In this short note we prove a formula for local heights on elliptic curves over number fields in terms of intersection theory on a regular model over the ring of integers.
We fix a counting function of multiplicities of algebraic points in a projective hypersurface over a number field, and take the sum over all algebraic points of bounded height and fixed degree. An upper bound for the sum with respect to this counting function will be given in terms of the degree of the hypersurface, the dimension of the singular locus, the upper bounds of height, and the degree of the field of definition.
In this paper, we consider a problem of counting multiplicities. We fix a counting function of multiplicity of rational points in a hypersurface of a projective space over a finite field, and we give an upper bound for the sum with respect to this counting function in terms of the degree of the hypersurface, the dimension and the cardinality of the finite field. This upper bound gives a description of the complexity of the singular locus of this hypersurface. In order to obtain this upper bound, we introduce a notion called intersection tree by intersection theory. We construct a sequence of i…
For several applications in the arithmetic of abelian varieties it is important to compute canonical heights. Following Faltings and Hriljac, we show how the canonical height on the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve can be computed using arithmetic intersection theory on a regular model of the curve in practice. In the case of hyperelliptic curves we present a complete algorithm that has been implemented in Magma. Several examples are computed and the behavior of the running time is discussed.
In this paper we use the connections between tropical algebraic geometry and rigid analytic geometry in order to prove two main results. We use tropical methods to prove a theorem about the Newton polygon for convergent power series in several variables: if f_1,...,f_n are n convergent power series in n variables with coefficients in a non-Archimedean field K, we give a formula for the valuations and multiplicities of the common zeros of f_1,...,f_n. We use rigid-analytic methods to show that stable complete intersections of tropical hypersurfaces compute algebraic multiplicities even when the…
Kudla has proposed a general program to relate arithmetic intersection multiplicities of special cycles on Shimura varieties to Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series. The lowest dimensional case, in which one intersects two codimension one cycles on the integral model of a Shimura curve, has been completed by Kudla-Rapoport-Yang. In the present paper we prove results in a higher dimensional setting. On the integral model of a Shimura surface we consider the intersection of a Shimura curve with a codimension two cycle of complex multiplication points, and relate the intersection to certain …
In this paper, we will explain a conceptual reformulation and inductive formula of the Siegel series. Using this, we will explain that both sides of the local intersection multiplicities of [GK93] and the Siegel series have the same inherent structures, beyond matching values. As an application, we will prove a new identity between the intersection number of two modular correspondences over Fp and the sum of the Fourier coefficients of the Siegel-Eisenstein series for Sp_4 of weight 2, which is independent of p (> 2). In addition, we will explain a description of the local intersection multipl…
We study families of varieties endowed with polarized canonical eigensystems of several maps, inducing canonical heights on the dominating variety as well as on the "good" fibers of the family. We show explicitely the dependence on the parameter for global and local canonical heights defined by Kawaguchi when the fibers change, extending previous works of J. Silverman and others. Finally, fixing an absolute value $v \in K$ and a variety $V/K$, we descript the Kawaguchi`s canonical local height $\hatλ_{V,E,\mathcal{Q},}(.,v)$ as an intersection number, provided that the polarized system $(V,\ma…
We describe a general algorithm for computing intersection pairings on arithmetic surfaces. We have implemented our algorithm for curves over $\mathbb Q$, and we show how to use it to compute regulators for a number of Jacobians of smooth plane quartics, and to numerically verify the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for the Jacobian of the split Cartan curve of level 13, up to squares.
In this paper, we prove an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors and arithmetic CM cycles in a Hilbert modular surface over $\mathbb Z$. As applications, we obtain the first `non-abelian' Chowla-Selberg formula, which is a special case of Colmez's conjecture; an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Humbert surfaces and CM cycles in the arithmetic Siegel modular variety of genus two; Lauter's conjecture about the denominators of CM values of Igusa invariants; and a result about bad reductions of CM genus two curves.
In 1996 as part of the development of arithmetic intersection theory and Arakelov theory, Zhang defined a "GIT height function" for semi-stable algebraic cycles in projective space. In the same work, Zhang conjectured that this height function was positive. We prove this conjecture for zero-cycles and hyperplane arrangements.
In this paper, we prove Hurwitz-Eichler type formulas for Hurwitz class numbers with each level $ M $ when the modular curve $ X_0(M) $ has genus zero. A key idea is to calculate intersection numbers of modular correspondences with the level in two different ways. A generalization of Atkin-Lehner involutions for $ Γ_0(M) $ and its subgroup $ Γ_0^{(M')}(M) $ is introduced to calculate intersection multiplicities of modular correspondences at cusps.
Let M be the Shimura variety associated with the group of spinor similitudes of a rational quadratic space over of signature (n,2). We prove a conjecture of Bruinier-Kudla-Yang, relating the arithmetic intersection multiplicities of special divisors and big CM points on M to the central derivatives of certain $L$-functions. As an application of this result, we prove an averaged version of Colmez's conjecture on the Faltings heights of CM abelian varieties.
We develop a theory of vector-valued heights and intersections defined relative to finitely generated extensions K/k. These generalize both number field and geometric heights. When k is Q or F_p, or when a non-isotriviality condition holds, we obtain Northcott-type results. We then prove a version of the Hodge Index Theorem for vector-valued intersections, and use it to prove a rigidity theorem for polarized dynamical systems over any field.
