We consider Hamiltonian systems in first-order multisymplectic field theories. We review the properties of Hamiltonian systems in the so-called restricted multimomentum bundle, including the variational principle which leads to the Hamiltonian field equations. In an analogous way to how these systems are defined in the so-called extended (symplectic) formulation of non-autonomous mechanics, we introduce Hamiltonian systems in the extended multimomentum bundle. The geometric properties of these systems are studied, the Hamiltonian equations are analyzed using integrable multivector fields, the corresponding variational principle is also stated, and the relation between the extended and the restricted Hamiltonian systems is established. All these properties are also adapted to certain kinds of submanifolds of the multimomentum bundles in order to cover the case of almost-regular field theories.
We present a general classification of Hamiltonian multivector fields and of Poisson forms on the extended multiphase space appearing in the geometric formulation of first order classical field theories. This is a prerequisite for computing explicit expressions for the Poisson bracket between two Poisson forms.
In this article we inspect the dynamics of classical field theories with a local conformal behavior. Our interest in the multisymplectic setting comes from its suitable description of field theories, and the conformal character has been added to account for field theories that are scale invariant, flat spaces, and because some conformal fields can be exactly solved or classified. In particular, we will solve the example of a conformal scalar field using the geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory that is explicitly proposed for conformal fields on a multisymplectic manifold. To complete the geometric…
We state a unified geometrical version of the variational principles for second-order classical field theories. The standard Lagrangian and Hamiltonian variational principles and the corresponding field equations are recovered from this unified framework.
We consider the De Donder-Weyl (DW) Hamiltonian formulation of the Palatini action of vielbein gravity formulated in terms of the solder form and spin connection, which are treated as independent variables. The basic geometrical constructions necessary for the DW Hamiltonian theory of vielbein gravity are presented. We reproduce the DW Hamilton equations in the multisymplectic and pre-multisymplectic formulations. We also give basic examples of Hamiltonian (n-1)-forms and related Poisson brackets.
In the jet bundle description of Field Theories (multisymplectic models, in particular), there are several choices for the multimomentum bundle where the covariant Hamiltonian formalism takes place. As a consequence, several proposals for this formalism can be stated, and, on each one of them, the differentiable structures needed for setting the formalism are obtained in different ways. In this work we make an accurate study of some of these Hamiltonian formalisms, showing their equivalence. In particular, the geometrical structures (canonical or not) needed for the Hamiltonian formalism, are …
This review paper is devoted to presenting the standard multisymplectic formulation for describing geometrically classical field theories, both the regular and singular cases. First, the main features of the Lagrangian formalism are revisited and, second, the Hamiltonian formalism is constructed using Hamiltonian sections. In both cases, the variational principles leading to the Euler-Lagrange and the Hamilton-De Donder-Weyl equations, respectively, are stated, and these field equations are given in different but equivalent geometrical ways in each formalism. Finally, both are unified in a new…
The objective of this work is twofold: First, we analyze the relation between the k-cosymplectic and the k-symplectic Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formalisms in classical field theories. In particular, we prove the equivalence between k-symplectic field theories and the so-called autonomous k-cosymplectic field theories, extending in this way the description of the symplectic formalism of autonomous systems as a particular case of the cosymplectic formalism in non-autonomous mechanics. Furthermore, we clarify some aspects of the geometric character of the solutions to the Hamilton-de Donder-Weyl…
The geometric framework for the Hamilton-Jacobi theory developed in previous works is extended for multisymplectic first-order classical field theories. The Hamilton-Jacobi problem is stated for the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms of these theories as a particular case of a more general problem, and the classical Hamilton-Jacobi equation for field theories is recovered from this geometrical setting. Particular and complete solutions to these problems are defined and characterized in several equivalent ways in both formalisms, and the equivalence between them is proved. The use of dis…
We present a new multisymplectic framework for second-order classical field theories which is based on an extension of the unified Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism to these kinds of systems. This model provides a straightforward and simple way to define the Poincaré-Cartan form and clarifies the construction of the Legendre map (univocally obtained as a consequence of the constraint algorithm). Likewise, it removes the undesirable arbitrariness in the solutions to the field equations, which are analyzed in-depth, and written in terms of holonomic sections and multivector fields. Our treatment …
This paper presents a geometric-variational approach to continuous and discrete {\it second-order} field theories following the methodology of \cite{MPS}. Staying entirely in the Lagrangian framework and letting $Y$ denote the configuration fiber bundle, we show that both the multisymplectic structure on $J^3Y$ as well as the Noether theorem arise from the first variation of the action function. We generalize the multisymplectic form formula derived for first order field theories in \cite{MPS}, to the case of second-order field theories, and we apply our theory to the Camassa-Holm (CH) equatio…
We present a classification of hamiltonian vector fields on multisymplectic and polysymplectic fiber bundles closely analogous to the one known for the corresponding dual jet bundles that appear in the multisymplectic and polysymplectic approach to first order classical field theories.
