In this note we study an analogy between a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over finite fields and a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over the rational number field. A question is posed of which an affirmative answer would imply the analogue of the Riemann hypothesis for elliptic curves over the rational number field.
We analyze log-algebraic power series identities for formal groups of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ which arise from modular parametrizations. We further investigate applications to special values of elliptic curve $L$-functions.
Consider elliptic curves $ E:\ y^{2} = x^{3} + D^{3} $ defined over the quadratic field $\ \Q(\sqrt{-3}) $. Hecke $ L-$series attached to $ E $ are studied, formulae for their values at $ s=1, $ and bound of 3-adic valuations of these values are given. These results are complementary to those in [Q] and [QZ], and are consistent with the predictions of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
Following Petersson, we study the parabolic, hyperbolic and elliptic expansions of holomorphic cusp forms and the associated Poincaré series. We show how these ideas extend to the space of second-order cusp forms.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field K. Michael Larsen conjectured that for any finitely generated subgroup G of Gal(\bar K/K), the Mordell-Weil rank of E is unbounded in number fields fixed by G. We prove that the conjecture holds over K=Q for both the analytic rank and the p-infinity Selmer rank of E for every odd prime p. For arbitrary E/K, we show that Larsen's conjecture follows from the standard conjectures for ranks of elliptic curves, provided K has a real place or E has non-integral j-invariant.
In this article we give evaluations of certain series of hyperbolic functions using Jacobi elliptic functions theory. We also define some new functions that enable us to give characterization of not solvable class of series.
We express the real period of a family of elliptic curves in terms of classical hypergeometric series. This expression is analogous to a result of Ono which relates the trace of Frobenius of the same family of elliptic curves to a Gaussian hypergeometric series. This analogy provides further evidence of the interplay between classical and Gaussian hypergeometric series.
A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. It is described by a system of four equations with respect to six variables. The cuboid factor equations were derived from these four equations by symmetrization procedure. They constitute a system of eight polynomial equations, which has been solved parametrically. In the present paper its parametric solution is expressed through intersections or rational and elliptic curves arranged into parametric families.
We compute the image of Enriquez' elliptic KZB associator in the (maximal) meta-abelian quotient of the fundamental Lie algebra of a once-punctured elliptic curve. Our main result is an explicit formula for this image in terms of Eichler integrals of Eisenstein series, and is analogous to Deligne's computation of the depth one quotient of the Drinfeld associator. We also show how to retrieve Zagier's extended period polynomials of Eisenstein series, as well as the values at zero of Beilinson--Levin's elliptic polylogarithms from the meta-abelian elliptic KZB associator.
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$ and let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $K$, defined either by an equation of the form $y^{2} = f(x)$ with degree $3$ or as the Jacobian of a curve defined by an equation of the form $y^{2} = f(x)$ with degree $4$. We obtain generators over $K$ of the $8$-division field $K(E[8])$ of $E$ given as formulas in terms of the roots of the polynomial $f$, and we explicitly describe the action of a particular automorphism in $\mathrm{Gal}(K(E[8]) / K)$.
In this note, we present a complete and corrected version of Kenku's method in the proof of the nonexistence of 27-torsion on elliptic curves over quadratic fields and show why this method can not be applied to the cases of 32- and 24-torsion on elliptic curves over cubic fields.
B.C. Berndt evaluated special values of the cotangent Dirichlet series. T. Arakawa studied a generalization of the series, or generalized cotangent Dirichlet series, and gave its transformation formulae. In this paper, we establish an elliptic analogue of the generalized cotangent Dirichlet series and give its transformation formulae at some integer arguments. As a corollary, we obtain the transformation formulae of the generalized cotangent Dirichlet series at some integer arguments which are the part of Arakawa's transformation formulae. Those transformation formulae give the special values …
We develop a unified approach to the construction of the hyperbolic and elliptic Eisenstein series on a finite volume hyperbolic Riemann surface. Specifically, we derive expressions for the hyperbolic and elliptic Eisenstein series as integral transforms of the kernel of a wave operator. Established results in the literature relate the wave kernel to the heat kernel, which admits explicit construction from various points of view. Therefore, we obtain a sequence of integral transforms which begins with the heat kernel, obtains a Poisson and wave kernel, and then yields the hyperbolic and ellipt…
Let $Γ\subset\mathrm{PSL}_{2}(\mathbb{R})$ be a Fuchsian subgroup of the first kind acting by fractional linear transformations on the upper half-plane $\mathbb{H}$, and let $M=Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ be the associated finite volume hyperbolic Riemann surface. Associated to any cusp of $M$, there is the classically studied non-holomorphic (parabolic) Eisenstein series. In 1979, Kudla and Millson studied non-holomorphic (hyperbolic) Eisenstein series associated to any closed geodesic on $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$. In 2004, Jorgenson and Kramer introduced so-called elliptic Eisenstein series associa…
We develop two applications of the Kronecker's limit formula associated to elliptic Eisenstein series: A factorization theorem for holomorphic modular forms, and a proof of Weil's reciprocity law. Several examples of the general factorization results are computed, specifically for certain moonshine groups, congruence subgroups, and, more generally, non-compact subgroups with one cusp. In particular, we explicitly compute the Kronecker limit function associated to certain elliptic points for a few small level moonshine groups.
