Let $π:\CA\ra S$ be an abelian scheme over a scheme $S$ which is quasi-projective over an affine noetherian scheme and let $\CL$ be a symmetric, rigidified, relatively ample line bundle on $\CA$. We show that there is an isomorphism
\det(π_*\CL)^{øtimes 24}\simeq\big(π_*ω_{\CA}^{\vee}\big)^{øtimes 12d}
of line bundles on $S$, where $d$ is the rank of the (locally free) sheaf $π_*\CL$. We also show that the numbers 24 and $12d$ are sharp in the following sense: if $N>1$ is a common divisor of 12 and 24, then there are data as above such that
\det(π_*\CL)^{øtimes (24/N)}\not\simeq\big(π_*ω_{\CA}^{\vee}\big)^{øtimes (12d/N)}.
In this paper, we prove that the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula in Deligne cohomology computing the determinant of the cohomology of a holomorphic vector bundle on the fibers of a proper submersion between abstract complex manifolds is invariant by deformation of the bundle.
Denote by B^k_{2,K} the locus of vector bundles of rank two and canonical determinant. We show that for a generic curve of genus g, B^k_{2,K} is non-empty if g is sufficiently large.
We propose a three-step program for the classification of stable rank 2 bundles on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$ inspired by an article by Hartshorne and Rao. While this classification program has been successfully completed for stable rank 2 bundles with even determinant and $c_2\le5$, much less is known for bundles with odd determinant. After revising the known facts about these objects, we list all possible spectra and minimal monads for stable rank 2 bundles with odd determinant and $c_2\le8$. We provide a full classification of all bundles with positive minimal monads, provide a neg…
We prove the Bertram-Feinberg-Mukai conjecture for a generic curve $C$ of genus $g$ and a semistable vector bundle $E$ of rank two and determinant $K$ on $C$, namely we prove the injectivity of the Petri-canonical map $S^2(H^0(E))\to H^0(S^2(E))$.
This paper establishes the correctness of a conjecture of Bertram-Feinberg and Mukai for a special class of globally generated rank-two bundles with canonical determinant over a generic Riemann surface of genus at least four.
Consider the scheme B_{2,L}^k of stable vector bundles of rank two and fixed determinant L which have at least k sections. Under suitable numerical conditions and for generic L, we show the existence of a component of the expected dimension of B_{2,L}^k.
For $C$ a stable curve of arithmetic genus $g\ge 2$, and $\mathcal{D}$ the determinant of cohomology line bundle on $\operatorname{Bun}_{\operatorname{SL}(r)}(C)$, we show the section ring for the pair $(\operatorname{Bun}_{\operatorname{SL}(r)}(C), \mathcal{D})$ is finitely generated. Three applications are given.
Let M be the moduli space of semistable rank 2 Higgs pairs (V,ϕ) with trivial determinant over a smooth projective curve X of genus g>1. We compute the stringy E-function of M and prove that there does not exist a symplectic desingularization of M for g>2.
In Comm. Math. Physics 118 (1988), 651-701, A. Beilinson and V. Schechtman define on the total space of a smooth family of curves a so-called trace complex associated to a vector bundle, the 0-th relative cohomology of which is the Atiyah algebra of the determinant bundle. Their proof reduces the general case to the acyclic one. In particular, one needs a comparison of the image of the trace complex for a bundle, and its twist by an étale multisection. We analyse this and correct a point in the original proof.
We develop a holomorphic equivalence between on one hand the space of pairs (stable bundle, flat connection on the bundle) and the "sheaf of holomorphic connections" (the sheaf of splittings of the one-jet sequence) for the determinant (Quillen) line bundle over the moduli space of vector bundles on a compact connected Riemann surface. This equivalence is shown to be holomorphically symplectic. The equivalences, both holomorphic and symplectic, seem to be quite general, in that they extend to other general families of holomorphic bundles and holomorphic connections, in particular those arising…
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve, defined over an algebraically closed field $k$, of genus at least three and $L$ a line bundle on $X$. Let ${\mathcal M}_X(r,L)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles on $X$ of rank $r$ and determinant $L$ with $r\geq 2$. We prove that the Brauer group ${\rm Br}(\mathcal{M}_X(r,L))$ is cyclic of order ${\rm g.c.d.}(r,{\rm degree}(L))$. We also prove that ${\rm Br}(\mathcal{M}_X(r,L))$ is generated by the class of the projective bundle obtained by restricting the universal projective bundle. These results were proved earlier in \cite{BBGN…
Let SU_X(3) be the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of rank 3 and trivial determinant on a curve X of genus 2. It maps onto P^8 and the map is a double cover branched over a sextic hypersurface called the Coble sextic. In the dual P^8 there is a unique cubic hypersurface, the Coble cubic, singular exactly along the abelian surface of degree 1 line bundles on X. We give a new proof that these two hypersurfaces are dual. As an immediate corollary, we derive a Torelli-type result.
