In this paper we deal with an invariant ergodic hyperbolic measure $μ$ for a diffeomorphism $f,$ assuming that $f$ it is either $C^{1+α}$ or $f$ is $C^1$ and the Oseledec splitting of $μ$ is dominated. We show that this system $(f,μ)$ satisfies a weaker and non-uniform version of specification, related with notions studied in several recent papers, including \cite{STV,Y, PS, T,Var, Oli}.
Our main results have several consequences: as corollaries, we are able to improve the results about quantitative Poincaré recurrence, removing the assumption of the non-uniform specification property in the main Theorem of \cite{STV} that establishes an inequality between Lyapunov exponents and local recurrence properties. Another consequence is the fact that any of such measure is the weak limit of averages of Dirac measures at periodic points, as in \cite{Sigmund}. Following \cite{Y} and \cite{PS}, one can show that the topological pressure can be calculated by considering the convenient weighted sums on periodic points, whenever the dynamics is positive expansive and every measure with pressure close to the topological pressure is hyperbolic.
In this article we prove that if a flow exhibits a partially hyperbolic attractor and it has two periodic saddles with different indices, and the stable index of one of them coincides with the dimension of strongly stable bundles, then it does not satisfy the specification property. As an application, we prove that all Geometric Lorenz attractors do not satisfy the specification property.
We study the specification property for partially hyperbolic dynamical systems. In particular, we show that if a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism has two saddles with different indices, and stable manifold of one of them coincides with the strongly stable leaf, then it does not satisfy the specification property. As an application, we prove that there exists a $C^1$-open and dense subset $\mathcal P$ in the set of robustly non-hyperbolic transitive diffeomorphisms on a three dimensional closed manifold such that diffeomorphisms in $\mathcal P$ do not satisfy the specification property.
We provide an elementary proof of the equivalence of various notions of uniform hyperbolicity for a class of $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ cocycles and establish a Johnson-type theorem for extended CMV matrices, relating the spectrum to the points on the unit circle for which the associated Szegő cocycle is not uniformly hyperbolic.
We consider some general classes of random dynamical systems and show that a priori very weak nonuniform hyperbolicity conditions actually imply uniform hyperbolicity.
We prove a new characterization of uniform hyperbolicity for fiber-bunched cocycles. Specifically, we show that the existence of a uniform gap between the Lyapunov exponents of a fiber-bunched $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-cocycle defined over a subshift of finite type or an Anosov diffeomorphism implies uniform hyperbolicity. In addition, we construct an $α$-Hölder cocycle which has uniform gap between the Lyapunov exponents, however it is not uniformly hyperbolic.
We prove that, under a mild condition on the hyperbolicity of its periodic points, a map $g$ which is topologically conjugated to a hyperbolic map (respectively, an expanding map) is also a hyperbolic map (respectively, an expanding map). In particular, this result gives a partial positive answer for a question done by A. Katok, in a related context.
We show that for almost every frequency alpha \in \R \setminus \Q, for every C^omega potential v:\R/\Z \to R, and for almost every energy E the corresponding quasiperiodic Schrodinger cocycle is either reducible or nonuniformly hyperbolic. This result gives very good control on the absolutely continuous part of the spectrum of the corresponding quasiperiodic Schrodinger operator, and allows us to complete the proof of the Aubry-Andre conjecture on the measure of the spectrum of the Almost Mathieu Operator.
We present some constructions that are merely the fruit of combining recent results from two areas of smooth dynamics: nonuniformly hyperbolic systems and elliptic constructions.
We give sufficient conditions for the uniform hyperbolicity of certain nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. In particular, we show that local diffeomorphisms that are nonuniformly expanding on sets of total probability are necessarily uniformly expanding. We also present a version of this result for diffeomorphisms with nonuniformly hyperbolic sets.
We consider products of the matrices associated with the Szegő recursion from the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and show that under suitable assumptions, their norms grow exponentially in the number of factors. In the language of dynamical systems, this result expresses a uniform hyperbolicity statement. We present two applications of this result. On the one hand, we identify explicitly the almost sure spectrum of extended CMV matrices with non-negative random Verblunsky coefficients. On the other hand, we show that no Ising model in one dimension exhibits a phase transit…
In this paper, we show that for several interesting systems beyond uniform hyperbolicity, any generic continuous function has a unique maximizing measure with zero entropy. In some cases, we also know that the maximizing measure has full support. These interesting systems including singular hyperbolic attractors, $C^\infty$ surface diffeomorphisms and diffeomorphisms away from homoclinic tangencies.
