Let $X$ be a scheme, proper over a commutative noetherian ring $A$. We introduce the concept of an ample filter of invertible sheaves on $X$ and generalize the most important equivalent criteria for ampleness of an invertible sheaf. We also prove the Theorem of the Base for $X$ and generalize Serre's Vanishing Theorem. We then generalize results for twisted homogeneous coordinate rings which were previously known only when $X$ was projective over an algebraically closed field. Specifically, we show that the concepts of left and right $σ$-ampleness are equivalent and that the associated twisted homogeneous coordinate ring must be noetherian.
Using the fact that $Π$-invertible sheaves can be interpreted as locally free sheaves of modules for the super skew field $\mathbb{D}$, we give a new construction of the $Π$-projective superspace $\mathbb{P}^n_{Π, B}$ over affine $k$ superschemes $B$, $k$ an algebraically closed field. We characterize morphisms into $\mathbb{P}^n_{Π, B}$ and give a new interpretation of the composition of $Π$-invertible sheaves in terms of the algebra of $\mathbb{D}$.
This paper generalises Mori's famous theorem about "Projective manifolds with ample tangent bundles" to normal projective varieties in the following way: A normal projective variety over $\mathbb{C}$ with ample tangent sheaf is isomorphic to the complex projective space.
In this article we survey recent results of joint work with Lutz Hille on exceptional sequences of invertible sheaves on rational surfaces and give examples.
Fix a Chern character of a stable sheaf on the plane. Assume either the rank is at most 6 or the rank and first Chern class are coprime and the discriminant is sufficiently large. We use recent results of Bayer and Macri on Bridgeland stability to compute the ample cone of the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves with the given Chern character. We recover earlier results, such as those by Stromme and Yoshioka, as special cases.
In this paper, we study deformations of nonsingular Poisson varieties, deformations of Poisson invertible sheaves and simultaneous deformations of nonsingular Poisson varieties and Poisson invertible sheaves, which extend flat deformation theory of nonsingular varieties and invertible sheaves. In an appendix, we study deformations of Poisson vector bundles. We identify first-order deformations and obstructions.
In this article, we prove an extension property of semipositively metrized ample invertible sheaves on a projective scheme over a complete non-archimedean valued field. As an application, we establish a Nakai-Moishezon type criterion for adelically normed graded linear series.
In this article we consider exceptional sequences of invertible sheaves on smooth complete rational surfaces. We show that to every such sequence one can associate a smooth complete toric surface in a canonical way. We use this structural result to prove various theorems on exceptional and strongly exceptional sequences of invertible sheaves on rational surfaces. We construct full strongly exceptional sequences for a large class of rational surfaces. For the case of toric surfaces we give a complete classification of full strongly exceptional sequences of invertible sheaves.
Let (L, h) be a pair of a semiample invertible sheaf and a semipositive continuous hermitian metric on a proper algebraic variety. In this paper, we prove that (L, h) is semiample metrized, which is a generalization of the question due to S. Zhang.
We show that the tangent bundle of a projective manifold with nef anticanonical class is generically nef. That is, its restriction to a curve cut out by general sufficiently ample divisors is a nef vector bundle. This confirms a conjecture of Peternell. As a consequence, the second Chern class of such a manifold has non-negative intersections with ample divisors. We also investigate under which conditions these positivities are strict, and answer a question of Yau.
v2: We improved a little bit according to the referee's wishes. v1: On $X$ projective smooth over a field $k$, Pink and Roessler conjecture that the dimension of the Hodge cohomology of an invertible $n$-torsion sheaf $L$ is the same as the one of its $a$-th power $L^a$ if $a$ is prime to $n$, under the assumptions that $X$ lifts to $W_2(k)$ and $dim X\le p$, if $k$ has characteristic $p>0$. They show this if $k$ has characteristic 0 and if $n$ is prime to $p$ in characteristic $p>0$. We show the conjecture in characteristic $p>0$ if $n=p$ assuming in addition that $X$ is ordinary (in the sens…
For a noetherian scheme that has an ample family of invertible sheaves, we prove that direct products in the category of quasi-coherent sheaves are not exact unless the scheme is affine. This result can especially be applied to all quasi-projective schemes over commutative noetherian rings. The main tools of the proof are the Gabriel-Popescu embedding and Roos' characterization of Grothendieck categories satisfying Ab6 and Ab4*.