Symmetries and, in particular, Cartan (Noether) symmetries and conserved quantities (conservation laws) are studied for the multisymplectic formulation of first and second order Lagrangian classical field theories. Noether-type theorems are stated in this geometric framework. The concept of gauge symmetry and its geometrical meaning are also discussed in this formulation. The results are applied to study Noether and gauge symmetries for the multisymplectic description of the electromagnetic and the gravitational theory; in particular, the Einstein--Hilbert and the Einstein--Palatini approaches…
The (pre)multisymplectic geometry of the De Donder--Weyl formalism for field theories is further developed for a variety of field theories including a scalar field theory from the canonical Klein-Gordon action, the electric and magnetic Carrollian scalar field theories, bosonic string theory from the Nambu-Goto action, and $2+1$ gravity as a Chern-Simons theory. The Lagrangians for the scalar field theories and for $2+1$ Chern-Simons gravity are found to be singular in the De Donder--Weyl sense while the Nambu-Goto Lagrangian is found to be regular. Furthermore, the constraint structure of the…
We describe a new algebraic multisymplectic formulation of the classical BRST symmetry. The analogue of Marsden-Weinstein reduction for multisymplectic manifolds is described. We then give a homological description of Multisymplectic Marsden-Weinstein reduction.
Multisymplectic geometry - which originates from the well known de Donder-Weyl theory - is a natural framework for the study of classical field theories. Recently, two algebraic structures have been put forward to encode a given theory algebraically. Those structures are formulated on finite dimensional spaces, which seems to be surprising at first. In this article, we investigate the correspondence of Hamiltonian functions and certain antisymmetric tensor products of vector fields. The latter turn out to be the proper generalisation of the Hamiltonian vector fields of classical mechanics. Thu…
This work provides a general overview for the treatment of symmetries in classical field theories and (pre)multisymplectic geometry. The geometric characteristics of the relation between how symmetries are interpreted in theoretical physics and in the geometric formulation of these theories are clarified. Finally, a general discussion is given on the structure of symmetries in the presence of constraints appearing in singular field theories. Symmetries of some typical theories in theoretical physics are analyzed through the construction of the relevant multimomentum maps which are the conserve…
A geometric multisymplectic formulation of the classical BRST symmetry of constrained first-order classical field theories is described. To effect this we introduce graded analogues of the bundles and manifolds of the multisymplectic formulation of first-order field theories. The Lagrange-d'Alembert formalism is also developed in terms of the multisymplectic framework. The result is a covariant Hamiltonian BFV formalism.
We present a geometric algorithm for obtaining consistent solutions to systems of partial differential equations, mainly arising from singular covariant first-order classical field theories. This algorithm gives an intrinsic description of all the constraint submanifolds. The field equations are stated geometrically, either representing their solutions by integrable connections or, what is equivalent, by certain kinds of integrable m-vector fields. First, we consider the problem of finding connections or multivector fields solutions to the field equations in a general framework: a pre-multisym…
We use the kernel of a premultisymplecic form to classify its solutions, inspired by the work of M. Gotay and J. Nester. In the case of variational premultisymplectic forms, there is an equivalence relation which classify the solutions in general distributions called expanded solutions. We also present an equivalence relation for sections and a reduction procedure for the system. We apply this results to mechanics, electromagnetism and Metric-Affine gravity, and compare them with other notions of gauge freedom.
This paper presents a generalization of symplectic geometry to a principal bundle over the configuration space of a classical field. This bundle, the vertically adapted linear frame bundle, is obtained by breaking the symmetry of the full linear frame bundle of the field configuration space, and it inherits a generalized symplectic structure from the full frame bundle. The geometric structure of the vertically adapted frame bundle admits vector-valued field observables and produces vector-valued Hamiltonian vector fields, from which we can define a Poisson bracket on the field observables. We …
In this paper the notion of Tulczyjew's triples in classical mechanics is extended to classical field theories, using the so-called multisymplectic formalism, and a convenient notion of lagrangian submanifold in multisymplectic geometry. Accordingly, the dynamical equations are interpreted as the local equations defining these lagrangian submanifolds.
In this article, we treat G_2-geometry as a special case of multisymplectic geometry and make a number of remarks regarding Hamiltonian multivector fields and Hamiltonian differential forms on manifolds with an integrable G_2-structure; in particular, we discuss existence and make a number of identifications of the spaces of Hamiltonian structures associated to the two multisymplectic structures associated to an integrable G_2-structure. Along the way, we prove some results in multisymplectic geometry that are generalizations of results from symplectic geometry.
