Multisymplectic geometry - which originates from the well known de Donder-Weyl theory - is a natural framework for the study of classical field theories. Recently, two algebraic structures have been put forward to encode a given theory algebraically. Those structures are formulated on finite dimensional spaces, which seems to be surprising at first. In this article, we investigate the correspondence of Hamiltonian functions and certain antisymmetric tensor products of vector fields. The latter turn out to be the proper generalisation of the Hamiltonian vector fields of classical mechanics. Thus we clarify the algebraic description of solutions of the field equations.
Multisymplectic geometry is an adequate formalism to geometrically describe first order classical field theories. The De Donder-Weyl equations are treated in the framework of multisymplectic geometry, solutions are identified as integral manifolds of Hamiltonean multivectorfields. In contrast to mechanics, solutions cannot be described by points in the multisymplectic phase space. Foliations of the configuration space by solutions and a multisymplectic version of Hamilton-Jacobi theory are also discussed.
The multisymplectic structure of the KP equation is obtained directly from the variational principal. Using the covariant De Donder-Weyl Hamilton function theories, we reformulate the KP equation to the multisymplectic form which proposed by Bridges. From the multisymplectic equation, we can derive a multisymplectic numerical scheme of the KP equation which can be simplified to multisymplectic forty-five points scheme.
In this paper we discussed the self-adjointness of the Maxwell's equations with variable coefficients $ε$ and $μ$. Three different Lagrangian are attained. By the Legendre transformation, a multisymplectic Bridge's (Hamilton) form is obtained. Based on the multisymplectic structure, the multisymplectic conservation law of the system is derived and a nine-point Preissman multisymplectic scheme which preserve the multisymplectic conservation law is given for the Maxwell's equations in an inhomogeneous, isotropic and lossless medium. At last a numerical example is illustrated.
Given a multisymplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ and a Lie algebra $\frak{g}$ acting on it by infinitesimal symmetries, Fregier-Rogers-Zambon define a homotopy (co-)moment as an $L_{\infty}$-algebra-homomorphism from $\frak{g}$ to the observable algebra $L(M,ω)$ associated to $(M,ω)$, in analogy with and generalizing the notion of a co-moment map in symplectic geometry. We give a cohomological characterization of existence and unicity for homotopy co-moment maps and show its utility in multisymplectic geometry by applying it to special cases as exact multisymplectic manifolds and simple Lie groups and…
A vertical exterior derivative is constructed that is needed for a graded Poisson structure on multisymplectic manifolds over nontrivial vector bundles. In addition, the properties of the Poisson bracket are proved and first examples are discussed.
We utilize Spin(7) identities to prove that the Cayley four-form associated to a torsion-free Spin(7)-Structure is non-degenerate in the sense of multisymplectic geometry. Therefore, Spin(7) geometry may be treated as a special case of multisymplectic geometry. We then capitalize on this relationship to make statements about Hamiltonian multivector fields and differential forms associated to torsion-free Spin(7)-Structures.
In the jet bundle description of Field Theories (multisymplectic models, in particular), there are several choices for the multimomentum bundle where the covariant Hamiltonian formalism takes place. As a consequence, several proposals for this formalism can be stated, and, on each one of them, the differentiable structures needed for setting the formalism are obtained in different ways. In this work we make an accurate study of some of these Hamiltonian formalisms, showing their equivalence. In particular, the geometrical structures (canonical or not) needed for the Hamiltonian formalism, are …
We extend Noether's theorem to the setting of multisymplectic geometry by exhibiting a correspondence between conserved quantities and continuous symmetries on a multi-Hamiltonian system. We show that a homotopy co-momentum map interacts with this correspondence in a way analogous to the moment map in symplectic geometry. We apply our results to generalize the theory of the classical momentum and position functions from the phase space of a given physical system to the multisymplectic phase space. We also apply our results to manifolds with a torsion-free $G_2$ structure.
This note provides an overview of the notion of observable within the setting of multisymplectic geometry. We essentially follow the ideas described by F. Hélein and J. Kouneiher [17] [18] [19] and in particular in keeping with the approach developed in [16]. The following discussion should be considered as a synthesis of the principal motives and results presented in those writings. This note is a contribution to the Frontiers of Fundamental Physics (FFP11) Conference Proceedings.