We characterize two of the most studied non-uniform hyperbolicity conditions for rational maps, semi-hyperbolicity and the topological Collet-Eckmann condition, in terms of the maximal entropy measure. Using the same tools in the proof of these results we give an extension of a result of Carleson, Jones and Yoccoz, that semi-hyperbolicity characterizes those polynomial maps whose basin of attraction of infinity is a John domain, to rational maps having a completely invariant attracting basin.
We prove that for certain partially hyperbolic skew-products, non-uniform hyperbolicity along the leaves implies existence of a finite number of ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures which describe the asymptotics of almost every point. The main technical tool is an extension for sequences of maps of a result of de Melo and van Strien relating hyperbolicity to recurrence properties of orbits. As a consequence of our main result, we also obtain a partial extension of Keller's theorem guaranteeing the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures for non-uniformly …
We use the Invariance Principle of Avila and Viana to prove that every partially hyperbolic symplectic diffeomorphism with 2-dimensional center bundle, and satisfying certain pinching and bunching conditions, can be $C^r$-approximated by non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
We describe dimensional entropies introduced in a previous work list some of their properties and give some new proofs. These entropies allowed the definition of entropy-expanding maps. We introduce a new notion of entropy-hyperbolicity for diffeomorphisms. We indicate some simple sufficient conditions (some of them new) for these properties. We conclude by some work in progress and more questions.
For a nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems $H=h(p)+εP(p,q)$ with $(p,q)\in\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{T}^3$, large normally hyperbolic invariant cylinders exist along the whole resonant path, except for the $\sqrtε^{1+d}$-neighborhood of finitely many double resonant points. It allows one to construct diffusion orbits to cross double resonance.
We prove that every smooth action of Z^k, k>1, on the (k+1)-dimensional torus homotopic to an action by hyperbolic linear maps preserves an absolutely continuous measure. This is a first known result concerning abelian groups of diffeomorphisms where existence of an invariant geometric structure is obtained from homotopy data.
Let H be an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space, X a compact Hausdorff space and f : X \rightarrow X a homeomorphism which preserves a Borel ergodic measure which is positive on non-empty open sets. We prove that the non-uniformly Anosov cocycles are C0-dense in the family of partially hyperbolic f,H-skew products with non-trivial unstable bundles.
We prove the existence of SRB measures for diffeomorphisms where a positive volume set of initial conditions satisfy an "effective hyperbolicity" condition that guarantees certain recurrence conditions on the iterates of Lebesgue measure. We give examples of systems that do not admit a dominated splitting but can be shown to have SRB measures using our methods.
We give an essentially equivalent formulation of the backward contracting property, defined by Juan Rivera-Letelier, in terms of expansion along the orbits of critical values, for complex polynomials of degree at least two which are at most finitely renormalizable and have only hyperbolic periodic points, as well as for all smooth interval maps with non-flat critical points.
In this work we obtain a new criterion to establish ergodicity and non-uniform hyperbolicity of smooth measures of diffeomorphisms. This method allows us to give a more accurate description of certain ergodic components. The use of this criterion in combination with topological devices such as blenders lets us obtain global ergodicity and abundance of non-zero Lyapunov exponents in some contexts. In the partial hyperbolicity context, we obtain that stably ergodic diffeomorphisms are C^1-dense among volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with two-dimensional center bundle. This …
We prove that uniform hyperbolicity is invariant under topological conjugacy for dissipative polynomial automorphisms of C^2. Along the way we also show that a sufficient condition for hyperbolicity is that local stable and unstable manifolds of saddle points have uniform geometry.
