Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field K. Michael Larsen conjectured that for any finitely generated subgroup G of Gal(\bar K/K), the Mordell-Weil rank of E is unbounded in number fields fixed by G. We prove that the conjecture holds over K=Q for both the analytic rank and the p-infinity Selmer rank of E for every odd prime p. For arbitrary E/K, we show that Larsen's conjecture follows from the standard conjectures for ranks of elliptic curves, provided K has a real place or E has non-integral j-invariant.
In this note we study an analogy between a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over finite fields and a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over the rational number field. A question is posed of which an affirmative answer would imply the analogue of the Riemann hypothesis for elliptic curves over the rational number field.
We analyze log-algebraic power series identities for formal groups of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ which arise from modular parametrizations. We further investigate applications to special values of elliptic curve $L$-functions.
Consider elliptic curves $ E:\ y^{2} = x^{3} + D^{3} $ defined over the quadratic field $\ \Q(\sqrt{-3}) $. Hecke $ L-$series attached to $ E $ are studied, formulae for their values at $ s=1, $ and bound of 3-adic valuations of these values are given. These results are complementary to those in [Q] and [QZ], and are consistent with the predictions of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. It is described by a system of four equations with respect to six variables. The cuboid factor equations were derived from these four equations by symmetrization procedure. They constitute a system of eight polynomial equations, which has been solved parametrically. In the present paper its parametric solution is expressed through intersections or rational and elliptic curves arranged into parametric families.
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$ and let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $K$, defined either by an equation of the form $y^{2} = f(x)$ with degree $3$ or as the Jacobian of a curve defined by an equation of the form $y^{2} = f(x)$ with degree $4$. We obtain generators over $K$ of the $8$-division field $K(E[8])$ of $E$ given as formulas in terms of the roots of the polynomial $f$, and we explicitly describe the action of a particular automorphism in $\mathrm{Gal}(K(E[8]) / K)$.
In this note, we present a complete and corrected version of Kenku's method in the proof of the nonexistence of 27-torsion on elliptic curves over quadratic fields and show why this method can not be applied to the cases of 32- and 24-torsion on elliptic curves over cubic fields.
Conjecturally, the parity of the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve over a number field K is determined by its root number. The root number is a product of local root numbers, so the rank modulo 2 is conjecturally the sum over all places of K of a function of elliptic curves over local fields. This note shows that there can be no analogue for the rank modulo 3, 4 or 5, or for the rank itself. In fact, standard conjectures for elliptic curves imply that there is no analogue modulo n for any n>2, so this is purely a parity phenomenon.
In this note we give an algorithm to explicitly construct the modular parametrization of an elliptic curve over the rationals given the Weierstrass function $\wp (z)$.
In this very short note, we show that there is a relation between the leading term at $s=1$ of an $L$-function of an elliptic curve defined over an number field and the term that follows.
There are 3 examples in these notes. The first one is the standard example of the cubic resolvent of a quartic. The second example is exactly from Adelmann \cite{Adelmann} and gives a defining polynomial corresponding to the unique $S_4$-quotient of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z})$. The splitting field of the Adelmann polynomial over $\mathbb{Q}$ is a subfield of the 4-division field of an elliptic curve, that contains the 2-division field of the elliptic curve. The third example is new and needed in the study of the field theory of quaternion origami. Associated to an elliptic curve de…
In this short note, we shall construct a certain topological family which contains all elliptic curves over Q and, as an application, show that this family provides some geometric interpretations of the Hasse-Weil L-function of an elliptic curve over Q whose Mordell-Weil group is of rank $\leq1$.
We investigate a problem considered by Zagier and Elkies, of finding large integral points on elliptic curves. By writing down a generic polynomial solution and equating coefficients, we are led to suspect four extremal cases that still might have nondegenerate solutions. Each of these cases gives rise to a polynomial system of equations, the first being solved by Elkies in 1988 using the resultant methods of~\Macsyma, with there being a unique rational nondegenerate solution. For the second case we found that resultants and/or Gröbner bases were not very efficacious. Instead, at the suggestio…
This is an expository article, based on a lecture course given at CRM Barcelona in December 2009. The purpose of these notes is to prove, in a reasonably self-contained way, that finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group implies the parity conjecture for elliptic curves over number fields. Along the way, we review local and global root numbers of elliptic curves and their classification, and discuss some peculiar consequences of the parity conjecture.
14H52 : Elliptic curves Let E be the elliptic curve given by a Mordell equation y^2=x^3-A where A is an integer. For certain A, we use Stoll's formula to compute a lower bound for the proportion of square-free integers D up to X such that the Mordell-Weil rank of the quadratic twist by D is less than 2k, for given non-negative k. We also compute an upper bound for a certain average rank of quadratic twists of E.
For an elliptic curve A defined over a global function field K of characteristic p>0, the p-Selmer group of the Frobenius twist of A tends to have larger order than that of A. The aim of this note is to discuss this phenomenon.
