We prove: If $f(z)$ is a critically finite rational map which has exactly two critical points and which is not conjugate to a polynomial, then the boundary of every Fatou component of $f$ is a Jordan curve. If $f(z)$ is a hyperbolic critically finite rational map all of whose postcritical points are periodic, then there exists a cycle of Fatou components whose boundaries are Jordan curves. We give examples of critically finite hyperbolic rational maps $f$ with the property that on the closure of a Fatou component $Ω$ satisfying $f(Ω)=Ω$, $f|_{\bdry Ω}$ is not topologically conjugate to the dynamics of any polynomial on its Julia set.
We study the family of singular perturbations of Blaschke products $B_{a,λ}(z)=z^3\frac{z-a}{1-\overline{a}z}+\fracλ{z^2}$. We analyse how the connectivity of the Fatou components varies as we move continuously the parameter $λ$. We prove that all possible escaping configurations of the critical point $c_-(a,λ)$ take place within the parameter space. In particular, we prove that there are maps $B_{a,λ}$ which have Fatou components of arbitrarily large finite connectivity within their dynamical planes.
In this paper, we study hyperbolic rational maps with finitely connected Fatou sets. We construct models of post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping schemes for such maps, generalizing post-critically finite rational maps in the case of connected Julia set. We show they are general limits of rational maps as we quasiconformally stretch the dynamics. Conversely, we use quasiconformal surgery to show any post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping scheme arises as such a limit. We construct abundant examples thanks to the flexibilities of the models, and use them to construct a sequence…
We establish a principle that we call the Fatou-Shishikura injection for Newton maps of polynomials: there is a dynamically natural injection from the set of non-repelling periodic orbits of any Newton map to the set of its critical orbits. This injection obviously implies the classical Fatou-Shishikura inequality, but it is stronger in the sense that every non-repelling periodic orbit has its own critical orbit. Moreover, for every Newton map we associate a forward invariant graph (a puzzle) which provides a dynamically defined partition of the Riemann sphere into closed topological disks (pu…
For a dominant algebraically stable rational self-map of the complex projective plane of degree at least 2, we will consider three different definitions of Fatou set and show the equivalence of them. Consequently, it follows that all Fatou components are Stein. This is an improvement of an early result by Fornaess and Sibony.
We provide a natural canonical decomposition of postcritically finite rational maps with non-empty Fatou sets based on the topological structure of their Julia sets. The building blocks of this decomposition are maps where all Fatou components are Jordan disks with disjoint closures (Sierpiński maps), as well as those where any two Fatou components can be connected through a countable chain of Fatou components with common boundary points (crochet or Newton-like maps). We provide several alternative characterizations for our decomposition, as well as an algorithm for its effective computation. …
We look at the maximal entropy (MME) measure of the boundaries of connected components of the Fatou set of a rational map of degree greater than or equal to 2. We show that if there are infinitely many Fatou components, and if either the Julia set is disconnected or the map is hyperbolic, then there can be at most one Fatou component whose boundary has positive MME measure. We also replace hyperbolicity by the more general hypothesis of geometric finiteness.
A classification of the periodic components of the Fatou set of $p$-adic rational maps. Each such periodic component is either an immediate attracting basin or an open affinoid, where the dynamics is quasi-periodic (the $p$-adic analogues of Siegel discs and Herman rings.) The main tool is a fixed point theorem for connected subsets of Berkovich's projective line (or p-adic hyperbolic space).
Recently Merenkov and Sabitova introduced the notion of a homogeneous planar set. Using this notion they proved a result for Sierpi${ń}$ski carpet Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps that relates the diameters of the peripheral circles to the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. We extend this theorem to Julia sets (not necessarily Sierpi${ń}$ski carpets) of semi-hyperbolic rational maps, and prove a stronger version of the theorem that was conjectured by Merenkov and Sabitova.
