We investigate a problem considered by Zagier and Elkies, of finding large integral points on elliptic curves. By writing down a generic polynomial solution and equating coefficients, we are led to suspect four extremal cases that still might have nondegenerate solutions. Each of these cases gives rise to a polynomial system of equations, the first being solved by Elkies in 1988 using the resultant methods of~\Macsyma, with there being a unique rational nondegenerate solution. For the second case we found that resultants and/or Gröbner bases were not very efficacious. Instead, at the suggestion of Elkies, we used multidimensional $p$-adic Newton iteration, and were able to find a nondegenerate solution, albeit over a quartic number field. Due to our methodology, we do not have much hope of proving that there are no other solutions. For the third case we found a solution in a nonic number field, but we were unable to make much progress with the fourth case. We make a few concluding comments and include an appendix from Elkies regarding his calculations and correspondence with Zagier.
In this note we study an analogy between a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over finite fields and a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over the rational number field. A question is posed of which an affirmative answer would imply the analogue of the Riemann hypothesis for elliptic curves over the rational number field.
We analyze log-algebraic power series identities for formal groups of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ which arise from modular parametrizations. We further investigate applications to special values of elliptic curve $L$-functions.
We describe iterated integrals as unipotent periods on families of marked elliptic curves in terms of multiple zeta values and elliptic multiple zeta values.
The Thue-Siegel method is used to obtain an upper bound for the number of primitive integral solutions to a family of quartic Thue's inequalities. This will provide an upper bound for the number of integer points on a family of elliptic curves with j-invariant equal to 1728.
In this note we combine the advantages of the methods of Siegel-Baker-Coates and of Lang-Zagier for the computation of S-integral points on elliptic curves in Weierstrass normal form over the rationals. In this way we are able to overcome the absence of an explicit lower bound for linear forms in q-adic elliptic logarithms. We present an efficient algorithm for determining all S-integral points on such curves.
We compute the critical $L$-values of some weight 3, 4, or 5 modular forms, by transforming them into integrals of the complete elliptic integral $K$. In doing so, we prove closed form formulas for some moments of $K'^3$. Many of our $L$-values can be expressed in terms of Gamma functions, and this also gives new lattice sum evaluations.
Under suitable, fairly weak hypotheses on an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ and a primitive non-trivial Dirichlet character $χ$, we show that the algebraic $L$-value $\mathscr{L}(E,χ)$ at $s=1$ is an algebraic integer. For instance, for semistable curves $\mathscr{L}(E,χ)$ is integral whenever $E$ admits no isogenies defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover we give examples illustrating that our hypotheses are necessary for integrality to hold.
We show that the average number of integral points on elliptic curves, counted modulo the natural involution on a punctured elliptic curve, is bounded from above by $2.1 \times 10^8$. To prove it, we design a descent map, whose prototype goes at least back to Mordell, which associates a pair of binary forms to an integral point on an elliptic curve. Other ingredients of the proof include the upper bounds for the number of solutions of a Thue equation by Evertse and Akhtari-Okazaki, and the estimation of the number of binary quartic forms by Bhargava-Shankar. Our method applies to $S$-integral …
We remark on pseudo-elliptic integrals and on exceptional function fields, namely function fields defined over an infinite base field but nonetheless containing non-trivial units. Our emphasis is on some elementary criteria that must be satisfied by a squarefree polynomial whose square root generates a quadratic function field with non-trivial unit. We detail the genus 1 case.
We describe a decomposition algorithm for elliptic multiple zeta values, which amounts to the construction of an injective map $ψ$ from the algebra of elliptic multiple zeta values to a space of iterated Eisenstein integrals. We give many examples of this decomposition, and conclude with a short discussion about the image of $ψ$. It turns out that the failure of surjectivity of $ψ$ is in some sense governed by period polynomials of modular forms.
Consider elliptic curves $ E:\ y^{2} = x^{3} + D^{3} $ defined over the quadratic field $\ \Q(\sqrt{-3}) $. Hecke $ L-$series attached to $ E $ are studied, formulae for their values at $ s=1, $ and bound of 3-adic valuations of these values are given. These results are complementary to those in [Q] and [QZ], and are consistent with the predictions of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
In this paper we construct parameterizations of elliptic curves over the rationals which have many consecutive integral multiples. Using these parameterizations, we perform searches in GMP and Magma to find curves with points of small height, curves with many integral multiples of a point, curves with high multiples of a point integral, and over two hundred curves with more than one hundred integral points. In addition, a novel and complete classification of "self-descriptive numbers" is constructed by bounding the number of zeros such a number must contain.
We construct isotrivial and non-isotrivial elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ with an arbitrarily large set of separable integral points. As an application of this construction, we prove that there are isotrivial log-general type varieties over $\mathbb_{F}_q(t)$ with a Zariski dense set of separable integral points. This provides a counterexample to a natural translation of the Lang-Vojta conjecture to the function field setting. We also show that our main result provides examples of elliptic curves with an explicit and arbitrarily large set of linearly independent points.
If $E$ is a minimal elliptic curve defined over $\ZZ$, we obtain a bound $C$, depending only on the global Tamagawa number of $E$, such that for any point $P\in E(\QQ)$, $nP$ is integral for at most one value of $n>C$. As a corollary, we show that if $E/\QQ$ is a fixed elliptic curve, then for all twists $E'$ of $E$ of sufficient height, and all torsion-free, rank-one subgroups $Γ\subseteq E'(\QQ)$, $Γ$ contains at most 6 integral points. Explicit computations for congruent number curves are included.