Let K be a number field and E/K a modular elliptic curve, with modular parametrization $X_0(N) \to E$ defined over K. The purpose of this note is to study the images in E of classes of isogenous points in X_0(N).
In this note we consider questions about parametrisations of elliptic curves defined over number fields by quotients of the upper half-plane by finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). We ask if we can choose such a parametrisation of an elliptic curve to reflect the field over which it is defined: this can be viewed as a generalisation of the Shimura-Taniyama-Weil conjecture.
In this note, I study a comparison map between a motivic and étale cohomology group of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ just outside the range of Voevodsky's isomorphism theorem. I show that the property of an appropriate version of the map being an isomorphism is equivalent to certain arithmetical properties of the elliptic curve.
The diagonal subvariety on a product of two CM elliptic curves, is presented as an example of a dimension one subvariety, that is pre-periodic only if the respective projection on the product of two projective lines is also pre-periodic.
In this note, we will apply the results of Gross-Zagier, Gross-Kohnen-Zagier and their generalizations to give a short proof that the differences of singular moduli are not units. As a consequence, we obtain a result on isogenies between reductions of CM elliptic curves.
Pairing-based cryptographic schemes require so-called pairing-friendly elliptic curves, which have special properties. The set of pairing-friendly elliptic curves that are generated by given polynomials form a complete family. Although a complete family with a $ρ$-value of 1 is the ideal case, there is only one such example that is known, this was given by Barreto and Naehrig. We prove that there are no ideal families with embedding degree 3, 4, or 6 and that many complete families with embedding degree 8 or 12 are nonideal, even if we chose noncyclotomic families.
We propose some primality tests for 2^kn-1, where k, n in Z, k>= 2 and n odd. There are several tests depending on how big n is. These tests are proved using properties of elliptic curves. Essentially, the new primality tests are the elliptic curve version of the Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel primality test. Note:An anonymous referee suggested that Benedict H. Gross already proved the same result about a primality test for Mersenne primes using elliptic curve.
In this note we combine the advantages of the methods of Siegel-Baker-Coates and of Lang-Zagier for the computation of S-integral points on elliptic curves in Weierstrass normal form over the rationals. In this way we are able to overcome the absence of an explicit lower bound for linear forms in q-adic elliptic logarithms. We present an efficient algorithm for determining all S-integral points on such curves.
In this short note we show that the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields puts strong restrictions on the coordinates of rational points on elliptic curves. For the proof we use a variant of the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields formulated by Mochizuki. As an application, we generalize a result of Silverman on elliptic non-Wieferich primes.
In this note we extend the theory of twists of elliptic curves as presented in various standard texts for characteristic not equal to two or three to the remaining characteristics. For this, we make explicit use of the correspondence between the twists and the Galois cohomology set $H^1\big(\operatorname{G}_{\overline{K}/K}, \operatorname{Aut}_{\overline{K}}(E)\big)$. The results are illustrated by examples.
The universal elliptic KZB equation is the integrable connection on the pro-vector bundle over M_{1,2} whose fiber over the point corresponding to the elliptic curve E and a non-zero point x of E is the unipotent completion of π_1(E-{0},x). This was written down independently by Calaque, Enriquez and Etingof (arXiv:math/0702670), and by Levin and Racinet (arXiv:math/0703237). It generalizes the KZ-equation in genus 0. These notes are in four parts. The first two parts provide a detailed exposition of this connection (following Levin-Racinet); the third is a leisurely exploration of the connect…
In this note we investigate the $p$-degree function of elliptic curves over the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers. The $p$-degree measures the least complexity of a non-zero $p$-torsion point on an elliptic curve. We prove some properties of this function and compute it explicitly in some special cases.
These informal notes are an expanded version of lectures on the moduli space of elliptic curves given at Zhejiang University in July, 2008. Their goal is to introduce and motivate basic concepts and constructions (such as orbifolds and stacks) important in the study of moduli spaces of curves and abelian varieties through the example of elliptic curves. The reason for working with elliptic curves is that most constructions are elementary and explicit in this case. All four approaches to moduli spaces of curves -- complex analytic, topological, algebro-geometric, and number theoretic -- are con…
In this short note we prove a formula for local heights on elliptic curves over number fields in terms of intersection theory on a regular model over the ring of integers.
In this mostly expository note, we explain a proof of Tate's two conjectures [Tat65] for algebraic cycles of arbitrary codimension on certain products of elliptic curves and abelian surfaces over number fields.
In these short notes, we will show the following. Let F_q be a finite field and let E/\F_q be an elliptic curve. Let S_r be the rth summation/Semaev polynomial for E. Under an assumption, we show that it is NP-complete to check if S_r evaluates to zero on some input. Unconditionally, we prove a similar result for summation polynomials over singular curves. This suggests limitations in the usage of summation polynomials in for example algorithms to solve the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem. Assume that q is a power of 2. We show that the Weil descent to F_2 of S_3 for ordinary curves …
