A recent problem in dynamics is to determinate whether an attractor $Λ$ of a $C^r$ flow $X$ is $C^r$ robust transitive or not. By {\em attractor} we mean a transitive set to which all positive orbits close to it converge. An attractor is $C^r$ robust transitive (or {\em $C^r$ robust} for short) if it exhibits a neighborhood $U$ such that the set $\cap_{t>0}Y_t(U)$ is transitive for every flow $Y$ $C^r$ close to $X$. We give sufficient conditions for robustness of attractors based on the following definitions. An attractor is {\em singular-hyperbolic} if it has singularities (all hyperbolic) and is partially hyperbolic with volume expanding central direction \cite{MPP}. An attractor is {\em $C^r$ critically-robust} if it exhibits a neighborhood $U$ such that $\cap_{t>0}Y_t(U)$ is in the closure of the closed orbits is every flow $Y$ $C^r$ close to $X$. We show that on compact 3-manifolds all $C^r$ critically-robust singular-hyperbolic attractors with only one singularity are $C^r$ robust.
We study in this paper global properties, mainly of topological nature, of attractors of discrete dynamical systems. We consider the Andronov-Hopf bifurcation for homeomorphisms of the plane and establish some robustness properties for attractors of such homeomorphisms. We also give relations between attractors of flows and quasi-attractors of homeomorphisms in Rn. Finally, we give a result on the shape (in the sense of Borsuk) of invariant sets of IFSs on the plane, and make some remarks about the recent theory of Conley attractors for IFS.
We consider the pullback attractors for non-autonomous dynamical systems generated by stochastic lattice differential equations with non-autonomous deterministic terms. We first establish a sufficient condition for existence of pullback attractors of lattice dynamical systems with both non-autonomous deterministic and random forcing terms. As an application of the abstract theory, we prove the existence of a unique pullback attractor for the first-order lattice dynamical systems with both deterministic non-autonomous forcing terms and multiplicative white noise. Our results recover many existi…
We study pullback attractors of non-autonomous non-compact dynamical systems generated by differential equations with non-autonomous deterministic as well as stochastic forcing terms. We first introduce the concepts of pullback attractors and asymptotic compactness for such systems. We then prove a sufficient and necessary condition for existence of pullback attractors. We also introduce the concept of complete orbits for this sort of systems and use these special solutions to characterize the structures of pullback attractors. For random systems containing periodic deterministic forcing terms…
This paper presents a sufficient condition for a continuum in $R^n$ to be embeddable in $R^n$ in such a way that its image is not an attractor of any iterated function system. An example of a continuum in $R^2$ that is not an attractor of any weakly contracting iterated function system is also given.
The asymptotically autonomous robustness of random attractors of stochastic fluid equations defined on \emph{bounded} domains has been considered in the literature. In this article, we initially consider this topic (almost surely and in probability) for a non-autonomous stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equation driven by additive and multiplicative noise defined on some \emph{unbounded Poincaré domains}. There are two significant keys to study this topic: what is the asymptotically autonomous limiting set of the time-section of random attractors as time goes to negative infinity, and how to show th…
It is known that nonuniformly hyperbolic maps admitting singularities have at most countably many ergodic Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measures. These maps include the Belykh attractor, the geometric Lorenz attractor, and more general Lorenz-type systems. In this paper, we establish easily verifiable sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the number of ergodic SRB measures is at most finite, and provide examples and nonexamples showing that the conditions are necessary in general.
As the parameters of a map are varied an attractor may vary continuously in the Hausdorff metric. The purpose of this paper is to explore the continuation of chaotic attractors. We argue that this is not a helpful concept for smooth unimodal maps for which periodic windows fill parameter space densely, but that for piecewise-smooth maps it provides a way to delineate structure within parameter regions of robust chaos and form a stronger notion of robustness. We obtain conditions for the continuity of an attractor and demonstrate the results with coupled skew tent maps, the Lozi map, and the bo…
In this paper we provide a dynamical characterization of isolated invariant continua which are global attractors for planar dissipative flows. As a consequence, a sufficient condition for an isolated invariant continuum to be either an attractor or a repeller is derived for general planar flows.
