We prove a criteria for uniform hyperbolicity based on the periodic points of the transformation. More precisely, if a mild (non uniform) hyperbolicity condition holds for the periodic points of any diffeomorphism in a residual subset of a $C^1$-open set $\SU$ then there exists an open and dense subset $\SA\subset \SU$ of Axiom A diffeomorphisms. Moreover, we also prove a noninvertible version of Ergodic Closing Lemma which we use to prove a counterpart of this result for local diffeomorphisms. As a simple corollary of our techniques, we have that an arbitrary $\mathrm{C}^1$-class local diffeomorphism $f$ of a closed manifold $M^n$ is uniformly expanding on the closure $\mathrm{Cl}_{M^n}(\mathrm{Per}(f))$ of its periodic point set $\mathrm{Per}(f)$, if it is nonuniformly expanding on $\mathrm{Per}(f)$.
Using quadratic forms, we stablish a criteria to relate the curvature of a Riemannian manifold and partial hyperbolicity of its geodesic flow. We show some examples which satisfy the criteria and another which does not satisfy it but still has a partially hyperbolic geodesic flow.
In this work we obtain a new criterion to establish ergodicity and non-uniform hyperbolicity of smooth measures of diffeomorphisms. This method allows us to give a more accurate description of certain ergodic components. The use of this criterion in combination with topological devices such as blenders lets us obtain global ergodicity and abundance of non-zero Lyapunov exponents in some contexts. In the partial hyperbolicity context, we obtain that stably ergodic diffeomorphisms are C^1-dense among volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with two-dimensional center bundle. This …
We prove that uniform hyperbolicity is invariant under topological conjugacy for dissipative polynomial automorphisms of C^2. Along the way we also show that a sufficient condition for hyperbolicity is that local stable and unstable manifolds of saddle points have uniform geometry.
We prove that, under a mild condition on the hyperbolicity of its periodic points, a map $g$ which is topologically conjugated to a hyperbolic map (respectively, an expanding map) is also a hyperbolic map (respectively, an expanding map). In particular, this result gives a partial positive answer for a question done by A. Katok, in a related context.
We prove that if the multipliers of the repelling periodic orbits of a complex polynomial grow at least like $n^{5 + ε}$, for some $ε> 0$, then the Julia set of the polynomial is locally connected when it is connected. As a consequence for a polynomial the presence of a Cremer cycle implies the presence of a sequence of repelling periodic orbits with "small" multipliers. Somehow surprinsingly the proof is based in measure theorical considerations.
We prove that for a polynomial diffeomorphism of C^2, uniform hyperbolicity on the set of saddle periodic points implies that saddle points are dense in the Julia set. In particular f satisfies Smale's Axiom A on C^2 .
We prove that, for $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms, if the periodic orbits contained in a homoclinic class $H(p)$ have all their Lyapunov exponents bounded away from 0, then $H(p)$ must be (uniformly) hyperbolic. This is in sprit of the works of the stability conjecture, but with a significant difference that the homoclinic class $H(p)$ is not known isolated in advance, hence the "weak" periodic orbits created by perturbations near the homoclinic class have to be guaranteed strictly inside the homoclinic class. In this sense the problem is of an "intrinsic" nature, and the classical proof of the…
In this paper we obtain two criteria of stable ergodicity outside the partially hyperbolic scenario. In both criteria, we use a weak form of hyperbolicity called chain-hyperbolicity. It is obtained one criterion for diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting and one criterion for weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. As an application of one of these criteria, we obtain the $C^1$-density of stable ergodicity inside a certain class of weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
We construct an explicit example of family of non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, at the boundary of the set of uniformly hyperbolic systems, with one orbit of cubic heteroclinic tangency. One of the leaves involved in this heteroclinic tangency is periodic, and there is a certain degree of freedom for the choice of the second one. For a non-countable set of choices, this leaf is not periodic and the diffeomorphism is Kupka-Smale: every periodic point is hyperbolic and the intersections of stable and unstable leaves of periodic points are transverse. As a consequence of our construction,…

In this paper, we show that, for scalar reaction-diffusion equations on the circle S1, the property of hyperbolicity of all equilibria and periodic orbits is generic with respect to the non-linearity . In other words, we prove that in an appropriate functional space of nonlinear terms in the equation, the set of functions, for which all equilibria and periodic orbits are hyperbolic, is a countable intersection of open dense sets. The main tools in the proof are the property of the lap number and the Sard-Smale theorem.
