Newstead gave the generators of the cohomology ring of the moduli space of rank 2 semi-stable, torsion-free sheaves with fixed odd degree determinant over a smooth, projective curve. In this article, we generalize this result to the case when the underlying curve is irreducible, nodal. We show that these generators (of the cohomology ring in the nodal curve case) arise naturally as degeneration of Newstead's generators in the smooth curve case.
The authors learnt that similar results have been independently found by D.Zagier, V.Baranovsky and V.Balaji/A.King/P.Newstead. The corresponding references have been added (and some typos corrected).
We determine generators of the rational cohomology algebras of moduli spaces of parabolic vector bundles on a curve, under some `primality' conditions on the parabolic datum. These generators are canonical in a precise sense. Our results are new even for usual vector bundles (i.e., vector bundles without parabolic structure) whose rank is greater than 2 and is coprime to the degree; in this case, they are generalizations of a theorem of Newstead on the moduli of vector bundles of rank 2 and odd degree.
We study the ring generated by the Chern classes of tautological line bundles on the moduli space of parabolic bundles of arbitrary rank on a Riemann surface. We show the Poincaré duals to these Chern classes have simple geometric representatives. We use this construction to show that the ring generated by these Chern classes vanishes below the dimension of the moduli space, in analogy with the Newstead-Ramanan conjecture for stable bundles.
The moduli space of stable bundles of rank 2 and degree 1 on a Riemann surface has rational cohomology generated by the so-called universal classes. The work of Baranovsky, King-Newstead, Siebert-Tian and Zagier provided a complete set of relations between these classes, expressed in terms of a recursion in the genus. This paper accomplishes the same thing for the non-compact moduli spaces of Higgs bundles, in the sense of Hitchin and Simpson. There are many more independent relations than for stable bundles, but in a sense the answer is simpler, since the formulas are completely explicit, not…
We explore the structure of the cohomology ring of the moduli space of stable 1-dimensional sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$ of any degree. We obtain a minimal set of tautological generators, which implies an optimal generation result for both the cohomology and the Chow ring of the moduli space. Our approach is through a geometric study of tautological relations.
Let M be a moduli space of stable sheaves on a K3 or Abelian surface S. We express the class of the diagonal in the cartesian square of M in terms of the Chern classes of a universal sheaf. Consequently, we obtain generators of the cohomology ring of M. When S is a K3 and M is the Hilbert scheme of length n subschemes, this set of generators is sufficiently small in the sense that there aren't any relations among them in the stable cohomology ring. When S is the cotangent bundle of a Riemann surface, we recover the result of T. Hausel and M. Thaddeus: The cohomology ring of the moduli spaces o…
Let M be a smooth and compact moduli space of stable coherent sheaves on a projective surface S with an effective (or trivial) anti-canonical line bundle. We find generators for the cohomology ring of M, with integral coefficients. When S is simply connected and a universal sheaf E exists over SxM, then its class [E] admits a Kunneth decomposition as a class in the tensor product of the topological K-rings K(S) and K(M). The generators are the Chern classes of the Kunneth factors of [E] in K(M). The general case is similar
The moduli space of stable vector bundles on a Riemann surface is smooth when the rank and degree are coprime, and is diffeomorphic to the space of unitary connections of central constant curvature. A classic result of Newstead and Atiyah-Bott asserts that its rational cohomology ring is generated by the universal classes, that is, by the Kunneth components of the Chern classes of the universal bundle. This paper studies the larger, non-compact moduli space of Higgs bundles, as introduced by Hitchin and Simpson, with values in the canonical bundle K. This is diffeomorphic to the space of all c…
Using the methods developed in [LQW], math.AG/0009132, we obtain a second set of generators for the cohomology ring of the Hilbert scheme of points on an arbitrary smooth projective surface over the field of complex numbers. These generators have clear and simple geometric as well as algebraic descriptions.
