If A is an artin algebra, Gélinas has introduced an interesting upper bound for the finitistic dimension of A, namely the delooping level del A. We assert that for any Nakayama algebra, its finitistic dimension is equal to del A. This yields also a new proof that the finitistic dimension of A and of its opposite algebra are equal, as shown recently by Sen. If S is a simple module, let e(S) be the minimum of the projective dimension of S and of its injective envelope (one of these numbers has to be finite); and e*(S) the minimum of the injective dimension of S and of its projective cover. Then the finitistic dimension of A is the maximum of the numbers e(S) as well as the maximum of the numbers e^*(S).
Using suitable syzygy modules, we construct a permutation h of the simple modules S such that e*(h(S)) = e(S). In particular, this shows for any natural number z, that the number of simple modules S with e(S) = z is equal to the number of simple modules S' with e(S') = z.
We give another proof of the recent result of Ringel, which asserts equality between the finitistic dimension and delooping level of Nakayama algebras. The main tool is syzygy filtration method introduced in \cite{sen2019}. In particular, we give characterization of the finitistic dimension one Nakayama algebras.
For any cyclic Nakayama algebra $Λ$, we construct \emph{syzygy filtered algebra} $\bm\varepsilon(Λ)$ which corresponds to various syzygy modules as the name suggests. We prove that the category of modules over the syzygy filtered algebra $\bm\varepsilon(Λ)$ is equivalent to the wide subcategory cogenerated by projective-injective modules of the original algebra $Λ$ along with other categorical equivalences. In terms of this new algebra, we interpret the following homological invariants of $Λ$: left and right finitistic dimension, left and right $φ$-dimension, Gorenstein dimension, dominant dim…
Let $A$ be a Nakayama algebra with $n$ simple modules and a simple module $S$ of even projective dimension $m$. Choose $m$ minimal such that a simple $A$-module with projective dimension $2m$ exists, then we show that the global dimension of $A$ is bounded by $n+m-1$. This gives a combined generalisation of results of Gustafson \cite{Gus} and Madsen \cite{Mad}. In \cite{Bro}, Brown proved that the global dimension of quasi-hereditary Nakayama algebras with $n$ simple modules is bounded by $n$. Using our result on the bounds of global dimensions of Nakayama algebras, we give a short new proof o…
We prove that the finitistic dimension conjecture, the Gorenstein Symmetry Conjecture, the Wakamatsu-tilting conjecture and the generalized Nakayama conjecture hold for artin algebras which can be realized as endomorphism algebras of modules over representation-finite algebras. Note it is a question whether or not all artin algebras have such realizations. It was also shown that if every quasi-hereditary algebras has a left idealized extension which is a monomial algebra or an algebra whose representation dimension is not more than 3, then the finitistic dimension conjecture holds.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of excellent extension of rings. Let $Γ$ be an excellent extension of an artin algebra $Λ$, we prove that $Λ$ satisfies the Gorenstein symmetry conjecture (resp. finitistic dimension conjecture, Auslander-Gorenstein conjecture, Nakayama conjecture) if and only if so does $Γ$. As a special case of excellent extensions, if $G$ is a finite group whose order is invertible in $Λ$ acting on $Λ$ and $Λ$ is $G$-stable, we prove that if the skew group algebras $ΛG$ satisfies strong Nakayama conjecture (resp. generalized Nakayama conjecture), then so does $Λ$.
Let $A$ be an Artin algebra. We investigate subalgebras of $A$ with certain conditions and obtain some classes of algebras whose finitistic dimensions are finite.
EI categories can be thought of as amalgams of finite posets and finite groups and therefore the associated algebras are built up from incidence algebras and group algebras of finite groups. For this particular class of algebras we present a construction of an upper bound for the finitistic dimension which is due to Lueck.
In this survey we discuss the results on the finitistic dimension of various stratified algebras. We describe what is already known, present some recent estimates, and list some open problems.
For monomial special multiserial algebras, which in general are of wild representation type, we construct radical embeddings into algebras of finite representation type. As a consequence, we show that the representation dimension of monomial and self-injective special multiserial algebras is less or equal to three. This implies that the finitistic dimension conjecture holds for all special multiserial algebras.
We introduce the notion of a directed stratification for a finite-dimensional algebra. For algebras that admit such a stratification we characterise the projective resolutions of finitely generated modules and obtain a result for the finitistic dimension, which is an inductive version of a result of Fossum, Griffith and Reiten. With the developed techniques, which are adopted from the theory of EI-category algebras, we gain deeper insight in the combinatorial nature of this result. A characterisation of algebras which do not admit a directed stratification is given in terms of the Ext-quiver.
We show that an artin algebra having at most three radical layers of infinite projective dimension has finite finitistic dimension, generalizing the known result for algebras with vanishing radical cube.
