Let $Y$ be an integral nodal projective curve of arithmetic genus $g\ge 2$ with $m$ nodes defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ and $x$ a nonsingular closed point of $Y$. Let $n$ and $d$ be coprime integers with $n\ge 2$. Fix a line bundle $L$ of degree $d$ on $Y$. Let $U_Y(n,d,L)$ denote the (compactified) "fixed determinant moduli space". We prove that the restriction $\mathcal{U}_{L,x}$ of the Poincare bundle to $x \times U_Y(n,d,L)$ is stable with respect to the polarisation $θ_L$ and its restriction to $x \times U'_Y(n,d,L)$, where $U'_Y(n,d,L)$ is the moduli space of vector bundles of rank $n$ and determinant $L$, is stable with respect to any polarisation. We show that the Poincaré bundle $\mathcal{U}_{L}$ on $Y \times U_Y(n,d,L)$ is stable with respect to the polarisation $a α+ b θ_L$ where $α$ is a fixed ample Cartier divisor on $Y$ and $a, b$ are positive integers.
Let $U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n$ with determinant $L$ where $L$ is a fixed line bundle of degree $d$ over a nodal curve $Y$. We prove that the projective Poincare bundle on $Y \times U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ and the projective Picard bundle on $U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ are stable for suitable polarisation. For a nonsingular point $x \in Y$, we show that the restriction of the projective Poincare bundle to $x \times U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ is stable for any polarisation. We prove that for arithmetic genus $g\ge 3$ and for $g=n=2, d$ odd, the Picard group of the moduli space $U'_L…
Let $M$ be the moduli space of generalized parabolic bundles (GPBs) of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on a smooth curve $X$. Let $M_{\bar L}$ be the closure of its subset consisting of GPBs with fixed determinant ${\bar L}$. We define a moduli functor for which $M_{\bar L}$ is the coarse moduli scheme. Using the correspondence between GPBs on $X$ and torsion-free sheaves on a nodal curve $Y$ of which $X$ is a desingularization, we show that $M_{\bar L}$ can be regarded as the compactified moduli scheme of vector bundles on $Y$ with fixed determinant. We get a natural scheme structure on the closure o…

In this article, we prove the Hodge conjecture for a desingularization of the moduli space of rank 2, semi-stable, torsion-free sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant over a very general irreducible nodal curve of genus at least 2. We also compute the algebraic Poincare polynomial of the associated cohomology ring.
We compute Betti numbers of both the components of the moduli space of rank 2 semi-stable torsion-free sheaves with fixed determinant over a reducible nodal curve with two smooth components intersecting at a node. We also compute the intersection Betti numbers of the moduli space.
We generalize Bertram's work on rank two vector bundles to an irreducible projective nodal curve C. We use extensions of a line bundle L by O_C and the associated `forgetful' map to study a compactification of the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of rank 2 and determinant L on C.
Let U^{'s}_{L}(n,d) be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n$ and fixed determinant L of degree d on a nodal curve Y. The moduli space of semistable vector bundles of rank n and degree $d$ will be denoted by U'_Y(n,d). We calculate the Brauer groups of U^{'s}_{L}(n,d)$. We study the question of rationality of $U^{'s}_{L}(n,d)$ and $U'_Y(n,d)$.
A conjecture of Mumford predicts a complete set of relations between the generators of the cohomology ring of the moduli space of rank 2 semi-stable sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant on a smooth, projective curve of genus at least 2. The conjecture was proven by Kirwan. In this article, we generalize the conjecture to the case when the underlying curve is irreducible, nodal. In fact, we show that these relations (in the nodal curve case) arise naturally as degeneration of the Mumford relations shown by Kirwan in the smooth curve case. As a byproduct, we compute the Hodge-Poincare polyn…
Given a compact Riemann surface $X$ and a moduli space $M_α(Λ)$ of parabolic stable bundles on it of fixed determinant of complete parabolic flags, we prove that the Poincaré parabolic bundle on $X\times M_α(Λ)$ is parabolic stable with respect to a natural polarization on $X\times M_α(Λ)$.
Let $M(2,\textbf{\underline{w}},χ)$ be the moduli space of rank $2$ torsion-free sheaves over a reducible nodal curve with each component having utmost two nodal singularities. We show that in each component of $M(2,\textbf{\underline{w}},χ)$, the closure of rank $2$ vector bundles with fixed determinant is rational.