We study the supergeometry of complex projective superspaces $\mathbb{P}^{n|m}$. First, we provide formulas for the cohomology of invertible sheaves of the form $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{n|m}} (\ell)$, that are pull-back of ordinary invertible sheaves on the reduced variety $\mathbb{P}^n$. Next, by studying the even Picard group $\mbox{Pic}_0 (\mathbb{P}^{n|m})$, classifying invertible sheaves of rank $1|0$, we show that the sheaves $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb {P}^{n|m}} (\ell)$ are not the only invertible sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^{n|m}$, but there are also new genuinely supersymmetric invertible shea…
The twisted homogeneous coordinate ring is one of the basic constructions of the noncommutative projective geometry of Artin, Van den Bergh, and others. Chan generalized this construction to the multi-homogeneous case, using a concept of right ampleness for a finite collection of invertible sheaves and automorphisms of a projective scheme. From this he derives that certain multi-homogeneous rings, such as tensor products of twisted homogeneous coordinate rings, are right noetherian. We show that right and left ampleness are equivalent and that there is a simple criterion for such ampleness. Th…
Let $H$ be an ample line bundle on a non-singular projective surface $X$, and $M(H)$ the coarse moduli scheme of rank-two $H$-semistable sheaves with fixed Chern classes on $X$. We show that if $H$ changes and passes through walls to get closer to $K_X$, then $M(H)$ undergoes natural flips with respect to canonical divisors. When $X$ is minimal and its Kodaira dimension is positive, this sequence of flips terminates in $M(H_X)$; $H_X$ is an ample line bundle lying so closely to $K_X$ that the canonical divisor of $M(H_X)$ is nef. Remark that so-called Thaddeus-type flips somewhat differ from f…
In this paper we consider ideal sheaves associated to the singular loci of a divisor in a linear system $|L|$ of an ample line bundle on a complex abelian variety. We prove an effective result on their (continuous) global generation, after suitable twists by powers of $L$. Moreover we show that similar results hold for subvarieties of a complex abelian variety.
A celebrated conjecture of Kobayashi and Lang says that the canonical line bundle $K_X$ of a Kobayashi hyperbolic compact complex manifold $X$ is ample. In this note we prove that $K_X$ is ample if $X$ is projective and satisfies a stronger condition of nondegenerate negative total $k$-jet curvature. We use positivity of direct image sheaves and decomposition of jets in order to produce pluridifferentials on $X$.
A semiring scheme generalizes a scheme in such a way that the underlying algebra is that of semirings. We generalize Čech cohomology theory and invertible sheaves to semiring schemes. In particular, when $X=\mathbb{P}^n_M$, a projective space over a totally ordered idempotent semifield $M$, we show that Čech cohomology theory is in agreement with the classical computation. Finally, we classify all invertible sheaves on $X=\mathbb{P}^n_M$ by computing the Picard group of $X$ explicitly.
We give a new interpretation of Kozsul cohomology, which is equivalent under the Bridgeland-King-Reid equivalence to Voisin's Hilbert scheme interpretation in dimensions 1 and 2, but is different in higher dimensions. As an application, we prove that the dimension $K_{p,q}(B,L)$ is a polynomial in $d$ for $L=dA+P$ with $A$ ample and $d$ large enough.
In this paper we show that the relative canonical sheaf of a relatively minimal fibration of curves over a curve is semi-ample ; in fact, its m-tensored product is base point free for any m > 1. We use Koszul cohomology with it to prove that the relative canonical ring of the fibration is generated in degree up to five.
Generalizing homogeneous spectra for rings graded by natural numbers, we introduce multihomogeneous spectra for rings graded by abelian groups. Such homogeneous spectra have the same completeness properties as their classical counterparts, but are possibly nonseparated. We relate them to ample families of invertible sheaves and simplicial toric varieties. As an application, we generalize Grothendieck's Algebraization Theorem and show that formal schemes with certain ample families are algebraizable.
Let $X$ be a projective scheme over a field. We show that the vanishing cohomology of any sequence of coherent sheaves is closely related to vanishing under pullbacks by the Frobenius morphism. We also compare various definitions of ample locally free sheaf and show that the vanishing given by the Frobenius morphism is, in a certain sense, the strongest possible. Our work can be viewed as various generalizations of the Serre Vanishing Theorem.
