Weierstraß elliptic surface $X$, we define a `limit' of Bridgeland stability conditions, denoted as $Z^l$-stability, by moving the polarisation towards the fiber direction in the ample cone while keeping the volume of the polarisation fixed. We describe conditions under which a slope stable torsion-free sheaf is taken by a Fourier-Mukai transform to a $Z^l$-stable object, and describe a modification upon which a $Z^l$-semistable object is taken by the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform to a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf. We also study wall-crossing for Bridgeland stability, and show th…
Let X be an abelian scheme over a scheme B. The Fourier--Mukai transform gives an equivalence between the derived category of X and the derived category of the dual abelian scheme. We partially extend this to certain schemes X over B (which we call degenerate abelian schemes) whose generic fiber is an abelian variety, while special fibers are singular. Our main result provides a fully faithful functor from a twist of the derived category of Pic$^τ$(X/B) to the derived category of X. Here Pic$^τ$(X/B) is the algebraic space classifying fiberwise numerically trivial line bundles. Next, we show t…
Let $X$ be a complex torus of dimension $g$ and $\hat{X}$ be the dual torus. For any $g(g-1)/2$-tuple $λ$ of complex numbers of absolute value $1$, we define a non-commutative complex torus $X_λ$ as a sheaf of algebras on a real torus of dimension $g$. We prove that if all components of $λ$ are roots of unity, then the category of coherent sheaves on $X_λ$ is abelian and derived-equivalent to the category of coherent sheaves on $\hat{X}$ twisted by an element of the Brauer group of $\hat{X}$ determined by $λ$.
We study rank two locally-free Fourier-Mukai transforms on K3 surfaces and show that they come in two distinct types according to whether the determinant of a suitable twist of the kernel is positive or not. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition on the existence of Fourier-Mukai transforms of rank 2 between the derived categories of K3 surfaces X and Y with negative twisted determinant is that Y is isomorphic to X and there must exist a line bundle with no cohomology. We use these results to prove that all reflexive K3 surfaces (including the degenerate ones) admit Fourier-Mukai tr…
In this paper, we consider moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces. Our main assumption is the primitivity of the associated Mukai vector. We construct many isomorphisms of muduli spaces induced by Fourier-Mukai functor. As an application, we show that deformation type of these spaces are determined by their dimension. We next show that the fiber of the albanese map is irreducible symplectic manifolds In particular, we describe the period by using Mukai lattice. We also discuss deformation type of moduli spaces of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces.
We construct the moduli of twisted sheaves on a projective variety. Then we generalize known results on the moduli space of usual sheaves on a K3 surface to the twisted case. Thus we consider the non-emptyness, the deformation type and the Fourier-Mukai transformation. As an application of our results, Daniel Huybrechts and Paolo Stellari prove Caldararu's conjecture.
For $X$ a smooth quasi-projective variety and $X^{[n]}$ its associated Hilbert scheme of $n$ points, we study two canonical Fourier--Mukai transforms $D(X)\to D(X^{[n]})$, the one along the structure sheaf and the one along the ideal sheaf of the universal family. For $\dim X\ge 2$, we prove that both functors admit a left-inverse. This means in particular that both functors are faithful and injective on isomorphism classes of objects. Using another method, we also show in the case of an elliptic curve that the Fourier--Mukai transform along the structure sheaf of the universal family is faith…
We give a construction of NC-smooth thickenings (a notion defined by Kapranov in math/9802041) of a smooth variety equipped with a torsion free connection. We show that a twisted version of this construction realizes all NC-smooth thickenings as 0th cohomology of a differential graded sheaf of algebras, similarly to Fedosov's construction in \cite{Fed}. We use this dg resolution to construct and study sheaves on NC-smooth thickenings. In particular, we construct an NC version of the Fourier-Mukai transform from coherent sheaves on a (commutative) curve to perfect complexes on the canonical NC-…
We prove that the first order deformations of two smooth projective K3 surfaces are derived equivalent under a Fourier--Mukai transform if and only if there exists a special isometry of the total cohomology groups of the surfaces which preserves the Mukai pairing, an infinitesimal weight-2 decomposition and the orientation of a positive 4-dimensional space. This generalizes the derived version of the Torelli Theorem. Along the way we show the compatibility of the actions on Hochschild homology and singular cohomology of any Fourier--Mukai functor.
We study the Hodge theory of twisted derived categories and its relation to the period-index problem. Our main contribution is the development of a theory of twisted Mukai structures for topologically trivial Brauer classes on arbitrary smooth proper varieties and in families. As applications, we construct Hodge classes whose algebraicity would imply period-index bounds; construct new counterexamples to the integral Hodge conjecture on Severi-Brauer varieties; and prove the integral Hodge conjecture for derived categories of Deligne-Mumford surfaces.
We extend Orlov's result that certain functors between derived categories of smooth projective varieties are Fourier--Mukai transforms to the case when those varieties are smooth and proper.
Using lattice theory, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between the set of Fourier-Mukai partners of a projective $K3$ surface and the set of 0-dimensional standard cusps of its Kahler moduli. We also study the relation between twisted Fourier-Mukai partners and general 0-dimensional cusps, and the relation between Fourier-Mukai partners with elliptic fibrations and certain 1-dimensional cusps.
We study the generalized hypergeometric system introduced by Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky and its relationship with the toric Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks recently studied by Borisov, Chen and Smith. We construct series solutions with values in a combinatorial version of the Chen-Ruan (orbifold) cohomology and in the $K$-theory of the associated DM stacks. In the spirit of the homological mirror symmetry conjecture of Kontsevich, we show that the $K$-theory action of the Fourier-Mukai functors associated to basic toric birational maps of DM stacks are mirrored by analytic continuation trans…
