A collection $\mathcal S$ of equivalence classes of positive definite integral quadratic forms in $n$ variables is called an $n$-exceptional set if there exists a positive definite integral quadratic form which represents all equivalence classes of positive definite integral quadratic forms in $n$ variables except those in $\mathcal S$. We show that, among other results, for any given positive integers $m$ and $n$, there is always an $n$-exceptional set of size $m$ and there are only finitely many of them.
We estimate the number of primes represented by a general quadratic polynomial with discriminant $Δ$, assuming that the corresponding real character is exceptional.
The goal of this note is to provide an analysis of the positive integers that are represented everywhere locally, but not globally, by each of the 29 spinor regular positive definite integral ternary quadratic forms that are not regular.
In this paper, we study the representations of integral quadratic polynomials. Particularly, it is shown that there are only finitely many equivalence classes of positive ternary universal integral quadratic polynomials, and that there are only finitely many regular ternary triangular forms. A more general discussion of integral quadratic polynomials over a Dedekind domain inside a global field is also given.
Motivated by known examples of global integrals which represent automorphic L-functions, this paper initiates the study of a certain two-dimensional array of global integrals attached to any reductive algebraic group, indexed by maximal parabolic subgroups in one direction and by unipotent conjugacy classes in the other. Fourier coefficients attached to unipotent classes, Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of automorphic representations, and an identity which, empirically, appears to constrain the unfolding process are presented in detail with examples selected from the exceptional groups. Two new Eul…
Using half-integral weight modular forms we give a criterion for the existence of real quadratic $p$-rational fields. For $p=5$ we prove the existence of infinitely many real quadratic $p$-rational fields.
In the paper we obtain the asymtotic number of integral quadratic polynomials with bounded heights and discriminants as the upper bound of heights tends to infinity.
We consider infinite parametric families of octic fields, that are quartic extensions of quadratic fields. We describe all relative power integral bases of the octic fields over the quadratic subfields.
Erdős and Hall studied the angular distribution of Gaussian integers with a fixed norm. We generalize their result to the angular distribution of integral ideal numbers with a fixed norm in any quadratic extension.
We show that the density of quadratic forms in $n$ variables over $\mathbb Z_p$ that are isotropic is a rational function of $p$, where the rational function is independent of $p$, and we determine this rational function explicitly. When real quadratic forms in $n$ variables are distributed according to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) of random matrix theory, we determine explicitly the probability that a random such real quadratic form is isotropic (i.e., indefinite). As a consequence, for each $n$, we determine an exact expression for the probability that a random integral quadratic f…
We propose a method for determining which integers can be written as a sum of two integral squares for quadratic fields $\Q(\sqrt{\pm p})$, where $p$ is a prime.
We give formulas for local densities of diagonal integral ternary quadratic forms at odd primes. Exponential sums and quadratic Gauss sums are used to obtain these formulas. These formulas (along with 2-adic densities and Siegel's mass formula) can be used to compute the representation numbers of certain ternary quadratic forms.
In this note, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for determining which integers can be written as a sum of two integral squares for certain quadratic fields by using the integral Brauer-manin obstruction (see \cite{CTX}). The condition is computable and originally from the reciprocity law.
G.L. Watson \cite{watson1, watson2} introduced a set of transformations, called Watson transformations by most recent authors, in his study of the arithmetic of integral quadratic forms. These transformations change an integral quadratic form to another integral quadratic form with a smaller discriminants, but preserve many arithmetic properties at the same time. In this paper, we study the change of class numbers of positive definite ternary integral quadratic formula along a sequence of Watson transformations, thus providing a new and effective way to compute the class number of positive def…
We use the method of quadratic Chabauty on the quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of modular curves $X_0(N)$ by their Fricke involutions to provably compute all the rational points of these curves for prime levels $N$ of genus four, five, and six. We find that the only such curves with exceptional rational points are of levels $137$ and $311$. In particular there are no exceptional rational points on those curves of genus five and six. More precisely, we determine the rational points on the curves $X_0^+(N)$ for $N=137,173,199,251,311,157,181,227,263,163,197,211,223,269,271,359$.
