We consider intersections of n diagonal forms of degrees k 1 < $\bullet$ $\bullet$ $\bullet$ < kn, and we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on these varieties. The proof uses the Hardy-Littlewood method and recent breakthroughs on the Vinogradov system. We also give a sharper result for one specific value of (k 1 ,. .. , kn), using a technique due to Wooley and an estimate on exponential sums derived from a recent approach in the van der Corput's method.
This paper proves the Hasse principle and weak approximation for varieties defined by the smooth intersection of three quadratics in at least 19 variables, over arbitrary number fields.
Given a projective intersection of two quadrics X in at least 9 variables, the quantitative behaviour of the rational points on X is investigated under the assumption that X contains a pair of conjugate singular points defined over the Gaussians.
We searched up to height $10^7$ for rational points on diagonal quartic surfaces. The computations fill several gaps in earlier lists computed by Pinch, Swinnerton-Dyer, and Bright.
A Kloosterman refinement for function fields $K=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ is developed and used to establish the quantitative arithmetic of the set of rational points on a smooth complete intersection of two quadrics $X\subset \mathbb{P}^{n-1}_{K}$ , under the assumption that $q$ is odd and $n\geq 9$.
In this paper, we present an alternative proof of a finiteness theorem due to Bombieri, Masser and Zannier concerning intersections of a curve in the multiplicative group of dimension n with algebraic subgroups of dimension n-2. The proof uses a method introduced for the first time by Pila and Zannier to give an alternative proof of Manin-Mumford conjecture and a theorem to count points that satisfy a certain number of linear conditions with rational coefficients. This method has been largely used in many different problems in the context of "unlikely intersections".
In this note we construct several infinite families of diagonal quartic surfaces \begin{equation*} ax^4+by^4+cz^4+dw^4=0, \end{equation*} where $a,b,c,d\in\Z\setminus\{0\}$ with infinitely many rational points and satisfying the condition $abcd\neq \square$. In particular, we present an infinite family of diagonal quartic surfaces defined over $\Q$ with Picard number equal to one and possessing infinitely many rational points. Further, we present some sextic surfaces of type $ax^6+by^6+cz^6+dw^i=0$, $i=2$, $3$, or $6$, with infinitely many rational points.
In this paper we study the set of rational solutions of equations defined by power sums symmetric polynomials with coefficients in a finite field. We do this by means of applying a methodology which relies on the study of the geometry of the set of common zeros of symmetric polynomials over the algebraic closure of a finite field. We provide improved estimates and existence results of rational solutions to the following equations: deformed diagonal equations, generalized Markoff Hurwitz type equations and Carlitz's equations. We extend these techniques to a more general variants of diagonal eq…
A perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped with integer edges and integer face diagonals whose space diagonal is also integer. The existence of such cuboids is neither proved, nor disproved. A rational perfect cuboid is a natural companion of a perfect cuboid absolutely equivalent to the latter one. Its edges and face diagonals are rational numbers, while its space diagonal is equal to unity. Recently, based on a symmetry reduction, it was shown that edges of a rational perfect cuboid are roots of a certain cubic equation with rational coefficients depending on two rational parameters. F…
We prove a quantitative version of a result of Furstenberg and Deligne stating that the the diagonal of a multivariate algebraic power series with coefficients in a field of positive characteristic is algebraic. As a consequence, we obtain that for every prime $p$ the reduction modulo $p$ of the diagonal of a multivariate algebraic power series $f$ with integer coefficients is an algebraic power series of degree at most $p^{A}$ and height at most $A^2p^{A+1}$, where $A$ is an effective constant that only depends on the number of variables, the degree of $f$ and the height of $f$. This answers …
We give uniform upper bounds for the number of rational points of height at most $B$ on non-singular complete intersections of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^3$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. To do this, we combine determinant methods with descent arguments.
