We generalise remarks of Euler and of Perron by explaining how to detail all quadratic irrational integers for which the symmetric part of the period of their continued fraction expansion commences with prescribed partial quotients. The function field case is particularly striking.
We prove that the formula giving the exact value of the irrationality exponent of regular continued fractions remains valid for semi-regular continued fractions satisfyiong certain conditions.
We study how the asymptotic irrationality exponent of a given generalized continued fraction \[ \K_{n=1}^\infty \frac{a_n}{b_n}\,,\quad a_n, b_n\in \mathbb{Z}^+, \] behaves as a function of growth properties of partial coefficient sequences $(a_n)$ and $(b_n)$.
A well known theorem of Lagrange states that the simple continued fraction of a real number $α$ is periodic if and only if $α$ is a quadratic irrational. We examine non-periodic and non-simple continued fractions formed by two interlacing geometric series and show that in certain cases they converge to quadratic irrationalities. This phenomenon is connected with certain sequences of polynomials whose properties we examine further.
Quadratic irrationals posses a periodic continued fraction expansion. Much less is known about cubic irrationals. We do not even know if the partial quotients are bounded, even though extensive computations suggest they might follow Kuzmin's probability law. Results are given for sequences of partial quotients of positive irrational numbers $ξ$ and $m \over ξ$ with $m$ a natural number. A big partial quotient in one sequence finds a connection in the other.
We extend a result of Hančl, Kolouch and Nair on the irrationality and transcendence of continued fractions. We show that for a sequence $\{α_n\}$ of algebraic integers of bounded degree, each attaining the maximum absolute value among their conjugates and satisfying certain growth conditions, the condition $$ \limsup_{n \rightarrow \infty} \vertα_n\vert^{\frac{1}{Dd^{n-1} \prod_{i=1}^{n-2}(Dd^i + 1)}} = \infty $$ implies that the continued fraction $α= [0;α_1, α_2, \dots]$ is not an algebraic number of degree less than or equal to $D$.
Euler gave recipes for converting alternating series of two types, I and II, into equivalent continued fractions, i.e., ones whose convergents equal the partial sums. A condition we prove for irrationality of a continued fraction then allows easy proofs that $e,\sin1$, and the primorial constant are irrational. Our main result is that, if a series of type II is equivalent to a simple continued fraction, then the sum is transcendental and its irrationality measure exceeds $2$. We construct all $\aleph_0^{\aleph_0}=\mathfrak{c}$ such series and recover the transcendence of the Davison--Shallit a…
We show several properties related to the structure of the family of classes of two-dimensional periodic continued fractions. This approach to the study of the family of classes of nonequivalent two dimexsional periodic continued fractions leads to the visualization of special subfamilies of continued fractions with torus triangulations (i.e. combinatorics of their fundamental domains) that possess explicit regularities.Several cases of such subfamilies are studied in detail; the method to construct other similar subfamilies is given.
We construct a countable family of multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithms, built out of five specific multidimensional continued fractions, and find a wide class of cubic irrational real numbers a so that either (a, a^2) or (a, a-a^2) is purely periodic with respect to an element in the family. These cubic irrationals seem to be quite natural, as we show that, for every cubic number field, there exists a pair (u,u') with u a unit in the cubic number field (or possibly the quadratic extension of the cubic number field by the square root of the discriminant) such that (u,u') has a perio…
This paper investigates the quadratic irrationals that arise as periodic points of the Gauss type shift associated to the odd continued fraction expansion. It is shown that these numbers, which we call O-reduced, when ordered by the length of the associated closed primitive geodesic on some modular surface $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$, are equidistributed with respect to the Lebesgue absolutely continuous invariant probability measure of the Odd Gauss shift.
Multidimensional continued fractions generalize classical continued fractions with the aim of providing periodic representations of algebraic irrationalities by means of integer sequences. However, there does not exist any algorithm that provides a periodic multidimensional continued fraction when algebraic irrationalities are given as inputs. In this paper, we provide a characterization for periodicity of Jacobi--Perron algorithm by means of linear recurrence sequences. In particular, we prove that partial quotients of a multidimensional continued fraction are periodic if and only if numerato…
Quadratic irrationals posses a periodic continued fraction expansion. Much less is known about cubic irrationals. We do not even know if the partial quotients are bounded, even though extensive computations suggest they might follow Kuzmin's probability law. Results are given for sequences of partial quotients of $\sqrt[3]{m}$ and $\sqrt[3]{m^2}$ with $m$ noncube. A big partial quotient in one sequence finds a connection in the other.