We consider iterated function systems $\mathrm{IFS}(T_1,\dots,T_k)$ consisting of continuous self maps of a compact metric space $X$. We introduce the subset $S_{\mathrm{t}}$ of {\emph{weakly hyperbolic sequences}} $ξ=ξ_0\ldotsξ_n \ldots \in Σ_k^+$ having the property that $\bigcap_n T_{ξ_{0}}\circ\cdots\circ T_{ξ_{n}}(X)$ is a point $\{π(ξ)\}$. The target set $π(S_{\mathrm{t}})$ plays a role similar to the semifractal introduced by Lasota-Myjak. Assuming that $S_{\mathrm{t}}\ne \emptyset$ (the only hyperbolic-like condition we assume) we prove that the IFS has at most one strict attractor and…
In this paper we consider sufficient conditions for the existence of uniform compact global attractor for non-autonomous dynamical systems in special classes of infinite-dimensional phase spaces. The obtained generalizations allow us to avoid the restrictive compactness assumptions on the space of shifts of non-autonomous terms in particular evolution problems. The results are applied to several evolution inclusions.
A {\em singular hyperbolic attractor} for flows is a partially hyperbolic attractor with singularities (hyperbolic ones) and volume expanding central direction \cite{mpp1}. The geometric Lorenz attractor \cite{gw} is an example of a singular hyperbolic attractor. In this paper we study the perturbations of singular hyperbolic attractors for three-dimensional flows. It is proved that any attractor obtained from such perturbations contains a singularity. So, there is an upper bound for the number of attractors obtained from such perturbations. Furthermore, every three-dimensional flow $C^r$ clos…
In this paper we study continuous parametrized families of dissipative flows, which are those flows having a global attractor. The main motivation for this study comes from the observation that, in general, global attractors are not robust, in the sense that small perturbations of the flow can destroy their globality. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a global attractor to be continued to a global attractor. We also study, using shape theoretical methods and the Conley index, the bifurcation global to non-global.
We consider unstable attractors; Milnor attractors $A$ such that, for some neighbourhood $U$ of $A$, almost all initial conditions leave $U$. Previous research strongly suggests that unstable attractors exist and even occur robustly (i.e. for open sets of parameter values) in a system modelling biological phenomena, namely in globally coupled oscillators with delayed pulse interactions. In the first part of this paper we give a rigorous definition of unstable attractors for general dynamical systems. We classify unstable attractors into two types, depending on whether or not there is a neighbo…
We will introduce the notion of Emergence for a dynamical system, and we will conjecture the local typicality of super-polynomial ones. Then, as part of this program, we will provide sufficient conditions for an open set of Cd-families of Cr-dynamics to contain a Baire generic set formed by families displaying infinitely many sinks at every parameter, for all 1 \le d \le r with d finite (and r possibly infinite) for two different topologies on families. In particular the case d=r=1 is new.
An attractor of a piecewise-smooth continuous system of differential equations can bifurcate from a stable equilibrium to a more complicated invariant set when it collides with a switching manifold under parameter variation. Here numerical evidence is provided to show that this invariant set can be chaotic. The transition occurs locally (in a neighbourhood of a point) and instantaneously (for a single critical parameter value). This phenomenon is illustrated for the normal form of a boundary equilibrium bifurcation in three dimensions using parameter values adapted from of a piecewise-linear m…
We explicitly construct global attractors of fully nonlinear parabolic equations. The attractors are decomposed as equilibria (time independent solutions) and heteroclinic orbits (solutions that converge to distinct equilibria backwards and forwards in time). In particular, we state necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of heteroclinics between hyperbolic equilibria, which is accompanied by a method that compute such conditions.
We consider non-Newtonian incompressible 3D fluid of Ladyzhenskaya type, in the setting of the dynamic boundary condition. Assuming sufficient growth rate of the stress tensor with respect to the velocity gradient, we establish explicit dimension estimate of the global attractor in terms of the physical parameters of the problem.
This paper investigates the longtime behavior of delayed 3D Navier-Stokes equations in terms of attractors. The study will strongly rely on the investigation of the linearized Navier-Stokes system, and the relationship between the discrete dynamical flow for the linearized system and the continuous flow associated to the original system. Assuming the viscosity to be sufficiently large, there exists a unique local attractor for the delayed 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, the local attractor reduces to a singleton set.
The goal of this paper is to construct explicitly the global attractors of quasilinear parabolic equations, as it was done for the semilinear case by Brunovský and Fiedler (1986), and generalized by Fiedler and Rocha (1996). In particular, we construct heteroclinic connections between hyperbolic equilibria, stating necessary and sufficient conditions for heteroclinics to occur. Such conditions can be computed through a permutation of the equilibria. Lastly, an example is computed yielding the well known Chafee-Infante attractor.
Poincaré recognized that phase portraits are mainly structured around fixed points. Nevertheless, the knowledge of fixed points and their properties is not sufficient to determine the whole structure of chaotic attractors. In order to understand how chaotic attractors are shaped by singular sets of the differential equations governing the dynamics, flow curvature manifolds are computed. We show that the time dependent components of such manifolds structure Rossler-like chaotic attractors and may explain some limitation in the development of chaotic regimes.
