We constructed a projective moduli space of semistable torsion free sheaves with `fixed determinant' on a reducible curve. When a family of smooth curves degenerates to the reducible curve, our moduli space is a degeneration of the moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles with a fixed determinant on the smooth curves. Moreover, the moduli space is reduced and seminormal.
In this paper we study some properties of degenerations of surfaces whose general fibre is a smooth projective surface and whose central fibre is a reduced, connected surface $X \subset IP^r$, $r \geq 3$, which is assumed to be a union of smooth projective surfaces, in particular of planes. Our original motivation has been a series of papers of G. Zappa which appeared in the 1940-50's regarding degenerations of scrolls to unions of planes. Here, we present a first set of results on the subject; other aspects are still work in progress and will appear later. We first study the geometry and the …
In this paper we consider a reducible degeneration of a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$. Using the Sato Grassmannian we show that the limits of hyperelliptic solutions of the KP-hierarchy exist and become soliton solutions of various types. We recover some results of Abenda who studied regular soliton solutions corresponding to a reducible rational curve obtained as a degeneration of a hyperelliptic curve. We study singular soliton solutions as well and clarify how the singularity structure of solutions is reflected in the matrices which determine soliton solutions.
Let C be a curve of genus g and L a line bundle of degree 2g on C . Let M be the kernel of the evaluation map from the trivial bundle with fibre H^0(C,L) into L . We show that when L is general enough, the rank g bundle M and its exterior powers are stable and admit a reducible theta divisor.
We observe that if we are interested primarily in degeneration arguments, there is a weaker notion of (semi)stability for vector bundles on reducible curves, which is sufficient for many applications, and does not depend on a choice of polarization. We introduce and explore the basic properties of this alternate notion of (semi)stability. In a complementary direction, we record a proof of the existence of semistable extensions of vector bundles in suitable degenerations.
Bolibruch's examples of representations of pi_1(P^1-finitely many points) which are not realizable by Fuchsian differential systems are adapted to curves of higher genus.
In this paper we give a survey about the classification of vector bundles and torsion free sheaves on degenerations of elliptic curves. Coherent sheaves on singular curves of arithmetic genus one can be studied using the technique of matrix problems or via Fourier-Mukai transforms, both methods are discussed here. Moreover, we include new proofs of some classical results about vector bundles on elliptic curves.
Studying degenerations of moduli spaces of semistable principal bundles on smooth curves leads to the problem of constructing and studying moduli spaces on singular curves. In this note, we will see that the moduli spaces of $δ$-semistable pseudo bundles on a nodal curve constructed by the first author become, for large values of $δ$, the moduli spaces for semistable singular principal bundles. The latter are reasonable candidates for degenerations and a potential basis of further developments as on irreducible nodal curves. In particular, we find a notion of semistability for principal bundle…
We study rational curves on general Fano hypersurfaces in projective space, mostly by degenerating the hypersurface along with its ambient projective space to reducible varieties. We prove results on existence of low-degree rational curves with balanced normal bundle, and reprove some results on irreducibility of spaces of rational curves of low degree.
In a recent paper \cite{3}, a semi-stable degeneration of moduli space of Higgs bundles on a curve has been constructed. In this paper, we show that there is a relative log-symplectic form on this degeneration, whose restriction to the generic fibre is the classical symplectic form discovered by Hitchin. We compute the Poisson ranks at every point and describe the symplectic foliation on the closed fibre. We also show that the closed fibre, which is a variety with normal crossing singularities, acquires a structure of an algebraically completely integrable system.
Let $Q^*$ denote the dual of the quotient bundle on the Grassmannian $G(2,n)$. We prove that the ideal of $Q^*$ in its natural embedding has initial ideal equal to the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a certain unobstructed simplicial complex. Furthermore, we show that the coordinate ring of $Q^*$ has no infinitesimal deformations for $n>5$.