We show that the height of a variety over a finitely generated field of characteristic zero can be written as an integral of local heights over the set of places of the field. This allows us to apply our previous work on toric varieties and extend our combinatorial formulae for the height to compute some arithmetic intersection numbers of non toric arithmetic varieties over the rational numbers.
We study the intersections of special cycles on a unitary Shimura variety of signature (n-1,1), and show that the intersection multiplicities of these cycles agree with Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series. The results are new cases of conjectures of Kudla, and suggest a Gross-Zagier theorem for unitary Shimura varieties.
We present bounds for the degree and the height of the polynomials arising in some central problems in effective algebraic geometry including the implicitation of rational maps and the effective Nullstellensatz over a variety. Our treatment is based on arithmetic intersection theory in products of projective spaces and extends to the arithmetic setting constructions and results due to Jelonek. A key role is played by the notion of canonical mixed height of a multiprojective variety. We study this notion from the point of view of resultant theory and establish some of its basic properties, incl…
We prove a characteristic p analogue of a result of Massey which bounds the dimensions of the stalks of a perverse sheaf in terms of certain intersection multiplicities of the characteristic cycle of that sheaf. This uses the construction of the characteristic cycle of a perverse sheaf in characteristic p by Saito. We apply this to prove a conjecture of Shende and Tsimerman on the Betti numbers of the intersections of two translates of theta loci in a hyperelliptic Jacobian. This implies a function field analogue of the Michel-Venkatesh mixing conjecture about the equidistribution of CM points…
We give a close formula for the Néron-Tate height of tautological integral cycles on Jacobians of curves over number fields as well as a new lower bound for the arithmetic self-intersection number $\hatω^2$ of the dualizing sheaf of a curve in terms of Zhang's invariant $φ$. As an application, we obtain an effective Bogomolov-type result for the tautological cycles. We deduce these results from a more general combinatorial computation of arithmetic intersection numbers of adelic line bundles on higher self-products of curves, which are linear combinations of pullbacks of line bundles on the cu…
We prove height bounds concerning intersections of finitely generated subgroups in a torus with algebraic subvarieties, all varying in a pencil. This vastly extends the previously treated constant case and involves entirely different, and more delicate, techniques.
We compute an asymptotic expression for the Arakelov self-intersection number of the relative dualizing sheaf of Edixhoven's minimal regular model for the modular curve $X_0(p^2)$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. The computation of the self-intersection numbers are used to prove effective Bogolomov conjecture for the semi-stable models of modular curves $X_0(p^2)$ and obtain a bound on the stable Faltings height for those curves in a companion article arXiv:1802.06968.
We consider intersections of n diagonal forms of degrees k 1 < $\bullet$ $\bullet$ $\bullet$ < kn, and we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on these varieties. The proof uses the Hardy-Littlewood method and recent breakthroughs on the Vinogradov system. We also give a sharper result for one specific value of (k 1 ,. .. , kn), using a technique due to Wooley and an estimate on exponential sums derived from a recent approach in the van der Corput's method.
We compute intersection matrices for modular curves of the form $X_0(p^r)$ with $r \in \{3,4\}$ and as an application, we compute an asymptotic expression for the Arakelov self-intersection number of the relative dualizing sheaf of Edixhoven's minimal regular model for the modular curve $X_0(p^r)$ over $\qq$ with $r$ as above. This computation will be useful to understand an effective version of the Bogolomov conjecture for the stable models of modular curves $X_0(p^r)$ with $r \in \{3,4\}$ and obtain a bound on the stable Faltings height for those curves.
We extend the work of S. Zhang and Yuan-Zhang-Zhang to obtain a Gross-Zagier formula for modular forms of even weight in terms of an arithmetic intersection pairing of CM-cycles on Kuga-Sato varieties over Shimura curves. Combined with a result of the first author and de Vera-Piquero adapting Kolyvagin's method of Euler systems to this setting, we bound the associated Selmer and Tate-Shafarevich groups, assuming the non-vanishing of the derivative of the L-function at the central point.
It was shown by Faltings and Hriljac that the Néron-Tate height of a point on the Jacobian of a curve can be expressed as the self-intersection of a corresponding divisor on a regular model of the curve. We make this explicit and use it to give an algorithm for computing Néron-Tate heights on Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. To demonstrate the practicality of our algorithm, we illustrate it by computing Néron-Tate heights on Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus from 1 to 9.
We construct natural Green forms for special cycles in orthogonal and unitary Shimura varieties, in all codimensions, and, for compact Shimura varieties of type O(p,2) and U(p,1), we show that the resulting local archimedean height pairings are related to special values of derivatives of Siegel Eisentein series. A conjecture put forward by Kudla relates these derivatives to arithmetic intersections of special cycles, and our results settle the part of his conjecture involving local archimedean heights.
We prove some cases of the Zilber-Pink conjecture on unlikely intersections in Shimura varieties. Firstly, we prove that the Zilber-Pink conjecture holds for intersections between a curve and the union of the Hecke translates of a fixed special subvariety, conditional on arithmetic conjectures. Secondly, we prove the conjecture unconditionally for intersections between a curve and the union of Hecke correspondences on the moduli space of principally polarised abelian varieties, subject to some technical hypotheses. This generalises results of Habegger and Pila on the Zilber-Pink conjecture for…
