In this article we inspect the dynamics of classical field theories with a local conformal behavior. Our interest in the multisymplectic setting comes from its suitable description of field theories, and the conformal character has been added to account for field theories that are scale invariant, flat spaces, and because some conformal fields can be exactly solved or classified. In particular, we will solve the example of a conformal scalar field using the geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory that is explicitly proposed for conformal fields on a multisymplectic manifold. To complete the geometric approach to study field theories, we propose the Hamilton-Jacobi theory for conformal fields in a Cauchy data space, in which space and time are split separately and the dynamics is depicted in an infinite-dimensional manifold.
Recently, M. de León el al. ([9]) have developed a geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory for Classical Field Theories in the setting of multisymplectic geometry. Our purpose in the current paper is to establish the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi theory in the Cauchy data space, and relate both approaches.
The multisymplectic description of Classical Field Theories is revisited, including its relation with the presymplectic formalism on the space of Cauchy data. Both descriptions allow us to give a complete scheme of classification of infinitesimal symmetries, and to obtain the corresponding conservation laws.
A multisymplectic setting for classical field theories subjected to non-holonomic constraints is presented. The infinite dimensional setting in the space of Cauchy data is also given.
We introduce the concept of Type-I/II generating functionals defined on the space of boundary data of a Lagrangian field theory. On the Lagrangian side, we define an analogue of Jacobi's solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for field theories, and we show that by taking variational derivatives of this functional, we obtain an isotropic submanifold of the space of Cauchy data, described by the so-called multisymplectic form formula. We also define a Hamiltonian analogue of Jacobi's solution, and we show that this functional is a Type-II generating functional. We finish the paper by defining…
A geometric model for nonholonomic Lagrangian field theory is studied. The multisymplectic approach to such a theory as well as the corresponding Cauchy formalism are discussed. It is shown that in both formulations, the relevant equations for the constrained system can be recovered by a suitable projection of the equations for the underlying free (i.e. unconstrained) Lagrangian system.
The group of conformal diffeomorphisms and the group of causal automorphisms on two-dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetimes are clarified. It is shown that if spacetimes have non-compact Cauchy surfaces, then the groups are subgroups of that of two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, and if spacetimes have compact Cauchy surfaces, then the groups are subgroups of that of two-dimensional Einstein's static universe.
With the covariant formulation in hand from the first paper of this series (physics/9801019), we begin in this second paper to study the canonical (or ``instantaneous'') formulation of classical field theories. The canonical formluation works with fields defined as time-evolving cross sections of bundles over a Cauchy surface, rather than as sections of bundles over spacetime as in the covariant formulation. In Chapter 5 we begin to relate these approaches to classical field theory; in particular, we show how covariant multisymplectic geometry induces the instantaneous symplectic geometry of c…
New general results of non-existence and rigidity of spacelike submanifolds immersed in a spacetime, whose mean curvature is a time-oriented causal vector field, are given. These results hold for a wide class of spacetimes which includes globally hyperbolic, stationary, conformally stationary and pp-wave spacetimes, among others. Moreover, applications to the Cauchy problem in General Relativity, are presented. Finally, in the case of hypersurfaces, we also obtain significant consequences in Geometrical Analysis, solving new Calabi-Bernstein and Dirichlet problems on a Riemannian manifold.
We construct a complete conformal scattering theory for Maxwell fields in the static exterior region of a Reissner-Nordstrøm-de Sitter black bole spacetime. This is done using uniform energy decay results that we obtain in a separate paper, to show that the trace operators are injective and have closed ranges. We then solve the Goursat problem (characteristic Cauchy problem) for Maxwell fields on the null boundaries showing that the trace operators are also surjective.
