We give bounds for the global attractor of the delay differential equation $x'(t) =-μx(t)+f(x(t-τ))$, where $f$ is unimodal and has negative Schwarzian derivative. If $f$ and $μ$ satisfy certain condition, then, regardless of the delay, all solutions enter the domain where f is monotone decreasing and the powerful results for delayed monotone feedback can be applied to describe the asymptotic behaviour of solutions. In this situation we determine the sharpest interval that contains the global attractor for any delay. In the absence of that condition, improving earlier results, we show that if the d5A5Aelay is sufficiently small, then all solution enter the domain where $f'$ is negative. Our theorems then are illustrated by numerical examples using Nicholson's blowflies equation and the Mackey-Glass equation.
We classify the measure theoretic attractors of general C^3 unimodal maps with quadratic critical points. The main ingredient is the decay of geometry.
For a non-flat $C^3$ unimodal map with a Cantor attractor, we show that for any open cover $\mathcal U$ of this attractor, the complexity function $p(\mathcal U, n)$ is of order $n\log n$. In the appendix, we construct a non-renormalizable map with a Cantor attractor for which $p(\mathcal{U}, n)$ is bounded from above for any open cover $\mathcal{U}$.
In this work, we relate the geometry of chaotic attractors of typical analytic unimodal maps to the behavior of the critical orbit. Our main result is an explicit formula relating the combinatorics of the critical orbit with the exponents of periodic orbits. This connection between topological and smooth invariants is obtained through an analysis of the physical measure. Since the exponents of periodic orbits form a complete set of smooth invariants in this setting, we have ``typical geometric rigidity'' of the dynamics of such chaotic attractors. This unexpected result implies that the lamina…
Fibonacci unimodal maps can have a wild Cantor attractor, and hence be Lebesgue dissipative, depending on the order of the critical point. We present a one-parameter family $f_λ$ of countably piecewise linear unimodal Fibonacci maps in order to study the thermodynamic formalism of dynamics where dissipativity of Lebesgue (and conformal) measure is responsible for phase transitions. We show that for the potential $ϕ_t = -t\log|f'_λ|$, there is a unique phase transition at some $t_1 \le 1$, and the pressure $P(ϕ_t)$ is analytic (with unique equilibrium state) elsewhere. The pressure is majorised…
We study the asymptotic dynamics of stochastic Young differential delay equations under the regular assumptions on Lipschitz continuity of the coefficient functions. Our main results show that, if there is a linear part in the drift term which has no delay factor and has eigenvalues of negative real parts, then the generated random dynamical system possesses a random pullback attractor provided that the Lipschitz coefficients of the remaining parts are small.
The global asymptotic behavior of a stochastic Hopfield neural network model (HNNM) with delays is explored by studying the existence and structure of random attractors. It is first proved that the trajectory field of the stochastic delayed HNNM admits an almost sure continuous version, which is compact for $t>τ$ (where $τ$ is the delay) by a delicate construction based on the random semiflow generated by the diffusion term. Then, this version is shown to generate a random dynamical system (RDS) by piece-wise linear approximation, after which the existence of a random absorbing set is obtained…
The analysis of the long-term behavior of the mathematical model of a neural network constitutes a suitable framework to develop new tools for the dynamical description of nonautonomous state-dependent delay equations (SDDEs). The concept of global attractor is given, and some results which establish properties ensuring its existence and providing a description of its shape, are proved. Conditions for the exponential stability of the global attractor are also studied. Some properties of comparison of solutions constitute a key in the proof of the main results, introducing methods of monotonici…
In this work we present a novel framework for the computation of finite dimensional invariant sets of infinite dimensional dynamical systems. It extends a classical subdivision technique [Dellnitz/Hohmann 1997] for the computation of such objects of finite dimensional systems to the infinite dimensional case by utilizing results on embedding techniques for infinite dimensional systems. We show how to implement this approach for the analysis of delay differential equations and illustrate the feasibility of our implementation by computing invariant sets for three different delay differential equ…
It will be shown that the smooth conjugacy class of an $S-$unimodal map which does not have a periodic attractor neither a Cantor attractor is determined by the multipliers of the periodic orbits. This generalizes a result by M.Shub and D.Sullivan for smooth expanding maps of the circle.
The aim of this paper is to prove the existence and qualitative property of random attractors for a stochastic nonlocal delayed reaction-diffusion equation (SNDRDE) on a semi-infinite interval with a Dirichlet boundary condition on the finite end. This equation models the spatial-temporal evolution of the mature individuals for a two-stage species whose juvenile and adults both diffuse that lives on a semi-infinite domain and subject to random perturbations. By transforming the SNDRDE into a random evolution equation with delay, by means of a stationary conjugate transformation, we first estab…
The aim of this paper is to obtain an estimation of Hausdorff as well as fractal dimensions of random attractors for a class of stochastic partial differential equations with delay. The stochastic equation is first transformed into a delayed random partial differential equation by means of a random conjugation, which is then recast into an auxiliary Hilbert space. For the obtained equation, it is firstly proved that it generates a random dynamical system (RDS) in the auxiliary Hilbert space. Then it is shown that the equation possesses random attractors by a uniform estimate of the solution an…
This paper investigates the longtime behavior of delayed 3D Navier-Stokes equations in terms of attractors. The study will strongly rely on the investigation of the linearized Navier-Stokes system, and the relationship between the discrete dynamical flow for the linearized system and the continuous flow associated to the original system. Assuming the viscosity to be sufficiently large, there exists a unique local attractor for the delayed 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, the local attractor reduces to a singleton set.