The cohomology of the moduli spaces of stable bundles M(n,d), of coprime rank n and degree d, over a Riemann surface (of genus g > 1) have been intensely studied over the past three decades. We prove in this paper that the Pontryagin ring of M(n,d) vanishes in degrees above 2n(n-1)(g-1) and that this bound is strict (i.e. there exists a non-zero element of degree 2n(n-1)(g-1) in Pont(M(n,d)).) This result is a generalisation of a 1967 Newstead conjecture that Pont(M(2,1)) vanished above 4(g-1) (or equivalently that β^g =0.) These results have been independently proved by Lisa Jeffrey and Jonat…
We give an explicit presentation with generators and relations of the quantum cohomology ring of the blow-up of a projective space along a linear subspace.
The cohomology ring of the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles of rank n and degree d over a Riemann surface of genus g>1 has a standard set of generators when n and d are coprime. When n=2 the relations between these generators are well understood, and in particular a conjecture of Mumford, that a certain set of relations is a complete set, is known to be true. In this article generalisations are given of Mumford's relations to the cases when n>2 and also when the bundles are parabolic bundles, and these are shown to form complete sets of relations.
We show that the number of generators of the n-th cotangent cohomology group (n >=2) is the same for all rational surface singularities Y. For a large class of rational surface singularities, including quotient singularities, this number is also the dimension. For them we obtain an explicit formula for the corresponding Poincare series.
Let $GO(2n)$ be the general orthogonal group scheme (the group of orthogonal similitudes). In the topological category, Y. Holla and N. Nitsure determined the singular cohomology ring $H^*_{\rm sing}(BGO(2n,\mathbb C),\mathbb F_2)$ of the classifying space $BGO(2n,\mathbb C)$ of the corresponding complex Lie group $GO(2n,\mathbb C)$ in terms of explicit generators and relations. The author of the present note showed that over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to $2$, the smooth-étale cohomology ring $H_{\rm sm-ét}^*(BGO(2n),\mathbb F_2)$ of the classifying algebraic st…
Let GO(2n) be the general orthogonal group (the group of similitudes) over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to 2. We determine the etale cohomology ring with mod 2 coefficients of the algebraic stack BGO(2n). In the topological category, Y. Holla and N. Nitsure determined the singular cohomology ring of the classifying space BGO(2n) of the complex Lie group GO(2n) in terms of explicit generators and relations. We extend their results to the algebraic category. The chief ingredients in this are (i) an extension to etale cohomology of an idea of Totaro, originally used …
Let $L_1,\dots,L_s$ be line bundles on a smooth variety $X\subset \mathbb{P}^r$ and let $D_1,\dots,D_s$ be divisors on $X$ such that $D_i$ represents $L_i$. We give a probabilistic algorithm for computing the degree of intersections of polar classes which are in turn used for computing the Euler characteristic of linear combinations of $L_1,\dots,L_s$. The input consists of generators for the homogeneous ideals $I_X, I_{D_i} \subset \mathbb{C}[x_0,\ldots,x_r]$ defining $X$ and $D_i$.
We use group cohomology and the de Rham complex on simplicial manifolds to give explicit differential forms representing generators of the cohomology rings of moduli spaces of representations of fundamental groups of 2-manifolds. These generators are constructed using the de Rham representatives for the cohomology of classifying spaces $BK$ where $K$ is a compact Lie group; such representatives (universal characteristic classes) were found by Bott and Shulman. Thus our representatives for the generators of the cohomology of moduli spaces are given explicitly in terms of the Maurer-Cartan form.…
We describe the integral equivariant cohomology ring of a weighted projective space in terms of piecewise polynomials, and thence by generators and relations. We deduce that the ring is a perfect invariant, and prove a Chern class formula for weighted projective bundles.
Using vertex algebra techniques, we determine a set of generators for the cohomology ring of the Hilbert schemes of points on an arbitrary smooth projective surface over the field of complex numbers.
