Singular hyperbolicity is a weakened form of hyperbolicity that has been introduced for vector fields in order to allow non-isolated singularities inside the non-wandering set. A typical example of a singular hyperbolic set is the Lorenz attractor. However, in contrast to uniform hyperbolicity, singular hyperbolicity does not immediately imply robust topological properties, such as the transitivity.
In this paper, we prove that open and densely inside the space of $C^1$ vector fields of a compact manifold, any singular hyperbolic attractors is robustly transitive.
We prove results related to robust transitivity and density of periodic points of Partially Hyperbolic Diffeomorphisms under conditions involving Accessibility and a property in the tangent bundle .
In \cite {kl1}, we extended various notions of recurrence for the generalized semigroup analogous to their counterpart in the classical theory of dynamics. In this paper, we shall address the alternative definition of chain recurrent set in terms of attractors, given by Hurley in \cite {mh} following Conley\rq{}s characterization in \cite {conley}. We shall also discuss the notion of topological transitivity and chain transitivity in this general setting.
A {\em singular hyperbolic set} is a partially hyperbolic set with singularities (all hyperbolic) and volume expanding central direction \cite{MPP1}. We study connected, singular-hyperbolic, attracting sets with dense closed orbits {\em and only one singularity}. These sets are shown to be transitive for most $C^r$ flows in the Baire's second category sence. In general these sets are shown to be either transitive or the union of two homoclinic classes. In the later case we prove the existence of finitely many homoclinic classes. Our results generalize for singular-hyperbolic systems a well kno…
We study a partially hyperbolic and topologically transitive local diffeomorphism $F$ that is a skew-product over a horseshoe map. This system is derived from a homoclinic class and contains infinitely many hyperbolic periodic points of different indices and hence is not hyperbolic. The associated transitive invariant set $Λ$ possesses a very rich fiber structure, it contains uncountably many trivial and uncountably many non-trivial fibers. Moreover, the spectrum of the central Lyapunov exponents of $F|_Λ$ contains a gap and hence gives rise to a first order phase transition. A major part of t…
A {\em singular hyperbolic attractor} for flows is a partially hyperbolic attractor with singularities (hyperbolic ones) and volume expanding central direction \cite{mpp1}. The geometric Lorenz attractor \cite{gw} is an example of a singular hyperbolic attractor. In this paper we study the perturbations of singular hyperbolic attractors for three-dimensional flows. It is proved that any attractor obtained from such perturbations contains a singularity. So, there is an upper bound for the number of attractors obtained from such perturbations. Furthermore, every three-dimensional flow $C^r$ clos…
An {\em attractor} is a transitive set of a flow to which all positive orbit close to it converges. An attractor is {\em singular-hyperbolic} if it has singularities (all hyperbolic) and is partially hyperbolic with volume expanding central direction \cite{MPP}. The geometric Lorenz attractor \cite{GW} is an example of a singular-hyperbolic attractor with topological dimension $\geq 2$. We shall prove that {\em all} singular-hyperbolic attractors on compact 3-manifolds have topological dimension $\geq 2$. The proof uses the methods in \cite{MP}.
It is shown that if a non-invertible area preserving local homeomorphism on $\mathbb{T}^2$ is homotopic to a linear expanding or hyperbolic endomorphism, then it must be topologically transitive. This gives a complete characterization, in any smoothness category, of those homotopy classes of conservative endomorphisms that consist entirely of transitive maps.
We prove the saturation of a generalized partially hyperbolic attractor of a $C^2$ map. As a consequence, we show that any generalized partially hyperbolic horseshoe-like attractor of a $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism has zero volume. In contrast, by modification of Poincaré cross section of the geometric model, we build a $C^1$-diffeomorphism with a partially hyperbolic horseshoe-like attractor of positive volume.
We obtain an upper bound for the number of attractors and repellers that can appear from small perturbations of a sectional hyperbolic set. This extends results from [Sectional-Anosov flows in higher dimensions] and [The explosion of singular-hyperbolic attractors].
We prove that at least one of the two invariant laminations of a strongly partially hyperbolic attractor with one-dimensional center bundle is minimal. This result extends those in [7] about minimal foliations for robustly transitive diffeomorphisms.