Over a family $\mathbb X$ of genus $g$ complete curves, which gives the degeneration of a smooth curve into one with nodal singularities, we build a moduli space which is the moduli space of ${\rm SL}(n, \mathbb C)$ bundles over the generic smooth curve $X_t$ in the family, and is a moduli space of bundles equipped with extra structure at the nodes for the nodal curves in the family. This moduli space is a quotient by $(\mathbb C^*)^s$ of a moduli space on the desingularisation. Taking a "maximal" degeneration of the curve into a nodal curve built from the glueing of three-pointed spheres, we …
Let $Y_{1},\dots,Y_{l}$ be smooth irreducible projective curves and let $Y$ be its disjoint union. Given a semisimple reductive algebraic group $G$ and a faithful representation $ρ:G\hookrightarrow \textrm{SL}(V)$ we construct a projective moduli space of $(\underlineκ,δ)$-(semi)stable singular principal $G$-bundles with generalized parabolic structure of type $\underline{e}$. In case $Y$ is the normalization of a connected and reducible projective nodal curve $X$, there is a closed subscheme coarsely representing the subfunctor corresponding to descending bundles. We prove that the descent op…
A recent construction of Hacking relates the classification of stable vector bundles on a surface of general type with $p_g = 0$ and the boundary of the moduli space of deformations of the surface. In the present paper we analyze this relation for Godeaux surfaces. We provide a description of certain boundary components of the moduli space of Godeaux surfaces. Also we explicitly construct certain exceptional vector bundles of rank 2 on Godeaux surfaces, stable with respect to the canonical class, and examine the correspondence between the boundary components and such exceptional vector bundles…
A generic strictly semistable bundle of degree zero over a curve X has a reducible theta divisor, given by the sum of the theta divisors of the stable summands of the associated graded bundle. The converse is not true: Beauville and Raynaud have each constructed stable bundles with reducible theta divisors. For X of genus at least 5, we construct stable vector bundles over X of rank $r$ for all $r \geq 5$, with reducible and nonreduced theta divisors. We also adapt the construction to symplectic bundles. In the appendix, Raynaud's original example of a stable rank 2 vector bundle with reducibl…
Let $C$ be a curve with two smooth components and a single node. Let $\mathcal{U}_C(r,w,χ)$ be the moduli space of $w$-semistable classes of depth one sheaves on $C$ having rank $r$ on both components and Euler characteristic $χ$. In this paper, under suitable assumptions, we produce a projective bundle over the product of the moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles of rank $r$ on each components and we show that it is birational to an irreducible component of $\mathcal{U}_C(r,w,χ)$. Then we prove the rationality of the closed subset containing vector bundles with given fixed determinant.
In 1981 J. Wahl described smoothings of surface quotient singularities with no vanishing cycles. Given a smoothing of a projective surface X of this type, we construct an associated exceptional vector bundle on the nearby fiber Y in the case H^{2,0}(Y)=H^1(Y)=0. If Y is the projective plane we show that our construction establishes a bijective correspondence between the possible degenerate surfaces X and exceptional bundles on Y modulo dualizing and tensoring by line bundles. If Y is of general type then our construction establishes a connection between components of the boundary of the moduli…
The new compactification of moduli scheme of Gieseker-stable vector bundles with the given Hilbert polynomial on a smooth projective polarized surface (S;H), over the field k = \bar k of zero characteristic, is constructed in previous papers of the author. Families of locally free sheaves on the surface S are completed by the locally free sheaves on the schemes which are certain modifications of S. We obtain the class of modified surfaces to appear in the construction. Keywords: moduli space, semistable coherent sheaves, blowup algebra, algebraic surface.