Following the paper "Note on theta series for Niemeier lattices", we study some congruence properties satisfied by the theta series associated with Niemeier lattices.
Using explicit constructions of the Weierstrass mock modular form, we offer a closed formula for generating the values of shifted convolution $L$-values for certain elliptic curves that can be computed to arbitrary precision. These identities provide a surprising relation between weight $2$ newforms and shifted convolution $L$-values.
Conjecturally, the parity of the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve over a number field K is determined by its root number. The root number is a product of local root numbers, so the rank modulo 2 is conjecturally the sum over all places of K of a function of elliptic curves over local fields. This note shows that there can be no analogue for the rank modulo 3, 4 or 5, or for the rank itself. In fact, standard conjectures for elliptic curves imply that there is no analogue modulo n for any n>2, so this is purely a parity phenomenon.
We express all the newforms of weight $2$ and levels $30$, $33$, $35$, $38$, $40$, $42$, $44$, $45$ as linear combinations of eta quotients and Eisenstein series, and list their corresponding strong Weil curves. Let $p$ denote a prime and $E (\zz_p)$ denote the the group of algebraic points of an elliptic curve $E$ over $\zz_p$. We give a generating function for the order of $E (\zz_p)$ for certain strong Weil curves in terms of eta quotients and Eisenstein series. We then use our generating functions to deduce congruence relations for the order of $E (\zz_p)$ for those strong Weil curves.
The classical Kronecker limit formula describes the constant term in the Laurent expansion at the first order pole of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to the cusp at infinity of the modular group. Recently, the meromorphic continuation and Kronecker limit type formulas were investigated for non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to hyperbolic and elliptic elements of a Fuchsian group of the first kind by Jorgenson, Kramer and the first named author. In the present work, we realize averaged versions of all three types of Eisenstein series for $Γ_0(N)$ as regularized theta …
We prove the cyclic sum formulas for certain two-parameter multiple series. These are new and non-trivial generalizations of the cyclic sum formulas for multiple zeta values and multiple zeta-star values.
Consider an elliptic curve defined over an imaginary quadratic field $K$ with good reduction at the primes above $p\geq 5$ and has complex multiplication by the full ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of $K$. In this paper, we construct $p$-adic analogues of the Eisenstein-Kronecker series for such elliptic curve as Coleman functions on the elliptic curve. We then prove $p$-adic analogues of the first and second Kronecker limit formulas by using the distribution relation of the Kronecker theta function.
We give a short and "soft" proof of the asymptotic orthogonality of Fourier coefficients of Poincaré series for classical modular forms as well as for Siegel cusp forms, in a qualitative form.
We prove a sup norm bound on the real-analytic Eisenstein series, of the form $E(z, 1/2 + iT) \ll T^{3/8 + \varepsilon}$, uniformly for $z$ in a fixed compact subset of $\mathbb{H}$.
We consider some asymptotic analysis for series related to the work of Hardy and Littlewood on Diophantine approximation, as well as Davenport. In particular, we expand on ideas from some previous work on arithmetic series and the RH.
Pairing-based cryptographic schemes require so-called pairing-friendly elliptic curves, which have special properties. The set of pairing-friendly elliptic curves that are generated by given polynomials form a complete family. Although a complete family with a $ρ$-value of 1 is the ideal case, there is only one such example that is known, this was given by Barreto and Naehrig. We prove that there are no ideal families with embedding degree 3, 4, or 6 and that many complete families with embedding degree 8 or 12 are nonideal, even if we chose noncyclotomic families.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, and let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F'$ such that $E$ has semistable reduction at every prime of $F'$ above $p$ and is supersingular at at least one prime above $p$. Under appropriate hypotheses, we compute the Akashi series of the signed Selmer groups of $E$ over a $\mathbb{Z}_p^d$-extension over a finite extension $F$ of $F'$. As a by-product, we also compute the Euler characteristics of these Selmer groups.
In this note we give an algorithm to explicitly construct the modular parametrization of an elliptic curve over the rationals given the Weierstrass function $\wp (z)$.