We prove exponential convergence to time-periodic states of the solutions of time-periodic Hamilton-Jacobi equations on the torus, assuming that the Aubry set is the union of a finite number of hyperbolic periodic orbits of the the Euler Lagrange flow. The period of limiting solutions is the least common multiple of the periods of the orbits in the Aubry set. This extends a result that we obtained in the autonomous case.
In this paper we revisit uniformly hyperbolic basic sets and the domination of Oseledets splittings at periodic points. We prove that periodic points with simple Lyapunov spectrum are dense in non-trivial basic pieces of Cr-residual diffeomorphisms on three-dimensional manifolds (r >= 1). In the case of the C1-topology we can prove that either all periodic points of a hyperbolic basic piece for a diffeomorphism f have simple spectrum C1- robustly (in which case f has a finest dominated splitting into one-dimensional sub-bundles and all Lyapunov exponent functions of f are continuous in the wea…
We prove that, for $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms, if a homoclinic class is not hyperbolic, then there is a non-hyperbolic ergodic measure supported on it. This proves a conjecture by Díaz and Gorodetski [28]. We also discuss the conjectured existence of periodic points with different stable dimension in the class.
Works of Liao, Mañé, Franks, Aoki and Hayashi characterized lack of hyperbolicity for diffeomorphisms by the existence of weak periodic orbits. In this note we announce a result which can be seen as a local version of these works: for C$^1$-generic diffeomorphism, a homoclinic class either is hyperbolic or contains a sequence of periodic orbits that have a Lyapunov exponent arbitrarily close to 0. Des travaux de Liao, Mañé, Franks, Aoki et Hayashi ont caractérisé le manque d'hyperbolicité des difféomorphismes par l'existence d'orbites périodiques faibles. Dans cette note, nous annonçons un rés…
We give an essentially equivalent formulation of the backward contracting property, defined by Juan Rivera-Letelier, in terms of expansion along the orbits of critical values, for complex polynomials of degree at least two which are at most finitely renormalizable and have only hyperbolic periodic points, as well as for all smooth interval maps with non-flat critical points.
Hayashi has extended a result of Mañé, proving that every diffeomorphism $f$ which has a $C^1$-neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$, where all periodic points of any $g\in\mathcal{U}$ are hyperbolic, it is an Axiom A diffeomorphism. Here, we prove the analogous result in the volume preserving scenario.
In this article we prove that if a flow exhibits a partially hyperbolic attractor and it has two periodic saddles with different indices, and the stable index of one of them coincides with the dimension of strongly stable bundles, then it does not satisfy the specification property. As an application, we prove that all Geometric Lorenz attractors do not satisfy the specification property.
We study $C^1$-generic vector fields on closed manifolds without points accumulated by periodic orbits of different indices and prove that they exhibit finitely many sinks and sectional-hyperbolic transitive Lyapunov stable sets with residual basin of attraction. This represents a partial positive answer to conjectures in \cite{am}, the Palis conjecture \cite{pa} and extend the Araujo's thesis to higher dimensions \cite{a}.
We prove that any vector field on a three-dimensional compact manifold can be approximated in the C1-topology by one which is singular hyperbolic or by one which exhibits a homoclinic tangency associated to a regular hyperbolic periodic orbit. This answers a conjecture by Palis. During the proof we obtain several other results with independent interest: a compactification of the rescaled sectional Poincaré flow and a generalization of Mañé-Pujals-Sambarino theorem for three-dimensional C2 vector fields with singularities.