We find presentations by generators and relations for the equivariant quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian. For these presentations, we also find determinantal formulae for the equivariant quantum Schubert classes. To prove this, we use the theory of factorial Schur functions and a characterization of the equivariant quantum cohomology ring.
We determine the integral Chow and cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathcal{B}_{r,d}$ of rank $r$, degree $d$ vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$ bundles. We first show that the rational Chow ring $A_{\mathbb{Q}}^*(\mathcal{B}_{r,d})$ is a free $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra on $2r+1$ generators. The isomorphism class of this ring happens to be independent of $d$. Then, we prove that the integral Chow ring $A^*(\mathcal{B}_{r,d})$ is torsion-free and provide multiplicative generators for $A^*(\mathcal{B}_{r,d})$ as a subring of $A_{\mathbb{Q}}^*(\mathcal{B}_{r,d})$. From this description, we see that…
We prove an effective bound for the degrees of generators of the algebraic de Rham cohomology of smooth affine hypersurfaces. In particular, we show that the de Rham cohomology H_dR^p(X) of a smooth hypersurface X of degree d in C^n can be generated by differential forms of degree d^O(pn). This result is relevant for the algorithmic computation of the cohomology, but is also motivated by questions in the theory of ordinary differential equations related to the infinitesimal Hilbert 16th problem.
In this work we describe the Chen-Ruan cohomology of the moduli stacks of smooth and stable genus 2 pointed curves, and its algebraic counterpart: the stringy Chow ring. In the first half of the paper we compute the additive structure of the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring for the moduli stack of stable pointed genus 2 curves, describing it as a rationally graded vector space. In the second part we give generators for the even Chen--Ruan cohomology ring as an algebra on the ordinary cohomology.
Some projective wonderful models for the complement of a toric arrangement in a n-dimensional algebraic torus T were constructed in [3]. In this paper we describe their integer cohomology rings by generators and relations.
We determine an explicit presentation by generators and relations of the cohomology algebra $H^*(\mathbb P^2\setminus C,\mathbb C)$ of the complement to an algebraic curve $C$ in the complex projective plane $\mathbb P^2$, via the study of log-resolution logarithmic forms on $\mathbb P^2$. As a first consequence, we derive that $H^*(\mathbb P^2\setminus C,\mathbb C)$ depends only on the following finite pieces of data: the number of irreducible components of $C$ together with their degrees and genera, the number of local branches of each component at each singular point, and the intersection n…
We provide an explicit description of the Poincaré dual of each generator of the rational cohomology ring of the $SU(2)$ character variety for a genus $g$ surface with central extension -- equivalently, that of the moduli space of stable holomorphic bundles of rank 2 and odd degree.
We study the ideals of the rational cohomology ring of the Hilbert scheme X^{[n]} of n points on a smooth projective surface X. As an application, for a large class of smooth quasi-projective surfaces X, we show that every cup product structure constant of H^*(X^{[n]}) is independent of n; moreover, we obtain two sets of ring generators for the cohomology ring H^*(X^{[n]}). Similar results are established for the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology ring of the symmetric product. In particular, we prove a ring isomorphism between H^*(X^{[n]}, C) and H^*_{orb}(X^{[n]}/S_n, C) for a large class of smoo…
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve over the complex number field $\cnum$. We investigate the structure of the cohomology ring of the quot schemes $\Quot(r,n)$, i.e., the moduli scheme of the quotient sheaves of $\nbigo_C^{\oplus r}$ with length $n$. We obtain a filtration on $H^{\ast}(\Quot(r,n))$, whose associated graded ring has a quite simple structure. As a corollary, we obtain a small generator of the ring. We also obtain a precise combinatorial description of $H^{\ast}(\Quot(r,n))$ itself. For that purpose, we consider the complete filt schemes and we use a `splitting principle'. A com…