The collection of all non-degenerate, continuous, two-piece, piecewise-linear maps on $\mathbb{R}^2$ can be reduced to a four-parameter family known as the two-dimensional border-collision normal form. We prove that throughout an open region of parameter space this family has an attractor satisfying Devaney's definition of chaos. This strengthens existing results on the robustness of chaos in piecewise-linear maps. We further show that the stable manifold of a saddle fixed point, despite being a one-dimensional object, densely fills an open region containing the attractor. Finally we identify …
Consider two objects associated to the Iterated Function System (IFS) $\{1+λz,-1+λz\}$: the locus $\mathcal{M}$ of parameters $λ\in\mathbb{D}\setminus\{0\}$ for which the corresponding attractor is connected; and the locus $\mathcal{M}_0$ of parameters for which the related attractor contains $0$. The set $\mathcal{M}$ can also be characterized as the locus of parameters for which the attractor of the IFS $\{1+λz, λz, -1+λz\}$ contains $λ^{-1}$. Exploiting the asymptotic similarity of $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{M}_0$ with the respective associated attractors, we give sufficient conditions on …
We consider a family of semilinear parabolic problems with nonlinear boundary conditions \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} u_t(x,t) &=Δu(x,t) -au(x,t) + f(u(x,t)),\ x \in Ω_ε\mbox{ and } t>0\,,\\ \displaystyle\frac{\partial u}{\partial N}(x,t) &=g(u(x,t)),\ x \in \partialΩ_ε\mbox{ and } t>0\,, \end{aligned} \right. \] where $Ω_0 \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a smooth (at least $\mathcal{C}^2$) domain , $Ω_ε = h_ε(Ω_0)$ and $h_ε$ is a family of diffeomorphisms converging to the identity in the $\mathcal{C}^1$-norm. Assuming suitable regularity and dissipative conditions for the nonlinearites, we show that …
In this paper we study random iterated function systems. Our main result gives sufficient conditions for an analogue of a well known theorem due to Khintchine from Diophantine approximation to hold almost surely for stochastically self-similar and self-affine random iterated function systems.
The goal of this paper is to construct explicitly the global attractors of parabolic equations with singular diffusion coefficients on the boundary, as it was done without the singular term for the semilinear case by Brunovsk'y and Fiedler (1986), generalized by Fiedler and Rocha (1996) and later for quasilinear equa- tions by the author (2017). In particular, we construct heteroclinic connections between hyperbolic equilibria, stating necessary and sufficient conditions for heteroclinics to occur. Such conditions can be computed through a permutation of the equilibria. Lastly, an example is c…
We consider iterated functions systems (IFS) on compact metric spaces and introduce the concept of target sets. Such sets have very rich dynamical properties and play a similar role as semifractals introduced by Lasota and Myjak do for regular IFSs. We study sufficient conditions which guarantee that the closure of the target set is a local attractor for the IFS. As a corollary, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the IFS having a global attractor. We give an example of a non-regular IFS whose target set is nonempty, showing that our approach gives rise to a "new class" of sem…
We consider finite systems of contractive homeomorphisms of a complete metric space, which are non-redundant on every level. In general this separation condition is weaker than the strong open set condition and is not equivalent to the weak separation property. We prove that this separation condition is equivalent to the strong Markov property (see definition below). We also show that the set of $N$-tuples of contractive homeomorphisms, which are non-redundant on every level, is a $G_δ$ set in the topology of pointwise convergence of every component mapping with an additional requirement that …
We provide sufficient conditions for synchronization by noise, i.e. under these conditions we prove that weak random attractors for random dynamical systems consist of single random points. In the case of SDE with additive noise, these conditions are also essentially necessary. In addition, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a minimal weak point random attractor consisting of a single random point. As a result, synchronization by noise is proven for a large class of SDE with additive noise. In particular, we prove that the random attractor for an SDE with drift given by a (m…
We give bounds for the global attractor of the delay differential equation $x'(t) =-μx(t)+f(x(t-τ))$, where $f$ is unimodal and has negative Schwarzian derivative. If $f$ and $μ$ satisfy certain condition, then, regardless of the delay, all solutions enter the domain where f is monotone decreasing and the powerful results for delayed monotone feedback can be applied to describe the asymptotic behaviour of solutions. In this situation we determine the sharpest interval that contains the global attractor for any delay. In the absence of that condition, improving earlier results, we show that if …