This paper is an interval dynamics counterpart of three theories founded earlier by the authors, S. Smirnov and others in the setting of the iteration of rational maps on the Riemann sphere: the equivalence of several notions of non-uniform hyperbolicity, Geometric Pressure, and Nice Inducing Schemes methods leading to results in thermodynamical formalism. We work in a setting of generalized multimodal maps, that is smooth maps f of a finite union of compact intervals in R into R with non-flat critical points, such that on its maximal forward invariant set K the map f is topologically transiti…
In this article we introduce a gluing orbit property, weaker than specification, for both maps and flows. We prove that flows with the $C^1$-robust gluing orbit property are uniformly hyperbolic and that every uniformly hyperbolic flow satisfies the gluing orbit property. We also prove a level-1 large deviations principle and a level-2 large deviations lower bound for for semiflows with the gluing orbit property. As a consequence we establish a level-1 large deviations principle for hyperbolic flows and every continuous observable, and also a level-2 large deviations lower bound. Finally, sinc…
We consider four long-standing Rigidity Conjectures about synchrony and phase patterns for hyperbolic periodic orbits of admissible ODEs for networks. Proofs of stronger local versions of these conjectures, published in 2010-12, are now known to have a gap, but remain valid for a broad class of networks. Using different methods we prove local versions of the conjectures under a stronger condition, `strong hyperbolicity', which is related to a network analogue of the Kupka-Smale Theorem. Under this condition we also deduce global versions of the conjectures and an analogue of the $H/K$ Theorem …
We consider infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps with real critical exponent $α>1$ and combinatorial type which is monotone and satisfies a long return condition. For these combinatorial types we prove the existence of periodic points of the renormalization operator, and that each map in the limit set of renormalization has an associated unstable manifold. An unstable manifold defines a family of Lorenz maps and we prove that each infinitely renormalizable combinatorial type (satisfying the above conditions) has a unique representative within such a family. We also prove that each infinitely …
Let $(f_λ)_{λ\in Λ}$ be a holomorphic family of polynomial automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^2$. Following previous work of Dujardin and Lyubich, we say that such a family is weakly stable if saddle periodic orbits do not bifurcate. It is an open question whether this property is equivalent to structural stability on the Julia set $J^*$ (that is, the closure of the set of saddle periodic points). In this paper we introduce a notion of regular point for a polynomial automorphism, inspired by Pesin theory, and prove that in a weakly stable family, the set of regular points moves holomorphically. It f…

In this paper we establish a closing property and a hyperbolic closing property for thin trapped chain hyperbolic homoclinic classes with one dimensional center in partial hyperbolicity setting. Taking advantage of theses properties, we prove that the growth rate of the number of hyperbolic periodic points is equal to the topological entropy. We also obtain that the hyperbolic periodic measures are dense in the space of invariant measures.
These lecture notes focus on a recent result of Mike Hochman: an arbitrary standard Borel system can be embedded into a mixing Markov with equal entropy, respecting all invariant probability measures, with two exceptions: those carried by periodic orbits and those with maximal entropy. We discuss the corresponding notions of almost Borel embedding and isomorphism and universality. The main part of this paper is devoted to a self-contained and detailed proof of Hochman's theorem. We then explain how Katok's horseshoe theorem can be used to analyze diffeomorphisms with "enough" measures that are…
We consider inverse periodic shadowing properties of discrete dynamical systems generated by diffeomorphisms of closed smooth manifolds. We show that the $C^1$-interior of the set of all diffeomorphisms having so-called inverse periodic shadowing property coincides with the set of $Ω$-stable diffeomorphisms. The equivalence of Lipschitz inverse periodic shadowing property and hyperbolicity of the closure of all periodic points is proved. Besides, we prove that the set of all diffeomorphisms that have Lipschitz inverse periodic shadowing property and whose periodic points are dense in the nonwa…
We prove that a "positive probability" subset of the boundary of the set of hyperbolic (Axiom A) surface diffeomorphisms with no cycles $\mathcal{H}$ is constituted by Kupka-Smale diffeomorphisms: all periodic points are hyperbolic and their invariant manifolds intersect transversally. Lack of hyperbolicity arises from the presence of a tangency between a stable manifold and an unstable manifold, one of which is not associated to a periodic point. All these diffeomorphisms that we construct lie on the boundary of the same connected component of $\mathcal{H}$.