We study the rationality of the intersection points of certain lines and smooth plane quartics C defined over F_q. For q \geq 127, we prove the existence of a line such that the intersection points with C are all rational. Using another approach, we further prove the existence of a tangent line with the same property as soon as the characteristic of F_q is different from 2 and q \geq 66^2+1. Finally, we study the probability of the existence of a rational flex on C and exhibit a curious behavior when the characteristic of F_q is equal to 3.
Given a rational elliptic surface X over an algebraically closed field, we investigate whether a given natural number k can be the intersection number of two sections of X. If not, we say that k a gap number. We try to answer when gap numbers exist, how they are distributed and how to identify them. We use Mordell-Weil lattices as our main tool, which connects the investigation to the classical problem of representing integers by positive-definite quadratic forms.
A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. Its existence is equivalent to the existence of a perfect cuboid with all integer edges and diagonals. Finding such a cuboid or proving its non-existence is an old unsolved problem. Recently, based on a symmetry approach, the equations of a perfect cuboid were transformed to factor equations. The factor equations turned out to be solvable and, being solved, have led to a pair of inverse problems. Our efforts in the present paper are …
Let a,b,c,d be nonzero rational numbers whose product is a square, and let V be the diagonal quartic surface in PP^3 defined by ax^4+by^4+cz^4+dw^4=0. We prove that if V contains a rational point that does not lie on any of the 48 lines on V or on any of the coordinate planes, then the set of rational points on V is dense in both the Zariski topology and the real analytic topology.
A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. Finding such a cuboid is equivalent to finding a perfect cuboid with all integer edges and diagonals, which is an old unsolved problem. Recently, based on a symmetry approach, it was shown that edges and face diagonals of rational perfect cuboid are roots of two cubic equations whose coefficients depend on two rational parameters. Six special cases where these cubic equations are reducible have been already found. Two more possible c…
We consider a smooth system of two homogeneous quadratic equations over the rationals in at least 13 variables. In this case, the Hasse principle is known to hold, thanks to the work of Mordell in 1959. The only local obstruction is over the reals. In this paper, we give an explicit algorithm to decide whether a nonzero rational solution exists, and if so, to compute one.
In this paper we obtain cyclic pentagons and hexagons with rational sides, diagonals and area all of which are expressed in terms of rational functions of several arbitrary rational parameters. On suitable scaling, we obtain cyclic pentagons and hexagons whose sides, diagonals and area are all given by integers.
The problem to decide whether a given rational function in several variables is positive, in the sense that all its Taylor coefficients are positive, goes back to Szegő as well as Askey and Gasper, who inspired more recent work. It is well known that the diagonal coefficients of rational functions are $D$-finite. This note is motivated by the observation that, for several of the rational functions whose positivity has received special attention, the diagonal terms in fact have arithmetic significance and arise from differential equations that have modular parametrization. In each of these case…
We study the set of common F_q-rational zeros of systems of multivariate symmetric polynomials with coefficients in a finite field F_q. We establish certain properties on these polynomials which imply that the corresponding set of zeros over the algebraic closure of F_q is a complete intersection with "good" behavior at infinity, whose singular locus has a codimension at least two or three. These results are used to estimate the number of F_q-rational points of the corresponding complete intersections. Finally, we illustrate the interest of these estimates through their application to certain …
A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. It is described by a system of four equations with respect to six variables. The cuboid factor equations were derived from these four equations by symmetrization procedure. They constitute a system of eight polynomial equations, which has been solved parametrically. In the present paper its parametric solution is expressed through intersections or rational and elliptic curves arranged into parametric families.
We show that, if a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ bounds a positive definite smooth 4-manifold, then there are finitely many negative definite lattices, up to the stable-equivalence, which can be realized as the intersection form of a smooth 4-manifold bounded by $Y$. To this end, we make use of constraints on definite forms bounded by $Y$ induced from Donaldson's diagonalization theorem, and correction term invariants due to Frøyshov, and Ozsváth and Szabó. In particular, we prove that all spherical 3-manifolds satisfy such finiteness property.
