It is a well-known result of Auslander and Reiten that contravariant finiteness of the class $\mathcal{P}^{\mathrm{fin}}_\infty$ (of finitely generated modules of finite projective dimension) over an Artin algebra is a sufficient condition for validity of finitistic dimension conjectures. Motivated by the fact that finitistic dimensions of an algebra can alternatively be computed by Gorenstein projective dimension, in this work we examine the Gorenstein counterpart of Auslander--Reiten condition, namely contravariant finiteness of the class $\mathcal{GP}^{\mathrm{fin}}_\infty$ (of finitely generated modules of finite Gorenstein projective dimension), and its relation to validity of finitistic dimension conjectures. It is proved that contravariant finiteness of the class $\mathcal{GP}^{\mathrm{fin}}_\infty$ implies validity of the second finitistic dimension conjecture over left artinian rings. In the more special setting of Artin algebras, however, it is proved that the Auslander--Reiten sufficient condition and its Gorenstein counterpart are virtually equivalent in the sense that contravariant finiteness of the class $\mathcal{GP}^{\mathrm{fin}}_\infty$ implies contravariant finiteness of the class $\mathcal{P}^{\mathrm{fin}}_\infty$ over any Artin algebra, and the converse holds for Artin algebras over which the class $\mathcal{GP}^{\mathrm{fin}}_0$ (of finitely generated Gorenstein projective modules) is contravariantly finite.
Let $A$ be an Artin algebra, $M$ be a Gorenstein projective $A$-module and $B =$ End$_A M$, then $M$ is a $A$-$B$-bimodule. We use the restricted flat dimension of $M_B$ to give a characterization of the homological dimensions of $A$ and $B$, and obtain the following main results: (1) if $A$ is a CM-finite algebra with $\cal GP$($A$) = add$_AE$ and fin.dim $A \geq 2,$ then ${\rm fin.dim}\ B \leq {\rm fin.dim}\ A + {\rm rfd}(M_B) +{\rm pd}_B{\rm Hom}_A(M, E);$ (2) If $A$ is a CM-finite $n$-Gorenstein algebra with $\cal GP$($A$) = add$_AE$ and $n \geq 2$, then gl.dim $B \leq n + {\rm pd}_B{\rm H…
We prove that the finitistic dimension conjecture, the Gorenstein Symmetry Conjecture, the Wakamatsu-tilting conjecture and the generalized Nakayama conjecture hold for artin algebras which can be realized as endomorphism algebras of modules over representation-finite algebras. Note it is a question whether or not all artin algebras have such realizations. It was also shown that if every quasi-hereditary algebras has a left idealized extension which is a monomial algebra or an algebra whose representation dimension is not more than 3, then the finitistic dimension conjecture holds.
Recently, Chen and Koenig in \cite{CheKoe} and Iyama and Solberg in \cite{IyaSol} independently introduced and characterised algebras with dominant dimension coinciding with the Gorenstein dimension and both dimensions being larger than or equal to two. In \cite{IyaSol}, such algebras are named Auslander-Gorenstein algebras. Auslander-Gorenstein algebras generalise the well known class of higher Auslander algebras, where the dominant dimension additionally coincides with the global dimension. In this article we generalise Auslander-Gorenstein algebras further to algebras having the property th…
We show that an artin algebra having at most three radical layers of infinite projective dimension has finite finitistic dimension, generalizing the known result for algebras with vanishing radical cube.
We apply the theory of cotorsion pairs to study closure properties of classes of modules with finite projective dimension with respect to direct limit operations and to filtrations. We also prove that if the ring is an order in an $\aleph_0$-noetherian ring Q of small finitistic dimension 0, then the cotorsion pair generated by the modules of projective dimension at most one is of finite type if and only if Q has big finitistic dimension 0. This applies, for example, to semiprime Goldie rings and Cohen Macaulay noetherian commutative rings.
