In this work we obtain a new criterion to establish ergodicity and non-uniform hyperbolicity of smooth measures of diffeomorphisms. This method allows us to give a more accurate description of certain ergodic components. The use of this criterion in combination with topological devices such as blenders lets us obtain global ergodicity and abundance of non-zero Lyapunov exponents in some contexts. In the partial hyperbolicity context, we obtain that stably ergodic diffeomorphisms are C^1-dense among volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with two-dimensional center bundle. This is motivated by a well known conjecture of C. Pugh and M. Shub.
If a non-ergodic, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 3-torus is homotopic to an Anosov diffeomorphism $A$, it is topologically conjugate to $A$.
In this paper we obtain two criteria of stable ergodicity outside the partially hyperbolic scenario. In both criteria, we use a weak form of hyperbolicity called chain-hyperbolicity. It is obtained one criterion for diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting and one criterion for weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. As an application of one of these criteria, we obtain the $C^1$-density of stable ergodicity inside a certain class of weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
Using quadratic forms, we stablish a criteria to relate the curvature of a Riemannian manifold and partial hyperbolicity of its geodesic flow. We show some examples which satisfy the criteria and another which does not satisfy it but still has a partially hyperbolic geodesic flow.
We prove that uniform hyperbolicity is invariant under topological conjugacy for dissipative polynomial automorphisms of C^2. Along the way we also show that a sufficient condition for hyperbolicity is that local stable and unstable manifolds of saddle points have uniform geometry.
We prove a criteria for uniform hyperbolicity based on the periodic points of the transformation. More precisely, if a mild (non uniform) hyperbolicity condition holds for the periodic points of any diffeomorphism in a residual subset of a $C^1$-open set $\SU$ then there exists an open and dense subset $\SA\subset \SU$ of Axiom A diffeomorphisms. Moreover, we also prove a noninvertible version of Ergodic Closing Lemma which we use to prove a counterpart of this result for local diffeomorphisms. As a simple corollary of our techniques, we have that an arbitrary $\mathrm{C}^1$-class local diffeo…
We study the geodesic flow of a class of 3-manifolds introduced by Benoist which have some hyperbolicity but are non-Riemannian, not CAT(0), and with non-C^1 geodesic flow. The geometries are nonstrictly convex Hilbert geometries in dimension three which admit compact quotient manifolds by discrete groups of projective transformations. We prove the Patterson-Sullivan density is canonical, with applications to counting, and construct explicitly the Bowen-Margulis measure of maximal entropy. The main result of this work is ergodicity of the Bowen-Margulis measure.
In the paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for ergodicity (with respect to the normalized Haar measure) of discrete dynamical systems $<f;\mathbf S_{2^{-r}}(a)>$ on 2-adic spheres $\mathbf S_{2^{-r}}(a)$ of radius $2^{-r}$, $r\ge 1$, centered at some point $a$ from the ultrametric space of 2-adic integers $\mathbb Z_2$. The map $f\colon\mathbb Z_2\to\mathbb Z_2$ is assumed to be non-expanding and measure-preserving; that is, $f$ satisfies a Lipschitz condition with a constant 1 with respect to the 2-adic metric, and $f$ preserves a natural probability measure on $\mathbb Z_2$,…
This paper is devoted to the problem of ergodicity of $p$-adic dynamical systems. Our aim is to present criteria of ergodicity in terms of coordinate functions corresponding to digits in the canonical expansion of $p$-adic numbers. The coordinate representation can be useful, e.g., for applications to cryptography. Moreover, by using this representation we can consider non-smooth $p$-adic transformations. The basic technical toolsare van der Put series and usage of algebraic structure (permutations) induced by coordinate functions with partially frozen variables. We illustrate the basic theore…
The main subject of the paper, motivated by a question raised by Boshernitzan, is to give criteria for a bounded complex-valued sequence to be uncorrelated to any strictly ergodic sequence. As a tool developed to study this problem we introduce the notion of correlation between two shift-invariant measures supported by the symbolic space with complex symbols. We also prove a "lifting lemma" for generic points: given a joining $ξ$ of two shift-invariant measures $μ$ and $ν$, every point $x$ generic for $μ$ lifts to a pair $(x,y)$ generic for $ξ$ (such $y$ exists in the full symbolic space). Thi…
In this article we introduce a gluing orbit property, weaker than specification, for both maps and flows. We prove that flows with the $C^1$-robust gluing orbit property are uniformly hyperbolic and that every uniformly hyperbolic flow satisfies the gluing orbit property. We also prove a level-1 large deviations principle and a level-2 large deviations lower bound for for semiflows with the gluing orbit property. As a consequence we establish a level-1 large deviations principle for hyperbolic flows and every continuous observable, and also a level-2 large deviations lower bound. Finally, sinc…
A classical fact in ergodic theory is that ergodicity is equivalent to almost everywhere divergence of ergodic sums of all nonnegative integrable functions which are not identically zero. We show two methods, one in the measure preserving case and one in the nonsingular case, which enable one to prove this criteria by checking it on a dense collection of functions and then extending it to all nonnegative functions. The first method is then used in a new proof of a folklore criterion for ergodicity of Poisson suspensions which does not make any reference to Fock spaces. The second method which …
We study the spectral properties of ergodic Schrödinger operators that are associated to a certain family of non-primitive substitutions on a binary alphabet. The corresponding subshifts provide examples of dynamical systems that go beyond minimality, unique ergodicity and linear complexity. In some parameter region, we are naturally in the setting of an infinite ergodic measure. The almost sure spectrum is singular and contains an interval. Some criteria for the exclusion of eigenvalues are fully characterized, including the existence of strongly palindromic sequences. Many of our structural …
