We study the hyperbolicity of a class of horseshoes exhibiting an internal tangency, i.e. a point of homoclinic tangency accumulated by periodic points. In particular these systems are strictly not uniformly hyperbolic. However we show that all the Lyapunov exponents of all invariant measures are uniformly bounded away from 0. This is the first known example of this kind.
We study some global aspects of the bifurcation of an equivariant family of volume-contracting vector fields on the three-dimensional sphere. When part of the symmetry is broken, the vector fields exhibit Bykov cycles. Close to the symmetry, we investigate the mechanism of the emergence of heteroclinic tangencies coexisting with transverse connections. We find persistent suspended horseshoes accompanied by attracting periodic trajectories with long periods.
This paper presents a mechanism for the coexistence of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics arising in a neighbourhood of a conservative Bykov cycle where trajectories turn in opposite directions near the two saddle-foci. We show that {within the class of divergence-free vector fields that preserve the cycle,} tangencies of the invariant manifolds of two hyperbolic saddle-foci densely occur. The global dynamics is persistently dominated by heteroclinic tangencies and by the existence of infinitely many elliptic points coexisting with suspended hyperbolic horseshoes. A generalized version of …
Let $f$ be a $C^r$$(r>1)$ diffeomorphism of a compact Riemannian manifold $M$, preserving an ergodic hyperbolic measure $μ$ with positive entropy, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Hölder continuous cocycle of injective bounded linear operators acting on a Banach space $X$. We prove that there is a sequence of horseshoes for $f$ and dominated splittings for $\mathcal{A}$ on the horseshoes, such that not only the measure theoretic entropy of $f$ but also the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathcal{A}$ with respect to $μ$ can be approximated by the topological entropy of $f$ and the Lyapunov exponents of $\mat…
Let $f$ be a $C^1$-diffeomorphism and $μ$ be a hyperbolic ergodic $f$-invariant Borel probability measure with positive measure-theoretic entropy. Assume that the Oseledec splitting $$T_xM=E_1(x) \oplus\cdots\oplus E_s(x) \oplus E_{s+1}(x) \oplus\cdots\oplus E_l(x) $$ is dominated on the Oseledec basin $Γ$. We give extensions of Katok's Horseshoes construction. Moreover there is a dominated splitting corresponding to Oseledec subspace on horseshoes.
The stable and unstable manifolds of a saddle fixed point (SFP) of the Bonhoeffer-van der Pol oscillator are numerically studied. A correspondence between the existence of homoclinic tangencies (whic are related to the creation or destruction of Smale horseshoes) and the chaos observed in the bifurcation diagram is described. It is observed that in the non-chaotic zones of the bifurcation diagram, there may or may not be Smale horseshoes, but there are no homoclinic tangencies.
We study the regularity of the entropy spectrum of the Lyapunov exponents for hyperbolic maps on surfaces. It is well-known that the entropy spectrum is a concave upper semi-continuous function which is analytic on the interior of the set Lyapunov exponents. In this paper we construct a family of horseshoes with a discontinuous entropy spectrum at the boundary of the set of Lyapunov exponents.
We study a partially hyperbolic and topologically transitive local diffeomorphism $F$ that is a skew-product over a horseshoe map. This system is derived from a homoclinic class and contains infinitely many hyperbolic periodic points of different indices and hence is not hyperbolic. The associated transitive invariant set $Λ$ possesses a very rich fiber structure, it contains uncountably many trivial and uncountably many non-trivial fibers. Moreover, the spectrum of the central Lyapunov exponents of $F|_Λ$ contains a gap and hence gives rise to a first order phase transition. A major part of t…
In this paper, we study two properties of the Lyapunov exponents under small perturbations: one is when we can remove zero Lyapunov exponents and the other is when we can distinguish all the Lyapunov exponents. The first result shows that we can perturb all the zero integrated Lyapunov exponents $\int_M λ_j(x)dω(x)$ into nonzero ones, for any partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism. The second part contains an example which shows the local genericity of diffeomorphisms with non-simple spectrum and three results: one discusses the relation between simple-spectrum property and the existence of compl…
This article concerns arbitrary finite heteroclinic networks in any phase space dimension whose vertices can be a random mixture of equilibria and periodic orbits. In addition, tangencies in the intersection of un/stable manifolds are allowed. The main result is a reduction to algebraic equations of the problem to find all solutions that are close to the heteroclinic network for all time, and their parameter values. A leading order expansion is given in terms of the time spent near vertices and, if applicable, the location on the non-trivial tangent directions. The only difference between a pe…
The set of transverse homoclinic intersections for a saddle-focus equilibrium in the planar equilateral restricted four-body problem admit certain simple homoclinic orbits which form the skeleton of the complete homoclinic intersection -- or homoclinic web. In the present work, the planar restricted four-body problem is viewed as an invariant subsystem of the spatial problem, and the influence of this planar homoclinic skeleton on the spatial dynamics is studied from a numerical point of view. Starting from the vertical Lyapunov families emanating from saddle focus equilibria, we compute the s…
This note presents a non-rigorous study of the linear response for an SRB (or `natural physical') measure $ρ$ of a diffeomorphism $f$ in the presence of tangencies of the stable and unstable manifolds of $ρ$. We propose that generically, if $ρ$ has no zero Lyapunov exponent, if its stable dimension is sufficiently large (greater than 1/2 or perhaps 3/2) and if it is exponentially mixing in a suitable sense, then the following formal expression for the first derivative of $ρ(ϕ)$ with respect to $f$ along $X$ is convergent: $$ Ψ(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty z^n\intρ(dx)\,X(x)\cdot\nabla_x(ϕ\circ f^n)\qq…
In this paper, we study ergodic features of invariant measures for the partially hyperbolic horseshoe at the boundary of uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms constructed in \cite{DHRS07}. Despite the fact that the non-wandering set is a horseshoe, it contains intervals. We prove that every recurrent point has non-zero Lyapunov exponents and all ergodic invariant measures are hyperbolic. As a consequence, we obtain the existence of equilibrium measures for any continuous potential. We also obtain an example of a family of $C^\infty$ potentials with phase transition.