In this paper, a zeta integral for the space of binary cubic forms is associated with the subregular unipotent contribution to the geometric side of the Arthur trace formula for the split exceptional group $G_2$.
We define a notion of modular forms of half-integral weight on the quaternionic exceptional groups. We prove that they have a well-behaved notion of Fourier coefficients, which are complex numbers defined up to multiplication by $\pm 1$. We analyze the minimal modular form $Θ_{F_4}$ on the double cover of $F_4$, following Loke--Savin and Ginzburg. Using $Θ_{F_4}$, we define a modular form of weight $\frac{1}{2}$ on (the double cover of) $G_2$. We prove that the Fourier coefficients of this modular form on $G_2$ see the $2$-torsion in the narrow class groups of totally real cubic fields.
Investigations of monogenity and power integral bases were recently extended from the absolute case (over Q) to the relative case (over algebraic number fields). Formerly, in the relative case we only succeeded to calculate generators of power integral bases when the ground field is an imaginary quadratic field. This is the first case when we consider monogenity in the more difficult case, in extensions of real quadratic fields. We give efficient algorithms for calculating generators of power integral bases in cubic and quartic extensions of real quadratic fields, more exactly in composites of…
We study an asymptotic formula for counting integral points over an equation defined by a non-degenerated indefinite integral ternary quadratic form $f$ representing a non-zero integer $a$ such that $-a\cdot det(f)$ is square over a number field. In particular, we prove that the finite part of this asymptotic formula is given by the product of local density times $1-p^{-1}$ over all finite primes $p$ over $\Bbb Z$.
Let $K= \mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ be a quadratic field and $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ be its ring of integers. We study the solvability of the Diophantine equation $r + s + t = rst = 2$ in $\mathcal{O}_{K}$. We prove that except for $d= -7, -1, 17$ and $101$ this system is not solvable in the ring of integers of other quadratic fields.
This paper treats certain integral lattices with respect to ternary quadratic forms, which are obtained from the data of a non-zero element and a maximal lattice in a quaternary quadratic space. Such a lattice can be described by means of an order associated with the lattice in the even Clifford algebra of the ternary form. This provides a correspondence between the genus of the lattice and that of the order.
We apply Freeman's variant of the Davenport-Heilbronn method to investigate the exceptional set of real numbers not close to some value of a given real diagonal form at an integral argument. Under appropriate conditions, we show that the exceptional set in the interval [-N,N] has measure O(N^{1-c}), for a positive number c.
Let K/F be a quadratic extension of number fields. After developing a theory of the Eisenstein series over F, we prove a formula which expresses a partial zeta function of K as a certain integral of the Eisenstein series. As an application, we obtain a limit formula of Kronecker's type which relates the 0-th Laurent coefficients at s=1 of zeta functions of K and F.
In this paper, we investigate the conditions under which a diagonal quadratic form $\sum_{i=1}^{m}a_i X_i^2$ represents every $n \times n$ integral matrix, where $a_i$ ($1 \leq i \leq m$) are integers. For $n=2$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition. Also we give some sufficient conditions for each $n \geq 2$ where $a_i$ ($1 \leq i \leq m$) are pairwisely coprime.
We investigate the probability that a random quadratic form in ${\mathbb{Z}}[x_1,...,x_n]$ has a totally isotropic subspace of a given dimension. We show that this global probability is a product of local probabilities. Our main result computes these local probabilities for quadratic forms over the $p$-adics. The formulae we obtain are rational functions in $p$ invariant upon substituting $p \mapsto 1/p$.
Let $M=Q(i\sqrt{d})$ be any imaginary quadratic field with a positive square-free $d$. Consider the polynomial \[ f(x)=x^3-ax^2-(a+3)x-1, \] with a parameter $a\in Z$. Let $K=M(α)$, where $α$ is a root of $f$. This is an infinite parametric family of sextic fields depending on two parameters, $a$ and $d$. Applying relative Thue equations we determine the relative power integral bases of these sextic fields over their quadratic subfields. Using these results we also determine generators of (absolute) power integral bases of the sextic fields.
