A holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ is post-critically algebraic if its critical hypersurfaces are periodic or preperiodic. This notion generalizes the notion of post-critically finite rational maps in dimension one. We will study the eigenvalues of the differential of such a map along a periodic cycle. When $n=1$, a well-known fact is that the eigenvalue along a periodic cycle of a post-critically finite rational map is either superattracting or repelling. We prove that when $n=2$ the eigenvalues are still either superattracting or repelling. This is an improvement of a result by Mattias Jonsson. When $n\geq 2$ and the cycle is outside the post-critical set, we prove that the eigenvalues are repelling. This result improves one which was already obtained by Fornaess and Sibony under a hyperbolicity assumption on the complement of the post-critical set.
We study eigenvalues along periodic cycles of post-critically finite endomorphisms of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ in higher dimension. It is a classical result when $n = 1$ that those values are either $0$ or of modulus strictly bigger than $1$. It has been conjectured in [Van Tu Le. Periodic points of post-critically algebraic holomorphic endomorphisms, Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, pages 1-33, 2020] that the same result holds for every $n \geq 2$. In this article, we verify the conjecture for the class of weakly post-critically finite all the way down maps which was introduced in [Matthieu Astor…
We study the dynamics of post-critically finite endomorphisms of P^k(C). We prove that post-critically finite endomorphisms are always post-critically finite all the way down under a mild regularity condition on the post-critical set. We study the eigenvalues of periodic points of post-critically finite endomorphisms. Then, under a weak transversality condition and assuming Kobayashi hyperbolicity of the complement of the post-critical set, we prove that the only possible Fatou components are super-attracting basins, thus partially extending to any dimension a result of Fornaess-Sibony and Ron…
Let $f$ be a post-critically finite endomorphism (PCF map for short) on $\mathbb{P}^2$, let $J_1$ denote the Julia set and let $J_2$ denote the support of the measure of maximal entropy. In this paper we show that: 1. $J_1\setminus J_2$ is contained in the union of the (finitely many) basins of critical component cycles and stable manifolds of sporadic super-saddle cycles. 2. For every $x\in J_2$ which is not contained in the stable manifold of a sporadic super-saddle cycle, there is no Fatou disk containing $x$. Here sporadic means that the super-saddle cycle is not contained in a critical co…
The holomorphic endomorphism f of projective space is called post-critically finite (PCF) if the forward image of the critical locus, under iteration of f, has algebraic support (i.e., is a finite union of hypersurfaces). In the case of dimension 1, a deep result of Thurston implies that there are no algebraic families of PCF morphisms, other than a well-understood exceptional class known as the flexible Lattes maps. This note proves a corresponding result in arbitrary dimension, for a certain subclass of morphism. Specifically, we restrict attention to morphisms f of degree at least two, with…
We classify noninvertible, holomorphic selfmaps of the projective plane that preserve an algebraic web. In doing so, we obtain interesting examples of critically finite maps.
We study endomorphisms constructed by Sarah Koch in her thesis and we focus on the eigenvalues of the differential of such maps at its fixed points. In Koch's thesis, to each post-critically finite unicritical polynomial, Koch associated a post-critically algebraic endomorphism of $\mathbb{CP}^k$. Koch showed that the eigenvalues of the differentials of such maps along periodic cycles outside the post-critical sets have modulus strictly greater than $1$. In this article, we show that the eigenvalues of the differentials at fixed points are either $0$ or have modulus strictly greater than $1$. …
In the context of holomorphic families of endomorphisms of $\mathbb P^k$, we prove that stability in the sense of [BBD18] is equivalent to a summability condition for the post-critical mass and to the convergence of a suitably defined ramification current. This allows us to both simplify the approach of [BBD18] and better relate stability to post-critical normality.
Let $K$ be a number field and $v$ a non archimedean valuation on $K$. We say that an endomorphism $Φ\colon \mathbb{P}_1\to \mathbb{P}_1$ has good reduction at $v$ if there exists a model $Ψ$ for $Φ$ such that $\degΨ_v$, the degree of the reduction of $Ψ$ modulo $v$, equals $\degΨ$ and $Ψ_v$ is separable. We prove a criterion for good reduction that is the natural generalization of a result due to Zannier in \cite{Uz3}. Our result is in connection with other two notions of good reduction, the simple and the critically good reduction. The last part of our article is dedicated to prove a characte…
We study the dynamics of a class of endomorphisms of A^N which restricts, when N = 1, to the class of unicritical polynomials. Over the complex numbers, we obtain lower bounds on the sum of Lyapunov exponents, and a statement which generalizes the compactness of the Mandelbrot set. Over the algebraic numbers, we obtain estimates on the critical height, and over general algebraically closed fields we obtain some rigidity results for post-critically finite morphisms of this form.
We describe and implement an algorithm to find all post-critically finite (PCF) cubic polynomials defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, up to conjugacy over $\text{PGL}_2(\bar{\mathbb{Q}})$. We describe normal forms that classify equivalence classes of cubic polynomials while respecting the field of definition. Applying known bounds on the coefficients of post-critically bounded polynomials to these normal forms simultaneously at all places of $\mathbb{Q}$, we create a finite search space of cubic polynomials over $\mathbb{Q}$ that may be PCF. Using a computer search of these possibly PCF cubic polynomia…
We show that the set of complex points in the moduli space of polynomials of degree d corresponding to post-critically finite polynomials is a set of algebraic points of bounded height. It follows that for any B, the set of conjugacy classes of post-critically finite polynomials of degree d with coefficients of algebraic degree at most B is a finite and effectively computable set. In the case d=3 and B=1 we perform this computation. The proof of the main result comes down to finding a relation between the "naive" height on the moduli space, and Silverman's critical height.