Let $M$ be the moduli space of generalized parabolic bundles (GPBs) of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on a smooth curve $X$. Let $M_{\bar L}$ be the closure of its subset consisting of GPBs with fixed determinant ${\bar L}$. We define a moduli functor for which $M_{\bar L}$ is the coarse moduli scheme. Using the correspondence between GPBs on $X$ and torsion-free sheaves on a nodal curve $Y$ of which $X$ is a desingularization, we show that $M_{\bar L}$ can be regarded as the compactified moduli scheme of vector bundles on $Y$ with fixed determinant. We get a natural scheme structure on the closure o…
Let $Y$ be an integral nodal projective curve of arithmetic genus $g\ge 2$ with $m$ nodes defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ and $x$ a nonsingular closed point of $Y$. Let $n$ and $d$ be coprime integers with $n\ge 2$. Fix a line bundle $L$ of degree $d$ on $Y$. Let $U_Y(n,d,L)$ denote the (compactified) "fixed determinant moduli space". We prove that the restriction $\mathcal{U}_{L,x}$ of the Poincare bundle to $x \times U_Y(n,d,L)$ is stable with respect to the polarisation $θ_L$ and its restriction to $x \times U'_Y(n,d,L)$, where $U'_Y(n,d,L)$ is the moduli space of vector bund…
Let $X$ be any smooth simply connected projective surface. We consider some moduli space of pure sheaves of dimension one on $X$, i.e. $\mhu$ with $u=(0,L,χ(u)=0)$ and $L$ an effective line bundle on $X$, together with a series of determinant line bundles associated to $r[\mo_X]-n[\mo_{pt}]$ in Grothendieck group of $X$. Let $g_L$ denote the arithmetic genus of curves in the linear system $\ls$. For $g_L\leq2$, we give a upper bound of the dimensions of sections of these line bundles by restricting them to a generic projective line in $\ls$. Our result gives, together with Göttsche's computati…
Let $R$ be an excellent Henselian discrete valuation ring with algebraically closed residue field $k$ of any characteristic. Fix integers $r,d$ with $r\ge 2$. Let $X_R$ be a regular fibred surface over Spec($R$) with special fibre denoted $X_k$, a generalised tree-like curve of genus $g \ge 2$. Let ${L}_R$ be a line bundle on $X_R$ of degree $d$ such that the degree of the restriction of ${L}_R$ on the rational components of $X_k$ is a multiple of $r$. In this article we prove the existence of a rank $r$ locally free sheaf on $X_R$ of determinant ${L}_R$ such that it is semistable on the fibre…
We study the bundles of generalized theta functions constructed from moduli spaces of sheaves over abelian surfaces. In degree 0, the splitting type of these bundles is expressed in terms of indecomposable semihomogeneous factors. Furthermore, Fourier-Mukai symmetries of the Verlinde bundles are found, consistently with strange duality. Along the way, a transformation formula for the theta bundles is derived, extending a theorem of Drezet-Narasimhan from curves to abelian surfaces.
Consider a projective manifold X and suppose that some wedge power of the cotangent bundle contains a subsheaf whose determinant bundle has maximal Kodaira dimension. Then we prove that X is of general type. More generally we compute the Kodaira dimension if the determinant bundle has sufficiently large Kodaira dimension. This is based on the study of the determinant bundle of a quotient of the cotangent bundle of a non-uniruled manifold: this bundle is always pseudo-effective. We apply this to study the universal cover of a projective manifold. Finally we prove the following: if the canonical…
We obtain characterizations and structure results for homogeneous principal bundles over abelian varieties, that generalize work of Miyanishi and Mukai on homogeneous vector bundles. For this, we rely on notions and methods of algebraic transformation groups, especially observable subgroups and anti-affine groups.