Over a family of varieties with singular special fiber, the relative Picard functor (i.e. the moduli space of line bundles) may fail to be compact. We propose a stability condition for line bundles on reducible varieties that is aimed at compactifying it. This stability condition generalizes the notion of `balanced multidegree' used by Caporaso in compactifying the relative Picard functor over families of curves. Unlike the latter, it is defined `asymptotically'; an important theme of this paper is that although line bundles on higher-dimensional varieties are more complicated than those on cu…
We study the real loci of toric degenerations of complex varieties with reducible central fibre. We show that the topology of such degenerations can be explicitly described via the Kato-Nakayama space of the central fibre as a log space. We furthermore provide generalities of real structures in log geometry and their lift to Kato-Nakayama spaces. A key point of this paper is a description of the Kato-Nakayama space of a toric degeneration and its real locus, both as bundles determined by combinatorial data. We provide several examples including real toric degenerations of K3-surfaces and a tor…
Let $C$ be a smooth complex irreducible projective curve of genus $g$ with general moduli, and let $(L,H^0(L))$ be a generated complete linear series of type $(d,r+1)$ over $C$. The syzygy bundle, denoted by $M_L$, is the kernel of the evaluation map $H^0(L)\otimes\mathcal O_C\to L$. In this work we have a double purpose. The first one is to give new examples of stable syzygy bundles admitting theta divisor over general curves. We prove that if $M_L$ is strictly semistable then $M_L$ admits reducible theta divisor. The second purpose is to study the cohomological semistability of $M_L$, and in…
For a semi simple group G it is known the moduli stack of principal G-bundles over a fixed nodal curve is not complete. Finding a completion requires compactifying the group G. However it was shown in [34] that this is not sufficient to complete the moduli stack over a family of curves. In this paper I describe how to use an embedding of the loop group LG to provide a completion of the stack of G-bundles over a one dimensional family of curves degenerating to a nodal curve. The completion comes with a modular interpretation inspired by the work of Gieseker, Seshadri, Kausz and Thaddeus and Mar…
Given a generically smooth stable curve over a discrete valuation ring such that its special fibre is irreducible with one double point, we construct a moduli stack over that descrete valuation ring which is a model for the moduli stack of vector bundles over the generic fibre of the curve. The model has the following nice properties: 1. It is regular. 2. Its special fibre is a normal crossing divisor. 3. The normalization of its special fibre is a locally trivial KGl-bundle over the moduli stack of vector bundles over the normalization of the special fibre of the curve. Here KGl is a canonica…
Results due to Druel and Beauville show that the blowup of the intermediate Jacobian of a smooth cubic threefold X in the Fano surface of lines can be identified with a moduli space of semistable sheaves of Chern classes c_1=0, c_2=2, c_3=0 on X. Here we further identify this space with a space of matrix factorizations. This has the advantage that this description naturally generalizes to singular and even reducible cubic threefolds. In this way, given a degeneration of X to a reducible cubic threefold X_0, we obtain an associated degeneration of the above moduli spaces of semistable sheaves.
Given a vector bundle $E$ on a complex reduced curve $C$ and a subspace $V$ of $H^0(E)$ which generates $E$, one can consider the kernel of the evaluation map $ev_V:V\otimes \mathcal{O}_C\to E$, i.e. the {\it kernel bundle } $M_{E,V}$ associated to the pair $(E,V)$. Motivated by a well known conjecture of Butler about the semistability of $M_{E,V}$ and by the results obtained by several authors when the ambient space is a smooth curve, we investigate the case of a curve with one node. Unexpectedly, we are able to prove results which goes in the opposite direction with respect to what is known …
We develop a formula (Theorem 5.1) which allows to compute top Chern classes of vector bundles on the vanishing locus $V(s)$ of a section of this bundle. This formula particularly applies in the case when $V(s)$ is the union of locally complete intersections giving the individual contribution of each component and their mutual intersections. We conclude with applications to the enumeration of rational curves in complete intersections in projective space.
In 1957 Atiyah classified simple and indecomposable vector bundles on an elliptic curve. In this article we generalize his classification by describing the simple vector bundles on all reduced plane cubic curves. Our main result states that a simple vector bundle on such a curve is completely determined by its rank, multidegree and determinant. Our approach, based on the representation theory of boxes, also yields an explicit description of the corresponding universal families of simple vector bundles.
