Mustafin varieties are well-studied degenerations of projective spaces induced by a choice of integral points in a Bruhat--Tits building. In recent work, Annette Werner and the author initiated the study of degenerations of plane curves obtained by Mustafin varieties by means of arithmetic geometry. Moreover, we applied these techniques to construct models of vector bundles on plane curves with strongly semistable reduction. In this work, we take a Groebner basis approach to the more general problem of studying degenerations of projective varieties. Our methods include determining the behaviour of Groebner bases under substitution over unique factorisation rings. Finally, we outline applications to the $p-$adic Simpson correspondence, when the respective projective variety is a curve.
A Mustafin variety is a degeneration of projective space induced by a point configuration in a Bruhat-Tits building. The special fiber is reduced and Cohen-Macaulay, and its irreducible components form interesting combinatorial patterns. For configurations that lie in one apartment, these patterns are regular mixed subdivisions of scaled simplices, and the Mustafin variety is a twisted Veronese variety built from such a subdivision. This connects our study to tropical and toric geometry. For general configurations, the irreducible components of the special fiber are rational varieties, and any…
Mustafin varieties are flat degenerations of projective spaces, induced by a choice of an $n-$tuple of lattices in a vector space over a non-archimedean field. They were introduced by Mustafin in the 70s in order to generalise Mumford's groundbreaking work on the unformisation of curves to higher dimension. These varieties have a rich combinatorial structure as can be seen in pioneering work of Cartwright, Häbich, Sturmfels and Werner. In this paper, we introduce a new approach to Mustafin varieties in terms of images of rational maps, which were studied by Li. Applying tropical intersection t…
Our goal is to analyse singularities of integral models of Shimura varieties. One approach is to construct local models, which model the singularities of the corresponding integral model using linear algebra dada and find resolutions with mild singularities thereof. More precisely we will attack the question of existence of semi-stable resolutions. We will discuss an approach developed by Genestier. In this approach a candidate for a semi-stable resolution was given as the blow-up of a Grassmannian variety in Schubert varieties of its special fiber. Explicit calculations show that this approac…
A Mustafin degeneration is a degeneration of a flag variety induced by a vertex configuration in the Bruhat-Tits building of the projective linear group over a field with a non-archimedean discrete valuation. In the case where the flag type is projective space, Mustafin degenerations have been studied previously. We generalize the construction to the case of arbitrary flag types. We examine the special fiber of a Mustafin degeneration for reducedness and study the behavior of its components under a natural projection morphism between Mustafin degenerations, which arises from the inclusion of f…
We construct irreducible complex projective varieties such that the Lyubeznik numbers of their affine cones depend on the choices of projective embeddings. The main ingredient is the recent work of Reichelt-Saito-Walther, where the Lyubeznik numbers are reinterpreted using perverse sheaves and reducible projective varieties with dependent Lyubeznik numbers are constructed.
In this paper, we study smooth proper rigid varieties which admit formal models whose special fibers are projective. The main theorem asserts that the identity components of the associated rigid Picard varieties will automatically be proper. Consequently, we prove that p-adic Hopf varieties will never have a projective reduction. The proof of our main theorem uses the theory of moduli of semistable coherent sheaves.
We construct examples of smooth proper rigid-analytic varieties admitting formal model with projective special fiber and violating Hodge symmetry for cohomology in degrees $\geq 3$. This answers negatively a question raised by Hansen and Li.
We investigate degenerations of syzygy bundles on plane curves over $p$-adic fields. We use Mustafin varieties which are degenerations of projective spaces to find a large family of models of plane curves over the ring of integers such that the special fiber consists of multiple projective lines meeting in one point. On such models we investigate vector bundles whose generic fiber is a syzygy bundle and which become trivial when restricted to each projective line in the special fiber. Hence these syzygy bundles have strongly semistable reduction. This investigation is motivated by the fundamen…
The degree of a projective subscheme has an upper bound in term of the codimension and the reduction number. If a projective variety has an almost maximal degree, that is, the degree equals to the upper bound minus one, then its Betti table has been described explicitly. We build on this work by showing that for most of such varieties, the defining ideals are componentwise linear and in particular the componentwise linearity is suitable for classifying the Betti tables of such varieties. As an application, we compute the Betti table of all varieties with almost maximal degree and componentwise…
Let $R$ be a positively graded finitely generated $\textbf{k}$-domain with Krull dimension $d+1$. We show that there is a homogeneous valuation $\mathfrak{v}: R \setminus \{0\} \to \mathbb{Z}^d$ of rank $d$ such that the associated graded $\text{gr}_\mathfrak{v}(R)$ is finitely generated. This then implies that any polarized $d$-dimensional projective variety $X$ has a flat deformation over $\mathbb{A}^1$, with reduced and irreducible fibers, to a polarized projective complexity-one $T$-variety (i.e. a variety with a faithful action of a $(d-1)$-dimensional torus $T$). As an application we con…
We show that the d-th secant variety of a projective curve of genus g imbedded in projective space by a complete linear system of degree 2g-2+m, with m at least 2d+3, does not contain linear spaces of dimension bigger than d-1, and that the only linear subspaces of dimension d-1 contained in it are the obvious ones.