Let $f:{\mathbb P}^n\to{\mathbb P}^n$ be a morphism of degree $d\ge2$. The map $f$ is said to be post-critically finite (PCF) if there exist integers $k\ge1$ and $\ell\ge0$ such that the critical locus $\operatorname{Crit}_f$ satisfies $f^{k+\ell}(\operatorname{Crit}_f)\subseteq{f^\ell(\operatorname{Crit}_f)}$. The smallest such $\ell$ is called the tail-length. We prove that for $d\ge3$ and $n\ge2$, the set of PCF maps $f$ with tail-length at most $2$ is not Zariski dense in the the parameter space of all such maps. In particular, maps with periodic critical loci, i.e., with $\ell=0$, are not…
A rational function of degree at least two with coefficients in an algebraically closed field is post-critically finite (PCF) if all of its critical points have finite forward orbit under iteration. We show that the collection of PCF rational functions is a set of bounded height in the moduli space of rational functions over the complex numbers, once the well-understood family known as flexible Lattes maps is excluded. As a consequence, there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of non-Lattes PCF rational maps of a given degree defined over any given number field. The key ingredient of the…
In this paper, we study hyperbolic rational maps with finitely connected Fatou sets. We construct models of post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping schemes for such maps, generalizing post-critically finite rational maps in the case of connected Julia set. We show they are general limits of rational maps as we quasiconformally stretch the dynamics. Conversely, we use quasiconformal surgery to show any post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping scheme arises as such a limit. We construct abundant examples thanks to the flexibilities of the models, and use them to construct a sequence…
The theory of Hubbard trees provides an effective classification of non-linear post-critically finite polynomial maps from \C to itself. This note will extend this classification to the case of maps from a finite union of copies of \C to itself. Maps which are post-critically finite and nowhere linear will be characterized by a ``forest'', which is made up out of one tree in each copy of \C.
We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the realization of mapping schemata as post-critically finite polynomials, or more generally, as post-critically finite polynomial maps from a finite union of copies of the complex numbers {\bf C} to itself which have degree two or more in each copy. As a consequence of these results we prove a transitivity relation between hyperbolic components in parameter space which was conjectured by Milnor.
Recent work of Dylan Thurston gives a condition for when a post-critically finite branched self-cover of the sphere is equivalent to a rational map. We apply D. Thurston's positive criterion for rationality to give a new proof of a theorem of Rees, Shishikura, and Tan about the mateability of quadratic polynomials when one polynomial is in the main molecule. These methods may be a step in understanding the mateability of higher degree post-critically finite polynomials and demonstrate how to apply the positive criterion to classical problems.
We realize a dynamical decomposition for a post-critically finite rational map which admits a combinatorial decomposition. We split the Riemann sphere into two completely invariant subsets. One is a subset of the Julia set consisting of uncountably many Jordan curve components. Most of them are wandering. The other consists of components that are pullbacks of finitely many renormalizations, together with possibly uncountably many points. The quotient action on the decomposed pieces is encoded by a dendrite dynamical system. We also introduce a surgery procedure to produce post-critically finit…
In 1980's, Thurston established a combinatorial characterization for post-critically finite rational maps. This criterion was then extended by Cui, Jiang, and Sullivan to sub-hyperbolic rational maps. The goal of this paper is to present a new but simpler proof of this result by adapting the argument in the proof of Thurston's Theorem.
We prove: If $f(z)$ is a critically finite rational map which has exactly two critical points and which is not conjugate to a polynomial, then the boundary of every Fatou component of $f$ is a Jordan curve. If $f(z)$ is a hyperbolic critically finite rational map all of whose postcritical points are periodic, then there exists a cycle of Fatou components whose boundaries are Jordan curves. We give examples of critically finite hyperbolic rational maps $f$ with the property that on the closure of a Fatou component $Ω$ satisfying $f(Ω)=Ω$, $f|_{\bdry Ω}$ is not topologically conjugate to the dyn…
We establish the equidistribution with respect to the bifurcation measure of post-critically finite maps in any one-dimensional algebraic family of unicritical polynomials. Using this equidistribution result, together with a combinatorial analysis of certain algebraic correspondences on the complement of the Mandelbrot set $M_2$ (or generalized Mandelbrot set $M_d$ for degree $d>2$), we classify all complex plane curves $C$ with Zariski-dense subsets of points $(a,b)\in C$, such that both $z^d+a$ and $z^d+b$ are simultaneously post-critically finite for a fixed degree $d\geq 2$. Our result is …
We describe the iterated monodromy groups associated with post-critically finite quadratic polynomials, and explicit their connection to the `kneading sequence' of the polynomial. We then give recursive presentations by generators and relations for these groups, and study some of their properties, like torsion and `branchness'.
We classify all post-critically finite unicritical polynomials defined over the maximal totally real algebraic extension of ${\mathbb Q}$. Two auxiliary results used in the proof of this result may be of some independent interest. The first is a recursion formula for the $n$-diameter of an interval, which uses properties of Jacobi polynomials. The second is a numerical criterion which allows one to the give a bound on the degree of any algebraic integer having all of its complex embeddings in a real interval of length less than $4$.
