We prove that the first order deformations of two smooth projective K3 surfaces are derived equivalent under a Fourier--Mukai transform if and only if there exists a special isometry of the total cohomology groups of the surfaces which preserves the Mukai pairing, an infinitesimal weight-2 decomposition and the orientation of a positive 4-dimensional space. This generalizes the derived version of the Torelli Theorem. Along the way we show the compatibility of the actions on Hochschild homology and singular cohomology of any Fourier--Mukai functor.
We give an effective infinitesimal Torelli theorem for cyclic covers of G/P, where G is a simple algebraic group and P is a maximal parabolic subgroup.
Given a compact Kähler manifold, the Infinitesimal Torelli problem asks whether the differential of the period map of a Kuranishi family is injective. Unlike the classical Torelli theorem for curves, there is a negative answer for example for hyperelliptic curves of genus greater than $2$. Nevertheless the Infinitesimal Torelli Theorem holds for many other classes of manifolds. We will prove it for smooth hypersurfaces in simple abelian varieties with sufficiently high self-intersection giving an effective bound on a result by Green in this particular case.
Let $g \geq 2$ and let the Torelli map denote the map sending a genus $g$ curve to its principally polarized Jacobian. We verify the well known fact that the map induced on tangent spaces by the Torelli map is dual to the multiplication map $\mathrm{Sym}^2 H^0(C, ω_C) \rightarrow H^0(C, ω_C^{\otimes 2})$.
We generalize the classical approach of describing the infinitesimal Torelli map in terms of multiplication in a Jacobi ring to the case of quasi-smooth complete intersections in weighted projective space. As an application, we prove the infinitesimal Torelli theorem for hyperelliptic Fano threefolds of Picard rank 1, index 1, degree 4 and study the action of the automorphism group on cohomology. The results of this paper are used to prove Lang-Vojta's conjecture for the moduli of such Fano threefolds in a follow-up paper.
We prove the infinitesimal Torelli theorem for general minimal complex surfaces X's with the first Chern number 3, the geometric genus 1, and the irregularity 0 which have non-trivial 3-torsion divisors. We also show that the coarse moduli space for surfaces with the invariants as above is a 14-dimensional unirational variety.
We solve the infinitesimal Torelli problem for $3$-dimensional quasi-smooth ${\mathbb{Q}}$-Fano hypersurfaces with at worst terminal singularities. We also find infinite chains of double coverings of increasing dimension which alternatively distribute themselves in examples and counterexamples for the infinitesimal Torelli claim and which share the analogue, and in some cases the same, Hodge-diagram properties as the length $3$ Gushel-Mukai chain of prime smooth Fanos of coindex $3$ and degree $10$.
The article proves the Infinitesimal Torelli theorem for surfaces subject to the following conditions: 1) the canonical bundle of a surface is ample and generated by its global sections, 2)the geometric genus $p_g \geq 4$, 3) the irregularity $q=0$ . The main novelty is a realization of the Kodaira-Spencer classes lying in the kernel of the cohomology cup-product controlling the derivative of the period map of weight 2 in the category of the coherent sheaves of a surface.
We prove an equivalence between the infinitesimal Torelli theorem for top forms on a hypersurface contained inside a Grassmannian $\mathbb G$ and the theory of adjoint volume forms presented in L. Rizzi, F. Zucconi, "Generalized adjoint forms on algebraic varieties", Ann. Mat. Pura e Applicata, in press. More precisely, via this theory and a suitable generalization of Macaulay's theorem we show that the differential of the period map vanishes on an infinitesimal deformation if and only if certain explicitly given twisted volume forms go in the generalized Jacobi ideal of $X$ via the cup produc…
Using the notion of generalized divisors introduced by Hartshorne, we adapt the theory of adjoint forms to the case of Gorenstein curves. We show an infinitesimal Torelli-type theorem for vector bundles on Gorenstein curves. We also construct explicit counterexamples to the infinitesimal Torelli claim in the case of a reduced reducible Gorenstein curve.
Let $X$ be a smooth compact complex surface subject to the following conditions: (i) the canonical line bundle $\mathcal{O}_X(K_X) $ is very ample, (ii) the irregularity $q(X): = h^1(\mathcal{O}_X) =0$, (iii) $X$ contains no rational normal curves of degree $\leq (p_g-1)$, (iv) the multiplication map $m_2: Sym^2(H^0(\mathcal{O}_X(K_X))) \longrightarrow H^0 (\mathcal{O}_X (2K_X))$ is surjective. It is shown that the Infinitesimal Torelli holds for such $X$. Our proof is based on the study of the cup-product $$ H^1 (Θ_X) \longrightarrow (\mathcal{O}_X(K_X))^{\ast} \otimes H^1 (Ω_X) $$ where $Θ_X…
This is a significant revision of the early version of this paper which was posted last December. The speculative section has been removed in light of some recent results of Morita and Kawazumi. Numerous typos have been fixed. The companion paper "The Hodge de Rham Theory of Relative Malcev Completion" has just been posted.