In this paper we prove the finiteness of the set of S-integral points of a punctured rational elliptic curve without complex multiplication using the Chabauty-Kim method. This extends previous results of Kim in the complex multiplication case. The key input of our approach is the use of modularity techniques to prove the vanishing of certain Selmer groups involved in the Chabauty-Kim method.
For an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a field $k\subset \mathbb C$, we study iterated path integrals of logarithmic differential forms on $E^\dagger$, the universal vectorial extension of $E$. These are generalizations of the classical periods and quasi-periods of $E$, and are closely related to multiple elliptic polylogarithms and elliptic multiple zeta values. Moreover, if $k$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb Q$, then these iterated integrals along paths between $k$-rational points are periods in the sense of Kontsevich--Zagier.
In this paper we shall investigate the problem of the representation of the number of integral points of an elliptic curve modulo a prime number p. We present a way of expressing an exponential sum which involves polynomials of third degree, in explicit non-exponential terms. In the process, we present explicit formulas for the calculation of some series involving the Riemann Zeta function.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field K. Michael Larsen conjectured that for any finitely generated subgroup G of Gal(\bar K/K), the Mordell-Weil rank of E is unbounded in number fields fixed by G. We prove that the conjecture holds over K=Q for both the analytic rank and the p-infinity Selmer rank of E for every odd prime p. For arbitrary E/K, we show that Larsen's conjecture follows from the standard conjectures for ranks of elliptic curves, provided K has a real place or E has non-integral j-invariant.
The aim of this paper is to show lifts from pairs of two elliptic modular forms to Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of even degree under the assumption that the constructed Siegel modular form is not identically zero. The key of the proof is to introduce a certain generalization of the Maass relation for Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of general degree.
We establish new upper bounds for the height of the S-integral points of an elliptic curve. This bound is explicitly given in terms of the set S of places of the number field K involved, but also in terms of the degree of K, as well as the rank, the regulator and the height of a basis of the Mordell-Weil group of the curve. The proof uses the elliptic analogue of Baker's method, based on lower bounds for linear forms in elliptic logarithms.
In this paper, we give a two dimensional analogue of the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula. By using this formula, we obtain an integral representation of Weil's elliptic functions which was introduced in the book "Elliptic functions according to Eisenstein and Kronecker".
We consider the moments of products of complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds. In particular, we derive new results using elementary means, aided by computer experimentation and a theorem of W. Zudilin. Diverse related evaluations, and two conjectures, are also given.
Pairing-based cryptographic schemes require so-called pairing-friendly elliptic curves, which have special properties. The set of pairing-friendly elliptic curves that are generated by given polynomials form a complete family. Although a complete family with a $ρ$-value of 1 is the ideal case, there is only one such example that is known, this was given by Barreto and Naehrig. We prove that there are no ideal families with embedding degree 3, 4, or 6 and that many complete families with embedding degree 8 or 12 are nonideal, even if we chose noncyclotomic families.
This paper, pursuing the work started in [10] and [11], holds six new formulae for π, see equations, through ratios of first kind elliptic integrals and some values of hypergeometric functions of three or four variables of Lauricella type. This will be accomplished by reducing some hyperelliptic integrals to elliptic by the methods taught by Legendre in his treatise. Eventually, evaluating some hyperelliptic integrals by means of hypergeometric Lauricella functions, we obtain some further evaluations of themselves in some particular points and also in their analytic continuation.
We prove that the number of rational points of bounded height on certain del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 defined over Q grows linearly, as predicted by Manin's conjecture. Along the way, we investigate the average number of integral points of small naive height on quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve with full rational 2-torsion.
The complete $p$-elliptic integrals are generalizations of the complete elliptic integrals by the generalized trigonometric function $\sin_pθ$ and its half-period $π_p$. It is shown, only for $p=4$, that the generalized $p$-elliptic integrals yield a computation formula of $π_p$ in terms of the arithmetic-geometric mean. This is a $π_p$-version of the celebrated formula of $π$, independently proved by Salamin and Brent in 1976.
In our PH.D. thesis we have showed that the Generalized Grothendieck's Conjecture of Periods applied to 1-motives, whose underlying semi-abelian variety is a product of elliptic curves and of tori, is equivalent to a transcendental conjecture involving elliptic integrals of the first and second kind, and logarithms of complex numbers. In this paper we investigate the Generalized Grothendieck's Conjecture of Periods in the case of 1-motives whose underlying semi-abelian variety is a non trivial extension of a product of elliptic curves by a torus. This will imply the introduction of elliptic in…
Generalized trigonometric functions are applied to the Legendre-Jacobi standard form of complete elliptic integrals, and a new form of the generalized complete elliptic integrals of the Borweins is presented. According to the form, it can be easily shown that these integrals have similar properties to the classical ones. In particular, it is possible to establish a computation formula of the generalized $π$ in terms of the arithmetic-geometric mean, in the classical way as the Gauss-Legendre algorithm for $π$ by Salamin and Brent. Moreover, an elementary new proof of Ramanujan's cubic transfor…