Recently, Chen and Koenig in \cite{CheKoe} and Iyama and Solberg in \cite{IyaSol} independently introduced and characterised algebras with dominant dimension coinciding with the Gorenstein dimension and both dimensions being larger than or equal to two. In \cite{IyaSol}, such algebras are named Auslander-Gorenstein algebras. Auslander-Gorenstein algebras generalise the well known class of higher Auslander algebras, where the dominant dimension additionally coincides with the global dimension. In this article we generalise Auslander-Gorenstein algebras further to algebras having the property th…
Let $\cQ$ be a quiver and $K$ a field. We study the interrelationship of homological properties of algebras associated to convex subquivers of $\cQ$ and quotients of the path algebra $K\cQ$. We introduce the homological heart of $\cQ$ which is a particularly nice convex subquiver of $\cQ$. For any algebra of the form $K\cQ/I$, the algebra associated to $K\cQ/I$ and the homological heart have similar homological properties. We give an application showing that the finitistic dimension conjecture need only be proved for algebras with path connected quivers.
In this paper we study right $n$-Nakayama algebras. Right $n$-Nakayama algebras appear naturally in the study of representation-finite algebras. We show that an artin algebra $Λ$ is representation-finite if and only if $Λ$ is right $n$-Nakayama for some positive integer $n$. We classify hereditary right $n$-Nakayama algebras. We also define right $n$-coNakayama algebras and show that an artin algebra $Λ$ is right $n$-coNakayama if and only if $Λ$ is left $n$-Nakayama. We then study right $2$-Nakayama algebras. We show how to compute all the indecomposable modules and almost split sequences ove…
We give new improved bounds for the dominant dimension of Nakayama algebras and use those bounds to give a classification of Nakayama algebras with $n$ simple modules that are higher Auslander algebras with global dimension at least $n$. The classification is then used to extend the results on the inequality for the global dimension of Nakayama algebras obtained in \cite{MM}.
We determine the derived representation type of Nakayama algebras and prove that a derived tame Nakayama algebra without simple projective module is gentle or derived equivalent to some skewed-gentle algebra, and as a consequence, we determine its singularity category.
Optimal upper bounds are provided for the dominant dimensions of Nakayama algebras and more generally algebras $A$ with an idempotent $e$ such that there is a minimal faithful injective-projective module $eA$ and such that $eAe$ is a Nakayama algebra. This answers a question of Abrar and proves a conjecture of Yamagata for monomial algebras.
The magnitude for algebras is a generalization of the Euler characteristic. We investigate the magnitude for Nakayama algebras. Using Ringel's resolution quiver, the existence and the value of rational magnitude is given. As a result, we show that the finite global dimension criteria for Nakayama algebras of Madsen and the first author are equivalent.
In this note, we prove that if $Λ$ is an Artin algebra with a simple module $S$ of finite projective dimension, then the finiteness of the finitistic dimension of $Λ$ implies that of $(1-e)Λ(1-e)$ where $e$ is the primitive idempotent supporting $S$. We derive some consequences of this. In particular, we recover a result of Green-Solberg-Psaroudakis: if $Λ$ is the quotient of a path algebra by an admissible ideal $I$ whose defining relations do not involve a certain arrow $α$, then the finitistic dimension of $Λ$ is finite if and only if the finitistic dimension of $Λ/ΛαΛ$ is finite.
Over a finite-dimensonal algbera $A$, simple $A$-modules that have projective dimension one have special properties. For example, Geigle-Lenzing studied them in connection to homological epimorphisms of rings, and they have also appeared in work concerning the finitistic dimension conjecture. If we however work in a $d$-cluster-tilting subcategory, then not all simples are contained in this subcategory. In this context, a replacement might be to work with idempotent ideals instead, and utilise the theory of Auslander-Platzeck-Todorov. We introduce the notion of a fabric idempotent as an analog…
We describe the combinatorics of the cell structure of the tensor category of bimodules over a radical square zero Nakayama algebra. This accounts to an explicit description of left, right, and two-sided cells.
An artin algebra A is said to be a higher Auslander algebra provided the global dimension and the dominant dimension coincide. We say that a linear Nakayama algebra is monotone, provided its Kupisch series first increases, then decreases. We are going to classify the monotone Nakayama algebras which are higher Auslander algebras. Let us stress that the classification strongly depends on the parity of the global dimension of A.
Using the resolution quiver for a connected Nakayama algebra, a fast algorithm is given to decide whether its global dimension is finite or not and whether it is Gorenstein or not. The latter strengthens a result of Ringel.
Let $H$ be a finite-dimensional weak Hopf algebra over a field $k$ and $A/B$ be a right faithfully flat weak $H$-Galois extension. We prove that if the finitistic dimension of $B$ is finite, then it is less than or equal to that of $A$. Moreover, suppose that $H$ is semisimple. If the finitistic dimension conjecture holds, then the finitistic dimension of $B$ is equal to that of $A$.