We consider the dynamics of strongly dissipative Hénon-like maps in the plane, around the first bifurcation parameter $a^*$ at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of homoclinic or heteroclinic tangencies inside the limit set. In [Takahasi H.: Commun. Math. Phys. {\bf 312} 37-85 (2012)], it was proved that $a^*$ is a full Lebesgue density point of the set of parameters for which Lebesgue almost every initial point diverges to infinity under forward iteration. For these parameters, we show that all Lyapunov exponents of all invariant ergodic Borel probability measures a…
Uniform hyperbolicity is a strong chaotic property which holds, in particular, for Sinai billiards. In this paper, we consider the case of a nonflat billiard, that is, a Riemannian manifold with boundary. Each trajectory follows the geodesic flow in the interior of the billiard, and bounces when it meets the boundary. We give a sufficient condition for a nonflat billiard to be uniformly hyperbolic. As a particular case, we obtain a new criterion to show that a closed surface has an Anosov geodesic flow.
We prove that for a polynomial diffeomorphism of C^2, uniform hyperbolicity on the set of saddle periodic points implies that saddle points are dense in the Julia set. In particular f satisfies Smale's Axiom A on C^2 .
We consider complex Henon maps which are quasi-hyperbolic. We show that a quasi-hyperbolic map is uniformly hyperbolic if and only if there are no tangencies between stable and unstable manifolds.
We prove a geometric criterion on a $\SL$-invariant ergodic probability measure on the moduli space of holomorphic abelian differentials on Riemann surfaces for the non-uniform hyperbolicity of the Kontsevich--Zorich cocycle on the real Hodge bundle. Applications include measures supported on the $\SL$-orbits of all algebraically primitive Veech surfaces (see also \cite{Bouw:Moeller}) and of all Prym eigenforms discovered in \cite{McMullen2}, as well as all canonical absolutely continuous measures on connected components of strata of the moduli space of abelian differentials (see also \cite{Ft…
The connected configuration space of a so called cylindric billiard system is a flat torus minus finitely many spherical cylinders. The dynamical system describes the uniform motion of a point particle in this configuration space with specular reflections at the boundaries of the removed cylinders. It is proven here that under a certain geometric condition --- slightly stronger than the necessary condition presented in [S-Sz(1998)] --- a cylindric billiard flow is completely hyperbolic. As a consequence, every hard ball system is completely hyperbolic --- a result strengthening the theorem of …
In this article we introduce a gluing orbit property, weaker than specification, for both maps and flows. We prove that flows with the $C^1$-robust gluing orbit property are uniformly hyperbolic and that every uniformly hyperbolic flow satisfies the gluing orbit property. We also prove a level-1 large deviations principle and a level-2 large deviations lower bound for for semiflows with the gluing orbit property. As a consequence we establish a level-1 large deviations principle for hyperbolic flows and every continuous observable, and also a level-2 large deviations lower bound. Finally, sinc…
We construct an explicit example of family of non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, at the boundary of the set of uniformly hyperbolic systems, with one orbit of cubic heteroclinic tangency. One of the leaves involved in this heteroclinic tangency is periodic, and there is a certain degree of freedom for the choice of the second one. For a non-countable set of choices, this leaf is not periodic and the diffeomorphism is Kupka-Smale: every periodic point is hyperbolic and the intersections of stable and unstable leaves of periodic points are transverse. As a consequence of our construction,…
For a generic conservative diffeomorphism of a 3-manifold M, the Oseledets splitting is a globally dominated splitting. Moreover, either all Lyapunov exponents vanish almost everywhere, or else the system is non-uniformly hyperbolic and ergodic. This is the 3-dimensional version of a well-known result by Mañé-Bochi, stating that a generic conservative surface diffeomorphism is either Anosov or all Lyapunov exponents vanish almost everywhere. This result inspired and answers in the positive for dimension 3 a conjecture by Avila and Bochi. We also prove that all partially hyperbolic sets with po…
We prove that a C2 Hamiltonian system H in M is globally hyperbolic if any of the following statements holds: H is robustly topologically stable; H is stably shadowable; H is stably expansive; and H has the stable weak specification property. Moreover, we prove that, for a C2-generic Hamiltonian H, the union of the partially hyperbolic regular energy hypersurfaces and the closed elliptic orbits, forms a dense subset of M. As a consequence, any robustly transitive regular energy hypersurface of a C2-Hamiltonian is partially hyperbolic. Finally, we prove that stably weakly shadowable regular ene…
This paper intends to provide new, simple, and self-contained proofs of the equivalence of various different descriptions of the uniformly hyperbolic $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)$ sequences. While in the scenario of the Schrödinger cocyles, they may in turn be applied to give new and simple proofs of theorems regarding their relation with the spectral analysis of one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators. Concretely, this paper gives four different descriptions of uniformly hyperbolic sequences together with the detailed proofs of their equivalence. It provides concise and self-contained pro…