We give a method for the computation of integral points on a hyperelliptic curve of odd degree over the rationals whose genus equals the Mordell-Weil rank of its Jacobian. Our approach consists of a combination of the $p$-adic approximation techniques introduced in previous work with the Mordell-Weil sieve
We study the failure of a local-global principle for the existence of $l$-isogenies for elliptic curves over number fields $K$. Sutherland has shown that over $\mathbb{Q}$ there is just one failure, which occurs for $l=7$ and a unique $j$-invariant, and has given a classification of such failures when $K$ does not contain the quadratic subfield of the $l$'th cyclotomic field. In this paper we provide a classification of failures for number fields which do contain this quadratic field, and we find a new `exceptional' source of such failures arising from the exceptional subgroups of $\mbox{PGL}_…
A number field $k$ admits a binary integral quadratic form which represents all integers locally but not globally if and only if the class number of $k$ is bigger than one. In this case, there are only finitely many classes of such binary integral quadratic forms over $k$. A number field $k$ admits a ternary integral quadratic form which represents all integers locally but not globally if and only if the class number of $k$ is even. In this case, there are infinitely many classes of such ternary integral quadratic forms over $k$. An integral quadratic form over a number field $k$ with more tha…
We show that the density of quadratic forms in $n$ variables over ${\mathbb Z}_p$ that are isotropic is a rational function in $p$, where the rational function is independent of $p$, and we determine this rational function explicitly. As a consequence, for each $n$, we determine the probability that a random integral quadratic form in $n$ variables is isotropic. In particular, we show that the probability that a random integral quaternary quadratic form is isotropic is $\approx 97.0\%$, in the case where the coefficients of the quadratic form are independently and uniformly distributed in the …
Let $f$ be a positive definite integral ternary quadratic form and let $r(k,f)$ be the number of representations of an integer $k$ by $f$. In this article we study the number of representations of squares by $f$. We say the genus of $f$, denoted by $\text{gen}(f)$, is indistinguishable by squares if for any integer $n$, $r(n^2,f)=r(n^2,f')$ for any quadratic form $f' \in \text{gen}(f)$. We find some non trivial genera of ternary quadratic forms which are indistinguishable by squares. We also give some relation between indistinguishable genera by squares and the conjecture given by Cooper and L…
Let $f$ be a positive definite (non-classic) integral quaternary quadratic form. We say $f$ is strongly $s$-regular if it satisfies a regularity property on the number of representations of squares of integers. In this article, we prove that there are only finitely many strongly $s$-regular quaternary quadratic forms up to isometry if the minimum of the nonzero squares that are represented by the quadratic form is fixed. Furthermore, we show that there are exactly $34$ strongly $s$-regular diagonal quaternary quadratic forms representing one (see Table $1$). In particular, we use eta-quotients…
Given an isotropic quadratic form over a number field which assumes a value $t$, we investigate the distribution of points at which this value is assumed. Building on the previous work about the distribution of small-height zeros of quadratic forms, we produce bounds on height of points outside of some algebraic sets in a quadratic space at which the form assumes the value $t$. Our bounds on height are explicit in terms of the heights of the form, the space, the algebraic set and the value $t$.
