We prove part of a conjecture of Borwein and Choi concerning an estimate on the square of the number of solutions to n=x^2+Ny^2 for a squarefree integer N.
We apply Tatuzawa's version of Siegel's theorem to derive two lower bounds on the size of the principal genus of positive definite binary quadratic forms.
The purpose of this paper is to present a collection of interesting generating functions for partitions which have connections to positive definite binary quadratic forms. In establishing our results we obtain some new Bailey pairs.
An integral quadratic form is called strictly $n$-regular if it primitively represents all quadratic forms in $n$ variables that are primitively represented by its genus. For any $n \geq 2$, it will be shown that there are only finitely many similarity classes of positive definite strictly $n$-regular integral quadratic forms in $n + 4$ variables. This extends the recent finiteness results for strictly regular quaternary quadratic forms by Earnest-Kim-Meyer (2014).
In this paper, we prove that a binary definite quadratic form over F_q[t], where q is odd, is completely determined up to equivalence by the polynomials it represents up to degree 3m-2, where m is the degree of its discriminant. We also characterize, when q>13, all the definite binary forms over F_q[t] that have class number one.
Given a positive definite binary quadratic form f, let r(n) = |{(x,y): f(x,y)=n}| denote its representation function. In this paper we study linear correlations of these functions. For example, if r_1, ..., r_k are representation functions, we obtain an asymptotic for sum_{n,d} r_1(n) r_2(n+d) ... r_k(n+ (k-1)d).
Since the study by Jacobi and Hecke, Hecke-type series have received a lot of attention. Unlike such series associated with indefinite quadratic forms, identities on Hecke-type series associated with definite quadratic forms are quite rare in the literature. Motivated by the works of Liu, we first establish many parameterized identities with two parameters by employing different $q$-transformation formulas and then deduce various Hecke-type identities associated with definite quadratic forms by specializing the choice of these two parameters. As applications, we utilize some of these Hecke-typ…
In this paper we give an algorithm for enumerating all primitive (positive) definite maximal Z-valued quadratic forms Q in n >= 3 variables with bounded class number h(Q) <= B. We do this by analyzing the exact mass formula [GHY], and bounding all relevant local invariants to give only finitely many possibilities. We also briefly describe an open-source implementation of this algorithm we have written in Python/Sage which explicitly enumerates all such quadratic forms of bounded class number in n >= 3 variables. Using this we determine that there are exactly 115 primitive positive definite max…
A collection $\mathcal S$ of equivalence classes of positive definite integral quadratic forms in $n$ variables is called an $n$-exceptional set if there exists a positive definite integral quadratic form which represents all equivalence classes of positive definite integral quadratic forms in $n$ variables except those in $\mathcal S$. We show that, among other results, for any given positive integers $m$ and $n$, there is always an $n$-exceptional set of size $m$ and there are only finitely many of them.
Following Bhargava and Hanke's celebrated 290-theorem, we prove a universality theorem for all positive-definite integer-valued quadratic forms that represent all positive integers coprime to $3$. In particular, if a positive-definite quadratic form represents all positive integers coprime to $3$ and $\leq 290$, then it represents all positive integers coprime to $3$. We use similar methods to those used by Rouse to prove (assuming GRH) that a positive-definite quadratic form representing every odd integer between $1$ and $451$ represents all positive odd integers.
A positive definite Hermitian lattice is said to be 2-universal if it represents all positive definite binary Hermitian lattices. We find all 2-universal ternary and quaternary Hermitian lattices over imaginary quadratic number fields.