An A-module M will be said to be semi-Gorenstein-projective provided that Ext^i(M,A) = 0 for all i > 0. All Gorenstein-projective modules are semi-Gorenstein-projective and only few and quite complicated examples of semi-Gorenstein-projective modules which are not Gorenstein-projective have been known. The aim of the paper is to provide conditions on A such that all semi-Gorenstein-projective modules are Gorenstein-projective (we call such an algebra left weakly Gorenstein). In particular, we show that in case there are only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable left modules whic…
In this article we investigate the relations between the Gorenstein projective dimensions of $Λ$-modules and their socles for minimal n-Auslander-Gorenstein algebras $Λ$ in the sense of Iyama and Solberg \cite{IS}. First we give a description of projective-injective $Λ$-modules in terms of their socles. Then we prove that a $Λ$-module $N$ has Gorenstein projective dimension at most n iff its socle has Gorenstein projective dimension at most n iff $N$ is cogenerated by a projective $Λ$-module. Furthermore, we show that minimal n-Auslander-Gorenstein algebras can be characterised by the relation…
We classify indecomposable non-projective Gorenstein-projective modules over a monomial algebra via the notion of perfect paths. We apply this classification to a quadratic monomial algebra and describe explicitly the stable category of its Gorenstein-projective modules.
We prove that a certain eventually homological isomorphism between module categories induces a triangle equivalence between their singularity categories, Gorenstein defect categories and the stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules. Further, we show that Auslander-Reiten conjecture and Gorenstein symmetry conjecture can be reduced by eventually homological isomorphisms. Applying the results to arrow removal and vertex removal, we describe the Gorenstein projective modules over some non-monomial algebras, and we verify the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for certain algebras.
An artin algebra $A$ is said to be CM-finite if there are only finitely many, up to isomorphisms, indecomposable finitely generated Gorenstein-projective $A$-modules. We prove that for a Gorenstein artin algebra, it is CM-finite if and only if every its Gorenstein-projective module is a direct sum of finitely generated Gorenstein-projective modules. This is an analogue of Auslander's theorem on algebras of finite representation type (\cite{A,A1}).
The aim of this note is to outline the structure of the category of the Gorenstein projective modules for a Nakayama algebra. We are going to introduce the resolution quiver of such an algebra. It provides a fast algorithm in order to obtain the Gorenstein projective modules and to decide whether the algebra is a Gorenstein algebra or not, and whether it is CM-free or not.
We generalize the monomorphism category from quiver (with monomial relations) to arbitrary finite dimensional algebras by a homological definition. Given two finite dimension algebras $A$ and $B$, we use the special monomorphism category Mon(B, A-Gproj) to describe some Gorenstein projective bimodules over the tensor product of $A$ and $B$. If one of the two algebras is Gorenstein, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for Mon(B, A-Gproj) being the category of all Gorenstein projective bimodules. In addition, If both $A$ and $B$ are Gorenstein, we can describe the category of all Gorens…
We introduce the notion of relative singularity category with respect to any self-orthogonal subcategory $ω$ of an abelian category. We introduce the Frobenius category of $ω$-Cohen-Macaulay objects, and under some reasonable conditions, we show that the stable category of $ω$-Cohen-Macaulay objects is triangle-equivalent to the relative singularity category. As applications, we relate the stable category of (unnecessarily finitely-generated) Gorenstein-projective modules with singularity categories of rings. We prove that for a Gorenstein ring, the stable category of Gorenstein-projective mod…
Let $Λ$ be an artin algebra and let $\mathcal{P}^{<\infty}_Λ$ the category of finitely generated right $Λ$-modules of finite projective dimension. We show that $\mathcal{P}^{<\infty}_Λ$ is contravariantly finite in $\rm mod\,Λ$ if and only if the direct sum $E$ of the indecomposable Ext-injective modules in $\mathcal{P}^{<\infty}_Λ$ form a tilting module in $\rm mod\,Λ$. Moreover, we show that in this case $E$ coincides with the direct sum of the minimal right $\mathcal{P}^{<\infty}_Λ$-approximations of the indecomposable $Λ$-injective modules and that the projective dimension of $E$ equal to …