A notion of orthogonality in multisymplectic geometry has been developed by Cantrijn, Ibort and de León and used by many authors. In this paper, we review this concept and propose a new type of orthogonality in multisymplectic geometry; we prove a number of results regarding this orthogonality and its associated subspaces. We end by calculating the various subspaces of a G_2-vector space based on both types of orthogonality.
Many physically important mechanical systems may be described with a Lie group $G$ as configuration space. According to the well-known Noether's theorem, underlying symmetries of the Lie group may be used to considerably reduce the complexity of the problems. However, these reduction techniques, used without care for general problems (waves, field theory), may lead to uncomfortable infinite dimensional spaces. As an alternative, the \emph{covariant} formulation allows to consider a finite dimensional configuration space by increasing the number of independent variables. But the geometric eleme…
In this article, we treat G_2-geometry as a special case of multisymplectic geometry and make a number of remarks regarding Hamiltonian multivector fields and Hamiltonian differential forms on manifolds with an integrable G_2-structure; in particular, we discuss existence and make a number of identifications of the spaces of Hamiltonian structures associated to the two multisymplectic structures associated to an integrable G_2-structure. Along the way, we prove some results in multisymplectic geometry that are generalizations of results from symplectic geometry.
This paper presents a generalization of symplectic geometry to a principal bundle over the configuration space of a classical field. This bundle, the vertically adapted linear frame bundle, is obtained by breaking the symmetry of the full linear frame bundle of the field configuration space, and it inherits a generalized symplectic structure from the full frame bundle. The geometric structure of the vertically adapted frame bundle admits vector-valued field observables and produces vector-valued Hamiltonian vector fields, from which we can define a Poisson bracket on the field observables. We …
A manifold is multisymplectic, or more specifically n-plectic, if it is equipped with a closed nondegenerate differential form of degree n+1. In our previous work with Baez and Hoffnung, we described how the `higher analogs' of the algebraic and geometric structures found in symplectic geometry should naturally arise in 2-plectic geometry. In particular, we showed that just as a symplectic manifold gives a Poisson algebra of functions, any 2-plectic manifold gives a Lie 2-algebra of 1-forms and functions. Lie n-algebras are examples of L-infinity algebras: graded vector spaces which are equipp…
This paper presents generalized momentum mappings for covariant Hamiltonian field theories. The new momentum mappings arise from a generalization of symplectic geometry to $L_VY$, the bundle of vertically adapted linear frames over the bundle of field configurations $Y$. Specifically, the generalized field momentum observables are vector-valued momentum mappings on the vertically adapted frame bundle generated from automorphisms of $Y$. The generalized symplectic geometry on $L_VY$ is a covering theory for multisymplectic geometry on the multiphase space $Z$, and it follows that the field mome…
The (pre)multisymplectic geometry of the De Donder--Weyl formalism for field theories is further developed for a variety of field theories including a scalar field theory from the canonical Klein-Gordon action, the electric and magnetic Carrollian scalar field theories, bosonic string theory from the Nambu-Goto action, and $2+1$ gravity as a Chern-Simons theory. The Lagrangians for the scalar field theories and for $2+1$ Chern-Simons gravity are found to be singular in the De Donder--Weyl sense while the Nambu-Goto Lagrangian is found to be regular. Furthermore, the constraint structure of the…
This book is devoted to review two of the most relevant approaches to the study of classical field theories of first order, say k-symplectic and k-cosymplectic. In the last part, we relate the k-symplectic and k-cosymplectic manifolds with the multisymplectic theory.
This work provides a general overview for the treatment of symmetries in classical field theories and (pre)multisymplectic geometry. The geometric characteristics of the relation between how symmetries are interpreted in theoretical physics and in the geometric formulation of these theories are clarified. Finally, a general discussion is given on the structure of symmetries in the presence of constraints appearing in singular field theories. Symmetries of some typical theories in theoretical physics are analyzed through the construction of the relevant multimomentum maps which are the conserve…
In this paper the notion of Tulczyjew's triples in classical mechanics is extended to classical field theories, using the so-called multisymplectic formalism, and a convenient notion of lagrangian submanifold in multisymplectic geometry. Accordingly, the dynamical equations are interpreted as the local equations defining these lagrangian submanifolds.
