Denote by B^k_{2,K} the locus of vector bundles of rank two and canonical determinant. We show that for a generic curve of genus g, B^k_{2,K} is non-empty if g is sufficiently large.
In this paper, we prove that the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula in Deligne cohomology computing the determinant of the cohomology of a holomorphic vector bundle on the fibers of a proper submersion between abstract complex manifolds is invariant by deformation of the bundle.
We propose a three-step program for the classification of stable rank 2 bundles on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$ inspired by an article by Hartshorne and Rao. While this classification program has been successfully completed for stable rank 2 bundles with even determinant and $c_2\le5$, much less is known for bundles with odd determinant. After revising the known facts about these objects, we list all possible spectra and minimal monads for stable rank 2 bundles with odd determinant and $c_2\le8$. We provide a full classification of all bundles with positive minimal monads, provide a neg…
We prove the Bertram-Feinberg-Mukai conjecture for a generic curve $C$ of genus $g$ and a semistable vector bundle $E$ of rank two and determinant $K$ on $C$, namely we prove the injectivity of the Petri-canonical map $S^2(H^0(E))\to H^0(S^2(E))$.
This paper establishes the correctness of a conjecture of Bertram-Feinberg and Mukai for a special class of globally generated rank-two bundles with canonical determinant over a generic Riemann surface of genus at least four.
Consider the scheme B_{2,L}^k of stable vector bundles of rank two and fixed determinant L which have at least k sections. Under suitable numerical conditions and for generic L, we show the existence of a component of the expected dimension of B_{2,L}^k.
For $C$ a stable curve of arithmetic genus $g\ge 2$, and $\mathcal{D}$ the determinant of cohomology line bundle on $\operatorname{Bun}_{\operatorname{SL}(r)}(C)$, we show the section ring for the pair $(\operatorname{Bun}_{\operatorname{SL}(r)}(C), \mathcal{D})$ is finitely generated. Three applications are given.
Let M be the moduli space of semistable rank 2 Higgs pairs (V,ϕ) with trivial determinant over a smooth projective curve X of genus g>1. We compute the stringy E-function of M and prove that there does not exist a symplectic desingularization of M for g>2.
In Comm. Math. Physics 118 (1988), 651-701, A. Beilinson and V. Schechtman define on the total space of a smooth family of curves a so-called trace complex associated to a vector bundle, the 0-th relative cohomology of which is the Atiyah algebra of the determinant bundle. Their proof reduces the general case to the acyclic one. In particular, one needs a comparison of the image of the trace complex for a bundle, and its twist by an étale multisection. We analyse this and correct a point in the original proof.
We develop a holomorphic equivalence between on one hand the space of pairs (stable bundle, flat connection on the bundle) and the "sheaf of holomorphic connections" (the sheaf of splittings of the one-jet sequence) for the determinant (Quillen) line bundle over the moduli space of vector bundles on a compact connected Riemann surface. This equivalence is shown to be holomorphically symplectic. The equivalences, both holomorphic and symplectic, seem to be quite general, in that they extend to other general families of holomorphic bundles and holomorphic connections, in particular those arising…
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve, defined over an algebraically closed field $k$, of genus at least three and $L$ a line bundle on $X$. Let ${\mathcal M}_X(r,L)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles on $X$ of rank $r$ and determinant $L$ with $r\geq 2$. We prove that the Brauer group ${\rm Br}(\mathcal{M}_X(r,L))$ is cyclic of order ${\rm g.c.d.}(r,{\rm degree}(L))$. We also prove that ${\rm Br}(\mathcal{M}_X(r,L))$ is generated by the class of the projective bundle obtained by restricting the universal projective bundle. These results were proved earlier in \cite{BBGN…
Let SU_X(3) be the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of rank 3 and trivial determinant on a curve X of genus 2. It maps onto P^8 and the map is a double cover branched over a sextic hypersurface called the Coble sextic. In the dual P^8 there is a unique cubic hypersurface, the Coble cubic, singular exactly along the abelian surface of degree 1 line bundles on X. We give a new proof that these two hypersurfaces are dual. As an immediate corollary, we derive a Torelli-type result.