We determine the Poincaré polynomial of the determinantal variety $\{\det = 0\}$ in the projective space associated with the monoid of $n\times n$ matrices.
Let $M$ denote the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n$ and fixed determinant of degree coprime to $n$ on a non-singular projective curve $X$ of genus $g \geq 2$. Denote by $\cU$ a universal bundle on $X \times M$. We show that, for $x,y \in X, x \neq y$, the restrictions $\cU|\{x\} \times M$ and $\cU|\{y\} \times M$ are stable and non-isomorphic when considered as bundles on $X$.
Newstead gave the generators of the cohomology ring of the moduli space of rank 2 semi-stable, torsion-free sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant over a smooth, projective curve. In this article, we generalize this result to the case when the underlying curve is irreducible, nodal. We show that these generators (of the cohomology ring in the nodal curve case) arise naturally as degeneration of Newstead's generators in the smooth curve case.
We prove that the normalized Poincaré bundle on the moduli space of stable rank $r$ vector bundles with a fixed determinant on a smooth projective curve $X$ induces a family of nef vector bundles on the moduli space. Two applications follow. We show that when the genus of $X$ is large, the derived category of $X$ is embedded into the derived category of the moduli space for arbitrary rank and coprime degree, which extends the results of Narasimhan, Fonarev-Kuznetsov, and Belmans-Mukhopadhyay. As the second application, we construct a family of ACM bundles on the moduli space. A key ingredient …
Let $\cMx$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n\geq 3$ and determinant $ξ$ over a connected Riemann surface $X$, with $n$ and $d(ξ)$ coprime. Let $D$ be a Calabi-Yau hypersurface of $\cMx$. Denote by $U_D$ the restriction of the universal bundle to $X\times D$. It is shown that the restriction $(U_D)_x$ to $x\times D$ is stable, for any $x\in X$. Furthermore, for a general curve the connected component of the moduli space of semistable sheaves over $D$, containing $(U_D)_x$, is isomorphic to $X$. It is also shown that $U_D$ is stable for any polarisation, and the connected c…
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve of genus $g\ge3$ defined over the complex numbers and let ${\mathcal M}_ξ$ denote the moduli space of stable vector bundles on $X$ of rank $n$ and determinant $ξ$, where $ξ$ is a fixed line bundle of degree $d$. If $n$ and $d$ have a common divisor, there is no universal vector bundle on $X\times {\mathcal M}_ξ$. We prove that there is a projective bundle on $X\times {\mathcal M}_ξ$ with the property that its restriction to $X\times\{E\}$ is isomorphic to $P(E)$ for all $E\in\mathcal{M}_ξ$ and that this bundle (called the projective Poincaré bu…
Let $C$ be a nonsingular projective curve of genus $g\ge2$ defined over the complex numbers, and let $M_ξ$ denote the moduli space of stable bundles of rank $n$ and determinant $ξ$ on $C$, where $ξ$ is a line bundle of degree $d$ on $C$ and $n$ and $d$ are coprime. It is shown that the universal bundle $\cu_ξ$ on $C\times M_ξ$ is stable with respect to any polarisation on $C\times M_ξ$. It is shown further that the connected component of the moduli space of $\cu_ξ$ containing $\cu_ξ$ is isomorphic to the Jacobian of $C$.
We compute the Picard group of the moduli space $U'$ of semistable vector bundles of rank $n$ and degree $d$ on an irreducible nodal curve $Y$ and show that $U'$ is locally factorial. We determine the canonical line bundles of $U'$ and $U'_L$, the subvariety consisting of vector bundles with a fixed determinant. For rank 2, we compute the Picard group of other strata in the compactification of $U'$.
Mumford and Newstead generalized the classical Torelli theorem to higher rank i.e., a smooth, projective curve $X$ is uniquely determined by the second intermediate Jacobian of the moduli space of stable rank $2$ bundles on $X$, with fixed odd degree determinant. In this article we prove the analogous result in the case $X$ is an irreducible nodal curve with one node. As a byproduct, we obtain the degeneration of the second intermediate Jacobians and the associated Néron model of a family of such moduli spaces.
We show that the Poincaré bundle gives a fully faithful embedding from the derived category of a curve of sufficiently high genus into the derived category of its moduli space of bundles of rank $r$ with fixed determinant of degree 1. Moreover we show that a twist of the embedding, together with 2 exceptional line bundles, gives the start of a semi-orthogonal decomposition. This generalises results of Narasimhan and Fonarev-Kuznetsov, who embedded the derived category of a single copy of the curve, for rank 2.