Recently, we obtained in [7] a new characterization for an orthogonal system to be a simple-minded system in the stable module category of any representation-finite self-injective algebra. In this paper, we apply this result to give an explicit construction of simple-minded systems over self-injective Nakayama algebras.
Let $A$ be an Artin algebra, $M$ be a Gorenstein projective $A$-module and $B =$ End$_A M$, then $M$ is a $A$-$B$-bimodule. We use the restricted flat dimension of $M_B$ to give a characterization of the homological dimensions of $A$ and $B$, and obtain the following main results: (1) if $A$ is a CM-finite algebra with $\cal GP$($A$) = add$_AE$ and fin.dim $A \geq 2,$ then ${\rm fin.dim}\ B \leq {\rm fin.dim}\ A + {\rm rfd}(M_B) +{\rm pd}_B{\rm Hom}_A(M, E);$ (2) If $A$ is a CM-finite $n$-Gorenstein algebra with $\cal GP$($A$) = add$_AE$ and $n \geq 2$, then gl.dim $B \leq n + {\rm pd}_B{\rm H…
If a Nakayama algebra is not cyclic, it has finite global dimension. For a cyclic Nakayama algebra, there are many characterizations of when it has finite global dimension. In [She17], Shen gave such a characterization using Ringel's resolution quiver. In [IZ92], the second author, with Zacharia, gave a cyclic homology characterization for when a monomial relation algebra has finite global dimension. We show directly that these criteria are equivalent for all Nakayama algebras. Our comparison result also reproves both characterizations. In a separate paper we discuss an interesting example tha…
Let $A$ be a Nakayama algebra. We give a description of the singularity category of $A$ inside its stable module category. We prove that there is a duality between the singularity category of $A$ and the singularity category of its opposite algebra. As a consequence, the resolution quiver of $A$ and the resolution quiver of its opposite algebra have the same number of cycles and the same number of cyclic vertices.
We prove that any cyclic Nakayama algebra which is a higher Auslander algebra can be uniquely constructed from Nakayama algebras of smaller ranks by reversing the syzygy filtration process. This creates chains of higher Auslander algebras upto $\boldsymbol\varepsilon$-equivalences. Therefore, the classification of all cyclic Nakayama algebras which are higher Auslander algebras reduces to the classification of linear ones. We give two applications of this: for any integer $k$ where $2\leq k\leq 2n-2$, there is a Nakayama algebra of rank $n$ which is a higher Auslander algebra of global dimensi…
Let $R$ be a finite dimensional $k$-algebra over an algebraically closed field $k$ and $\mathrm{mod} R$ be the category of all finitely generated left $R$-modules. For a given full subcategory $\mathcal{X}$ of $\mathrm{mod} R,$ we denote by $\pfd \mathcal{X}$ the projective finitistic dimension of $\mathcal{X}.$ That is, $\pfd \mathcal{X}:=\mathrm{sup} \{\pd X : X\in\mathcal{X} \text{and} \pd X<\infty\}.$ \ It was conjectured by H. Bass in the 60's that the projective finitistic dimension $\pfd (R):=\pfd (\mathrm{mod} R)$ has to be finite. Since then, much work has been done toward the proof o…
Birge Huisgen-Zimmermann calls a finite dimensional algebra homologically tame provided the little and the big finitistic dimension are equal and finite. The question formulated in the title has been discussed by her in the paper "Representation-tame algebras need not be homologically tame", by looking for any $r > 0$ at a sequence of algebras $Λ_m$ with big finitistic dimension $r+m$. As we will show, also the little finitistic dimension of $Λ_m$ is r+m. It follows that contrary to her assertion, all her algebras $Λ_m$ are homologically tame.
Iwahori-Hecke algebras for the infinite series of complex reflection groups $G(r,p,n)$ were constructed recently in the work of Ariki and Koike, Broué and Malle, and Ariki. In this paper we give Murnaghan-Nakayama type formulas for computing the irreducible characters of these algebras. Our method is a generalization of that in our earlier paper in which we derived Murnaghan-Nakayama rules for the characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of the classical Weyl groups. In both papers we have been motivated by C. Greene, who gave a new derivation of the Murnaghan-Nakayama formula for irreducible …
$n\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategories are an ideal setting for higher dimensional Auslander-Reiten theory. We give a complete classification of $n\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategories of module categories of Nakayama algebras. In particular, we show that there are three kinds of Nakayama algebras that admit $n\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategories: finite global dimension, selfinjective and non-Iwanaga-Gorenstein. Only the selfinjective ones can admit more than one $n\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory. It has been shown by the second author, that each such $n\mathbb{Z}$-clust…
K. Igusa and G. Todorov introduced the $φ$ function which generalizes the notion of projective dimension. We study the behavior of the $φ$ function for cyclic Nakayama algebras of infinite global dimension. We prove that the supremum of values of $φ$ is always an even number. In particular we show that the $φ$-dimension is $2$ if and only if the algebra satisfies certain symmetry conditions. Also we give a sharp upper bound for $φ$-dimension in terms of the number of monomial relations which describes the algebra.