We study the equivalence between infinitesimal Torelli theorem for smooth hypersurfaces in rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number one and the theory of generalized Massey products. This equivalence shows that the differential of the period map vanishes on an infinitesimal deformation if and only if certain twisted differential forms are elements of the Jacobian ideal of the hypersurface. We also prove an infinitesimal Torelli theorem result for smooth hypersurfaces in log parallelizable varieties.
We show that the Hilbert scheme which parameterises bitangent lines to a general quartic surface is a counterexample to the infinitesimal Torelli claim and is a smooth regular surface with no rational curves and very ample canonical divisor.
Algebraic surfaces of general type with $q=0$, $p_g=2$ and $K^2=1$ were described by Enriques and then studied in more detail by Horikawa. In this paper we consider a $16$-dimensional family of special Horikawa surfaces which are certain bidouble covers of $\mathbb{P}^2$. The construction is motivated by that of special Kunev surfaces which are counterexamples for infinitesimal Torelli and generic global Torelli problem. The main result of the paper is a generic global Torelli theorem for special Horikawa surfaces. To prove the theorem, we relate the periods of special Horikawa surfaces to the…

We prove that two general Enriques surfaces defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from $2$ are isomorphic if their Kuznetsov components are equivalent. We apply the same techniques to give a new simple proof of a conjecture by Ingalls and Kuznetsov relating the derived categories of the blow-up of general Artin\textendash Mumford quartic double solids and of the associated Enriques surfaces. This paper originated from one of the problem sections at the workshop \emph{Semiorthogonal decompositions, stability conditions and sheaves of categories}, Université de T…
We show that infinitesimal Torelli for $n$-forms holds for abelian covers of algebraic varieties of dimension $n\ge 2$, under some explicit ampleness assumptions on the building data of the cover. Moreover, we prove a variational Torelli result for some families of abelian covers.
A mapping class group of an oriented manifold is a quotient of its diffeomorphism group by the isotopies. In the published version of "Mapping class group and a global Torelli theorem for hyperkahler manifolds" I made an error based on a wrong quotation of Dennis Sullivan's famous paper "Infinitesimal computations in topology". I claimed that the natural homomorphism from the mapping class group to the group of automorphims of cohomology of a simply connected Kahler manifold has finite kernel. In a recent preprint arXiv:1907.05693, Matthias Kreck and Yang Su produced counterexamples to this st…
We survey some recent results concerning the so called Categorical Torelli problem. This is to say how one can reconstruct a smooth projective variety up to isomorphism, by using the homological properties of special admissible subcategories of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of such a variety. The focus is on Enriques surfaces, prime Fano threefolds and cubic fourfolds.
We study the Fourier--Mukai numbers of rational elliptic surfaces. As its application, we give an example of a pair of minimal 3-folds with Kodaira dimensions 1, $h^1(\mc O)=h^2(\mc O)=0$ such that they are mutually derived equivalent, deformation equivalent, but not birationally equivalent. It also supplies a counterexample of the birational Torelli problem.
We prove that two Enriques surfaces defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from $2$ are isomorphic if their Kuznetsov components are equivalent. This improves and completes our previous result joint with Nuer where the same statement is proved for generic Enriques surfaces.
The Jacobian ring J(X) of a smooth hypersurface determines its isomorphism type. This has been used by Donagi and others to prove the generic global Torelli theorem for hypersurfaces in many cases. In Voisin's original proof of the global Torelli theorem for smooth cubic fourfolds the Jacobian ring does not intervene. In this paper we present a proof of the global Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds that relies on the Jacobian ring and the (derived) global Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces. It emphasizes, once again, the relation between K3 surfaces and smooth cubic fourfolds. More generally, fo…
Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ be a smooth Fano hypersurface of dimension $n$ and degree $d$. The derived category of coherent sheaves on $X$ contains an interesting subcategory called the Kuznetsov component $\mathcal{A}_X$. We show that this subcategory, together with a certain autoequivalence called the rotation functor, determines $X$ uniquely if $d > 3$ or if $d = 3$ and $n > 3$. This generalizes a result by D. Huybrechts and J. Rennemo, who proved the same statement under the additional assumption that $d$ divides $n+2$.
In an earlier paper the notion of a filtered derived equivalence was introduced, and it was shown that if two K3 surfaces admit such an equivalence then they are isomorphic. In this paper we study more refined aspects of filtered derived equivalences related to the action on the cohomological realizations of the Mukai motive. It is shown that if a filtered derived equivalence between K3 surfaces also preserves ample cones then one can find an isomorphism that induces the same map as the equivalence on the cohomological realizations.