In this paper we answer certain questions posed by V.I. Arnold, namely, we study periods of continued fractions for solutions of quadratic equations in the form $x^2+p x=q$ with integer $p$ and $q$, $p^2+q^2\le R^2$. Our results concern the average sum of period elements and Gauss--Kuzmin statistics as $R\to\infty$.
It is widely believed that the continued fraction expansion of every irrational algebraic number $α$ either is eventually periodic (and we know that this is the case if and only if $α$ is a quadratic irrational), or it contains arbitrarily large partial quotients. Apparently, this question was first considered by Khintchine. A preliminary step towards its resolution consists in providing explicit examples of transcendental continued fractions. The main purpose of the present work is to present new families of transcendental continued fractions with bounded partial quotients. Our results are de…
While Roth's theorem states that the irrationality measure of all the irrational algebraic numbers is 2, and the same holds true over function fields in characteristic zero, some counter-examples were found over function fields in positive characteristic. This was put forward first by Mahler in 1949, in his fundamental paper on Diophantine approximation \cite{M}. It seems that, except for particular elements, as power series with bounded partial quotients, Roth's theorem holds. Until now, only one element, with unbounded partial quotients, discovered by Mills and Robbins \cite{MR} in 1986, has…
The concept of nearest integer is used to derive theorems and algorithms for the best approximations of an irrational by rational numbers, which are improved with the pigeonhole principle and used to offer an informed presentation of the theory of continued fractions.

The continued fraction expansion of an irrational number $α$ is eventually periodic if and only if $α$ is a quadratic irrationality. However, very little is known regarding the size of the partial quotients of algebraic real numbers of degree at least three. Because of some numerical evidence and a belief that these numbers behave like most numbers in this respect, it is often conjectured that their partial quotients form an unbounded sequence. More modestly, we may expect that if the sequence of partial quotients of an irrational number $α$ is, in some sense, "simple", then $α$ is either quad…
V.I. Arnold has experimentally established that the limit of the statistics of incomplete quotients of partial continued fractions of quadratic irrationalities coincides with the Gauss--Kuz'min statistics. Below we briefly prove this fact for roots of the equation $r x^2+p x=q$ with fixed $p$ and $r$ ($r>0$), and with random $q$, $q\le R$, $R\to \infty$. In Section 3 we estimate the sum of incomplete quotients of the period. According to the obtained bound, prior to the passage to the limit, incomplete quotients in average are logarithmically small. We also upper estimate the proportion of the…
We extend the results of our previous computer experiment performed on the first 2600 nontrivial zeros $γ_l$ of the Riemann zeta function calculated with 1000 digits accuracy to the set of 40000 first zeros given with 40000 decimal digits accuracy. We calculated the geometrical means of the denominators of continued fractions expansions of these zeros and for all cases we get values very close to the Khinchin's constant, which suggests that $γ_l$ are irrational. Next we have calculated the $n$-th square roots of the denominators $Q_n$ of the convergents of the continued fractions obtaining val…
This paper is devoted to a detailed exposition of geometry of continued fractions. We pay particular interest to the case of quadratic irrationalities and use the technique described to prove a criterion for the continued fraction of a quadratic surd to have a symmetric period.

In math.NT/0307308 we defined the irrationality base of an irrational number and, assuming a stronger hypothesis than the irrationality of Euler's constant, gave a conditional upper bound on its irrationality base. Here we develop the general theory of the irrationality exponent and base, giving formulas and bounds for them using continued fractions and the Fibonacci sequence. A theorem of Jarnik on Diophantine approximation yields numbers with prescribed irrationality measure. By another method we explicitly construct series with prescribed irrationality base. Many examples are given.
Periodic integer continued fractions (PICFs) are generalization of the regular periodic continued fractions (RPCFs). It is classical that a RPCF expansion of an irrational number is unique. However, it is no longer unique for a PICF expansion. Hence it is a natural problem to determine all PICF expansions of irrational numbers. In this paper, we determine certain type PICF expansions of square roots of positive square-free integers. To obtain this result, it plays an important role to determine integer points on certain PCF varieties appeared in Brock-Elkies-Jordan. As an application of these …
The Lévy constant of an irrational real number is defined by the exponential growth rate of the sequence of denominators of the principal convergents in its continued fraction expansion. Any quadratic irrational has an ultimately periodic continued fraction expansion and it is well-known that this implies the existence of a Lévy constant. Let $a, b$ be distinct positive integers. If the sequence of partial quotients of an irrational real number is a Sturmian sequence over $\{a, b\}$, then it has a Lévy constant, which depends only on $a$, $b$, and the slope of the Sturmian sequence, but not on…
We have calculated numerically geometrical means of the denominators of the continued fraction approximations to the Brun constant B2. We get values close to the Khinchin constant. Next we calculated the n-th square roots of the denominators of the n-th convergents of these continued fractions obtaining values close to the Khinchin-Levy constant. These two results suggests that B2 is irrational, supporting the common believe that there is an infinity of twins.