In this paper we mainly study the homological properties of dual modules over $k$-Gorenstein rings. For a right quasi $k$-Gorenstein ring $Λ$, we show that the right self-injective dimension of $Λ$ is at most $k$ if and only if each $M \in$mod $Λ$ satisfying the condition that Ext$_Λ^i(M, Λ)=0$ for any $1\leq i \leq k$ is reflexive. For an $\infty$-Gorenstein ring, we show that the big and small finitistic dimensions and the self-injective dimension of $Λ$ are identical. In addition, we show that if $Λ$ is a left quasi $\infty$-Gorenstein ring and $M\in$mod $Λ$ with grade$M$ finite, then Ext$_…
Let $Λ$ be the path algebra of a finite quiver $Q$ over a finite-dimensional algebra $A$. Then $Λ$-modules are identified with representations of $Q$ over $A$. This yields the notion of monic representations of $Q$ over $A$. If $Q$ is acyclic, then the Gorenstein-projective $\m$-modules can be explicitly determined via the monic representations. As an application, $A$ is self-injective if and only if the Gorenstein-projective $\m$-modules are exactly the monic representations of $Q$ over $A$.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian category. For a pair $(\mathcal{X},\mathcal{Y}$ of classes of objects in $\mathcal{A},$ we define the weak and the $(\mathcal{X},\mathcal{Y})$-Gorenstein relative projective objects in $\mathcal{A}$. We point out that such objects generalize the usual Gorenstein projective objects and others generalizations appearing in the literature as Ding-projective, Ding-injective, $\mathcal{X}$-Gorenstein projective, Gorenstein AC-projective and $G_C$-projective modules and Cohen-Macaulay objects in abelian categories. We show that the principal results on Gorenstein proje…
Under semi-weak and weak compatibility of bimodules, we establish sufficient and necessary conditions of Gorenstein-projective modules over rings of Morita contexts with one bimodule homomorphism zero. This generalises and extends results on triangular matrix Artin algebras and on Artin algebras of Morita contexts with two bimodule homomorphisms zero in the literature, where only sufficient conditions are given under a strong assumption of compatibility of bimodules. An application is provided to describe Gorenstein-projective modules over noncommutative tensor products arising from Morita con…
Given an associative ring $A$, we present a new approach for establishing the finiteness of the big finitistic projective dimension $\operatorname{FPD}(A)$. The idea is to find a sufficiently nice non-positively graded differential graded ring $B$ such that $\mathrm{H}^0(B) = A$ and such that $\operatorname{FPD}(B) < \infty$. We show that one can always find such a $B$ provided that $A$ is noetherian and has a noncommutative dualizing complex. We then use the intimate relation between $\operatorname{\mathsf{D}}(B)$ and $\operatorname{\mathsf{D}}(\mathrm{H}^0(B))$ to deduce results about $\oper…
If A is an artin algebra, Gélinas has introduced an interesting upper bound for the finitistic dimension of A, namely the delooping level del A. We assert that for any Nakayama algebra, its finitistic dimension is equal to del A. This yields also a new proof that the finitistic dimension of A and of its opposite algebra are equal, as shown recently by Sen. If S is a simple module, let e(S) be the minimum of the projective dimension of S and of its injective envelope (one of these numbers has to be finite); and e*(S) the minimum of the injective dimension of S and of its projective cover. Then …
We consider a finite acyclic quiver $\mathcal{Q}$ and a quasi-Frobenius ring $R$. We endow the category of quiver representations over $R$ with a model structure, whose homotopy category is equivalent to the stable category of Gorenstein-projective modules over the path algebra $R\mathcal{Q}$. As an application, we then characterize Gorenstein-projective $R\mathcal{Q}$-modules in terms of the corresponding quiver $R$-representations; this generalizes a result obtained by Luo-Zhang to the case of not necessarily finitely generated $R\mathcal{Q}$-modules, and partially recover results due to Eno…
In this note, we prove that if $Λ$ is an Artin algebra with a simple module $S$ of finite projective dimension, then the finiteness of the finitistic dimension of $Λ$ implies that of $(1-e)Λ(1-e)$ where $e$ is the primitive idempotent supporting $S$. We derive some consequences of this. In particular, we recover a result of Green-Solberg-Psaroudakis: if $Λ$ is the quotient of a path algebra by an admissible ideal $I$ whose defining relations do not involve a certain arrow $α$, then the finitistic dimension of $Λ$ is finite if and only if the finitistic dimension of $Λ/ΛαΛ$ is finite.