Let $S$ be a smooth projective variety and $Δ$ a simple normal crossing $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor with coefficients in $(0,1]$. For any ample $\mathbb{Q}$-line bundle $L$ over $S$, we denote by $\mathscr{E}(L)$ the extension sheaf of the orbifold tangent sheaf $T_S(-\log(Δ))$ by the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}_S$ with the extension class $c_1(L)$. We show the following two results: (i) If $-(K_S+Δ)$ is ample and $(S, Δ)$ is K-semistable, then for any $λ\in \mathbb{Q}_{>0}$, the extension sheaf $\mathscr{E}({λc_1(-(K_S+Δ))})$ is slope semistable with respect to $-(K_S+Δ)$; (ii) If $K_S+Δ\equiv 0$, …
Let $H$ and $H'$ be two ample line bundles over a smooth projective surface $X$, and $M(H)$ (resp. $M(H')$) the coarse moduli scheme of $H$-semistable (resp. $H'$-semistable) sheaves of fixed type $(r,c_1,c_2)$. We construct a sequence of blowing-ups which describes how $M(H)$ differs from $M(H')$ not only when $r=2$ but also when $r$ is arbitrary. Means we here utilize are elementary transforms and the notion of a sheaf with flag.
Let $X$ be a nonsingular projective surface over an algebraically closed field with characteristic zero, and $H_-$ and $H_+$ ample line bundles on $X$ separated by only one wall of type $(c_1,c_2)$. Suppose the moduli scheme $M(H_-)$ of rank-two $H_-$-stable sheaves with Chern classes $(c_1,c_2)$ is non-singular. We shall construct a desingularization of $M(H_+)$ by using $M(H_-)$. As an application, we consider whether singularities of $M(H_+)$ are terminal or not when $X$ is ruled or elliptic.
Let X be a normal projective variety, and let A be an ample Cartier divisor on X. We prove that the twisted cotangent sheaf $Ω_X \otimes A$ is generically nef with respect to the polarisation A unless X is a projective space. As an application we prove a Kobayashi-Ochiai theorem for foliations: if $F \subsetneq T_X$ is a foliation of rank r such that $det F \equiv i_F A$, then we have $i_F \leq r$.
Let S be a smooth projective surface, K be the canonical class of S and H be an ample divisor such that H.K<0 . In this paper we prove that for any rigid (Ext^1(F,F)=0) semistable sheaf F in the sense of Mumford--Takemoto stability w.r.t. H there exists an exceptional collection (E_1,...,E_n) of sheaves on S such that F can be constructed from {E_i} by a finite number of extensions.
Given a smooth projective variety over a perfect field of positive characteristic, we prove that the higher cohomologies vanish for the tensor product of the Witt canonical sheaf and the Teichmuller lift of an ample invertible sheaf. We also give a generalisation of this vanishing theorem to one of Kawamata-Viehweg type.
Let $X$ be a smooth quasi-projective algebraic surface and let $Δ_n$ the big diagonal in the product variety $X^n$. We study cohomological properties of the ideal sheaves $\mathcal{I}^k_{Δ_n}$ and their invariants $(\mathcal{I}^k_{Δ_n})^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ by the symmetric group, seen as ideal sheaves over the symmetric variety $S^nX$. In particular we obtain resolutions of the sheaves of invariants $(\mathcal{I}_{Δ_n})^{\mathfrak{S}_n}$ for $n = 3,4$ in terms of invariants of sheaves over $X^n$ whose cohomology is easy to calculate. Moreover, we relate, via the Bridgeland-King-Reid equivalence,…
Let (S,H) be a rational algebraic surface with an ample divisor. We compute generating functions for the Hodge numbers of the moduli spaces of H-stable rank 2 sheaves on S in terms of certain theta functions for indefinite lattices that were introduced in the paper alg-geom/9612020 written jointly with Don Zagier. If H lies in the closure of the ample cone and has self-intersection 0, it follows that the generating functions are Jacobi forms. In particular the generating functions for the Euler numbers have a similar transformation behaviour under SL(2,Z) as that predicted in Vafa and Witten: …
Let J be an abelian surface with a generic ample line bundle O(1). For n>0, the moduli space M(2, 0, 2n) of O(1)-semistable sheaves F of rank 2 with Chern classes c_1(F) = 0, c_2(F) = 2n is a singular projective variety, endowed with a holomorphic symplectic structure on the smooth locus. In this paper, we show that there does not exist a crepant resolution of M(2; 0; 2n) for n>1. This certainly implies that there is no symplectic desingularization of M(2, 0, 2n) for n>1.