We investigate the continued fraction expansion of the infinite products $g(x) = x^{-1}\prod_{t=0}^\infty P(x^{-d^t})$ where polynomials $P(x)$ satisfy $P(0)=1$ and $°(P)<d$. We construct relations between partial quotients of $g(x)$ which can be used to get recurrent formulae for them. We provide that formulae for the cases $d=2$ and $d=3$. As an application, we prove that for $P(x) = 1+ux$ where $u$ is an arbitrary rational number except 0 and 1, and for any integer $b$ with $|b|>1$ such that $g(b)\neq0$ the irrationality exponent of $g(b)$ equals two. In the case $d=3$ we provide a partial …
We have used the first 2600 nontrivial zeros gamma_l of the Riemann zeta function calculated with 1000 digits accuracy and developed them into the continued fractions. We calculated the geometrical means of the denominators of these continued fractions and for all cases we get values close to the Khinchin's constant, what suggests that gamma_l are irrational. Next we have calculated the n-th square roots of the denominators q_n of the convergents of the continued fractions obtaining values close to the Khinchin-Levy constant, again supporting the common believe that gamma_l are irrational.
It is known that the continued fraction expansion of a real number is periodic if and only if the number is a quadratic irrational. In an attempt to generalize this phenomenon to other settings, Jun-Ichi Tamura and Shin-Ichi Yasutomi have developed a new algorithm for multidimensional continued fractions (Algebraic Jacobi-Perron algorithm) that involves cubic irrationals, and proved periodicity in some cubic number fields, such as $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{m^3+1})$ where $m\in\mathbb{Z}$, and $\mathbb{Q}(δ_m)$ where $δ_m$ is a root of $x^3-mx+1=0,\,\,m\in\mathbb{Z},\,\, m\geq3$ with the algorithm. …
A classical theorem in continued fractions due to Serret shows that for any two irrational numbers x and y related by a transformation $γ$ in PGL(2,Z) there exist s and t for which the complete quotients x_s and y_t coincide. In this paper we give an upper bound in terms of $γ$ for the smallest indices s and t.
This paper deals with quadratic irrationals of the form $m/q+\sqrt v$ for fixed positive integers $v$ and $q$, $v$ not a square, and varying integers $m$, $(m,q)=1$. Two numbers $m/q+\sqrt v$, $n/q+\sqrt v$ of this kind are equivalent (in a classical sense) if their continued fraction expansions can be written with the same period. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the equivalence in terms of solutions of Pell's equation. Moreover, we determine the number of equivalence classes to which these quadratic irrationals belong.
We discuss the form of certain algebraic continued fractions in the field of power series over $F_p$, where p is an odd prime number. This leads to give explicit continued fractions in these fields, satisfying an explicit algebraic equation of arbitrary degree $d\geq 2$ and having an irrationality measure equal to $d$. Our results are based on a mysterious finite sequence of rational numbers.
We show a correspondence between simple continued fraction expansions of irrational numbers and irreducible permutative representations of the Cuntz algebra ${\cal O}_{\infty}$. With respect to the correspondence, it is shown that the equivalence of real numbers with respect to modular transformations is equivalent to the unitary equivalence of representations. Furthermore, we show that quadratic irrationals are related to irreducible permutative representations of ${\cal O}_{\infty}$ with a cycle.
In this paper we establish properties of independence for the continued fraction expansions of two algebraic numbers. Roughly speaking, if the continued fraction expansions of two irrational algebraic numbers have the same long sub-word, then the two continued fraction expansions have the same tails. If the two expansions have mirror symmetry long sub-words, then both the two algebraic numbers are quadratic. Applying the above results, we prove a theorem analogous to the Roth's theorem about approximation by algebraic numbers.