This paper, motivated by problems in Diophantine analysis which can be formulated as problems of finding rational points on the intersection of two quadrics, presents an explicit construction of a rationally defined isomorphism (biregular mapping) between a rationally defined smooth intersection of two quadrics in projective three-space and an elliptic curve in Weierstrass form which maps a distinguished rational point to the point at infinity. The usual approach of transforming a smooth plane cubic to a curve in Weierstrass form by mapping an inflection point to the point at infinity in a par…
The problem of finding all possible extensions of a given rational diophantine quadruple to a rational diophantine quintuple is equivalent to the determination of the set of rational points on a certain curve of genus 5 that can be written as an intersection of three diagonal quadrics in $\mathbb P^4$. We discuss how one can (try to) determine the set of rational points on such a curve. We apply our approach to the original question in several cases. In particular, we show that Fermat's diophantine quadruple (1,3,8,120) can be extended to a rational diophantine quintuple in only one way, namel…
We consider asymptotics of power series coefficients of rational functions of the form $1/Q$ where $Q$ is a symmetric multilinear polynomial. We review a number of such cases from the literature, chiefly concerned either with positivity of coefficients or diagonal asymptotics. We then analyze coefficient asymptotics using ACSV (Analytic Combinatorics in Several Variables) methods. While ACSV sometimes requires considerable overhead and geometric computation, in the case of symmetric multilinear rational functions there are some reductions that streamline the analysis. Our results include diago…
Given a smooth subscheme of a projective space over a finite field, we compute the probability that its intersection with a fixed number of hypersurface sections of large degree is smooth of the expected dimension. This generalizes the case of a single hypersurface, due to Poonen. We use this result to give a probabilistic model for the number of rational points of such a complete intersection. A somewhat surprising corollary is that the number of rational points on a random smooth intersection of two surfaces in projective 3-space is strictly less than the number of points on the projective l…
In this paper we use the framework of automatic sequences to study combinatorial sequences modulo prime powers. Given a sequence whose generating function is the diagonal of a rational power series, we provide a method, based on work of Denef and Lipshitz, for computing a finite automaton for the sequence modulo $p^α$, for all but finitely many primes $p$. This method gives completely automatic proofs of known results, establishes a number of new theorems for well-known sequences, and allows us to resolve some conjectures regarding the Apéry numbers. We also give a second method, which applies…
We prove that, on a sufficiently general diagonal quartic surface, there is a non-trivial Brauer group but no Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of rational points.
We prove an explicit formula for the arithmetic intersection number of diagonal cycles on GSpin Rapoport-Zink spaces in the minuscule case. This is a local problem arising from the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for orthogonal Shimura varieties. Our formula can be viewed as an orthogonal counterpart of the arithmetic-geometric side of the arithmetic fundamental lemma proved by Rapoport-Terstiege-Zhang in the minuscule case.
In this article, we construct the Hitchin fibration for groups following the scheme outlined by Frenkel-Ngo in the case of SL_{2}. This construction uses as a decisive tool the Vinberg's semigroup. The total space of Hitchin is obtained by taking the fiber product of the Hecke stack with the diagonal of the stack of G-bundles $Bun_{G}$; we prove a transversality statement between the intersection complex of the Hecke stack and the diagonal of $Bun_{G}$, over a sufficiently big open subset, in order to get local applications, such that the fundamental lemma for the spherical Hecke algebra. Alon…
We show that the unresolved examples of Christol's conjecture $ \, _3F_{2}\left([2/9,5/9,8/9],[2/3,1],x\right)$ and $_3F_{2}\left([1/9,4/9,7/9],[1/3,1],x\right)$, are indeed diagonals of rational functions. We also show that other $\, _3F_2$ and $\, _4F_3$ unresolved examples of Christol's conjecture are diagonals of rational functions. Finally we give two arguments that show that it is likely that the $\, _3F_2([1/9, 4/9, 5/9], \, [1/3,1], \, 27 \cdot x)$ function is a diagonal of a rational function.
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on projective equivariant compactifications of $H\G$, where $H$ is a connected simple algebraic group embedded diagonally into $G := H^n$.