In this note, we prove that for any finite dimensional vector space $V$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, and for any finite subgroup $G$ of $GL(V)$ which is either solvable or is generated by pseudo reflections such that the $|G|$ is a unit in $k$, the projective variety $\mathbb P(V)/G$ is projectively normal with respect to the descent of $\mathcal O(1)^{\otimes |G|}$.
Given a projective variety X defined over a finite field, the zeta function of divisors attempts to count all irreducible, codimension one subvarieties of X, each measured by their projective degree. When the dimension of X is greater than one, this is a purely p-adic function, convergent on the open unit disk. Four conjectures are expected to hold, the first of which is p-adic meromorphic continuation to all of C_p. When the divisor class group (divisors modulo linear equivalence) of X has rank one, then all four conjectures are known to be true. In this paper, we discuss the higher rank case…
Euler-symmetric projective varieties are nondegenerate projective varieties admitting many C*-actions of Euler type. They are quasi-homogeneous and uniquely determined by their fundamental forms at a general point. We show that Euler-symmetric projective varieties can be classified by symbol systems, a class of algebraic objects modeled on the systems of fundamental forms at general points of projective varieties. We study relations between the algebraic properties of symbol systems and the geometric properties of Euler-symmetric projective varieties. We describe also the relation between Eule…
We give an upper bound on the number of rational points of an arbitrary Zariski closed subset of a projective space over a finite field. This bound depends only on the dimensions and degrees of the irreducible components and holds for very general varieties, even reducible and non equidimensional. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Ghorpade and Lachaud on the maximal number of rational points of an equidimensional projective variety.
We compute the Hilbert series of general weighted flag varieties and discuss a computer-aided method to determine their defining equations. We apply our results to weighted flag varieties coming from the Lie groups of type G_2 and GL(6), to construct some families of polarised projective varieties in codimensions 8 and 6, respectively.
We give a classification of embedded smooth projective varieties swept out by rational homogeneous varieties whose Picard number and codimension are one.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over an algebraically closed field. We show that $A$ is the automorphism group scheme of some smooth projective variety if and only if $A$ has only finitely many automorphisms as an algebraic group. This generalizes a result of Lombardo and Maffei for complex abelian varieties.
It is known that projective minimal models satisfy the celebrated Miyaoka-Yau inequalities. In this article, we extend these inequalities to the set of all smooth, projective and non-uniruled varieties.
We compute the divisor class group and the Picard group of projective varieties with Hibi rings as homogeneous coordinate rings. These varieties are precisely the toric varieties associated to order polytopes. We use tools from the theory of toric varieties to get a description of the two groups which only depends on combinatorial properties of the underlying poset.
Here we explore the geometry of the osculating spaces to projective varieties of arbitrary dimension. In particular, we classify varieties having very degenerate higher order osculating spaces and we determine mild conditions for the existence of inflectionary points.
Symmetric varieties are normal equivariant open embeddings of symmetric homogeneous spaces and they are interesting examples of spherical varieties. The principal goal of this article is to study the rigidity under Kähler deformations of smooth projective symmetric varieties with Picard number one.
The Lefschetz algebra $L^*(X)$ of a smooth complex projective variety $X$ is the subalgebra of the cohomology algebra of $X$ generated by divisor classes. We construct smooth complex projective varieties whose Lefschetz algebras do not satisfy analogues of the hard Lefschetz theorem and Poincaré duality.
We define a quasi--projective reduction of a complex algebraic variety $X$ to be a regular map from $X$ to a quasi--projective variety that is universal with respect to regular maps from $X$ to quasi--projective varieties. A toric quasi--projective reduction is the analogous notion in the category of toric varieties. For a given toric variety $X$ we first construct a toric quasi--projective reduction. Then we show that $X$ has a quasi--projective reduction if and only if its toric quasi--projective reduction is surjective. We apply this result to characterize when the action of a subtorus on a…
In this note we introduce the concept of reflective projective varieties. These are stratified projective varieties with certain dimension constraints on their dual varieties. We prove that for such varieties, the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of the strata completely determine the local Euler obstructions and the polar degrees. We also propose an algorithm to compute the local Euler obstructions when such varieties are formed by group orbits. As examples we compute the local Euler obstructions of quadratic hypersurfaces and ordinary determinantal varieties to illustrate our method.