Let $C/M$ be a local universal family of smooth curves and $S/M$ be the family of moduli spaces of stable bundles with a fixed determinant on curves. In this paper, we find locally free sheaves $\Cal G_E$, $S(\Cal G_E)$ on $X=C\times_M S$ such that their first direct images are isomorphic to sheaves $\Cal D^{\le 1}_{S/M}(Θ)$, $\Cal D^{\le 1}_S(Θ)$ of 1-st order differential operators on the theta line bundle over $S$. As an application, we give a new construction of Hitchin's projective connection (or KZ-connection). Our main results have clearly an extension to some stable singular curves. Th…
The main result of this paper concerns the positivity of the Hodge bundles of abelian varieties over global function fields. As applications, we obtain some partial results on the Tate--Shafarevich group and the Tate conjecture of surfaces over finite fields.
We investigate the deformations of pairs $(X,L)$, where $L$ is a line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$, defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic 0. In particular, we prove that the DG-Lie algebra controlling the deformations of the pair $(X,L)$ is homotopy abelian whenever $X$ has trivial canonical bundle, and so these deformations are unobstructed.
We extend the so called Chen-Jiang decomposition for pushforward of pluricanocanical bundles to abelian varieties to the setting of klt pairs. We also provide a geometric application of this decomposition.
Abstract Let $\mathcal{SU}_{C}(r)$ be the moduli space of semi stable bundles with trivial determinant on a smooth curve $C$ of genus $g\geq 2$ on…
We study the Fourier-Mukai functor D(Y) -> D(X) induced by the universal family on a fine moduli space Y for simple semihomogeneous vector bundles on an abelian variety X. The main result is that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a very negative line bundle on Y is ample if and only if the bundles parametrized by Y are nef.
Let $X \rightarrow S$ be a smooth projective surjective morphism, where $X$ and $S$ are integral schemes over complex numbers. Let L_0, L_1, .... L_{n-1}, L_{n} be line bundles over $X$. There is a natural isomorphism of the Deligne pairing $<L_{0},...,L_{n}>$ with the determinant line bundle ${\rm Det}(\otimes_{i=0}^{n} (L_i- {\mathcal O}_{X}))$.
Let $M$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective variety equipped with an action of a compact Lie group $G$, and let $({\mathcal L},h)$ be a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, we construct a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle $(L\,,H)$ on $X\times M$ (the action of $G$ on $X$ is trivial), such that the corresponding Quillen determinant line bundle $({\mathcal Q}, h_Q)$, which is a $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$, is isomorphic to the given $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian lin…
We give examples of stable rank 2 vector bundles on principally polarized abelian threefolds, and study their deformations. The starting point is the Serre construction, which gives a source of examples, and which we rephrase in terms of Barth--Hulek like monads. Using the monad description, we compute the dimension of the space of first order infinitesimal deformations of these bundles. Moreover, we obtain a birational description of a 13-dimensional component of the moduli space for stable vector bundles.
We give upper and lower bounds for the order of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties.
We give upper and lower bounds for the order of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. We also give a generalization to higher genera of the famous formula $12 λ_1=δ$ for genus 1.
We constructed a projective moduli space of semistable torsion free sheaves with `fixed determinant' on a reducible curve. When a family of smooth curves degenerates to the reducible curve, our moduli space is a degeneration of the moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles with a fixed determinant on the smooth curves. Moreover, the moduli space is reduced and seminormal.
In this note we examine the question of expressing the determinant of the push forward of a symmetric line bundle on an abelian fibration in terms of the pull back of the relative dualizing sheaf via the zero section.
Let $C$ be a smooth irreducible complex projective curve of genus $g$ and let $B^k(2,K_C)$ be the Brill-Noether loci parametrizing classes of (semi)-stable vector bundles $E$ of rank two with canonical determinant over $C$ with $h^0(C,E)\geq k$. We show that $B^4(2,K_C)$ it has an irreducible component $\mathcal B$ of dimension $3g-13$ on a general curve $C$ of genus $g\geq 8$. Moreover, we show that for the general element $[E]$ of $\mathcal B$, $E$ fits in a exact sequence $0\to\mathcal O_C(D)\to E\to K_C(-D)\to 0$, with $D$ a general effective divisor of degree three, and the corresponding …
We calculate the parabolic Chern character of a bundle with locally abelian parabolic structure on a smooth strict normal crossings divisor, using the definition in terms of Deligne-Mumford stacks. We obtain explicit formulas for $ch_1$, $ch_2$ and $ch_3$, and verify that these correspond to the formulas given by Borne for $ch_1$ and Mochizuki for $ch_2$.