We show that the cohomology ring of a quiver Grassmannian asssociated with a rigid quiver representation has property (S): there is no odd cohomology and the cycle map is an isomorphism; moreover, its Chow ring admits explicit generators defined over any field. From this we deduce the polynomial point count property. By restricting the quiver to finite or affine type, we are able to show a much stronger assertion: namely, that a quiver Grassmannian associated to an indecomposable (not necessarily rigid) representation admits a cellular decomposition. As a corollary, we establish a cellular dec…
We investigate the cohomology rings of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties whose Hessenberg functions are of the form $h=(h(1),n\dots,n)$ in Lie type $A_{n-1}$. The main result of this paper gives an explicit presentation of the cohomology rings in terms of generators and their relations. Our presentation naturally specializes to Borel's presentation of the cohomology ring of the flag variety and it is compatible with the representation of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the cohomology constructed by J. Tymoczko. As a corollary, we also give an explicit presentation of the $\mathfr…
Let $n$ be a fixed positive integer and $h: \{1,2,...,n\} \rightarrow \{1,2,...,n\}$ a Hessenberg function. The main result of this manuscript is to give a systematic method for producing an explicit presentation by generators and relations of the equivariant and ordinary cohomology rings (with $\mathbb{Q}$ coefficients) of any regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mathrm{Hess}(h)$ in type A. Specifically, we give an explicit algorithm, depending only on the Hessenberg function $h$, which produces the $n$ defining relations $\{f_{h(j),j}\}_{j=1}^n$ in the equivariant cohomology ring. Our resu…
In this paper, we investigate certain graded-commutative rings which are related to the reciprocal plane compactification of the coordinate ring of a complement of a hyperplane arrangement. We give a presentation of these rings by generators and defining relations. This presentation was used by Holler and I. Kriz to calculate the $\mathbb{Z}$-graded coefficients of localizations of ordinary $RO((\mathbb{Z}/p)^n)$-graded equivariant cohomology at a given set of representation spheres, and also more recently by the author in a generalization to the case of an arbitrary finite group. We also give…
Let $\MS_g$ be the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles of rank 2 and fixed determinant of odd degree over a smooth complex projective curve of genus $g$. This paper proves various properties of the rational cohomology ring $H^*(\MS_g)$. It is shown that the first relation in genus $g$ between the standard generators satisfies a recurrence relation in $g$ and that the invariant subring for the mapping class group is a complete intersection ring. (These two results have been obtained independently by Zagier, Baranovsky and Siebert & Tian.) A Gröbner basis is found for the ideal of …
Laumon moduli spaces are certain smooth closures of the moduli spaces of maps from the projective line to the flag variety of $GL_n$. We construct the action of the Yangian of $sl_n$ in the cohomology of Laumon spaces by certain natural correspondences. We construct the action of the affine Yangian (two-parametric deformation of the universal enveloping algebra of the universal central extension of $sl_n[s^{\pm1},t]$) in the cohomology of the affine version of Laumon spaces. We compute the matrix coefficients of the generators of the affine Yangian in the fixed point basis of cohomology. This …
Let $n$ be a fixed positive integer and $h: \{1,2,\ldots,n\} \rightarrow \{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ a Hessenberg function. The main results of this paper are twofold. First, we give a systematic method, depending in a simple manner on the Hessenberg function $h$, for producing an explicit presentation by generators and relations of the cohomology ring $H^\ast(Hess(\mathsf{N},h))$ with $\mathbb{Q}$ coefficients of the corresponding regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $Hess(\mathsf{N},h)$. Our result generalizes known results in special cases such as the Peterson variety and also allows us to answer a q…
We determine explicit generators for a cohomology group constructed from a solution of a fuchsian linear differential equation and describe its relation with cohomology groups with coefficients in a local system. In the parameterized case, this yields into an algorithm which computes new fuchsian differential equations from those depending on multi-parameters. This generalizes the classical convolution of solutions of fuchsian differential equations.