We show how one may sometimes perform singular ambient surgery on the complex locus of a real algebraic curve and obtain what we call a floppy curve. A floppy curve is a certain kind of singular surface in CP(2), more general than the complex locus of a real nodal curve. We derive analogs for floppy curves of known restrictions on real nodal curves. In particular we derive analogs of Fielder's congruence for certain nonsingular curves and Viro's inequalities for nodal curves which generalize those of Arnold and Petrovskii for nonsingular curves. We also obtain a determinant condition for certa…
We determine the possible even sets of nodes on sextic surfaces in $\Pn 3$, showing in particular that their cardinalities are exactly the numbers in the set $\{24, 32, 40, 56 \}$. We also show that all the possible cases admit an explicit description. The methods that we use are an interplay of coding theory and projective geometry on one hand, of homological and computer algebra on the other. We give a detailed geometric construction for the new case of an even set of 56 nodes, but the ultimate verification of existence relies on computer calculations. The construction gives a maximal family…
When $k<n$, we study the coherent systems that come from a BGN extension in which the quotient bundle is strictly semistable. In this case we describe a stratification of the moduli space of coherent systems. We also describe the strata as complements of determinantal varieties and we prove that these are irreducible and smooth. These descriptions allow us to compute the Hodge polynomials of this moduli space in some cases. In particular, we give explicit computations for the cases in which $(n,d,k)=(3,d,1)$ and $d$ is even, obtaining from them the usual Poincaré polynomials.
We explicitly describe the moduli space $M^s(X,3)$ of stable rank 2 parabolic bundles over an elliptic curve $X$ with trivial determinant bundle and 3 marked points. Specifically, we exhibit $M^s(X,3)$ as a blow-up of an embedded elliptic curve in $(\mathbb{CP}^1)^3$. The moduli space $M^s(X,3)$ can also be interpreted as the $SU(2)$ character variety of the 3-punctured torus. Our description of $M^s(X,3)$ reproduces the known Poincaré polynomial for this space.
We explore some of the interplay between Brill-Noether subvarieties of the moduli space SU_C(2,K) of rank 2 bundles with canonical determinant on a smooth projective curve and 2θdivisors, via the inclusion of the moduli space into |2θ|, singular along the Kummer variety. In particular we show that the moduli space contains all the trisecants of the Kummer and deduce that there are quadrisecant lines only if the curve is hyperelliptic; we show that for generic curves of genus <6, though no higher, bundles with >2 sections are cut out by Γ_00; and that for genus 4 this locus is precisely the Don…
We consider smooth moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles of fixed rank and determinant on a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus at least $3$. The choice of a Poincaré bundle for such a moduli space $M$ induces an isomorphism between $X$ and a component of the moduli space of semistable sheaves over $M$. We prove that $h^0(M, \text{End}({\mathcal E})\otimes TM)= 1$ for a vector bundle $\mathcal E$ on $M$ coming from this component. Furthermore, there are no nonzero integrable co-Higgs fields on $\mathcal E$.
Let $C \s \pr^2$ be an irreducible plane curve whose dual $C^* \s \pr^{2*}$ is an immersed curve which is neither a conic nor a nodal cubic. The main result states that the Poincaré group $π_1(\pr^2 \se C)$ contains a free group with two generators. If the geometric genus $g$ of $C$ is at least 2, then a subgroup of $G$ can be mapped epimorphically onto the fundamental group of the normalization of $C$, and the result follows. To handle the cases $g=0,1$, we construct universal families of immersed plane curves and their Picard bundles. This allows us to reduce the consideration to the case of…
Let $π_1:\mathcal{X} \to Δ$ be a flat family of smooth, projective curves of genus $g \ge 2$, degenerating to an irreducible nodal curve $X_0$ with exactly one node. Fix an invertible sheaf $\mathcal{L}$ on $\mathcal{X}$ of relative odd degree. Let $π_2:\mathcal{G}(2,\mathcal{L}) \to Δ$ be the relative Gieseker moduli space of rank $2$ semi-stable vector bundles with determinant $\mathcal{L}$ over $\mathcal{X}$. Since $π_2$ is smooth over $Δ^*$, there exists a canonical family $\widetildeρ_i:\mathbf{J}^i_{\mathcal{G}(2, \mathcal{L})_{Δ^*}} \to Δ^{*}$ of $i$-th intermediate Jacobians i.e., for …