We study the equivariant cobordism rings for the action of a torus $T$ on smooth varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove a theorem describing the rational $T$-equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective $G$-spherical varieties with the action of a maximal torus $T$ of $G$. As an application, we obtain explicit presentations for the rational equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective horospherical varieties of Picard number one.
We describe smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. Moreover we prove that the automorphism group of any such variety acts with at most two orbits and we give a geometric characterisation of non-homogeneous ones.
We prove an elementary but somewhat unexpected result about projective embeddings of smooth varieties X whose cotangent bundles are numerically effective. Specifically, we show that the degree of X in any projective embedding must grow (almost) exponentially in the dimension of X.
We show that the moduli space of rank three toric vector bundles on smooth projective toric varieties satisfies Murphy's law, that is, every singularity type of finite type arises somewhere on this space.
The geometric and algebraic properties of smooth projective varieties with 1-regular structure sheaf are well understood, and the complete classification of these varieties is a classical result. The aim of this paper is to study the next case: smooth projective varieties with 2-regular structure sheaf. First, we give a classification of such varieties using adjunction mappings. Next, under suitable conditions, we study the syzygies of section rings of those varieties to understand the structure of the Betti tables, and show a sharp bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
We give an algorithm for computing Segre classes of subschemes of arbitrary projective varieties by computing degrees of a sequence of linear projections. Based on the fact that Segre classes of projective varieties commute with intersections by general effective Cartier divisors, we can compile a system of linear equations which determine the coefficients for the Segre class pushed forward to projective space. The algorithm presented here comes after several others which solve the problem in special cases, where the ambient variety is for instance projective space; to our knowledge, this is t…
We use a generalization of Horrocks monads for arithmetic Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) varieties to establish a cohomological characterization of linear and Steiner bundles over projective spaces and quadric hypersurfaces. We also study resolutions of bundles on ACM varieties by line bundles, and characterize linear homological dimension in the case of quadric hypersurfaces.
We classify all smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. We prove that the automorphism group of any such variety X acts with at most two orbits and that this group still acts with only two orbits on X blown up at the closed orbit. We characterize all smooth projective two-orbits varieties with Picard number 1 that satisfy this latter property.
We make explicit the equations of any projective $PGL_2(\C)$-variety defined by quadrics. We study their zero-locus and their relationship with the geometry of the Veronese curve.
We shortly describe the algorithms behind some of the functions provided by the Macaulay2 package MultiprojectiveVarieties, a package for multi-projective varieties and rational maps between them.
We classify the Ulrich vector bundles of arbitrary rank on smooth projective varieties of minimal degree. In the process, we prove the stability of the sheaves of relative differentials on rational scrolls.
In this paper we characterize smooth complex projective varieties that admit a quadric bundle structure on some dense open subset in terms of the geometry of certain families of rational curves.
Let $G$ be a semi-simple algebraic group over a perfect field $k$. A lot of progress has been made recently in computing the Chow motives of projective $G$-homogenous varieties. When $k$ has positive characteristic, a broader class of $G$-homogeneous varieties appear. These are varieties over which $G$ acts transitively with possibly non-reduced isotropy subgroup. In this paper we study these varieties which we call ${\it \mbox{projective pseudo-homogeneous varieties}}$ for $G$ inner type over $k$ and prove that their motives satisfy Rost nilpotence. We also find their motivic decompositions a…
We reduce the problem of the projective normality of polarized abelian varieties to check the rank of very explicit matrices. This allow us to prove some results on normal generation of primitive line bundles on abelian threefolds and fourfolds. We also give two situations where the projective normality always fails. Finally we make some conjecture.
Let $\V$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field $k$. We solve Berthelot's conjectures on the stability of the holonomicity over smooth projective formal $\V$-schemes. Then we build a category of complexes of arithmetic $\D$-modules over quasi-projective $k$-varieties with bounded, $F$-holonomic cohomology. We get its stability under Grothendieck's six operations.
The automorphism group of a projective bundle P(E) over a simplicial toric variety is described when the bundle E is a direct sum of line bundles. Applications to study of moduli of complete intersections on toric varieties, including Calabi Yau m-folds and Del Pezzo surfaces, are indicated.
We prove that the universal cover of a normal, projective variety X is quasi-projective if and only if a finite, étale cover of X is a fiber bundle over an Abelian variety with simply connected fiber.
We define partially ample subvarieties of projective varieties, generalizing Ottem's work on ample subvarieties, and show their ubiquity. As an application, we obtain a connectedness result for pre-images of subvarieties by morphisms, reminiscent to a problem posed by Fulton-Hansen.