Let $f:\mathbb{C}^2\to \mathbb{C}^2$ be a polynomial skew product which leaves invariant an attracting vertical line $ L $. Assume moreover $f$ restricted to $L$ is non-uniformly hyperbolic, in the sense that $f$ restricted to $L$ satisfies one of the following conditions: 1. $f|_L$ satisfies Topological Collet-Eckmann and Weak Regularity conditions. 2. The Lyapunov exponent at every critical value point lying in the Julia set of $f|_L$ exist and is positive, and there is no parabolic cycle. Under one of the above conditions we show that the Fatou set in the basin of $L$ coincides with the uni…
We prove a criteria for uniform hyperbolicity based on the periodic points of the transformation. More precisely, if a mild (non uniform) hyperbolicity condition holds for the periodic points of any diffeomorphism in a residual subset of a $C^1$-open set $\SU$ then there exists an open and dense subset $\SA\subset \SU$ of Axiom A diffeomorphisms. Moreover, we also prove a noninvertible version of Ergodic Closing Lemma which we use to prove a counterpart of this result for local diffeomorphisms. As a simple corollary of our techniques, we have that an arbitrary $\mathrm{C}^1$-class local diffeo…
The dynamics of many important high-dimensional dynamical systems are both chaotic and complex, meaning that strong reducing hypotheses are required to understand the dynamics. The highly influential chaotic hypothesis of Gallavotti and Cohen states that the large-scale dynamics of high-dimensional systems are effectively uniformly hyperbolic, which implies many felicitous statistical properties. We obtain direct and reliable numerical evidence, contrary to the chaotic hypothesis, of the existence of non-hyperbolic large-scale dynamical structures in a mean-field coupled system. To do this we …
We consider the linear cocycle $(T,A)$ induced by a measure preserving dynamical system $T:X \to X$ and a map $A:X \to \mathit{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. We address the dependence of the upper Lyapunov exponent of $(T,A)$ on the dynamics $T$ when the map $A$ is kept fixed. We introduce explicit conditions on the cocycle that allow to perturb the dynamics, in the weak and uniform topologies, to make the exponent drop arbitrarily close to zero. In the weak topology we deduce that if $X$ is a compact connected manifold, then for a $C^r$ ($r \ge 1$) open and dense set of maps $A$, either $(T,A)$ is unifo…
We study rational functions satisfying summability conditions - a family of weak conditions on the expansion along the critical orbits. Assuming their appropriate versions, we derive many nice properties: There exists a unique, ergodic, and non-atomic conformal measure with exponent equal to the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. There is an absolutely continuous invariant measure with respect to this conformal measure. The Minkowski dimension of the Julia set is strictly less than 2. Either the Julia set is the whole sphere, or the dynamics is unstable. For such polynomials and Blaschke pr…
Let $Λ$ be an isolated non-trival transitive set of a $C^1$ generic diffeomorphism $f\in\Diff(M)$. We show that the space of invariant measures supported on $Λ$ coincides with the space of accumulation measures of time averages on one orbit. Moreover, the set of points having this property is residual in $Λ$ (which implies the set of irregular$^+$ points is also residual in $Λ$). As an application, we show that the non-uniform hyperbolicity of irregular$^+$ points in $Λ$ with totally 0 measure (resp., the non-uniform hyperbolicity of a generic subset in $Λ$) determines the uniform hyperbolicit…
In this paper we revisit uniformly hyperbolic basic sets and the domination of Oseledets splittings at periodic points. We prove that periodic points with simple Lyapunov spectrum are dense in non-trivial basic pieces of Cr-residual diffeomorphisms on three-dimensional manifolds (r >= 1). In the case of the C1-topology we can prove that either all periodic points of a hyperbolic basic piece for a diffeomorphism f have simple spectrum C1- robustly (in which case f has a finest dominated splitting into one-dimensional sub-bundles and all Lyapunov exponent functions of f are continuous in the wea…
A classical result in thermodynamic formalism is that for uniformly hyperbolic systems, every Hölder continuous potential has a unique equilibrium state. One proof of this fact is due to Rufus Bowen and uses the fact that such systems satisfy expansivity and specification properties. In these notes, we survey recent progress that uses generalizations of these properties to extend Bowen's arguments beyond uniform hyperbolicity, including applications to partially hyperbolic systems and geodesic flows beyond negative curvature. We include a new criterion for uniqueness of equilibrium states for …
Singular hyperbolicity is a weakened form of hyperbolicity that has been introduced for vector fields in order to allow non-isolated singularities inside the non-wandering set. A typical example of a singular hyperbolic set is the Lorenz attractor. However, in contrast to uniform hyperbolicity, singular hyperbolicity does not immediately imply robust topological properties, such as the transitivity. In this paper, we prove that open and densely inside the space of $C^1$ vector fields of a compact manifold, any singular hyperbolic attractors is robustly transitive.