We study the relation between simple-minded systems and two-term tilting complexes for self-injective Nakayama algebras. More precisely, we show that any simple-minded system of a self-injective Nakayama algebra is the image of the set of simple modules under a stable equivalence, which is given by the restriction of a standard derived equivalence induced by a two-term tilting complex. We achieve this by exploiting and connecting the mutation theories from the combinatorics of Brauer tree, configurations of stable translations quivers of type A, and triangulations of a punctured convex regular…
We investigate the inequality ${\rm Findim}\ \! Λ^{op} \leq {\rm dell}\ \! Λ$ between the finitistic dimension and the delooping level of an Artin algebra $Λ$, and whether equality holds in general. We prove that equality ${\rm Findim}\ \! Λ^{op} = {\rm dell}\ \! Λ$ always holds for Artin algebras with radical square zero.
In this paper we investigate the incidence algebras arising from one-branch extensions of "rectangles". There are four different ways to form such extensions, and all four kinds of incidence algebras turn out to be derived equivalent. We provide realizations for all of them by tilting complexes in a Nakayama algebra. As an application, we obtain the explicit formulas of the Coxeter polynomials for a half of Nakayama algebras (i.e., the Nakayama algebras $N(n,r)$ with $2r\geq n+2$). Meanwhile, an unexpected derived equivalence between Nakayama algebras $N(2r-1,r)$ and $N(2r-1,r+1)$ has been fou…
Let $Λ$ be an artin algebra and let $\mathcal{P}^{<\infty}_Λ$ the category of finitely generated right $Λ$-modules of finite projective dimension. We show that $\mathcal{P}^{<\infty}_Λ$ is contravariantly finite in $\rm mod\,Λ$ if and only if the direct sum $E$ of the indecomposable Ext-injective modules in $\mathcal{P}^{<\infty}_Λ$ form a tilting module in $\rm mod\,Λ$. Moreover, we show that in this case $E$ coincides with the direct sum of the minimal right $\mathcal{P}^{<\infty}_Λ$-approximations of the indecomposable $Λ$-injective modules and that the projective dimension of $E$ equal to …
In this paper, we construct derived equivalences between matrix subrings. As applications, we calculate the global dimensions and the finitistic dimensions of some matrix subrings. And we show that the finitistic dimension conjecture holds for a class of Harada algebras and a class of tiled triangular algebras.
Let A be an Artin algebra and e an idempotent in A. It is an interesting topic to compare the homological dimension of the algebras A,A/AeA and eAe. For example, in [2], the relation among the global dimension of these algebras is discussed under the condition that AeA is a strongly idempotent ideal. Motivated by this, we try to compare the finitistic dimension of these algebras under certain homological conditions on AeA. In particular, under the condition that AeA is a strongly idempotent ideal with finite projective dimension, we prove that if the finitistic projective (or injective) dimens…
Let $Λ$ be a finite dimensional algebra and $G$ be a finite group whose elements act on $Λ$ as algebra automorphisms. Under the assumption that $Λ$ has a complete set $E$ of primitive orthogonal idempotents, closed under the action of a Sylow $p$-subgroup $S \leqslant G$. If the action of $S$ on $E$ is free, we show that the skew group algebra $ΛG$ and $Λ$ have the same finitistic dimension, and have the same strong global dimension if the fixed algebra $Λ^S$ is a direct summand of the $Λ^S$-bimodule $Λ$. Using a homological characterization of piecewise hereditary algebras proved by Happel an…
We consider the question of whether the injective modules generate the unbounded derived category of a ring as a triangulated category with arbitrary coproducts. We give an example of a non-Noetherian commutative ring where they don't, but prove that they do for any Noetherian commutative ring. For non-commutative finite dimensional algebras the question is open, and we prove that if injectives generate for such an algebra, then the finitistic dimension conjecture holds for that algebra.
In this paper we study the category of finitely generated modules over a right $3$-Nakayama artin algebra. First we give a characterization of right $3$-Nakayama artin algebras and then we give a complete list of non-isomorphic finitely generated indecomposable modules over any right $3$-Nakayama artin algebra. Also we compute all almost split sequences for the class of right $3$-Nakayama artin algebras. Finally, we classify finite dimensional right $3$-Nakayama algebras in terms of their quivers with relations.