We prove that semiclassical gravity in conformally static, globally hyperbolic spacetimes with a massless, conformally coupled Klein-Gordon field is well posed, when viewed as a coupled theory for the dynamical conformal factor of the metric and the Klein-Gordon theory. Namely, it admits unique and stable solutions whenever constrained fourth-order initial data for the conformal factor and suitably defined Hadamard initial data for the Klein-Gordon state are provided on a spacelike Cauchy surface. As no spacetime symmetries are imposed on the conformal factor, the present result implies that, …
A shear-free ray congruence on Minkowski space is a 3-parameter family of null geodesics along which Lie transport of a complementary 2-dimensional spacelike subspace (called the screen space) is conformal. Such congruences are defined by complex analytic surfaces in the associated twistor space $\CP^3$ and are the basis of the construction of massless fields. On a more general space-time, it is unclear how to couple the massless field with the gravitational field. In this article we do this by considering the following Cauchy-type problem: given a Riemannian 3-manifold $(M^3, g_0)$ endowed wi…

The pseudo-conformal field theory (PCFT) is a 4-d action, which depends on the lorentzian Cauchy-Riemann (LCR) structure. Like the 2-d linearized string action, it does not depend on the metric tensor. But the invariance under the pseudo-conformal transformations imposes in the action the existence of a gauge field instead of the scalar field of the string action. The tetrad of the LCR-structure defines a class of metrics and a corresponding class of self dual 2-forms. Soliton and multisoliton point of view of PCFT is described and related to the Einstein derivation of the equations of motion.…
We show the existence of families of orthonormal, future directed bases which allow to cast every skew-symmetric endomorphism of $\mathbb{M}^{1,n}$ ($\mathrm{SkewEnd}(\mathbb{M}^{1,n})$) in a single canonical form depending on a minimal number of parameters. This canonical form is shared by every pair of elements in $\mathrm{SkewEnd}(\mathbb{M}^{1,n})$ differing by an orthochronous Lorentz transformation, i.e. it defines the orbits of the orthochronous Lorentz group under the adjoint action on its algebra. Using this form, we obtain the quotient topology of $\mathrm{SkewEnd}(\mathbb{M}^{1,n})/…
We develop a scattering theory for the linear wave equation $\Box_g ψ= 0$ on the interior of Reissner-Nordström black holes, connecting the fixed frequency picture to the physical space picture. Our main result gives the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic completeness of finite energy scattering states. The past and future scattering states are represented as suitable traces of the solution $ψ$ on the bifurcate event and Cauchy horizons. The heart of the proof is to show that after separation of variables one has uniform boundedness of the reflection and transmission coefficients of the resu…
Four-dimensional spacetimes foliated by a two-parameter family of homologous two-surfaces are considered in Einstein's theory of gravity. By combining a 1+(1+2) decomposition, the canonical form of the spacetime metric and a suitable specification of the conformal structure of the foliating two-surfaces a gauge fixing is introduced. It is shown that, in terms of the chosen geometrically distinguished variables, the 1+3 Hamiltonian and momentum constraints can be recast into the form of a parabolic equation and a first order symmetric hyperbolic system, respectively. Initial data to this system…
The characteristic property of the 2-dimensional Polyakov action is its independence on the metric tensor, without being topological. A renormalizable 4-dimensional action is found satisfying this fundamental property. The fundamental quantity of this pseudo-conformal field theory (PCFT) is the lorentzian Cauchy-Riemann (LCR) structure. This action describes all current phenomenology: 1) The Poincaré group is determined. 2) Stable solitonic LCR-tetrads are found, which belong to representations of the Poincaré group and they are determined by the irreducible and reducible algebraic quadratic s…
Two first order strongly hyperbolic formulations of scalar-tensor theories of gravity (STT) allowing nonminimal couplings (Jordan frame) are presented along the lines of the 3+1 decomposition of spacetime. One is based on the Bona-Masso formulation while the other one employs a conformal decomposition similar to that of Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura. A modified Bona-Masso slicing condition adapted to the scalar-tensor theory is proposed for the analysis. This study confirms that the scalar-tensor theory posses a well posed Cauchy problem even when formulated in the Jordan frame.