In this paper, we mainly study the regularity of pullback $\mathcal{D}$-attractors for a nonautonomous nonclassical diffusion equation with delay term $b(t,u_t)$ which contains some hereditary characteristics. Under a critical nonlinearity $f$, a time-dependent force $g(t,x)$ with exponential growth and a delayed force term $b(t,u_t)$, we prove that there exists a pullback $\mathcal{D}$-attractor $\mathcal{A}=\{A(t):t \in \mathbb{R}\}$ in $\mathbb{K}^1=H_0^1(Ω) \times L^2((-h,0);L^2(Ω))$ to problem \eqref{ine01} and for each $t \in \mathbb{R}$, $A(t)$ is bounded in $\mathbb{K}^2=H^2(Ω) \cap H_…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of solution to a non-autonomous diffusion equations with delay containing some hereditary characteristics and nonlocal diffusion in time-dependent space $C_{\mathcal{H}_{t}(Ω)}$. When the nonlinear function $f$ satisfies the polynomial growth of arbitrary order $p-1$ $(p \ge 2)$ and the external force $h \in L_{l o c}^{2}\left(\mathbb{R} ; H^{-1}(Ω)\right)$, we establish the existence and regularity of the time-dependent pullback attractors.

An attractor of a piecewise-smooth continuous system of differential equations can bifurcate from a stable equilibrium to a more complicated invariant set when it collides with a switching manifold under parameter variation. Here numerical evidence is provided to show that this invariant set can be chaotic. The transition occurs locally (in a neighbourhood of a point) and instantaneously (for a single critical parameter value). This phenomenon is illustrated for the normal form of a boundary equilibrium bifurcation in three dimensions using parameter values adapted from of a piecewise-linear m…
Delay-coordinate mapping is an effective and widely used technique for reconstructing and analyzing the dynamics of a nonlinear system based on time-series outputs. The efficacy of delay-coordinate mapping has long been supported by Takens' embedding theorem, which guarantees that delay-coordinate maps use the time-series output to provide a reconstruction of the hidden state space that is a one-to-one embedding of the system's attractor. While this topological guarantee ensures that distinct points in the reconstruction correspond to distinct points in the original state space, it does not ch…
We gain further insight into the use of the Schwarzian derivative to obtain new results for a family of functional differential equations including the famous Wright's equation and the Mackey-Glass type delay differential equations. We present some dichotomy results, which allow us to get easily computable bounds of the global attractor. We also discuss related conjectures, and formulate new open problems.
This work is the first attempt to treat partial differential equations with discrete (concentrated) state-dependent delay. The main idea is to approximate the discrete delay term by a sequence of distributed delay terms (all with state-dependent delays). We study local existence and long-time asymptotic behavior of solutions and prove that the model with distributed delay has a global attractor while the one with discrete delay possesses the trajectory attractor.
We prove that the well-known 3/2 stability condition established for the Wright equation (WE) still holds if the nonlinearity $p(\exp(-x)-1)$ in WE is replaced by a decreasing or unimodal smooth function f with $f'(0)<0$ satisfying the standard negative feedback and below boundedness conditions and having everywhere negative Schwarz derivative.
Takens' Embedding Theorem asserts that when the states of a hidden dynamical system are confined to a low-dimensional attractor, complete information about the states can be preserved in the observed time-series output through the delay coordinate map. However, the conditions for the theorem to hold ignore the effects of noise and time-series analysis in practice requires a careful empirical determination of the sampling time and number of delays resulting in a number of delay coordinates larger than the minimum prescribed by Takens' theorem. In this paper, we use tools and ideas in Compressed…
We consider a system of several nonlinear equations with a distributed delay and obtain absolute asymptotic stability conditions, independent of the delay. The ideas of the proofs are based on the notion of a strong attractor. The results are applied to Hopfield neural networks, Nicholson's blowflies type system, and compartment models of population dynamics.
Parabolic partial differential equations with state-dependent delays (SDDs) are investigated. The delay term presented by Stieltjes integral simultaneously includes discrete and distributed SDDs. The singular Lebesgue-Stieltjes measure is also admissible. The conditions for the corresponding initial value problem to be well-posed are presented. The existence of a compact global attractor is proved.