The Jacobian $J$ of a complete, smooth, connected curve $X$ admits a canonical divisor $Θ$, called the Theta divisor. It is well-known that $Θ$ is ample and, in fact, $3Θ$ is very ample. For a general complete, integral curve $X$, D'Souza constructed a compactification $\bar J$ of the Jacobian $J$ by considering torsion-free, rank 1 sheaves on $X$. Soucaris and the author considered independently the analogous Theta divisor $Θ$ on $\bar J$, and showed that $Θ$ is ample. In this article, we show that $nΘ$ is very ample for $n$ greater or equal to a specified lower bound. If $X$ has at most ordi…
Let $H$ and $H'$ be two ample line bundles over a nonsingular projective surface $X$, and $M(H)$ (resp. $M(H')$) the coarse moduli scheme of $H$-semistable (resp. $H'$-semistable) sheaves of fixed type $(r=2,c_1,c_2)$. In a moduli-theoretic way that comes from elementary transforms, we connect $M(H)$ and $M(H')$ by a sequence of blowing-ups when walls separating $H$ and $H'$ are not necessarily good. As an application, we also consider the polarization change problem of Donaldson polynomials.
Let S be a Noetherian scheme and f:X -> S a proper morphism. By SGA 4 XIV, for any constructible sheaf F of Z/nZ-modules on X, the sheaves of Z/nZ-modules R^if_*F obtained by direct image (for the etale topology) are also constructible: there is a stratification of S on whose strata these sheaves are locally constant constructible. After previous work of N. Katz and G. Laumon, or L. Illusie, on the special case in which S is generically of characteristic zero or the sheaves F are constant (with invertible torsion on S), here we study the dependency of the stratification on F. We show that a na…
Let $X$ be a complex projective manifold. Fix two ample line bundles $H_0$ and $H_1$ on $X$. It is the aim of this note to study the variation of the moduli spaces of Gieseker semistable sheaves for polarizations lying in the cone spanned by $H_0$ and $H_1$. We attempt a new definition of walls which naturally describes the behaviour of Gieseker semistability. By means of an example, we establish the possibility of non-rational walls which is a substantially new phenomenon compared to the surface case. Using the approach of Ellingsrud and Goettsche via parabolic sheaves, we were able to show t…
Given two positive definite forms f, g in R[x_0,...,x_n], we prove that fg^N is a sum of squares of forms for all sufficiently large N >= 0. We generalize this result to projective R-varieties X as follows. Suppose that X is reduced without one-dimensional irreducible components, and X(R) is Zariski dense in X. Given everywhere positive global sections f of L^{\otimes2} and g of M^{\otimes2}, where L, M are invertible sheaves on X and M is ample, fg^N is a sum of squares of sections of L\otimes M^{\otimes N} for all large N >= 0. In fact we prove a much more general version with semi-algebraic…
In this paper we provide some stability criteria for systems of linear subspaces of $V \otimes W$ and for systems of quotient coherent sheaves, using, respectively, the Hilbert-Mumford numerical criterion and moment map. Along the way, we generalize the Gelfand-MacPherson correspondence [11] from point sets to sets of linear subspaces (of various dimensions). And, as an application, we provide some examples of $G$-ample cones without any top chambers. The results of this paper are based upon and/or generalize some earlier works of Klyachko [18], Totaro [28], Gelfand-MacPherson [11], Kapranov […
These are notes of a talk to the International Conference on Algebra in honor of A. I. Mal'tsev, Novosibirsk, USSR, 1989 (to appear in Contemporary Mathematics). The concept of a divisor with complex coefficients on an algebraic curve is introduced. We consider families of complex divisors, or, equivalently, families of invertible sheaves and define Arakelov-type metrics on some invertible sheaves produced from them on the base. We apply this technique to obtain a formula for the measure on the moduli space that gives tachyon correlators in string theory.
If $X$ is a smooth toric variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic and $L$ is an invertible sheaf on $X$, it is known that $F_* L$, the push-forward of $L$ along the Frobenius morphism of $X$, is a direct sum of invertible sheaves. We show that this property characterizes smooth projective toric varieties.