We introduce random towers to study almost sure rates of correlation decay for random partially hyperbolic attractors. Using this framework, we obtain abstract results on almost sure exponential, stretched exponential and polynomial correlation decay rates. We then apply our results to small random perturbations of Axiom A attractors, small perturbations of derived from Anosov partially hyperbolic systems and to solenoidal attractors with random intermittency.
We study non-invertible piecewise hyperbolic maps in the plane. The Hausdorff dimension of the attractor is calculated in terms of the Lyapunov exponents, provided that the map satisfies a transversality condition. Explicit examples of maps for which this condition holds are given.
An attractor $Λ$ for a 3-vector field $X$ is singular-hyperbolic if all its singularities are hyperbolic and it is partially hyperbolic with volume expanding central direction. We prove that $C^{1+α}$ singular-hyperbolic attractors, for some $α>0$, always have zero volume, thus extending an analogous result for uniformly hyperbolic attractors. The same result holds for a class of higher dimensional singular attractors. Moreover, we prove that if $Λ$ is a singular-hyperbolic attractor for $X$ then either it has zero volume or $X$ is an Anosov flow. We also present examples of $C^1$ singular-hyp…
It is known that nonuniformly hyperbolic maps admitting singularities have at most countably many ergodic Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measures. These maps include the Belykh attractor, the geometric Lorenz attractor, and more general Lorenz-type systems. In this paper, we establish easily verifiable sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the number of ergodic SRB measures is at most finite, and provide examples and nonexamples showing that the conditions are necessary in general.
We study the omega-limit sets $ω_X(x)$ in an isolating block $U$ of a singular-hyperbolic attractor for three-dimensional vector fields $X$. We prove that for every vector field $Y$ close to $X$ the set $ \{x\in U:ω_Y(x)$ contains a singularity$\}$ is {\em residual} in $U$. This is used to prove the persistence of singular-hyperbolic attractors with only one singularity as chain-transitive Lyapunov stable sets. These results generalize well known properties of the geometric Lorenz attractor \cite{gw} and the example in \cite{mpu}.
We prove that a class of partially hyperbolic attractors introduced by Castro and Nascimento have unique equilibrium states for natural classes of potentials. We also show if the attractors are $C^2$ and have invariant stable and centerunstable foliations, then there is a unique equilibrium state for the geometric potential and its 1-parameter family. We do this by applying general techniques developed by Climenhaga and Thompson.
In this paper, we study the existence of SRB measures for infinite dimensional dynamical systems in a Banach space. We show that if the system has a partially hyperbolic attractor with nontrivial finite dimensional unstable directions, then it has an SRB measure.
In this article we consider the ergodic optimization for hyperbolic flows and Lorenz attractors with respect to both continuous and Holder continuous observables. In the context of hyperbolic flows we prove that a Baire generic subset of continuous observables have a unique maximizing measure, with full support and zero entropy, and that a Baire generic subset of Holder continuous observables admit a unique and periodic maximizing measure. These results rely on a relation between ergodic optimization for suspension semiflows and ergodic optimization for the Poincaré map with respect to induced…
In this work, we study ergodic properties of certain partially hyperbolic attractors whose central direction has a neutral behavior, the main feature is a condition of transversality between unstable leaves when projected by the stable holonomy. We prove that partial hyperbolic attractors satisfying conditions of transversality between unstable leaves via the stable holonomy, neutrality in the central direction and regularity of the stable foliation admits a finite number of physical measures, coinciding with the ergodic u-Gibbs States, whose union of the basins has full Lebesgue measure. More…
In the present paper we contribute to the thermodynamic formalism of partially hyperbolic attractors for local diffeomorphisms admitting an invariant stable bundle and a positively invariant cone field with non-uniform cone expansion at a positive Lebesgue measure set of points. These include the case of attractors for Axiom A endomorphisms and partially hyperbolic endomorphisms derived from Anosov. We prove these attractors have finitely many SRB measures, that these are hyperbolic, and that the SRB measure is unique provided the dynamics is transitive. Moreover, we show that the SRB measures…
In this paper we consider expansive homeomorphisms of compact spaces with a hyperbolic metric presenting a self-similar behavior on stable and unstable sets. Several application are given related to Hausdorff dimension, entropy, intrinsically ergodic measures and the transitivity of expansive homeomorphisms with canonical coordinates.