For diffeomorphisms or for non-singular flows, there are many results relating properties persistent under C1 perturbations and global structures for the dynamics ( such as hyperbolicity, partial hyperbolicity, dominated splitting). However, a difículty appears when a robust property of a flow holds on a set containing recurrent orbits accumulating a singular point. In [BdL] with Christan Bonatti we propose a a general procedure for adapting the usual hyperbolic structures to the singularities. In this paper, using this tool, we recover the results in [BDP] for flows, showing that robustly cha…
In this paper we deal with an invariant ergodic hyperbolic measure $μ$ for a diffeomorphism $f,$ assuming that $f$ it is either $C^{1+α}$ or $f$ is $C^1$ and the Oseledec splitting of $μ$ is dominated. We show that this system $(f,μ)$ satisfies a weaker and non-uniform version of specification, related with notions studied in several recent papers, including \cite{STV,Y, PS, T,Var, Oli}. Our main results have several consequences: as corollaries, we are able to improve the results about quantitative Poincaré recurrence, removing the assumption of the non-uniform specification property in the m…

In this paper we study Holder continuous linear cocycles over transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. Under various conditions of relative pinching we establish properties including existence and continuity of measurable invariant sub-bundles and conformal structures. We use these results to obtain criteria for cocycles to be isometric or conformal in terms of their periodic data. We show that if the return maps at the periodic points are, in a sense, conformal or isometric then so is the cocycle itself with respect to a Holder continuous Riemannian metric.
In this paper, we discuss delayed periodic dynamical systems, compare capability of criteria of global exponential stability in terms of various $L^{p}$ ($1\le p<\infty$) norms. A general approach to investigate global exponential stability in terms of various $L^{p}$ ($1\le p<\infty$) norms is given. Sufficient conditions ensuring global exponential stability are given, too. Comparisons of various stability criteria are given. More importantly, it is pointed out that sufficient conditions in terms of $L^{1}$ norm are enough and easy to implement in practice.
We study a single-species chemostat model with variable nutrient input and variable dilution rate with delayed (fixed) response in growth. The first goal of this article is to prove that persistence implies uniform persistence. Then we concentrate in the particular case with periodic nutrient input and same periodic dilution with delayed response in growth. We obtain a threshold for either the (uniform) persistence of the model or that the biomass of every solution tends to vanish. Furthermore, we prove that persistence is equivalent to the existence of a unique non-trivial periodic solution. …
We study the hyperbolicity of a class of horseshoes exhibiting an internal tangency, i.e. a point of homoclinic tangency accumulated by periodic points. In particular these systems are strictly not uniformly hyperbolic. However we show that all the Lyapunov exponents of all invariant measures are uniformly bounded away from 0. This is the first known example of this kind.
A holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ is post-critically algebraic if its critical hypersurfaces are periodic or preperiodic. This notion generalizes the notion of post-critically finite rational maps in dimension one. We will study the eigenvalues of the differential of such a map along a periodic cycle. When $n=1$, a well-known fact is that the eigenvalue along a periodic cycle of a post-critically finite rational map is either superattracting or repelling. We prove that when $n=2$ the eigenvalues are still either superattracting or repelling. This is an improvement of a result by Ma…
We study various aspects of periodic points for random substitution subshifts. In order to do so, we introduce a new property for random substitutions called the disjoint images condition. We provide a procedure for determining the property for compatible random substitutions-random substitutions for which a well-defined abelianisation exists. We find some simple necessary criteria for primitive, compatible random substitutions to admit periodic points in their subshifts. In the case that the random substitution further has disjoint images and is of constant length, we provide a stronger crite…
We show some level-2 large deviation principles for rational maps satisfying a strong form of non-uniform hyperbolicity, called "Topological Collet-Eckmann". More precisely, we prove a large deviation principle for the distribution of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. For this purpose we show that each H{ö}lder continuous potential admits a unique equilibrium state, and that the pressure function can be characterized in terms of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. Then we use a variant of a general result of Kifer.
We give criteria for the existence of bifurcations of symmetric periodic orbits in reversible Hamiltonian systems in terms of local equivariant Lagrangian Rabinowitz Floer homology. As an example, we consider the family of the direct circular orbits in the rotating Kepler problem and observe bifurcations of torus-type orbits. Our setup is motivated by numerical work of Hénon on Hill's lunar problem.
We introduce an algebraicity criteria. It has the following form: under certain conditions, an analytic subvariety of some algebriac variety over a global field $K$, if it contains many $K$-points, then it is algebraic over $K.$ This gives a way to show the transcendence of points via the transcendence of analytic subvarieties. Such a situation often appears when we have a dynamical system, because we can often produce infinitely many points from one point via iterates. Combing this criteria and the study of invariant subvarieties, we get some results on the transcendence in arithmetic dynamic…