We consider those projective bundles (or Brauer-Severi varieties) over an abelian variety that are homogeneous, i.e., invariant under translation. We describe the structure of these bundles in terms of projective representations of commutative algebraic groups; the irreducible bundles correspond to Heisenberg groups and their standard representations. Our results extend those of Mukai on semi-homogeneous vector bundles, and yield a geometric view of the Brauer group of abelian varieties.
We classify principal bundles over anti-affine schemes with affine and commutative structural group. We show that this yields the classification of quasi-abelian varieties over a field k (i.e., group k-schemes with no non constant global functions). The interest of this result is given by the fact that the classification of smooth group k-schemes is reduced to the classification of quasi-abelian varieties and of certain affine group schemes.
We show birationality of the morphism associated to line bundles $L$ of type $(1,...,1,2,...,2,4,...,4)$ on a generic $g-$dimensional abelian variety into its complete linear system such that $h^0(L)=2^g$. When $g=3$, we describe the image of the abelian threefold and from the geometry of the moduli space $SU_C(2)$ in the linear system $|2θ_C|$, we obtain analogous results in $\p H^0(L)$.
We modify the standard perfect symmetric obstruction theory for moduli spaces of simple perfect complexes, to the situation of complexes on abelian threefolds with fixed determinant and Fourier-Mukai determinant. As outcome we attach nontrivial Donaldson-Thomas invariants to moduli spaces for complexes modulo twist and translation.
Let $\mhu$ be the moduli space of semi-stable pure sheaves of class $u$ on a smooth complex projective surface $X$. We specify $u=(0,L,χ(u)=0),$ i.e. sheaves in $u$ are of dimension $1$. There is a natural morphism $π$ from the moduli space $\mhu$ to the linear system $\ls$. We study a series of determinant line bundles $\lcn$ on $\mhu$ via $π.$ Denote $g_L$ the arithmetic genus of curves in $\ls.$ For any $X$ and $g_L\leq0$, we compute the generating function $Z^r(t)=\sum_{n}h^0(\mhu,\lcn)t^n$. For $X$ being $\mathbb{P}^2$ or $\mathbb{P}(\mo_{\pone}\oplus\mo_{\pone}(-e))$ with $e=0,1$, we com…
Let $W$ be a finite group and $T$ be an abelian group. Consider an extension $0 \ra T \ra N \ra W \ra 0$. For a smooth projective curve $X$, we give a precise description of the fiber of the quotient by $T$ map $q_T: \cM_X(N) \ra \cM_X(W)$ as a torsor over an abelian variety. We also prove a result on Mumford groups.
Let $F\subseteq\mathbb{P}^3$ be a smooth determinantal quartic surface which is general in the Nöther-Lefschetz sense. In the present paper we give a complete classification of locally free sheaves $\mathcal{E}$ of rank $2$ on $F$ such that $h^1\big(F,\mathcal{E}(th)\big)=0$ for $t\in\mathbb{Z}$.
We compute the cohomology spaces for the tautological bundle tensor the determinant bundle on the punctual Hilbert scheme H of subschemes of length n of a smooth projective surface X. We show that for L and A invertible vector bundles on X, and w the canonical bundle of X, if $w^{-1}\otimes L$, $w^{-1}\otimes A$ and A are ample vector bundles, then the higher cohomology spaces on H of the tautological bundle associated to L tensor the determinant bundle associated to A vanish, and the space of global sections is computed in terms of $H^0(A)$ and $H^0(L\otimes A)$. This result is motivated by t…
We give a generalization to higher genera of the famous formula $12 λ=δ$ for genus 1. We also compute the classes of certain strata in the Satake compactification as elements of the push down of the tautological ring.
It is well known that for an ample line bundle $L$ on an Abelian variety $A$, the linear system |2L| is base point free, and 3L is very ample, moreover the map defined by the linear system |2L| is well understood. In this paper we generalized this classical result and give a new proof using the theory CGG developed by Pareschi and Popa.