Given a real number $α$ and a natural number $N$, the Sudler product is defined by $P_N(α) = \prod_{r=1}^{N} 2 \left\lvert \sin(π\left(rα\right))\right\rvert.$ Denoting by $F_n$ the $n$--th Fibonacci number and by $ϕ$ the Golden Ratio, we show that for $F_{n-1} \leq N < F_n$, we have $P_{F_{n-1}}(ϕ)\leq P_N(ϕ) \leq P_{F_{n}-1}(ϕ)$ and $\min_{N \geq 1} P_N(ϕ) = P_1(ϕ)$, thereby proving a conjecture of Grepstad, Kaltenböck and Neumüller. Furthermore, we find closed expressions for $\liminf_{N \to \infty} P_N(ϕ)$ and $\limsup_{N \to \infty} \frac{P_N(ϕ)}{N}$ whose numerical values can be approxim…
We detail the continued fraction expansion of the square root of the general monic quartic polynomial, noting that each line of the expansion corresponds to addition of the divisor at infinity. We analyse the data yielded by the general expansion. In that way we obtain `elliptic sequences' satisfying Somos relations. I mention several new results on such sequences. The paper includes a detailed `reminder exposition' on continued fractions of quadratic irrationals in function fields.
For a given quadratic irrational $α$, let us denote by $D(α)$ the length of the periodic part of the continued fraction expansion of $α$. We prove that for a positive integer $d$, which is not a perfect square, the sequence $(D(n\sqrt{d}))_{n=1}^{\infty}$ has infinitely many limit points.
The Lagrange theorem on continued fractions states that a number is a quadratic surd if and only if its continued fraction expansion is eventually periodic. The current paper is devoted to a multidimensional generalization of this fact. As a multidimensional analog of continued fractions so called Klein polyhedra are considered: given an irrational lattice in an n-dimensional Euclidean space, its Klein polyhedron is defined as the convex hull of nonzero lattice points with nonnegative coordinates.
We construct a class of quadratic irrationals having continued fractions of period $n\geq2$ with "small" partial quotients for which certain integer multiples have continued fractions of period $1$, $2$ or $4$ with "large" partial quotients. We then show that numbers in the period of the new continued fraction are simple functions of the numbers in the periods of the original continued fraction. We give generalizations of some of the continued fractions and show that polynomials arising from the generalizations are related to Chebyshev and Fibonacci polynomials. We then show that some of these…
We examine various properties of the continued fraction expansions of matrix eigenvector slopes of matrices from the SL(2, Z) group. We calculate the average period length, maximum period length, average period sum, maximum period sum and the distributions of 1s 2s and 3s in the periods versus the radius of the Ball within which the matrices are located. We also prove that the periods of continued fraction expansions from the real irrational roots of x2 + px + q = 0 are always palindromes.
Many generalizations of continued fractions, where the reciprocal function has been replaced by a more general function, have been studied, and it is often asked whether such generalized expansions can have nice properties. For instance, we might ask that algebraic numbers of a given degree have periodic expansions, just as quadratic irrationals have periodic continued fractions; or we might ask that familiar transcendental constants such as $e$ or $π$ have periodic or terminating expansions. In this paper, we show that there exist such generalized continued function expansions with essentiall…
We explicitly describe a noteworthy transcendental continued fraction in the field of power series over Q, having irrationality measure equal to 3. This continued fraction is a generating function of a particular sequence in the set {1, 2}. The origin of this sequence, whose study was initiated in a recent paper, is to be found in another continued fraction, in the field of power series over $\mathbb{F}\_3$, which satisfies a simple algebraic equation of degree 4, introduced thirty years ago by D. Robbins.
Let $θ$ and $ρ$ be real numbers with $0 \le θ, ρ< 1$ and $θ$ irrational. We show that the Hecke-Mahler series $$ F_{θ, ρ} (z_1, z_2) = \sum_{k_1 \ge 1} \, \sum_{k_2 = 1}^{\lfloor k_1 θ+ ρ\rfloor} \, z_1^{k_1} z_2^{k_2}, $$ where $\lfloor \cdot \rfloor$ denotes the integer part function, takes transcendental values at any algebraic point $(β, α)$ with $0 < |β|, |βα^θ| < 1$. This extends earlier results of Mahler (1929) and Loxton and van der Poorten (1977), who settled the case $ρ=0$. Furthermore, for positive integers $b$ and $a$, with $b \ge 2$ and $a$ congruent to $1$ modulo $b-1$, we give t…
In this paper we describe the group of symmetries of a two-dimensional continued fraction. As a multidimensional generalization of continued fractions we consider Klein polyhedra. We distinguish two types of symmetries: the Dirichlet-type ones, that correspond to the multiplication by units of the corresponding number field, and so called palindromic ones. The main result of the paper is a criterion for a two-dimensional continued fraction to have a palindromic symmetry. This criterion is analogous to the criterion for the period of a quadratic irrationality to be symmetric.