The relation between the $n$-recollements of stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules and the virtual Gorensteinness of algebras are investigated. Let $A,B$, and $C$ be finite dimensional algebras. We prove that if the stable category of Gorenstein projective $A$-modules admits a $n$-recollement relative to that of $B$ and $C$ with $n\geq 2$, then $A$ is virtually Gorenstein if and only if so are $B$ and $C$.
Let A be an artin algebra. An A-module M is semi-Gorenstein-projective provided that Ext^i(M,A) = 0 for all i > 0. If M is Gorenstein-projective, then both M and its A-dual M* are semi-Gorenstein projective. As we have shown recently, the converse is not true, thus answering a question raised by Avramov and Martsinkovsky. The aim of the present note is to analyse in detail the modules M such that both M and M* are semi-Gorenstein-projective.
Let $R$ be a finite dimensional $k$-algebra over an algebraically closed field $k$ and $\mathrm{mod} R$ be the category of all finitely generated left $R$-modules. For a given full subcategory $\mathcal{X}$ of $\mathrm{mod} R,$ we denote by $\pfd \mathcal{X}$ the projective finitistic dimension of $\mathcal{X}.$ That is, $\pfd \mathcal{X}:=\mathrm{sup} \{\pd X : X\in\mathcal{X} \text{and} \pd X<\infty\}.$ \ It was conjectured by H. Bass in the 60's that the projective finitistic dimension $\pfd (R):=\pfd (\mathrm{mod} R)$ has to be finite. Since then, much work has been done toward the proof o…
We introduce the notion of a directed stratification for a finite-dimensional algebra. For algebras that admit such a stratification we characterise the projective resolutions of finitely generated modules and obtain a result for the finitistic dimension, which is an inductive version of a result of Fossum, Griffith and Reiten. With the developed techniques, which are adopted from the theory of EI-category algebras, we gain deeper insight in the combinatorial nature of this result. A characterisation of algebras which do not admit a directed stratification is given in terms of the Ext-quiver.
Let A be an Artin algebra and e an idempotent in A. It is an interesting topic to compare the homological dimension of the algebras A,A/AeA and eAe. For example, in [2], the relation among the global dimension of these algebras is discussed under the condition that AeA is a strongly idempotent ideal. Motivated by this, we try to compare the finitistic dimension of these algebras under certain homological conditions on AeA. In particular, under the condition that AeA is a strongly idempotent ideal with finite projective dimension, we prove that if the finitistic projective (or injective) dimens…
For a finite quiver without sources or sinks, we prove that the homotopy category of acyclic complexes of injective modules over the corresponding finite dimensional algebra with radical square zero is triangle equivalent to the derived category of the Leavitt path algebra viewed as a differential graded algebra with trivial differential, which is further triangle equivalent to the stable category of Gorenstein projective modules over the trivial extension algebra of a von Neumann regular algebra by an invertible bimodule. A related, but different, result for the homotopy category of acyclic c…
Let $A$ be an Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring. Enomoto conjectured that a self-orthogonal $A$-module has finite projective dimension. We prove this conjecture for $A$ having the property that every indecomposable non-projective maximal Cohen-Macaulay module is periodic. This answers a question of Enomoto and shows the conjecture for monomial quiver algebras and hypersurface rings.
We give a result of Auslander-Ringel-Tachikawa type for Gorenstein-projective modules over a complete Gorenstein order. In particular, we prove that a complete Gorenstein order is of finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type if and only if every indecomposable pure-injective object in the stable category of Gorenstein-projective modules is compact.