For each positive integer $n$, let $g_{\mathbb Z}(n)$ be the smallest integer such that if an integral quadratic form in $n$ variables can be written as a sum of squares of integral linear forms, then it can be written as a sum of $g_{\mathbb Z}(n)$ squares of integral linear forms. We show that as $n$ goes to infinity, the growth of $g_{\mathbb Z}(n)$ is at most an exponential of $\sqrt{n}$. Our result improves the best known upper bound on $g_{\mathbb Z}(n)$ which is in the order of an exponential of $n$. We also define an analogous number $g_{\mathcal O}^*(n)$ for writing hermitian forms ov…
A quadratic form over a non-archimedian local field of characteristic zero $F$ is called universal if it is integral and it represents all non-zero integers of $F$. Xu Fei and Zhang Yang determined all universal quadratic forms in the case when $F$ is non-dyadic. In the more complicated dyadic case, when $F$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb Q_2$, they solved the same problem only in the ternary case. In our paper we solve this problem in the general case. Our result is given in terms of BONGs (bases of norm generators) but in section 3 of the paper we translate (without a proof) our result in…
We study the quadratic integral points-that is, (S-)integral points defined over any extension of degree two of the base field-on a curve defined in P_3 by a system of two Pell equations. Such points belong to three families explicitly described, or belong to a finite set whose cardinality may be explicitly bounded in terms of the base field, the equations defining the curve and the set S. We exploit the peculiar geometry of the curve to adapt the proof of a theorem of Vojta, which in this case does not apply.
In a previous work we apply lattice point theorems on hyperbolic spaces obtaining asymptotic formulas for the number of integral representations of negative integers by quadratic and hermitian forms of signature (n,1) lying in Euclidean balls of increasing radius. This formula involves an error term that depends on the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the corresponding congruence hyperbolic manifolds. The aim of this paper is to compare the error term obtained by experimental computations, with the error term mentioned above, for several choices of quadratic and her…
We translate O'Meara's classification Theorem 93:28 in terms of BONGs. BONGs, short for "basis of norm generators", are a new way of describing quadratic lattices, an alternative to the traditional Jordan decompositions. They were introduced in [B]. Our result has its own merits as it is somewhat simpler than O'Meara's 93:28. However, it's main importance is that it is a prerequisite for a future work where we solve the more complicated problem of representation. [B] C. N. Let $K$ be a complex bi-quadratic field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{K}$. For $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-m}$, $\sqrt{n}$), where $ m \equiv 3 \pmod 4 $ and $ n \equiv 1 \pmod 4$, we prove that every algebraic integer can be written as sum of integral squares. Using this, we prove that for any complex bi-quadratic field $K$, every element of $4\mathcal{O}_K$ can be written as sum of five integral squares. In addition, we show that the Pythagoras number of ring of integers of any CM field is at most five. Moreover, we give two classes of complex bi-quadratic fields for which $p(\mathcal{O}_{K…
For diophantine equations of the form ax^2+bxy+cy^2+g=0 over Z whose coefficients satisfy some assumptions, we show that a condition with respect to Artin reciprocity map, which we call the Artin condition, is the only obstruction to the local-global principle for integral solutions of the equation. Some concrete examples are presented.
Let $S \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be finite. Is there a positive definite quadratic form that fails to represent only those elements in $S$? For $S = \emptyset$, this was solved (for classically integral forms) by the $15$-Theorem of Conway-Schneeberger in the early 1990s and (for all integral forms) by the $290$-Theorem of Bhargava-Hanke in the mid-2000s. In 1938 Halmos attempted to list all weighted sums of four squares that failed to represent $S=\{m\}$; of his $88$ candidates, he could provide complete justifications for all but one. In the same spirit, we ask, "for which $S = \{m, n\}$ does th…
In this paper, we investigate sign changes of Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight cusp forms. In a fixed square class $t\mathbb{Z}^2$, we investigate the sign changes in the $tp^2$-th coefficient as $p$ runs through the split or inert primes over the ring of integers in a quadratic extension of the rationals. We show that sign changes occur in both sets of primes when there exists a prime dividing the discriminant of the field which does not divide the level of the cusp form and find an explicit condition that determines whether sign changes occur when every prime dividing the discrim…
A (positive definite integral) quadratic form is called almost 2-universal if it represents all (positive definite integral) binary quadratic forms except those in only finitely many equivalence classes. Oh [7] determined all almost 2-universal quinary diagonal quadratic forms remaining three as candidates. In this article, we prove that those three candidates are indeed almost 2-universal.