In this paper we show that a closed form formula for the generalized Clebsch-Gordan integral and the Fourier-Legendre expansion theory allow to evaluate hypergeometric series involving powers of the normalized central binomial coefficient ${\displaystyle \frac{1}{4^{n}}\dbinom{2n}{n}}$.
Generalizing math.AG/0003076 we express universal triple Massey products between line bundles on elliptic curves in terms of Hecke's indefinite theta series. We show that all Hecke's indefinite theta series arise in this way.
In this very short note, we show that there is a relation between the leading term at $s=1$ of an $L$-function of an elliptic curve defined over an number field and the term that follows.
The degenerate exponentials play an important role in recent study on degenerate versions of many special numbers and polynomials, the degenerate gamma function, the degenerate umbral calculus and the degenerate q-umbral calculus. The aim of this note is to consider infinite series whose terms involve truncated degenerate exponentials together with several special numbers and to find either their values or some other expressions of them as finite sums.
There are 3 examples in these notes. The first one is the standard example of the cubic resolvent of a quartic. The second example is exactly from Adelmann \cite{Adelmann} and gives a defining polynomial corresponding to the unique $S_4$-quotient of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z})$. The splitting field of the Adelmann polynomial over $\mathbb{Q}$ is a subfield of the 4-division field of an elliptic curve, that contains the 2-division field of the elliptic curve. The third example is new and needed in the study of the field theory of quaternion origami. Associated to an elliptic curve de…
We evaluate in closed form, for the first time, certain classes of double series, which are remindful of lattice sums. Elliptic functions, singular moduli, class invariants, and the Rogers--Ramanujan continued fraction play central roles in our evaluations
We prove the conjectural relations between Mahler measures and $L$-values of elliptic curves of conductors 20 and 24. We also present new hypergeometric expressions for $L$-values of CM elliptic curves of conductors 27 and 36. Furthermore, we prove a new functional equation for the Mahler measure of the polynomial family $(1+X)(1+Y)(X+Y)-αXY$, $α\in\mathbb R$.
This paper introduces the concept of necklace binomial coefficients motivated by the enumeration of a special type of sequences. Several properties of these coefficients are described, including a connection between their roots and an elliptic curve. Further links are given to a physical model from quantum mechanical supersymmetry as well as properties of alkane molecules in chemistry.
Elliptic modular graph functions and forms (eMGFs) are defined for arbitrary graphs as natural generalizations of modular graph functions and forms obtained by including the character of an Abelian group in their Kronecker--Eisenstein series. The simplest examples of eMGFs are given by the Green function for a massless scalar field on the torus and the Zagier single-valued elliptic polylogarithms. More complicated eMGFs are produced by the non-separating degeneration of a higher genus surface to a genus one surface with punctures. eMGFs may equivalently be represented by multiple integrals ove…
The universal elliptic KZB equation is the integrable connection on the pro-vector bundle over M_{1,2} whose fiber over the point corresponding to the elliptic curve E and a non-zero point x of E is the unipotent completion of π_1(E-{0},x). This was written down independently by Calaque, Enriquez and Etingof (arXiv:math/0702670), and by Levin and Racinet (arXiv:math/0703237). It generalizes the KZ-equation in genus 0. These notes are in four parts. The first two parts provide a detailed exposition of this connection (following Levin-Racinet); the third is a leisurely exploration of the connect…
The specializations of the motivic elliptic polylog are called motivic Eisenstein classes. For applications to special values of L-Functions, it is important to compute the realizations of these classes. In this paper, we prove that the syntomic realization of the motivic Eisenstein classes, restricted to the ordinary locus of the modular curve, may be expressed using p-adic Eisenstein-Kronecker series. These p-adic modular forms are defined using the two-variable p-adic measure with values in p-adic modular forms constructed by Katz.
Given a real elliptic curve $E$ with non-empty real part and $[D]\in \mbox{Pic}^2 E$ its $g_2^1$, we study the real inflection points of distinguished subseries of the complete real linear series $|\mathcal{L}_\mathbb{R}(kD)|$ for $k\geq 3$. We define {\it key polynomials} whose roots index the ($x$-coordinates of) inflection points of the linear series, away from the points where $E$ ramifies over $\mathbb{P}^1$. These fit into a recursive hierarchy, in the same way that division polynomials index torsion points. Our study is motivated by, and complements, an analysis of how inflectionary loc…
These informal notes are an expanded version of lectures on the moduli space of elliptic curves given at Zhejiang University in July, 2008. Their goal is to introduce and motivate basic concepts and constructions (such as orbifolds and stacks) important in the study of moduli spaces of curves and abelian varieties through the example of elliptic curves. The reason for working with elliptic curves is that most constructions are elementary and explicit in this case. All four approaches to moduli spaces of curves -- complex analytic, topological, algebro-geometric, and number theoretic -- are con…