In this paper we extend the geometric formalism of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory for hamiltonian mechanics to the case of classical field theories in the framework of multisymplectic geometry and Ehresmann connections.
Given a vector field on a manifold M, we define a globally conserved quantity to be a differential form whose Lie derivative is exact. Integrals of conserved quantities over suitable submanifolds are constant under time evolution, the Kelvin circulation theorem being a well-known special case. More generally, conserved quantities are well-behaved under transgression to spaces of maps into M. We focus on the case of multisymplectic manifolds and Hamiltonian vector fields. We show that in the presence of a Lie group of symmetries admitting a homotopy co-momentum map, one obtains a whole family o…

Recently, M. de León el al. ([9]) have developed a geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory for Classical Field Theories in the setting of multisymplectic geometry. Our purpose in the current paper is to establish the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi theory in the Cauchy data space, and relate both approaches.
We study higher-order analogues of Dirac structures, extending the multisymplectic structures that arise in field theory. We define higher Dirac structures as involutive subbundles of $TM+\wedge^k TM^*$ satisfying a weak version of the usual lagrangian condition (which agrees with it only when $k=1$). Higher Dirac structures transversal to $TM$ recover the higher Poisson structures introduced in [8] as the infinitesimal counterparts of multisymplectic groupoids. We describe the leafwise geometry underlying an involutive isotropic subbundle in terms of a distinguished 1-cocycle in a natural dif…
A Lie 2-algebra is a "categorified" version of a Lie algebra: that is, a category equipped with structures analogous those of a Lie algebra, for which the usual laws hold up to isomorphism. In the classical mechanics of point particles, the phase space is often a symplectic manifold, and the Poisson bracket of functions on this space gives a Lie algebra of observables. Multisymplectic geometry describes an n-dimensional field theory using a phase space that is an "n-plectic manifold": a finite-dimensional manifold equipped with a closed nondegenerate (n+1)-form. Here we consider the case n = 2…

This review paper is concerned with the generalizations to field theory of the tangent and cotangent structures and bundles that play fundamental roles in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of classical mechanics. The paper reviews, compares and constrasts the various generalizations in order to bring some unity to the field of study. The generalizations seem to fall into two categories. In one direction some have generalized the geometric structures of the bundles, arriving at the various axiomatic systems such as k-symplectic and k-tangent structures. The other direction was to fund…
In a companion paper, we introduced a notion of multi-Dirac structures, a graded version of Dirac structures, and we discussed their relevance for classical field theories. In the current paper we focus on the geometry of multi-Dirac structures. After recalling the basic definitions, we introduce a graded multiplication and a multi-Courant bracket on the space of sections of a multi-Dirac structure, so that the space of sections has the structure of a Gerstenhaber algebra. We then show that the graph of a k-form on a manifold gives rise to a multi-Dirac structure and also that this multi-Dirac…
This is the first paper of a five part work in which we study the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structure of classical field theories with constraints. Our goal is to explore some of the connections between initial value constraints and gauge transformations in such theories (either relativistic or not). To do this, in the course of these four papers, we develop and use a number of tools from symplectic and multisymplectic geometry. Of central importance in our analysis is the notion of the ``energy-momentum map'' associated to the gauge group of a given classical field theory. We hope to demonst…
I define higher codimensional versions of contact structures on manifolds as maximally non-integrable distributions. I call them multicontact structures. Cartan distributions on jet spaces provide canonical examples. More generally, I define higher codimensional versions of pre-contact structures as distributions on manifolds whose characteristic symmetries span a constant dimensional distribution. I call them pre-multicontact structures. Every distribution is almost everywhere, locally, a pre-multicontact structure. After showing that the standard symplectization of contact manifolds generali…
With the covariant formulation in hand from the first paper of this series (physics/9801019), we begin in this second paper to study the canonical (or ``instantaneous'') formulation of classical field theories. The canonical formluation works with fields defined as time-evolving cross sections of bundles over a Cauchy surface, rather than as sections of bundles over spacetime as in the covariant formulation. In Chapter 5 we begin to relate these approaches to classical field theory; in particular, we show how covariant multisymplectic geometry induces the instantaneous symplectic geometry of c…