This article is an expanded version of some notes for my talk at the ``Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems Workshop'' (from March 22 to March 25, 2012) held at the Department of Mathematics of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In the aforementioned talk, it was discussed some recent results on the fractal geometry of certain objects -- \emph{non-uniformly hyperbolic horseshoes} -- constructed by Jacob Palis and Jean-Christophe Yoccoz in their recent \emph{tour-de-force} work around \emph{heteroclinic bifurcations of surface diffeomorphisms}. The goal of the present article is t…
Recent works related to Palis conjecture of J. Yang, S. Crovisier, M. Sambarino and D. Yang showed that any aperiodic class of a $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism far away from homoclinic bifurcations (or homoclinic tangencies) is partially hyperbolic. We show in this paper that, generically, a non-trivial dominated splitting implies partial hyperbolicity for an aperiodic class if it is Lyapunov stable. More precisely, for $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms, if a Lyapunov stable aperiodic class has a non-trivial dominated splitting $E\oplus F$, then one of the two bundles is hyperbolic (either $E$ is co…
For a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set, we effect a multifractal analysis, i.e., decompose the set of non wandering points on the unstable manifold into level sets of an unstable Lyapunov exponent, and give a partial description of the Lyapunov spectrum which encodes this decomposition. We derive a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets in terms of the entropy and unstable Lyapunov exponent of invariant probability measures, and show the conti…
In this paper, we explore the three-dimensional chaotic set near a homoclinic cycle to a hyperbolic bifocus at which the vector field has negative divergence. If the invariant manifolds of the bifocus satisfy a non-degeneracy condition, a sequence of hyperbolic suspended horseshoes arises near the cycle, with one expanding and two contracting directions. We extend previous results on the field and we show that the first return map to a given cross section may be approximated by a map exhibiting heteroclinic tangencies associated to two periodic orbits. When the cycle is broken, under an additi…
For a non-conformal repeller $Λ$ of a $C^{1+α}$ map $f$ preserving an ergodic measure $μ$ of positive entropy, this paper shows that the Lyapunov dimension of $μ$ can be approximated gradually by the Carathéodory singular dimension of a sequence of horseshoes. For a $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphism $f$ preserving a hyperbolic ergodic measure $μ$ of positive entropy, if $(f, μ)$ has only two Lyapunov exponents $λ_u(μ)>0>λ_s(μ)$, then the Hausdorff or lower box or upper box dimension of $μ$ can be approximated by the corresponding dimension of the horseshoes $\{Λ_n\}$. The same statement holds true if $…
We develop a thermodynamic formalism for a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. For any $t\in\mathbb R$ we prove the existence of an invariant Borel probability measure which minimizes the free energy associated with a non continuous geometric potential $-t\log J^u$, where $J^u$ denotes the Jacobian in the unstable direction. Under a mild condition, we show that any accumulation point of these measures as $t\to+\infty$ minimizes the unstable Lyapunov exponent. …
The article states that for every compact manifold M of dimension 4 or higher there is an area U in a set of smooth diffeomorphisms over M such that every map f from U has local maximal partially hyperbolic attractor and nonatomic ergodic invariant measure on it where one of Lyapunov exponents vanish. The result is first proved for skew products over horseshoe and then transferred onto smooth diffeomorphisms.
We present here the first part of a program for a classification of the generic dynamics close to homoclinic and heteroclinic points, in the $C^r$ topologies, $r\geq 1$. This paper only contains announcements and a few sketches of proofs; a forthcoming series of papers will present the proofs in details. The two prototypical examples of non-hyperbolic dynamics are homoclinic tangencies and heterodimensional cycles. Palis conjectured that they actually characterize densely non-hyperbolic dynamics. It is therefore important to understand what happens close to those bifurcations. We generalize cl…
We consider the dynamics of strongly dissipative Hénon-like maps in the plane, around the first bifurcation parameter $a^*$ at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of homoclinic or heteroclinic tangencies inside the limit set. In [Takahasi H.: Commun. Math. Phys. {\bf 312} 37-85 (2012)], it was proved that $a^*$ is a full Lebesgue density point of the set of parameters for which Lebesgue almost every initial point diverges to infinity under forward iteration. For these parameters, we show that all Lyapunov exponents of all invariant ergodic Borel probability measures a…
We present examples of partially hyperbolic and topologically transitive local diffeomorphisms defined as skew products over a horseshoe which exhibit rich phase transitions for the topological pressure. This phase transition follows from a gap in the spectrum of the central Lyapunov exponents. It is associated to the coexistence of two equilibrium states with positive entropy. The diffeomorphisms mix hyperbolic behavior of different types. However, in some sense the expanding behavior is not dominating which is indicated by the existence of a measure of maximal entropy with nonpositive centra…
In this paper we mainly deal with an invariant (ergodic) hyperbolic measure $μ$ for a diffeomorphism $f,$ assuming that $f$ is just $C^1$ and for $μ$ a.e. $x$, the sum of Oseledec spaces corresponding to negative Lyapunov exponents (quasi-limit-)dominates the sum of Oseledec spaces corresponding to positive Lyapunov exponents at $x$. We generalize a certain of results of Pesin theory from $C^{1+α}$ to the $C^1$ system $ (f,μ)$, including a sufficient condition for existence of horseshoe, Livshitz theorem, exponential growth of periodic points, distribution of periodic points, periodic measures…