In this paper, we study the existence of SRB measures and their properties for infinite dimensional dynamical systems in a Hilbert space. We show several results including (i) if the system has a partially hyperbolic attractor with nontrivial finite dimensional unstable directions, then it has at least one SRB measure; (ii) if the attractor is uniformly hyperbolic and the system is topological mixing and the splitting is Hölder continuous, then there exists a unique SRB measure which is mixing; (iii) if the attractor is uniformly hyperbolic and the system is non-wondering and and the splitting…
We prove exponential decay of correlations for a class of $C^{1+α}$ uniformly hyperbolic skew product flows, subject to a uniform nonintegrability condition. In particular, this establishes exponential decay of correlations for an open set of geometric Lorenz attractors. As a special case, we show that the classical Lorenz attractor is robustly exponentially mixing.
In this paper, we study the limit measures of the empirical measures of Lebesgue almost every point in the basin of a partially hyperbolic attractor. They are strongly related to a notion named Gibbs u-state, which can be defined in a large class of diffeomorphisms with less regularity and which is the same as Pesin-Sinai's notion for partially hyperbolic attractors of $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphisms. In particular, we prove that for partially hyperbolic $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center, and for Lebesgue almost every point: (1) the center Lyapunov exponent is well defined, but (…
We prove that the set of diffeomorphisms having at most finitely many attractors contains a dense and open subset of the space of $C^1$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center. This is obtained thanks to a robust geometric property of partially hyperbolic laminations that we show to hold after perturbations of the dynamics. This technique also allows to prove that $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms far from homoclinic tangencies in dimension $3$ either have at most finitely many attractors, or satisfy Newhouse phenomenon.
We prove that every $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has either infinitely many sinks, or, infinitely many hyperbolic or singular-hyperbolic attractors whose basins form a full Lebesgue measure set. We also prove in the orientable case that the set of accumulation points of the sinks of a $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has no dominated splitting with respect to the linear Poincaré flow. As a corollary we obtain that every three-dimensional flow can be $C^1$ approximated by flows with homoclinic tangencies or by singular-Axiom A flows.
We prove that a singular-hyperbolic attractor of a 3-dimensional flow is chaotic, in two strong different senses. Firstly, the flow is expansive: if two points remain close for all times, possibly with time reparametrization, then their orbits coincide. Secondly, there exists a physical (or Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen) measure supported on the attractor whose ergodic basin covers a full Lebesgue (volume) measure subset of the topological basin of attraction. Moreover this measure has absolutely continuous conditional measures along the center-unstable direction, is a $u$-Gibbs state and an equilibrium …
We prove the existence of a contracting invariant topological foliation in a full neighborhood for partially hyperbolic attractors. Under certain bunching conditions it can then be shown that this stable foliation is smooth. Specialising to sectional hyperbolic attractors, we give a verifiable condition for bunching. In particular, we show that the stable foliation for the classical Lorenz equation (and nearby vector fields) is better than $C^1$ which is crucial for recent results on exponential decay of correlations. In fact the foliation is at least $C^{1.278}$.