Let $M$ be the moduli space of generalized parabolic bundles (GPBs) of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on a smooth curve $X$. Let $M_{\bar L}$ be the closure of its subset consisting of GPBs with fixed determinant ${\bar L}$. We define a moduli functor for which $M_{\bar L}$ is the coarse moduli scheme. Using the correspondence between GPBs on $X$ and torsion-free sheaves on a nodal curve $Y$ of which $X$ is a desingularization, we show that $M_{\bar L}$ can be regarded as the compactified moduli scheme of vector bundles on $Y$ with fixed determinant. We get a natural scheme structure on the closure o…
Let $Y$ be an integral nodal projective curve of arithmetic genus $g\ge 2$ with $m$ nodes defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ and $x$ a nonsingular closed point of $Y$. Let $n$ and $d$ be coprime integers with $n\ge 2$. Fix a line bundle $L$ of degree $d$ on $Y$. Let $U_Y(n,d,L)$ denote the (compactified) "fixed determinant moduli space". We prove that the restriction $\mathcal{U}_{L,x}$ of the Poincare bundle to $x \times U_Y(n,d,L)$ is stable with respect to the polarisation $θ_L$ and its restriction to $x \times U'_Y(n,d,L)$, where $U'_Y(n,d,L)$ is the moduli space of vector bund…
Let $X$ be any smooth simply connected projective surface. We consider some moduli space of pure sheaves of dimension one on $X$, i.e. $\mhu$ with $u=(0,L,χ(u)=0)$ and $L$ an effective line bundle on $X$, together with a series of determinant line bundles associated to $r[\mo_X]-n[\mo_{pt}]$ in Grothendieck group of $X$. Let $g_L$ denote the arithmetic genus of curves in the linear system $\ls$. For $g_L\leq2$, we give a upper bound of the dimensions of sections of these line bundles by restricting them to a generic projective line in $\ls$. Our result gives, together with Göttsche's computati…
Let $R$ be an excellent Henselian discrete valuation ring with algebraically closed residue field $k$ of any characteristic. Fix integers $r,d$ with $r\ge 2$. Let $X_R$ be a regular fibred surface over Spec($R$) with special fibre denoted $X_k$, a generalised tree-like curve of genus $g \ge 2$. Let ${L}_R$ be a line bundle on $X_R$ of degree $d$ such that the degree of the restriction of ${L}_R$ on the rational components of $X_k$ is a multiple of $r$. In this article we prove the existence of a rank $r$ locally free sheaf on $X_R$ of determinant ${L}_R$ such that it is semistable on the fibre…
Let $π:\CA\ra S$ be an abelian scheme over a scheme $S$ which is quasi-projective over an affine noetherian scheme and let $\CL$ be a symmetric, rigidified, relatively ample line bundle on $\CA$. We show that there is an isomorphism \det(π_*\CL)^{øtimes 24}\simeq\big(π_*ω_{\CA}^{\vee}\big)^{øtimes 12d} of line bundles on $S$, where $d$ is the rank of the (locally free) sheaf $π_*\CL$. We also show that the numbers 24 and $12d$ are sharp in the following sense: if $N>1$ is a common divisor of 12 and 24, then there are data as above such that \det(π_*\CL)^{øtimes (24/N)}\not\simeq\big(π_*ω_{\CA}…
Consider a projective manifold X and suppose that some wedge power of the cotangent bundle contains a subsheaf whose determinant bundle has maximal Kodaira dimension. Then we prove that X is of general type. More generally we compute the Kodaira dimension if the determinant bundle has sufficiently large Kodaira dimension. This is based on the study of the determinant bundle of a quotient of the cotangent bundle of a non-uniruled manifold: this bundle is always pseudo-effective. We apply this to study the universal cover of a projective manifold. Finally we prove the following: if the canonical…
Let $C/M$ be a local universal family of smooth curves and $S/M$ be the family of moduli spaces of stable bundles with a fixed determinant on curves. In this paper, we find locally free sheaves $\Cal G_E$, $S(\Cal G_E)$ on $X=C\times_M S$ such that their first direct images are isomorphic to sheaves $\Cal D^{\le 1}_{S/M}(Θ)$, $\Cal D^{\le 1}_S(Θ)$ of 1-st order differential operators on the theta line bundle over $S$. As an application, we give a new construction of Hitchin's projective connection (or KZ-connection). Our main results have clearly an extension to some stable singular curves. Th…
This is an expository article on the recent developments of Hodge theory on moduli spaces of smooth projective varieties with semi-ample canonical line bundles.