We present a general definition of the Poisson bracket between differential forms on the extended multiphase space appearing in the geometric formulation of first order classical field theories and, more generally, on exact multisymplectic manifolds. It is well defined for a certain class of differential forms that we propose to call Poisson forms and turns the space of Poisson forms into a Lie superalgebra.
A new Poisson bracket for Hamiltonian forms on the full multisymplectic phase space is defined. At least for forms of degree n-1, where n is the dimension of space-time, Jacobi's identity is fulfilled.
The jet formalism for Classical Field theories is extended to the setting of Lie algebroids. We define the analog of the concept of jet of a section of a bundle and we study some of the geometric structures of the jet manifold. When a Lagrangian function is given, we find the equations of motion in terms of a Cartan form canonically associated to the Lagrangian. The Hamiltonian formalism is also extended to this setting and we find the relation between the solutions of both formalism. When the first Lie algebroid is a tangent bundle we give a variational description of the equations of motion.…
We present a geometric framework for discrete classical field theories, where fields are modeled as "morphisms" defined on a discrete grid in the base space, and take values in a Lie groupoid. We describe the basic geometric setup and derive the field equations from a variational principle. We also show that the solutions of these equations are multisymplectic in the sense of Bridges and Marsden. The groupoid framework employed here allows us to recover not only some previously known results on discrete multisymplectic field theories, but also to derive a number of new results, most notably a …
In this paper we extend the geometric formalism of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory for hamiltonian mechanics to the case of classical field theories in the framework of multisymplectic geometry and Ehresmann connections.
This lecture is devoted to review some of the main properties of multisymplectic geometry. In particular, after reminding the standard definition of multisymplectic manifold, we introduce its characteristic submanifolds, the canonical models, and other relevant kinds of multisymplectic manifolds, such as those where the existence of Darboux-type coordinates is assured. The Hamiltonian structures that can be defined in these manifolds are also studied, as well as other important properties, such as their invariant forms and the characterization by automorphisms.
Recently, M. de León el al. ([8]) have developed a geometrical description of Hamilton-Jacobi theory for multisymplectic field theory. In our paper we analyse in the same spirit a special kind of field theories which are gauge field theories. The Hamilton-Jacobi theory for this kind of fields is shown.
We present a covariant multisymplectic formulation for the Einstein-Palatini (or Metric-Affine) model of General Relativity (without energy-matter sources). As it is described by a first-order affine Lagrangian (in the derivatives of the fields), it is singular and, hence, this is a gauge field theory with constraints. These constraints are obtained after applying a constraint algorithm to the field equations, both in the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms. In order to do this, the covariant field equations must be written in a suitable geometrical way, using integrable distributions wh…
We analyze the inherent symmetries associated to the non-Abelian topological BF theory from the geometric and covariant perspectives of the Lagrangian and the multisymplectic formalisms. At the Lagrangian level, we classify the symmetries of the theory as natural and Noether symmetries and construct the associated Noether currents, while at the multisymplectic level the symmetries of the theory arise as covariant canonical transformations. These transformations allowed us to build within the multisymplectic approach, in a complete covariant way, the momentum maps which are analogous to the con…
This book is devoted to review two of the most relevant approaches to the study of classical field theories of first order, say k-symplectic and k-cosymplectic. In the last part, we relate the k-symplectic and k-cosymplectic manifolds with the multisymplectic theory.
The transfer matrix in lattice field theory connects the covariant and the initial data frameworks; in spin foam models, it can be written as a composition of elementary cellular amplitudes/propagators. We present a framework for discrete spacetime classical field theory in which solutions to the field equations over elementary spacetime cells may be amalgamated if they satisfy simple gluing conditions matching the composition rules of cellular amplitudes in spin foam models. Furthermore, the formalism is endowed with a multisymplectic structure responsible for local conservation laws. Some mo…
We continue our study of zero-dimensional field theories in which the fields take values in a strong homotopy Lie algebra. In a first part, we review in detail how higher Chern-Simons theories arise in the AKSZ-formalism. These theories form a universal starting point for the construction of $L_\infty$-algebra models. We then show how to describe superconformal field theories and how to perform dimensional reductions in this context. In a second part, we demonstrate that Nambu-Poisson and multisymplectic manifolds are closely related via their Heisenberg algebras. As a byproduct of our discuss…
A multisymplectic setting for classical field theories subjected to non-holonomic constraints is presented. The infinite dimensional setting in the space of Cauchy data is also given.