We extend specification and periodic specification to finitely generated group actions on uniform spaces using a concept of specification point. We prove that certain group actions having two distinct specification points have positive entropy. We further prove that if a group containing an infinite order element acts on an infinite Hausdorff uniform space and the action possesses periodic specification, then it is Devaney chaotic.
This paper is an interval dynamics counterpart of three theories founded earlier by the authors, S. Smirnov and others in the setting of the iteration of rational maps on the Riemann sphere: the equivalence of several notions of non-uniform hyperbolicity, Geometric Pressure, and Nice Inducing Schemes methods leading to results in thermodynamical formalism. We work in a setting of generalized multimodal maps, that is smooth maps f of a finite union of compact intervals in R into R with non-flat critical points, such that on its maximal forward invariant set K the map f is topologically transiti…
Every volume-preserving centre-bunched fibred partially hyperbolic system with 2-dimensional centre either (1) has two distinct centre Lyapunov exponents, or (2) exhibits an invariant continuous line field (or pair of line fields) tangent to the centre leaves, or (3) admits a continuous conformal structure on the centre leaves invariant under both the dynamics and the stable and unstable holonomies. The last two alternatives carry strong restrictions on the topology of the centre leaves: (2) can only occur on tori, and for (3) the centre leaves must be either tori or spheres. Moreover, under s…
We establish bounds for the measure of deviation sets associated to continuous observables with respect to not necessarily invariant weak Gibbs measures. Under some mild assumptions, we obtain upper and lower bounds for the measure of deviation sets of some non-uniformly expanding maps, including quadratic maps and robust multidimensional non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms. For that purpose, a measure theoretical weak form of specification is introduced and proved to hold for the robust classes of multidimensional nonuniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms and Viana maps.
In the following text we introduce specification property (stroboscopical property) for dynamical systems on uniform space. We focus on two classes of dynamical systems: generalized shifts and dynamical systems with Alexandroff compactification of a discrete space as phase space. We prove that for a discrete finite topological space $X$ with at least two elements, a nonempty set $Γ$ and a self--map $φ:Γ\toΓ$ the generalized shift dynamical system $(X^Γ,σ_φ)$: \begin{itemize} \item has (almost) weak specification property if and only if $φ:Γ\toΓ$ does not have any periodic point, \item has (uni…
We discuss selected topics of current research interest in the theory of dynamical systems, with emphasis on dimension theory, multifractal analysis, and quantitative recurrence. The topics include the quantitative versus the qualitative behavior of Poincaré recurrence, the product structure of invariant measures and return times, the dimension of invariant sets and invariant measures, the complexity of the level sets of local quantities from the point of view of Hausdorff dimension, and the conditional variational principles as well as their applications to problems in number theory. We prese…
The Complex of Curves on a Surface is a simplicial complex whose vertices are homotopy classes of simple closed curves, and whose simplices are sets of homotopy classes which can be realized disjointly. It is not hard to see that the complex is finite-dimensional, but locally infinite. It was introduced by Harvey as an analogy, in the context of Teichmuller space, for Tits buildings for symmetric spaces, and has been studied by Harer and Ivanov as a tool for understanding mapping class groups of surfaces. In this paper we prove that, endowed with a natural metric, the complex is hyperbolic in …