We prove that the Chow motives of twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces are isomorphic, not only as Chow motives (due to Huybrechts), but also as Frobenius algebra objects. Combined with a recent result of Huybrechts, we conclude that two complex projective K3 surfaces are isogenous (i.e. their second rational cohomology groups are Hodge isometric) if and only if their Chow motives are isomorphic as Frobenius algebra objects; this can be regarded as a motivic Torelli-type theorem. We ask whether, more generally, twisted derived equivalent hyper-Kaehler varieties have isomorphic Chow motives a…
We prove a non abelian Torelli type result for smooth projective curves by working in the derived category of some associated polarized Quot schemes and defining Brill-Noether loci and Abel-Jacobi maps on them.
We study the derived categories of twisted supersingular K3 surfaces. We prove a derived crystalline Torelli theorem for twisted supersingular K3 surfaces, characterizing Fourier-Mukai equivalences in terms of isomorphisms between their associated K3 crystals. This is a positive characteristic analog of the Hodge-theoretic derived Torelli theorem of Orlov, and its extension to twisted K3 surfaces by Huybrechts and Stellari. We give applications to various questions concerning Fourier-Mukai partners, extending results of Căldăraru and Huybrechts and Stellari. We also give an exact formula for t…
We prove a full generalization of the Castelnuovo's free pencil trick. We show its analogies with the Adjoint Theorem; see L. Rizzi, F. Zucconi, Differential forms and quadrics of the canonical image, arXiv:1409.1826 and also Theorem 1.5.1 in G. P. Pirola, F. Zucconi, Variations of the Albanese morphisms, J. Algebraic Geom. 12 (2003), no. 3, 535-572. Moreover we find a new formulation of the Griffiths's infinitesimal Torelli Theorem for smooth projective hypersurfaces using meromorphic $1$-forms.
We give an interpretation of the Fano variety of lines on a cubic fourfold and of the hyperkahler eightfold, constructed by Lehn, Lehn, Sorger and van Straten from twisted cubic curves in a cubic fourfold non containing a plane, as moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects in the Kuznetsov component. As a consequence, we reprove the categorical version of Torelli Theorem for cubic fourfolds, we obtain the identification of the period point of LLSvS eightfold with that of the Fano variety, and we discuss derived Torelli Theorem for cubic fourfolds.
In this paper, we show that the infinitesimal Torelli theorem implies the existence of deformations of automorphisms. In the first part, we use Hodge theory and deformation theory to study the deformations of automorphisms of complex projective manifolds. In the second part, we use crystalline cohomology to explore the p-adic analogues of the first part, which generalizes a result of Berthelot and Ogus. The study of the deformations of automorphisms also provides criterions characterizing when the action of the automorphism group of a variety on its cohomology is faithful.
We characterize the relative prismatic cohomology of Bhatt and Scholze by a universal property by endowing it with the additional structure of a ``derived $δ$-ring". This involves introducing an analogue of prismatic envelopes in the setting of filtered derived commutative rings and applying this construction to the Hodge filtration on infinitesimal cohomology. In particular, we recover relative prismatic cohomology from infinitesimal cohomology via a purely algebraic process.
We prove a categorical version of the Torelli theorem for cubic threefolds. More precisely, we show that the non-trivial part of a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived category of a cubic threefold characterizes its isomorphism class.
We establish a local model for the moduli space of holomorphic symplectic structures with logarithmic poles, near the locus of structures whose polar divisor is normal crossings. In contrast to the case without poles, the moduli space is singular: when the cohomology class of a symplectic structure satisfies certain linear equations with integer coefficients, its polar divisor can be partially smoothed, yielding adjacent irreducible components of the moduli space that correspond to possibly non-normal crossings structures. These components are indexed by combinatorial data we call smoothing di…
We study stability conditions induced by functors between triangulated categories. Given a finite group acting on a smooth projective variety we prove that the subset of invariant stability conditions embeds as a closed submanifold into the stability manifold of the equivariant derived category. As an application we examine stability conditions on Kummer and Enriques surfaces and we improve the derived version of the Torelli Theorem for the latter surfaces already present in the litterature. We also study the relationship between stability conditions on projective spaces and those on their can…
Every Fourier--Mukai equivalence between the derived categories of two K3 surfaces induces a Hodge isometry of their cohomologies viewed as Hodge structures of weight two endowed with the Mukai pairing. We prove that this Hodge isometry preserves the natural orientation of the four positive directions. This leads to a complete description of the action of the group of all autoequivalences on cohomology very much like the classical Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces determining all Hodge isometries that are induced by automorphisms.
If $X$ is a smooth scheme of characteristic zero or a complex analytic manifold, and $S$ is a locally split infinitesimal thickening of $X$, we compute explicitly the derived self-intersection of $X$ in $S$.