Given a finite dimensional algebra $Λ$, we show that a frequently satisfied finiteness condition for the category ${\cal P}^{\infty}(Λ\rm{-mod})$ of all finitely generated (left) $Λ$-modules of finite projective dimension, namely contravariant finiteness of ${\cal P}^{\infty}(Λ\rm{-mod})$ in $Λ\rm{-mod}$, forces arbitrary modules of finite projective dimension to be direct limits of objects in ${\cal P}^{\infty}(Λ\rm{-mod})$. Among numerous applications, this yields an encompassing sufficient condition for the validity of the first finitistic dimension conjecture, that is, for the little finit…
Let k be a field and q a non-zero element of k. In Part I, we have exhibited a 6-dimensional k-algebra A = A(q) and we have shown that if q has infinite multiplicative order, then A has a 3-dimensional local module which is semi-Gorenstein-projective, but not torsionless, thus not Gorenstein-projective. This Part II is devoted to a detailed study of all the 3-dimensional local A-modules for this particular algebra A. If q has infinite multiplicative order, we will encounter a whole family of 3-dimensional local modules which are semi-Gorenstein-projective, but not torsionless.
Invariants with respect to recollements of the stable category of Gorenstein projective A-modules over an algebra A and stable equivalences are investigated. Specifically, the Gorenstein rigidity dimension is introduced. It is shown that the Gorenstein rigidity dimension is invariant with respect to both Morita equivalences and the stable equivalences of Gorenstein projective modules. As a consequence, the Gorenstein rigidity dimension is shown the invariant of derived equivalences. The Gorenstein rigidity dimension is compared along the recollements of the stable category of Gorenstein projec…
We introduce the notions of Gorenstein projective $τ$-rigid modules, Gorenstein projective support $τ$-tilting modules and Gorenstein torsion pairs and give a Gorenstein analog to Adachi-Iyama-Reiten's bijection theorem on support $τ$-tilting modules. More precisely, for an algebra $Λ$, We prove that there is a bijection between the set of Gorenstein projective support $τ$-tilting modules and the set of functorially finite Gorenstein projective torsion classes. As an application, we introduce the notion of CM-$τ$-tilting finite algebras and show that $Λ$ is CM-$τ$-tilting finite if and only if…
In the paper, we mainly connect the Gorenstein derived equivalence and stable functors of Gorenstein projective modules. Specially, we prove that a Gorenstein derived equivalence between CM-finite algebras A and B can induce a stable functor between the factor categories A-mod/A-Gproj and B-mod\B-Gproj. Furthermore, the above stable functor is an equivalence when A and B are Gorenstein.
The category ${\rm gp}(Λ)$ of Gorenstein-projective modules over tensor algebra $Λ= A\otimes_kB$ can be described as the monomorphism category ${\rm mon}(B, {\rm gp}(A))$ of $B$ over ${\rm gp}(A)$. In particular, Gorenstein-projective $Λ$-modules are monic. In this paper, we find the similar relation between semi-Gorenstein-projective $Λ$-modules and $A$-modules, via monic modules, namely, ${\rm mon}(B, \ ^\perp A) = {\rm mon}(B, A)\cap \ ^\perp Λ.$ Using this, it is proved that if $A$ is weakly Gorenstein, then $Λ$ is weakly Gorenstein if and only each semi-Gorenstein-projective $Λ$-modules a…
Let $A$ be a coherent algebra and $B$ be a finite-dimensional Gorenstein algebra over a field $k$. We describe finitely presented Gorenstein projective $A\otimes_k B$-modules in terms of their underlying onesided modules. Moreover, if the global dimension of $B$ is finite, we give a more precise description of finitely presented Gorenstein projective $A\otimes_k B$-modules.
We study totally acyclic complexes of projective modules over triangular matrix rings and then use it to classify Gorenstein projective modules over such rings. We also use this classification to obtain some information concerning Cohen-Macaulay finite and virtually Gorenstein triangular matrix artin algebras.
In the paper, we investigate the lifting of recollements with respect to Gorenstein-projective modules. Specifically, a homological ring epimorphism can induce a lifting of the recollement of the stable category of finitely generated Gorenstein-projective modules; the recollement of the bounded Gorenstein derived categories of some upper triangular matrix algebras can be lifted to the homotopy category of Gorenstein-projective modules. As a byproduct, we give a sufficient and necessary condition on the upper triangular matrix algebra T_{n}(A) to be of finite CM-type for an algebra A of finite …
For a finite free and projective EI category, we prove that Gorenstein-projective modules over its category algebra are closed under the tensor product if and only if each morphism in the given category is a monomorphism.