Let $Q$ be a positive-definite quaternary quadratic form with integer coefficients. We study the problem of giving bounds on the largest positive integer $n$ that is locally represented by $Q$ but not represented. Assuming that $n$ is relatively prime to $D(Q)$, the determinant of the Gram matrix of $Q$, we show that $n$ is represented provided that \[ n \gg \max \{ N(Q)^{3/2 + ε} D(Q)^{5/4 + ε}, N(Q)^{2 + ε} D(Q)^{1 + ε} \}. \] Here $N(Q)$ is the level of $Q$. We give three other bounds that hold under successively weaker local conditions on $n$. These results are proven by bounding the Peter…
For a positive definite integral ternary quadratic form $f$, let $r(k,f)$ be the number of representations of an integer $k$ by $f$. The famous Minkowski-Siegel formula implies that if the class number of $f$ is one, then $r(k,f)$ can be written as a constant multiple of a product of local densities which are easily computable. In this article, we consider the case when the spinor genus of $f$ contains only one class. In this case the above also holds if $k$ is not contained in a set of finite number of square classes which are easily computable (see, for example, \cite{sp1} and \cite {sp2}). …
G.L. Watson \cite{watson1, watson2} introduced a set of transformations, called Watson transformations by most recent authors, in his study of the arithmetic of integral quadratic forms. These transformations change an integral quadratic form to another integral quadratic form with a smaller discriminants, but preserve many arithmetic properties at the same time. In this paper, we study the change of class numbers of positive definite ternary integral quadratic formula along a sequence of Watson transformations, thus providing a new and effective way to compute the class number of positive def…
A (positive definite integral) quadratic form is called almost 2-universal if it represents all (positive definite integral) binary quadratic forms except those in only finitely many equivalence classes. Oh [7] determined all almost 2-universal quinary diagonal quadratic forms remaining three as candidates. In this article, we prove that those three candidates are indeed almost 2-universal.
We study a form of refined class number formula (resp. type number formula) for maximal orders in totally definite quaternion algebras over real quadratic fields, by taking into consideration the automorphism groups of right ideal classes (resp. unit groups of maximal orders). For each finite noncyclic group $G$, we give an explicit formula for the number of conjugacy classes of maximal orders whose unit groups modulo center are isomorphic to $G$, and write down a representative for each conjugacy class. This leads to a complete recipe (even explicit formulas in special cases) for the refined …
Kaplansky conjectured that if two positive-definite real ternary quadratic forms have perfectly identical representations over $\mathbb{Z}$, they are constant multiples of regular forms, or is included in either of two families parametrized by $\mathbb{R}^2$ (so called, hexagonal and rhombohedral families). Our results aim to clarify the limitations imposed to such a pair by computational and theoretical approaches. Firstly, the result of an exhaustive search for such pairs of integral quadratic forms is presented, in order to provide a concrete version of the Kaplansky conjecture. The obtaine…
Using the circle method, we show that for a fixed positive definite integral quadratic form $A$, the expected asymptotic formula for the number of representations of a positive definite integral quadratic form $B$ by $A$ holds true, providing that the dimension of $A$ is large enough in terms of the dimension of $B$ and the maximum ratio of the successive minima of $B$, and providing that $B$ is sufficiently large in terms of $A$.
Let $f$ be a primitive positive definite integral binary quadratic form of discriminant $-D$ and let $π_f(x)$ be the number of primes up to $x$ which are represented by $f$. We prove several types of upper bounds for $π_f(x)$ within a constant factor of its asymptotic size: unconditional, conditional on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), and for almost all discriminants. The key feature of these estimates is that they hold whenever $x$ exceeds a small power of $D$ and, in some cases, this range of $x$ is essentially best possible. In particular, if $f$ is reduced then this optimal range…
We prove that the representations numbers of a ternary definite integral quadratic form defined over F_q[t], where F_q is a finite field of odd characteristic, determine its integral equivalence class when q is large enough with respect to its successive minima. Equivalently, such a quadratic form is determined up to integral isometry by its theta series.
In this note, we give an elementary proof of the following classical fact. Any positive definite ternary quadratic form over the rational numbers fails to represent infinitely many positive integers. For any ternary quadratic form (positive definite or indefinite), our method constructs certain congruence classes whose elements, up to a square factor, are the only elements not represented over the rational numbers by that form. In the case of a positive definite ternary form, we show that these classes are non-empty. This shows that the minimum number of variables in a positive definite quadra…
In this paper we generalize the result of Fouvry and Iwaniec dealing with prime values of the quadratic form $x^2 + y^2$ with one input restricted to a thin subset of the integers. We prove the same result with an arbitrary primitive positive definite binary quadratic form. In particular, for any positive definite binary quadratic form $F$ and binary linear form $G$, there exist infinitely many $\ell, m\in\mathbb{Z}$ such that both $F(\ell, m)$ and $G(\ell, m)$ are primes as long as there are no local obstructions.
This paper extends previous work on linear correlations of representation functions of positive definite binary quadratic forms to allow indefinite forms.