Given a vector field on a manifold M, we define a globally conserved quantity to be a differential form whose Lie derivative is exact. Integrals of conserved quantities over suitable submanifolds are constant under time evolution, the Kelvin circulation theorem being a well-known special case. More generally, conserved quantities are well-behaved under transgression to spaces of maps into M. We focus on the case of multisymplectic manifolds and Hamiltonian vector fields. We show that in the presence of a Lie group of symmetries admitting a homotopy co-momentum map, one obtains a whole family o…
We consider the geometric formulation of the Hamiltonian formalism for field theory in terms of {\em Hamiltonian connections} and {\em multisymplectic forms}. In this framework the covariant Hamilton equations for Mechanics and field theory are defined in terms of multisymplectic $(n+2)$--forms, where $n$ is the dimension of the basis manifold, together with connections on the configuration bundle. We provide a new geometric Hamiltonian description of field theory, based on the introduction of a suitable {\em composite fibered bundle} which plays the role of an {\em extended configuration bund…
A geometric model for nonholonomic Lagrangian field theory is studied. The multisymplectic approach to such a theory as well as the corresponding Cauchy formalism are discussed. It is shown that in both formulations, the relevant equations for the constrained system can be recovered by a suitable projection of the equations for the underlying free (i.e. unconstrained) Lagrangian system.
This paper presents generalized momentum mappings for covariant Hamiltonian field theories. The new momentum mappings arise from a generalization of symplectic geometry to $L_VY$, the bundle of vertically adapted linear frames over the bundle of field configurations $Y$. Specifically, the generalized field momentum observables are vector-valued momentum mappings on the vertically adapted frame bundle generated from automorphisms of $Y$. The generalized symplectic geometry on $L_VY$ is a covering theory for multisymplectic geometry on the multiphase space $Z$, and it follows that the field mome…
Ideas from the theory of multisymplectic systems, introduced recently in integrable systems by the author and Kundu to discuss Liouville integrability in classical field theories with a defect, are applied to the sine-Gordon model. The key ingredient is the introduction of a second Poisson bracket in the theory that allows for a Hamiltonian description of the model that is completely equivalent to the standard one, in the absence of a defect. In the presence of a defect described by frozen Bäcklund transformations, our approach based on the new bracket unifies the various tools used so far to …
Field Theories in Physics can be formulated giving a local Lagrangian density. Locality is imposed using the infinite jet bundle. That bundle is viewed as a pro-finite dimensional smooth manifold and that point of view has been compared to different topological and Frechét structures on it. A category of local (insular) manifolds has been constructed. Noether's second theorem is reviewed and the notion of Lie pseudogroups is explored using these concepts. The L-infinity algebra of local observables is defined depending only on the cohomology of the Lagrangian (using a result in multisymplectic…
We present a covariant multisymplectic formulation for the Einstein-Hilbert model of General Relativity. As it is described by a second-order singular Lagrangian, this is a gauge field theory with constraints. The use of the unified Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism is particularly interesting when it is applied to these kinds of theories, since it simplifies the treatment of them; in particular, the implementation of the constraint algorithm, the retrieval of the Lagrangian description, and the construction of the covariant Hamiltonian formalism. In order to apply this algorithm to the covaria…
We define partial differential (PD in the following), i.e., field theoretic analogues of Hamiltonian systems on abstract symplectic manifolds and study their main properties, namely, PD Hamilton equations, PD Noether theorem, PD Poisson bracket, etc.. Unlike in standard multisymplectic approach to Hamiltonian field theory, in our formalism, the geometric structure (kinematics) and the dynamical information on the "phase space" appear as just different components of one single geometric object.
The multisymplectic description of Classical Field Theories is revisited, including its relation with the presymplectic formalism on the space of Cauchy data. Both descriptions allow us to give a complete scheme of classification of infinitesimal symmetries, and to obtain the corresponding conservation laws.
We introduce the concept of multisymplectic formalism, familiar in covariant field theory, for the study of integrable defects in 1+1 classical field theory. The main idea is the coexistence of two Poisson brackets, one for each spacetime coordinate. The Poisson bracket corresponding to the time coordinate is the usual one describing the time evolution of the system. Taking the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation as an example, we introduce the new bracket associated to the space coordinate. We show that, in the absence of any defect, the two brackets yield completely equivalent Hamiltonian d…
This paper introduces and studies a field theoretic analogue of the Clebsch variational principle of classical mechanics. This principle yields an alternative derivation of the covariant Euler-Poincaré equations that naturally includes covariant Clebsch variables via multisymplectic momentum maps. In the case of diffeomorphism groups, this approach gives a new interpretation of recently derived singular peakon solutions of Diff(R)-strand equations, and allows for the construction of singular solutions (such as filaments or sheets) for a more general class of equations, called covariant EPDiff …