In this paper we study the geometry of toric degeneration of a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) variety. We give some applications to BSDH varieties. Precisely, we classify Fano, weak Fano and log Fano BSDH varieties and their toric limits in Kac-Moody setting. We prove some vanishing theorems for the cohomology of tangent bundle (and line bundles) on BSDH varieties. We also recover the results in arXiv:1604.01998, by toric methods.
In this paper we introduce the notion of a geometric associative r-matrix attached to a genus one fibration with a section and irreducible fibres. It allows us to study degenerations of solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation using the approach of Polishchuk. We also calculate certain solutions of the classical, quantum and associative Yang-Baxter equations obtained from moduli spaces of (semi-)stable vector bundles on Weierstrass cubic curves.
A theorem of Green says that a line bundle of degree at least $2g+1+p$ on a smooth curve $X$ of genus $g$ has property $N_p$. We prove a similar conclusion for certain singular, reducible curves $X$ under suitable degree bounds over all irreducible components of $X$.
Projective duality identifies the moduli spaces $\mathbf{B}_n$ and $\mathbf{X}(3,n)$ parametrizing linearly general configurations of $n$ points in $\mathbb{P}^2$ and $n$ lines in the dual $\mathbb{P}^2$, respectively. The space $\mathbf{X}(3,n)$ admits Kapranov's Chow quotient compactification $\overline{\mathbf{X}}(3,n)$, studied also by Lafforgue, Hacking, Keel, Tevelev, and Alexeev, which gives an example of a KSBA moduli space of stable surfaces: it carries a family of certain reducible degenerations of $\mathbb{P}^2$ with $n$ "broken lines". Gerritzen and Piwek proposed a dual perspectiv…
We describe here a degeneration of the symplectic desingularization of the moduli spaces of topologically trivial $GL(2,\mathbb{C})$ and $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-Higgs bundles over a hyperelliptic curve, into O'Grady's ten and six dimensional exceptional examples of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. Most of this note is a survey of work on these degenerations by Donagi-Ein-Lazarsfeld, de Cataldo-Maulik-Shen and Felissetti-Mauri, although in certain cases we provide details that were missing the previous articles.
Let $M(2,\textbf{\underline{w}},χ)$ be the moduli space of rank $2$ torsion-free sheaves over a reducible nodal curve with each component having utmost two nodal singularities. We show that in each component of $M(2,\textbf{\underline{w}},χ)$, the closure of rank $2$ vector bundles with fixed determinant is rational.
We describe limits of line bundles on nodal curves in terms of toric arrangements associated to Voronoi tilings of Euclidean spaces. These tilings encode information on the relationship between the possibly infinitely many limits, and ultimately give rise to a new definition of limit linear series. This article and the first two that preceded it are the first in a series aimed to explore this new approach. In Part I, we set up the combinatorial framework and showed how graphs weighted with integer lengths associated to the edges provide tilings of Euclidean spaces by certain polytopes associat…
For a regular pair $(X,Y)$ of schemes of pure codimension 1 on which 2 is invertible, we consider quadric bundles on $X$ which are nondegenerate on $X-Y$, but are minimally degenerate on $Y$. We give a formula for the behaviour of the cohomological invariants (characteristic classes) of the nondegenerate quadric bundle on $X-Y$ under the Gysin boundary map to the etale cohomology of $Y$ with mod 2 coefficients. The results here are the algebro-geometric analogs of topological results for complex bundles proved earlier by Holla and Nitsure, continuing further the algebraization program which wa…
In this paper, we study maps from reducible curves $f : C \cup_ΓD \to \mathbb{P}^r$. We restrict our attention to two cases: first, when $f|_D$ factors through a hyperplane $H$ and $f|_C$ is transverse to $H$; and second, when $r = 3$. Degeneration to stable maps of this type have played a crucial role in works of Hartshorne, Ballico, and others, on special cases of the maximal rank conjecture. However, the general problem of studying when such stable maps with specified combinatorial types exist remains open. Here, we give criteria for such Brill--Noether curves of this first type to exist, o…
We use the toric degeneration of Bott-Samelson varieties and the description of cohomolgy of line bundles on toric varieties to deduce vanishings results for the cohomology of lines bundles on Bott-Samelson varieties.