A positive-definite integral quadratic form is called regular if it represents every positive integer which is locally represented. In this article, we classify all regular diagonal quadratic forms of rank greater than 3.
We investigate the average distribution of primes represented by positive definite integral binary quadratic forms, the average being taken over negative fundamental discriminants in long ranges. In particular, we prove corresponding results of Bombieri-Vinogradov type and of Barban-Davenport-Halberstam type, although with shorter ranges than in the original theorems for primes in arithmetic progressions: The results imply that, for all $a>0$, the least prime that can be represented by any given positive definite binary quadratic form of discriminant $q$ is smaller than $|q|^{7+a}$ for all for…
In 1997, Kaplansky conjectured that if two positive definite ternary quadratic forms with integer coefficients have perfectly identical integral representations, then they are isometric, both regular, or included either of two families of ternary quadratic forms. In this article, we prove the existence of pairs of ternary quadratic forms representing same integers which are not in the Kaplansky's list.
An integral quadratic polynomial (with positive definite quadratic part) is called almost universal if it represents all but finitely many positive integers. In this paper, we provide a characterization of almost universal ternary quadratic polynomials with conductor 2.
In this article, we establish an average behaviour of the normalised Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenforms supported at the integers represented by any primitive integral positive definite binary quadratic form of fixed discriminant $D < 0$ when the class number $h(D) = 1$. We also obtain a quantitative result for the number of sign changes of the sequence of the normalised Fourier coefficients $λ_{f}(n)$ of the Hecke eigenforms $f$ where $n$ is represented by any primitive integral positive definite binary quadratic form of fixed discriminant $D < 0$ when the class number $h(D) = 1$ in…
Suppose $k$ is a positive integer. In this work, we establish formulas for for the number of representations of integers by the quadratic forms $$ x_{1}^{2}+\cdots+x_{k}^{2}+l\left(x_{k+1}^{2}+\cdots+x_{2k}^{2}\right) $$ for $l\in\{2,4\}$.
In this paper we consider certain quaternary quadratic forms and octonary quadratic forms and by using the theory of modular forms, we find formulae for the number of representations of a positive integer by these quadratic forms.
We apply the circle method with a Gaussian weight to obtain an asymptotic formula for the density of representations of non-zero integers by non-singular quadratic forms in at least four variables.
In this note we show that for a given irreducible binary quadratic form $f(x,y)$ with integer coefficients, whenever we have $f(x,y) = f(u,v)$ for integers $x,y,u,v$, there exists a rational automorphism of $f$ which sends $(x,y)$ to $(u,v)$.
Building on the classification of all characteristic polynomials of integer symmetric matrices having small span (span less than 4), we obtain a classification of small-span polynomials that are the characteristic polynomial of a Hermitian matrix over some quadratic integer ring. Taking quadratic integer rings as our base, we obtain as characteristic polynomials some low-degree small-span polynomials that are not the characteristic (or minimal) polynomial of any integer symmetric matrix.
In this note we study an analogy between a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over finite fields and a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over the rational number field. A question is posed of which an affirmative answer would imply the analogue of the Riemann hypothesis for elliptic curves over the rational number field.
The goal of this note is to provide an analysis of the positive integers that are represented everywhere locally, but not globally, by each of the 29 spinor regular positive definite integral ternary quadratic forms that are not regular.
We use ideas from our previous work to obtain some theorems that will allow us to obtain the integer solution of a quadratic polynomial in two variables that represents a natural number
A (positive definite primitive integral) quadratic form is called odd-regular if it represents every odd positive integer which is locally represented. In this paper, we show that there are at most 147 diagonal odd-regular ternary quadratic forms and prove the odd-regularities of all but 6 candidates.
An integral quadratic polynomial (with positive definite quadratic part) is called almost universal if it represents all but finitely many positive integers. In this paper, we introduce the conductor of a quadratic polynomial, and give an effective characterization of almost universal ternary quadratic polynomials with odd prime power conductor.
We classify all cyclotomic matrices over real quadratic integer rings and we show that this classification is the same as classifying cyclotomic matrices over the compositum all real quadratic integer rings. Moreover, we enumerate a related class of symmetric matrices; those matrices whose eigenvalues are contained inside the interval [-2,2] but whose characteristic polynomials are not in Z[x].
