Iwahori-Hecke algebras for the infinite series of complex reflection groups $G(r,p,n)$ were constructed recently in the work of Ariki and Koike, Broué and Malle, and Ariki. In this paper we give Murnaghan-Nakayama type formulas for computing the irreducible characters of these algebras. Our method is a generalization of that in our earlier paper in which we derived Murnaghan-Nakayama rules for the characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of the classical Weyl groups. In both papers we have been motivated by C. Greene, who gave a new derivation of the Murnaghan-Nakayama formula for irreducible symmetric group characters by summing diagonal matrix entries in Young's seminormal representations. We use the analogous representations of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of $G(r,p,n)$ given by Ariki and Koike.
We derive a Murnaghan--Nakayama type formula for the values of unipotent characters of finite classical groups on regular semisimple elements. This relies on Asai's explicit decomposition of Lusztig restriction. We use our formula to show that most complex irreducible characters vanish on some $\ell$-singular element for certain primes $\ell$. As an application we classify the simple endotrivial modules of the finite quasi-simple classical groups. As a further application we show that for finite simple classical groups and primes $\ell\ge3$ the first Cartan invariant in the principal $\ell$-bl…
The Murnaghan--Nakayama rule is a combinatorial rule for the character values of symmetric groups. We give a new combinatorial proof by explicitly finding the trace of the representing matrices in the standard basis of Specht modules. This gives an essentially bijective proof of the rule. A key lemma is an extension of a straightening result proved by the second author to skew-tableaux. Our module theoretic methods also give short proofs of Pieri's rule and Young's rule.
In this short note we give a new proof of the quantum generalization of Regev's theorems by applying the Murnaghan-Nakayama formula for skew characters of the generic Iwahori-Hecke algebra.
Given natural numbers m and n, we define a deflation map from the characters of the symmetric group S_{mn} to the characters of S_n. This map is obtained by first restricting a character of S_{mn} to the wreath product S_m \wr S_n, and then taking the sum of the irreducible constituents of the restricted character on which the base group S_m \times ... \times S_m acts trivially. We prove a combinatorial formula which gives the values of the images of the irreducible characters of S_{mn} under this map. We also prove an analogous result for more general deflation maps in which the base group is…
This article is concerned with perfect isometries between blocks of finite groups. Generalizing a method of Enguehard to show that any two p-blocks of (possibly different) symmetric groups with the same weight are perfectly isometric, we prove analogues of this result for p-blocks of alternating groups (where the blocks must also have the same sign when p is odd), of double covers of alternating and symmetric groups (for p odd, and where we obtain crossover isometries when the blocks have opposite signs),of complex reflection groups G(d,1,n) (for d prime to p), of Weyl groups of type B and D (…
For Iwahori-spherical representations of non-Archimedean general linear groups, Chan-Savin recently expressed the Whittaker functor as a restriction to an isotypic component of a finite Iwahori-Hecke algebra module. We generalize this method to describe principal degenerate Whittaker functors. Concurrently, we view Murnaghan's formula for the Harish-Chandra--Howe character as a Grothendieck group expansion of the same module. Comparing the two approaches through the lens of Zelevinsky's PSH-algebras, we obtain an explicit unitriangular transition matrix between coefficients of the character ex…
We use vertex operators to compute irreducible characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$. Two general formulas are given for the irreducible characters in terms of those of the symmetric groups or the Iwahori-Hecke algebras in lower degrees. Explicit formulas are derived for the irreducible characters labeled by hooks and two-row partitions. Using duality, we also formulate a determinant type Murnaghan-Nakayama formula and give another proof of Ram's combinatorial Murnaghan-Nakayama formula. As applications, we study super-characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra as well as the bitrac…
The Murnaghan-Nakayama rule is the classical formula for computing the character table of S_n. Y. Roichman has recently discovered a rule for the Kazhdan-Lusztig characters of q-Hecke algebras of type A, which can also be used for the character table of S_n. For each of the two rules, we give an algorithm for computing entries in the character table of S_n. We then analyze the computational complexity of the two algorithms, and in the case of characters indexed by partitions in the (k,l)-hook, compare their complexities to each other. It turns out that the algorithm based on the Murnaghan-Naka…