We study a toric degeneration of the Cox ring of the moduli of principal $SL_m(\mathbb{C})$ bundles on the projective line, with quasi parabolic data given by the the stabilizer of the highest weight vector in $\mathbb{C}^m$ and its dual $\bigwedge^{m-1}(\mathbb{C}^m)$. The affine semigroup algebra resulting from this degeneration is described using the $K-$Pieri rule from Kac-Moody representation theory. Along the way we give a proof of the $K-$Pieri rule which utilizes the classical Pieri rule and elements of commutative algebra, and we describe a relationship between the Cox ring and a clas…
In this paper we show that semistable vector bundles on a Castelnuovo curve of genus g >= 2 have theta divisors. As a corollary, we deduce that semistable vector bundles on a smooth, general curve of genus g >= 2 which extend to semistable vector bundles on any Castelnuovo degeneration of the general curve admit a theta divisor.
Mumford and Newstead generalized the classical Torelli theorem to higher rank i.e., a smooth, projective curve $X$ is uniquely determined by the second intermediate Jacobian of the moduli space of stable rank $2$ bundles on $X$, with fixed odd degree determinant. In this article we prove the analogous result in the case $X$ is an irreducible nodal curve with one node. As a byproduct, we obtain the degeneration of the second intermediate Jacobians and the associated Néron model of a family of such moduli spaces.
We show the stability of certain syzygies of line bundles on curves, which we call transforms, and are kernels of the evaluation map on subspaces of the space of global sections. For the transforms constructed, we prove the existence of reducible theta divisors, in the cases where the slope is integer.
We prove by degeneration to Prym-canonical binary curves that the first Gaussian map of the Prym canonical line bundle $ω_C \otimes A$ is surjective for the general point [C,A] of R_g if g >11, while it is injective if g < 12.

For any projective curve $X$ let $\bar{M}^d(X)$ be the Simpson moduli space of pure dimension one rank 1 degree $d$ sheaves that are semistable with respect to a fixed polarization $H$ on $X$. When $X$ is a reduced curve the connected component of $\bar{M}^d(X)$ that contains semistable line bundles can be considered as the compactified Jacobian of $X$. In this paper we give explicitly the structure of this compactified Simpson Jacobian for the following projective curves: tree-like curves and all reduced and reducible curves that can appear as Kodaira singular fibers of an elliptic fibration,…
We study the geometry and the singularities of the principal direction of the Drinfeld-Lafforgue-Vinberg degeneration of the moduli space of G-bundles Bun_G for an arbitrary reductive group G, and their relationship to the Langlands dual group of G. In the first part of the article we study the monodromy action on the nearby cycles sheaf along the principal degeneration of Bun_G. We describe the weight-monodromy filtration in terms of the combinatorics of the Langlands dual group of G and generalizations of the Picard-Lefschetz oscillators found in [Sch1]. Our proofs use certain local models f…

Mustafin varieties are well-studied degenerations of projective spaces induced by a choice of integral points in a Bruhat--Tits building. In recent work, Annette Werner and the author initiated the study of degenerations of plane curves obtained by Mustafin varieties by means of arithmetic geometry. Moreover, we applied these techniques to construct models of vector bundles on plane curves with strongly semistable reduction. In this work, we take a Groebner basis approach to the more general problem of studying degenerations of projective varieties. Our methods include determining the behaviou…
Given a vector bundle with integrable connection $(V,\nabla)$ on a curve, if $V$ is not itself semistable as a vector bundle then we can iterate a construction involving modification by the destabilizing subobject to obtain a Hodge-like filtration $F^p$ which satisfies Griffiths transversality. The associated graded Higgs bundle is the limit of $(V,t\nabla)$ under the de Rham to Dolbeault degeneration. We get a stratification of the moduli space of connections, with as minimal stratum the space of opers. The strata have fibrations whose fibers are Lagrangian subspaces of the moduli space.