(Partial) Gorenstein silting modules are introduced and investigated. It is shown that for finite dimensional algebras of finite CM-type, partial Gorenstein silting modules are in bijection with τ_G-rigid modules; Gorenstein silting modules are the module-theoretic counterpart of 2-term Gorenstein silting complexes; and the relation between 2-term Gorenstein silting complexes, t-structures and torsion pairs in module categories. Furthermore, the corresponding version of the classical Brenner-Butler theorem in this setting are characterised; and the upper bound of the global dimension of endomo…
We give a construction of Gorenstein projective $τ$-tilting modules in terms of tensor products of modules. As a consequence, we give a class of non-self-injective algebras admitting non-trivial Gorenstein projective $τ$-tilting modules. Moreover, we show that a finite dimensional algebra $Λ$ over an algebraically closed field is $CM$-$τ$-tilting finite if $T_n(Λ)$ is $CM$-$τ$-tilting finite which gives a partial answer to a question on $CM$-$τ$-tilting finite algebras posed by Xie and Zhang.
For any cyclic Nakayama algebra $Λ$, we construct \emph{syzygy filtered algebra} $\bm\varepsilon(Λ)$ which corresponds to various syzygy modules as the name suggests. We prove that the category of modules over the syzygy filtered algebra $\bm\varepsilon(Λ)$ is equivalent to the wide subcategory cogenerated by projective-injective modules of the original algebra $Λ$ along with other categorical equivalences. In terms of this new algebra, we interpret the following homological invariants of $Λ$: left and right finitistic dimension, left and right $φ$-dimension, Gorenstein dimension, dominant dim…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of excellent extension of rings. Let $Γ$ be an excellent extension of an artin algebra $Λ$, we prove that $Λ$ satisfies the Gorenstein symmetry conjecture (resp. finitistic dimension conjecture, Auslander-Gorenstein conjecture, Nakayama conjecture) if and only if so does $Γ$. As a special case of excellent extensions, if $G$ is a finite group whose order is invertible in $Λ$ acting on $Λ$ and $Λ$ is $G$-stable, we prove that if the skew group algebras $ΛG$ satisfies strong Nakayama conjecture (resp. generalized Nakayama conjecture), then so does $Λ$.
It is shown that a 4-recollement of derived categories of CM-finite algebras induces a 2-recollement of the corresponding Cohen-Macaulay Auslander algebras, which generalises the main theorem of Pan [S. Y. Pan, Derived equivalences for Cohen-Macaulay Auslander algebras, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 216 (2012), 355{363]. Moreover, both Auslander- Reiten conjecture and Gorenstein projective conjecture are shown invariant under 3 (or 4)-recollement of unbounded derived categories of algebras.
In this paper, we first study the Gorenstein projective/flat dimension of complexes of modules. The relation between the Gorenstein projective/flat dimension for complexes and that for modules are investigated. Then we study Tate, stable and unbounded homology for complexes of modules. In the case of module arguments, we get some results that improve the known results.
From certain triangle functors, called non-negative functors, between the bounded derived categories of abelian categories with enough projective objects, we introduce their stable functors which are certain additive functors between the stable categories of the abelian categories. The construction generalizes a previous work by Hu and Xi. We show that the stable functors of non-negative functors have nice exactness property and are compatible with composition of functors. This allows us to compare conveniently the homological properties of objects linked by the stable functors. Particularly, …
We prove that any faithful Frobenius functor between abelian categories preserves the Gorenstein projective dimension of objects. Consequently, it preserves and reflects Gorenstein projective objects. We give conditions on when a Frobenius functor preserves the stable categories of Gorenstein projective objects, the singularity categories and the Gorenstein defect categories, respectively. In the appendix, we give a direct proof of the following known result: for an abelian category with enough projectives and injectives, its global Gorenstein projective dimension coincides with its global Gor…