Abstract Let $\mathcal{SU}_{C}(r)$ be the moduli space of semi stable bundles with trivial determinant on a smooth curve $C$ of genus $g\geq 2$ on…
Let $X \rightarrow S$ be a smooth projective surjective morphism, where $X$ and $S$ are integral schemes over complex numbers. Let L_0, L_1, .... L_{n-1}, L_{n} be line bundles over $X$. There is a natural isomorphism of the Deligne pairing $<L_{0},...,L_{n}>$ with the determinant line bundle ${\rm Det}(\otimes_{i=0}^{n} (L_i- {\mathcal O}_{X}))$.
Let $M$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective variety equipped with an action of a compact Lie group $G$, and let $({\mathcal L},h)$ be a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, we construct a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle $(L\,,H)$ on $X\times M$ (the action of $G$ on $X$ is trivial), such that the corresponding Quillen determinant line bundle $({\mathcal Q}, h_Q)$, which is a $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$, is isomorphic to the given $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian lin…
We consider a canonical bundle formula for generically finite proper surjective morphisms and obtain subadjunction formulae for minimal log canonical centers of log canonical pairs. We also treat related topics and applications.
We constructed a projective moduli space of semistable torsion free sheaves with `fixed determinant' on a reducible curve. When a family of smooth curves degenerates to the reducible curve, our moduli space is a degeneration of the moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles with a fixed determinant on the smooth curves. Moreover, the moduli space is reduced and seminormal.
In this note we examine the question of expressing the determinant of the push forward of a symmetric line bundle on an abelian fibration in terms of the pull back of the relative dualizing sheaf via the zero section.
Let $C$ be a smooth irreducible complex projective curve of genus $g$ and let $B^k(2,K_C)$ be the Brill-Noether loci parametrizing classes of (semi)-stable vector bundles $E$ of rank two with canonical determinant over $C$ with $h^0(C,E)\geq k$. We show that $B^4(2,K_C)$ it has an irreducible component $\mathcal B$ of dimension $3g-13$ on a general curve $C$ of genus $g\geq 8$. Moreover, we show that for the general element $[E]$ of $\mathcal B$, $E$ fits in a exact sequence $0\to\mathcal O_C(D)\to E\to K_C(-D)\to 0$, with $D$ a general effective divisor of degree three, and the corresponding …
From a block-diagonal $(n+1) \times (m+1) \times (m+1)$ tensor symmetric in the last two entries one obtains two varieties: an intersection of symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces $X$ in $n$-dimensional projective space, and an intersection of quadrics $\mathfrak{C}$ in $m$-dimensional projective space. Under mild technical assumptions, we characterize the accidental singularities of $X$ in terms of $\mathfrak{C}$. We apply our methods to algebraic curves and show how to construct theta characteristics of certain canonical curves of genera 3, 4, and 5, generalizing a classical construction of…
We characterize property $(N_p)$ on a polarized surface $(X,L)$ with trivial canonical bundle in terms of the (non)existence of certain forbidden subvarieties of $X$.