We prove that C^1-robustly transitive diffeomorphisms on surfaces with boundary do not exist, and we exhibit a class of diffeomorphisms of surfaces with boundary which are C^k-robustly transitive, with k greater or equal than 2. This class of diffeomorphisms are examples where a version of Palis' conjecture on surfaces with boundary, about homoclinic tangencies and uniform hyperbolicity, does not hold in the C^2-topology. This follows showing that blow-up of pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphisms on surfaces without boundary, become C^2-robustly topologically mixing diffeomorphisms on a surfaces with b…
This paper is in the form of an essay. It defines fractal tops and code space structures associated with set-attractors of hyperbolic iterated function systems (IFSs). The fractal top of an IFS is associated with a certain shift invariant subspace of code space, whence the entropy of the IFS, and of its set-attractor, may be defined. Given any ordered pair of hyperbolic IFSs, each with the same number of maps, there is a natural transformation, constructed with the aid of fractal tops, whose domain is the attractor A of the first IFS and whose range is contained in the attractor B of the secon…
Let $D$ be the set of $β\in (1, 2]$ such that $f_β$ is a symmetric tent map with finite critical orbit. For $β\in D$, by operating Denjoy like surgery on $f_β$, we constructed a $C^1$ unimodal map $\tilde{g}_β$ admitting a thick hyperbolic repelling invariant Cantor set which contains a wild Cantor attractor. The smoothness of $\tilde{g}_β$ is ensured by the effective estimation of the preimages of the critical point as well as the prescribed lengths of the inserted intervals. Furthermore, $D$ is dense in $(1, 2]$, and $\tilde{g}_β$ can not be $C^{1+α}$ because the hyperbolic repelling invaria…
We review the theory of strange attractors and their bifurcations. All known strange attractors may be subdivided into the following three groups: hyperbolic, pseudo-hyperbolic ones and quasi-attractors. For the first ones the description of bifurcations that lead to the appearance of Smale-Williams solenoids and Anosov-type attractors is given. The definition and the description of the attractors of the second class are introduced in the general case. It is pointed out that the main feature of the attractors of this class is that they contain no stable orbits. An etanol example of such pseudo…
A recent problem in dynamics is to determinate whether an attractor $Λ$ of a $C^r$ flow $X$ is $C^r$ robust transitive or not. By {\em attractor} we mean a transitive set to which all positive orbits close to it converge. An attractor is $C^r$ robust transitive (or {\em $C^r$ robust} for short) if it exhibits a neighborhood $U$ such that the set $\cap_{t>0}Y_t(U)$ is transitive for every flow $Y$ $C^r$ close to $X$. We give sufficient conditions for robustness of attractors based on the following definitions. An attractor is {\em singular-hyperbolic} if it has singularities (all hyperbolic) an…
It is known that volume hyperbolicity (partial hyperbolicity and uniform expansion or contraction of the volume in the extremal bundles) is a necessary condition for robust transitivity or robust chain recurrence hence for tameness. In this paper, on any 3-manifold we build examples of quasi-attractors which are volume hyperbolic and wild at the same time. As a main corollary, we see that, for any closed 3-manifold $M$, the space $\mathrm{Diff}^1(M)$ admits a non-empty open set where every $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism has no attractors or repellers. The main tool of our construction is the not…
We show that a strong partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^3$ isotopic to Anosov has a unique quasi-attractor. Moreover, we study the entropy of the diffeomorphism restricted to this quasi-attractor.
In this article we will describe a new construction for Gibbs measures for hyperbolic attractors generalizing the original construction of Sinai, Bowen and Ruelle of SRB measures. The classical construction of the SRB measure is based on pushing forward the normalized volume on a piece of unstable manifold. By modifying the density at each step appropriately we show that the resulting measure is a prescribed Gibbs measure. This contrasts with, and complements, the construction of Climenhaga-Pesin-Zelerowicz who replace the volume on the unstable manifold by a fixed reference measure. Moreover,…
We study weakly hyperbolic iterated function systems on compact spaces, as defined by Edalat, but in the more general setting of a compact parameter space. We prove the existence of attractors, both in the topological and measure theoretical viewpoint, and prove that the measure theoretical attractor is ergodic. We also define weakly hyperbolic iterated functions systems for complete spaces and compact parameter space, and prove that this definition extends the one given by Edalat. Furthermore, we study the question of existence of the attractors in this setting. Finally, we prove a version of…
It is well known that topological classification of dynamical systems with hyperbolic dynamics is significantly defined by dynamics on nonwandering set. F. Przytycki generalized axiom $A$ for smooth endomorphisms that was previously introduced by S. Smale for diffeomorphisms and proved spectral decomposition theorem which claims that nonwandering set of an $A$-endomorphism is a union of a finite number basic sets. In present paper the criterion for a basic sets of an $A$-endomorphism to be an attractor is given. Moreover, dynamics on basic sets of codimension one is studied. It is shown, that …
We study partially hyperbolic sets $K$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ whose tangent space splits as $T_K M=E^{cu}\oplus E^{s}$, for which the center-unstable direction $E^{cu}$ is non-uniformly expanding on some local unstable disk. We prove that the (stretched) exponential decay of recurrence times for an induced scheme can be deduced under the assumption of (stretched) exponential decay of the time that typical points need to achieve some uniform expanding in the center-unstable direction. This extends a result by Alves and Pinheiro to the (stretched) exponential case. As an application of our…