A new class of nonlinear partial differential equations with distributed in space and time state-dependent delay is investigated. We find appropriate assumptions on the kernel function which represents the state-dependent delay and discuss advantages of this class. Local and long-time asymptotic properties, including the existence of global attractor, are studied.
In this paper, a class of Kolmogorov systems with delays are studied. Sufficient conditions are provided for a system to have a compact uniform attractor. Then Jansen's result (J. Math. Biol. Vol. 25 (1987) 411-422) for autonomous replicator and Lotka-Volterra systems has been extended to delayed nonautonomous Kolmogorov systems with periodic or autonomous Lotka-Volterra subsystems. Thus, simple algebraic conditions are obtained for partial permanence and permanence. An outstanding feature of all these results is that the conditions are irrelevant of the size and distribution of the delays.
We investigate a class of non-linear partial differential equations with discrete state-dependent delays. The existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for initial functions from a Banach space are proved. To get the well-posed initial value problem we restrict our study to a smaller metric space, construct the dynamical system and prove the existence of a compact global attractor.
Nonresonant Hopf-Hopf singularity in neutral functional differential equation (NFDE) is considered. An algorithm for calculating the third-order normal form is established by using the formal adjoint theory, center manifold theorem and the traditional normal form method for RFDE. Van der Pol's equation with extended delay feedback is studied as an example. The unfoldings near the Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point is given by applying this algorithm. Periodic solutions, quasi-periodic solutions are found via theoretical bifurcation diagram and numerical illustrations. The Hopf-Hopf bifurcation diagra…
Partial differential equations with discrete (concentrated) state-dependent delays in the space of continuous functions are investigated. In general, the corresponding initial value problem is not well posed, so we find an additional assumption on the state-dependent delay function to guarantee the well posedness. For the constructed dynamical system we study the long-time asymptotic behavior and prove the existence of a compact global attractor.
The exponential ordering is exploited in the context of non-auto\-no\-mous delay systems, inducing monotone skew-product semiflows under less restrictive conditions than usual. Some dynamical concepts linked to the order, such as semiequilibria, are considered for the exponential ordering, with implications for the determination of the presence of uniform persistence or the existence of global attractors. Also, some important conclusions on the long-term dynamics and attraction are obtained for monotone and sublinear delay systems for this ordering. The results are then applied to almost perio…
Parabolic differential equations with discrete state-dependent delay are studied. The approach, based on an additional condition on the delay function introduced in [A.V. Rezounenko, Differential equations with discrete state-dependent delay: uniqueness and well-posedness in the space of continuous functions, Nonlinear Analysis: Theory, Methods and Applications, 70 (11) (2009), 3978-3986] is developed. We propose and study a state-dependent analogue of the condition which is sufficient for the well-posedness of the corresponding initial value problem on the whole space of continuous functions …
Embedding techniques allow the approximations of finite dimensional attractors and manifolds of infinite dimensional dynamical systems via subdivision and continuation methods. These approximations give a topological one-to-one image of the original set. In order to additionally reveal their geometry we use diffusion mapst o find intrinsic coordinates. We illustrate our results on the unstable manifold of the one-dimensional Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation, as well as for the attractor of the Mackey-Glass delay differential equation.
Partial differential equations with discrete (concentrated) state-dependent delays are studied. The existence and uniqueness of solutions with initial data from a wider linear space is proven first and then a subset of the space of continuously differentiable (with respect to an appropriate norm) functions is used to construct a dynamical system. This subset is an analogue of \textit{the solution manifold} proposed for ordinary equations in [H.-O. Walther, The solution manifold and $C\sp 1$-smoothness for differential equations with state-dependent delay, J. Differential Equations, {195}(1), (…
A central challenge in data-driven model discovery is the presence of hidden, or latent, variables that are not directly measured but are dynamically important. Takens' theorem provides conditions for when it is possible to augment these partial measurements with time delayed information, resulting in an attractor that is diffeomorphic to that of the original full-state system. However, the coordinate transformation back to the original attractor is typically unknown, and learning the dynamics in the embedding space has remained an open challenge for decades. Here, we design a custom deep auto…
The first part of the paper is devoted to studying the continuous dependence of the solutions of Carathéodory constant delay differential equations where the vector fields satisfy classical cooperative conditions. As a consequence, when the set of considered vector fields is invariant with respect to the time-translation map, the continuity of the respective induced skew-product semiflows is obtained. These results are important for the study of the long-term behavior of the trajectories. In particular, the construction of semicontinuous semiequilibria and equilibria is extended to the context…
Numerical bifurcation analysis, and in particular two-parameter continuation, is used in consort with numerical simulation to reveal complicated dynamics in the Mackey-Glass equation for moderate values of the delay close to the onset of chaos. In particular a cusp bifurcation of periodic orbits and resulting branches of folds of periodic orbits effectively partition the parameter space into regions where different behaviours are seen. The cusp bifurcation leads directly to bistability between periodic orbits, and subsequently to bistability between a periodic orbit and a chaotic attractor. Th…