Let $\mhu$ be the moduli space of semi-stable pure sheaves of class $u$ on a smooth complex projective surface $X$. We specify $u=(0,L,χ(u)=0),$ i.e. sheaves in $u$ are of dimension $1$. There is a natural morphism $π$ from the moduli space $\mhu$ to the linear system $\ls$. We study a series of determinant line bundles $\lcn$ on $\mhu$ via $π.$ Denote $g_L$ the arithmetic genus of curves in $\ls.$ For any $X$ and $g_L\leq0$, we compute the generating function $Z^r(t)=\sum_{n}h^0(\mhu,\lcn)t^n$. For $X$ being $\mathbb{P}^2$ or $\mathbb{P}(\mo_{\pone}\oplus\mo_{\pone}(-e))$ with $e=0,1$, we com…
If V is a bundle of Tate vector spaces over a base B, its determinantal gerbe has a class C_1(V) in the second cohomology group of the sheaf of invertible functions which can be seen as the Deligne cohomology H^3(B, Z(2)). An example of such a "Tate bundle" can be obtained from a finite rank vector bundle E on the product of B and a punctured formal disk. Our main result identifies the corresponding C_1(V) with the cohomological direct image of ch_2(E), the second Chern character of E. It can be seen as a "local" version of the Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck theorem for a family of curves. This the…
In this paper we prove that the anti-canonical bundle of a holomorphic foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a complex projective manifold cannot be nef and big if either $\mathcal{F}$ is regular, or $\mathcal{F}$ has a compact leaf. Then we address codimension one regular foliations whose anti-canonical bundle is nef with maximal Kodaira dimension.
Some divisor class relations are proved and used to compute the Cartier divisor class of the virtual canonical bundle for genus 0 maps to a smooth target.
Let $F\subseteq\mathbb{P}^3$ be a smooth determinantal quartic surface which is general in the Nöther-Lefschetz sense. In the present paper we give a complete classification of locally free sheaves $\mathcal{E}$ of rank $2$ on $F$ such that $h^1\big(F,\mathcal{E}(th)\big)=0$ for $t\in\mathbb{Z}$.
We investigate the deformations of pairs $(X,L)$, where $L$ is a line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$, defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic 0. In particular, we prove that the DG-Lie algebra controlling the deformations of the pair $(X,L)$ is homotopy abelian whenever $X$ has trivial canonical bundle, and so these deformations are unobstructed.
We compute the cohomology spaces for the tautological bundle tensor the determinant bundle on the punctual Hilbert scheme H of subschemes of length n of a smooth projective surface X. We show that for L and A invertible vector bundles on X, and w the canonical bundle of X, if $w^{-1}\otimes L$, $w^{-1}\otimes A$ and A are ample vector bundles, then the higher cohomology spaces on H of the tautological bundle associated to L tensor the determinant bundle associated to A vanish, and the space of global sections is computed in terms of $H^0(A)$ and $H^0(L\otimes A)$. This result is motivated by t…
We prove that the moduli of stable supercurves with punctures is a smooth proper DM stack and study an analog of the Mumford's isomorphism for its canonical line bundle.
We classify singular fibres of a projective Lagrangian fibration over codimension one points. As an application, we obtain a canonical bundle formula for a projective Lagrangian fibration over a smooth manifold.
We prove by degeneration to Prym-canonical binary curves that the first Gaussian map of the Prym canonical line bundle $ω_C \otimes A$ is surjective for the general point [C,A] of R_g if g >11, while it is injective if g < 12.
This article is an expanded version of the talk given by Ch. O. at the Second Latin Congress on "Symmetries in Geometry and Physics" in Curitiba, Brazil in December 2010. In this version we explain the topological and gauge-theoretical aspects of our paper "Abelian Yang-Mills theory on Real tori and Theta divisors of Klein surfaces".
We prove a canonical bundle formula for generically finite morphisms in the setting of generalized pairs (with $\mathbb{R}$-coefficients). This complements Filipazzi's canonical bundle formula for morphisms with connected fibres. It is then applied to obtain a subadjunction formula for log canonical centers of generalized pairs. As another application, we show that the image of an anti-nef log canonical generalized pair has the structure of a numerically trivial log canonical generalized pair. This readily implies a result of Chen--Zhang. Along the way we prove that the Shokurov type convex se…
We study fourfolds with trivial canonical bundle which are zero loci of sections of homogeneous, completely reducible bundles over ordinary and classical complex Grassmannians. We prove that the only HyperK{ä}hler fourfolds among them are the example of Beauville and Donagi, and the example of Debarre and Voisin. In doing so, we give a complete classification of those varieties. We include also the analogous classification for surfaces and threefolds.
We show that the second fundamental form of the Prym map lifts the second gaussian map of the Prym-canonical bundle. We prove, by degeneration to binary curves, that this gaussian map is surjective for the general point [C,A] of R_g for g > 19.