Let Q be a non-singular quadratic form with integer coefficients. When Q is indefinite we provide new upper bounds for the least non-trivial integral solution to the equation Q=0. When Q is positive definite we provide improved upper bounds for the least positive integer k such that the equation Q=k is insoluble in integers, despite being soluble modulo every prime power.
We give an infinite family of polynomials that have roots modulo every positive integer but fail to have rational roots. Each polynomial in this family is made up of monic quadratic factors that do not have linear term.
Let $K=\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)$ be a real quadratic field. We consider the additive semigroup $\mathcal O_K^+(+)$ of totally positive integers in $K$ and determine its generators (indecomposable integers) and relations; they can be nicely described in terms of the periodic continued fraction for $\sqrt D$. We also characterize all uniquely decomposable integers in $K$ and estimate their norms. Using these results, we prove that the semigroup $\mathcal O_K^+(+)$ completely determines the real quadratic field $K$.
We generalise remarks of Euler and of Perron by explaining how to detail all quadratic irrational integers for which the symmetric part of the period of their continued fraction expansion commences with prescribed partial quotients. The function field case is particularly striking.
We prove that for any countable set $A$ of real numbers, the set of binary indefinite quadratic forms $Q$ such that the closure of $Q(\mathbb{Z}^2)$ is disjoint from $A$ has full Hausdorff dimension.
Let $ψ$ and $F$ be positive definite forms with integral coefficients of equal degree. Using the circle method, we establish an asymptotic formula for the number of identical representations of $ψ$ by $F$, provided $ψ$ is everywhere locally representable and the number of variables of $F$ is large enough. In the quadratic case this supersedes a recent result due to Dietmann and Harvey. Another application addresses the number of primitive linear spaces contained in a hypersurface.
An integral quadratic polynomial is called regular if it represents every integer that is represented by the polynomial itself over the reals and over the $p$-adic integers for every prime $p$. It is called complete if it is of the form $Q({\mathbf x} + {\mathbf v})$, where $Q$ is an integral quadratic form in the variables ${\mathbf x} = (x_1, \ldots, x_n)$ and ${\mathbf v}$ is a vector in ${\mathbb Q}^n$. Its conductor is defined to be the smallest positive integer $c$ such that $c{\mathbf v} \in {\mathbb Z}^n$. We prove that for a fixed positive integer $c$, there are only finitely many equ…
Let Q be a non-singular diagonal quadratic form in at least four variables. We provide upper bounds for the number of integer solutions to the equation Q=0, which lie in a box with sides of length 2B, as B tends to infinity. The estimates obtained are completely uniform in the coefficients of the form, and become sharper as they grow larger in modulus.
It is shown that when a real quadratic integer $ξ$ of fixed norm $μ$ is considered, the fundamental unit $\varepsilon_d$ of the field $\mathbb{Q}(ξ) = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ satisfies $\log \varepsilon_d \gg (\log d)^2$ almost always. An easy construction of a more general set containing all the radicands $d$ of such fields is given via quadratic sequences, and the efficiency of this substitution is estimated explicitly. When $μ= -1$, the construction gives all $d$'s for which the negative Pell's equation $X^2 - d Y^2 = -1$ (or more generally $X^2 - D Y^2 = -4$) is soluble. When $μ$ is a prime,…
In this article we show that the form $x^2 + iy^2 + z^2 + iw^2$ represents all gaussian integers. The main tools used in this proof are Fermat's little theorem (over finite field extensions), the Mordell-Niven theorem (representation of some gaussians), and the generalized Euler-identity over finite field extensions.
We identify and analyse obstructions to factorisation of integer matrices into products $N^T N$ or $N^2$ of matrices with rational or integer entries. The obstructions arise as quadratic forms with integer coefficients and raise the question of the discrete range of such forms. They are obtained by considering matrix decompositions over a superalgebra. We further obtain a formula for the determinant of a square matrix in terms of adjugates of these matrix decompositions, as well as identifying a $\it co-Latin$ symmetry space.
We make some corrections to Nipp's tables of positive definite integral quaternary quadratic forms. They only affect $p$-adic densities and $p$-adic Jordan splittings in the Appendix of Nipp's book. There are no errors found in Nipp's list of quaternary forms for each genus.
