In this paper the notion of Tulczyjew's triples in classical mechanics is extended to classical field theories, using the so-called multisymplectic formalism, and a convenient notion of lagrangian submanifold in multisymplectic geometry. Accordingly, the dynamical equations are interpreted as the local equations defining these lagrangian submanifolds.
In the scientific literature there are basically two schools of formulating Lagrangian (or Hamiltonian) mechanics in the (Lie) algebroid setting: in terms of prolongations and in terms of Tulczyjew triples. Despite the fact that in both approaches we describe the same phenomena, so far no comparison between prolongations and Tulczyjew triples was made. In this note we aim to fill this gap. More precisely, we will strip the prolongation approach to uncover the Tulczyjew triple reality hidden inside, thus proving that the latter approach is a more basic one.
Tulczyjew triple for physical systems with configuration manifold equipped with Lie group structure is constructed and discussed. The case of systems invariant with respect to group acton is considered together with appropriate reduction of the Tulczyjew triple. The theory is applied to free rigid-body dynamics.
In this article we construct and discuss a new rigorous geometric formalism for gauge field theories. The basis of our work is the notion of the Tulczyjew triple, a geometric structure which successfully solved numerous problems in mathematical description of mechanics and classical field theory. In particular, we construct a Tulczyjew triple for gauge field theories and reduce it for systems that depend only on the value of a connection and curvature instead of the entire first jet of the gauge field. We also introduce new geometric structures such as the vector-affine product of bundles and …
We are proposing Tulczyjew's triple for contact dynamics. The most important ingredients of the triple, namely symplectic diffeomorphisms, special symplectic manifolds, and Morse families, are generalized to the contact framework. These geometries permit us to determine so-called generating family (obtained by merging a special contact manifold and a Morse family) for a Legendrian submanifold. Contact Hamiltonian and Lagrangian Dynamics are recast as Legendrian submanifolds of the tangent contact manifold. In this picture, the Legendre transformation is determined to be a passage between two d…
Around mid-1970s W. M. Tulczyjew discovered an approach which brings the two formalisms under a common geometric roof: the dynamics of a particle with configuration space $X$ is determined by a Lagrangian submanifold $D$ of $TT^*X$ (the total tangent space of $T^*X$), and the description of $D$ by its Hamiltonian $H$: $T^*X\to \mathbb R$ (resp. its Lagrangian $L$: $TX\to\mathbb R$) yields the Hamilton (resp. Euler-Lagrange) equation. It is reported here that Tulczyjew's approach also works for the dynamics of (charged) particles in gauge fields, in which the role of the total cotangent space $…
In this paper we consider a class of static spacetimes in higher dimensional ($D \ge 4$) scalar-torsion theories with non-minimal derivative coupling and the scalar potential turned on. The spacetime is conformal to a product space of a two-surface and a $(D-2)$-dimensional submanifold. Analyzing the equations of motion in the theory we find that the $(D-2)$-dimensional submanifold has to admit constant triplet structures in which the torsion scalar is one of them. This implies that these equations of motion can be simplified into a single highly non-linear ordinary differential equation calle…