In this paper, we will look at actions on complex flag varieties $G/P$ of the torus $\hat{T}=\bigcap\limits_{α\inΔ\setminusΔ_P}\ker(α)$, and under reasonable assumptions, we will give a description of the set $X^{us}$ of unstable points for $\hat{T}$-linearized invertible sheaves. We will investigate the case where $P$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup, and show that $X^{us}$ can be written as a disjoint union of a Schubert variety and an opposite Schubert variety, and we deduce the vanishing of cohomology groups $H^i(Y,{\cal M})$ for invertible sheaves ${\cal M}$ on the quotient variety $Y$ for…
We introduce the volume function for hermitian invertible sheaves on an arithmetic variety as an analogue of the geometric volume function. The main result of this paper is the continuity of the arithmetic volume function. As a consequence, we have the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel formula for a nef hermitian invertible sheaf. We also give another several applications, for example, a generalized Hodge index theorem, an arithmetic Bogomolov-Gieseker's inequality, etc.
Let $L$ and $L'$ be two invertible sheaves over a projective variety $X$. We suppose that $L$ and $L'$ are generated by their global section spaces $Γ(L)$ and $Γ(L')$. We prove in this article that the morphism : \[Γ(L) \otimes Γ(L') \to Γ(L \otimes L')\] is surjective, in the case where $X$ is a rank one wonderful variety. In particular, the cone over a rank one wonderful variety defined by a very ample invertible sheaf is always normal. Soient $L$ et $L'$ deux faisceaux inversibles sur une variété projective $X$. On suppose que $L$ et $L'$ sont engendrés par leurs espaces de sections globale…
We develop theory of (possibly large) cotilting objects of injective dimension at most one in general Grothendieck categories. We show that such cotilting objects are always pure-injective and that they characterize the situation where the Grothendieck category is tilted using a torsion pair to another Grothendieck category. We prove that for Noetherian schemes with an ample family of line bundles a cotilting class is closed under injective envelopes if and only if it is invariant under twists by line bundles, and that such cotilting classes are parametrized by specialization closed subsets di…
In this article, we study the cohomology of some analytic sheaves on the complementary in the projective space of a suitable infinite collection of hyperplane like the Drinfel'd symetric space. In particular, the sheaf of invertible functions on these rigid spaces has no cohomology in degree greater or equal to $1$. This proves the vanishing of the Picard goup and the methods used give a convenient description of the global invertible functions.
Moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on a K3 or abelian surface with respect to a general ample divisor are shown to be locally factorial, with the exception of symmetric products of a K3 or abelian surface and the class of moduli spaces found by O'Grady. Consequently, since singular moduli space that do not belong to these exceptional cases have singularities in codimension $\geq4$ they do no admit projective symplectic resolutions.
Given a projective scheme $X$ over a field $k$, an automorphism $σ$ of $X$, and a $σ$-ample invertible sheaf $L$, one may form the twisted homogeneous coordinate ring $B = B(X, L, σ)$, one of the most fundamental constructions in noncommutative projective algebraic geometry. We study the primitive spectrum of $B$, as well as that of other closely related algebras such as skew and skew-Laurent extensions of commutative algebras. Over an algebraically closed, uncountable field $k$ of characteristic zero, we prove that that the primitive ideals of $B$ are characterized by the usual Dixmier-Moegli…
We study complete exceptional collections of coherent sheaves over Del Pezzo surfaces, which consist of three blocks such that inside each block all Ext groups between the sheaves are zero. We show that the ranks of all sheaves in such a block are the same and the three ranks corresponding to a complete 3-block exceptional collection satisfy a Markov-type Diophantine equation that is quadratic in each variable. For each Del Pezzo surface, there is a finite number of these equations; the complete list is given. The 3-string braid group acts by mutations on the set of complete 3-block exceptiona…
We construct a motivic Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum with a highly structured multiplication over smooth schemes over Dedekind domains which represents Levine's motivic cohomology. The latter is defined via Bloch's cycle complexes. Our method is by gluing p-completed and rational parts along an arithmetic square. Hereby the finite coefficient spectra are obtained by truncated étale sheaves (relying on the now proven Bloch-Kato conjecture) and a variant of Geisser's version of syntomic cohomology, and the rational spectra are the ones which represent Beilinson motivic cohomology. As an application…
The aim of this paper is to prove a generalization of a theorem of Rao for families of space curves, which caracterizes the biliaison classes of curves. First we introduce the concept of pseudo-isomorphism of coherent sheaves, which generalizes the concept of stable isomorphism. An N-type resolution for a family of curves $C$ over the local ring $A$, defined by an ideal $J$, is an exact sequence $0\to P\to N\to J\to 0$ where $N$ is a locally free sheaf on $P^3_A$ and $P$ is a direct sum of invertible sheaves $O_P(-n_i)$. We prove the two following results, when the residual field of $A$ is inf…