We show that an invariant Fatou component of a hyperbolic transcendental entire function is a bounded Jordan domain (in fact, a quasidisc) if and only if it contains only finitely many critical points and no asymptotic curves. We use this theorem to prove criteria for the boundedness of Fatou components and local connectivity of Julia sets for hyperbolic entire functions, and give examples that demonstrate that our results are optimal. A particularly strong dichotomy is obtained in the case of a function with precisely two critical values.
If $R$ is a rational map, the Main Result is a uniformization Theorem for the space of decompositions of the iterates of $R$. Secondly, we show that Fatou conjecture holds for decomposable rational maps.
The goal of this paper is to study the family of singular perturbations of Blaschke products given by $B_{a,λ}(z)=z^3\frac{z-a}{1-\overline{a}z}+\fracλ{z^2}$. We focus on the study of these rational maps for parameters $a$ in the punctured disk $\mathbb{D}^*$ and $|λ|$ small. We prove that, under certain conditions, all Fatou components of a singularly perturbed Blaschke product $B_{a,λ}$ have finite connectivity but there are components of arbitrarily large connectivity within its dynamical plane. Under the same conditions we prove that the Julia set is the union of countably many Cantor sets…
Many results of the Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions extend to uniformly quasiregular maps in higher dimensions. We obtain results of this type for certain classes of quasiregular maps which are not uniformly quasiregular.
In this paper, we prove that a postcritically finite rational map with non-empty Fatou set is Thurstion equivalent to an expanding Thurston map if and only if its Julia set is homeomorphic to the standard Sierpinski carpet
In this paper, we prove that if $R\colon\widehat{\mathbb{C}}\to\widehat{\mathbb{C}}$ is a postcritically finite rational map with Julia set homeomorphic to the Sierpiński carpet, then there is an integer $n_0$, such that, for any $n\ge n_0$, there exists an $R^n$-invariant Jordan curve $Γ$ containing the postcritical set of $R$.
We realize a dynamical decomposition for a post-critically finite rational map which admits a combinatorial decomposition. We split the Riemann sphere into two completely invariant subsets. One is a subset of the Julia set consisting of uncountably many Jordan curve components. Most of them are wandering. The other consists of components that are pullbacks of finitely many renormalizations, together with possibly uncountably many points. The quotient action on the decomposed pieces is encoded by a dendrite dynamical system. We also introduce a surgery procedure to produce post-critically finit…
This survey is an introduction to the classification of Fatou components in holomorphic dynamics. We start with the description of the Fatou and Julia sets for rational maps of the Riemann sphere, and finish with an account of the recent results on Fatou components for polynomial skew-products in complex dimension two, where we focus on the key steps in the construction giving the existence of a wandering domain for a polynomial endomorphism of $\mathbb{C}^2$.
We consider rational surface automorphisms with positive entropy. A Fatou component is said to be a rotation domain if the automorphism induces a torus action on it. Here we construct a rational surface automorphism with positive entropy with the following property: it has a rotation domain which contains both a curve of fixed points and isolated fixed points. This Fatou component cannot be imbedded into complex euclidean space, so we introduce a global linear model space and show that it can be globally linearized in this model.
Markov partitions persisting in a neighbourhood of hyperbolic components of rational maps were constructed under the condition that closures of Fatou components are disjoint in \cite{R1}. Given such a partition, we characterize all nearby hyperbolic components in terms of the symbolic dynamics. This means we can count them, and also obtain topological information. We also determine extra conditions under which all nearby type IV hyperbolic components are given by matings. These are probably the first known results of this type.
Little is known about the existence of wandering Fatou components for rational maps in two complex variables. In 2003 Lilov proved the non-existence of wandering Fatou components for polynomial skew-products in the neighborhood of an invariant super-attracting fiber. In fact Lilov proved a stronger result, namely that the forward orbit of any vertical disk must intersect a fattened Fatou component of the invariant fiber. Naturally the next class of maps to study are polynomial skew-products with an invariant attracting (but not super-attracting) fiber. Here we show that Lilov's stronger result…
It is known that the disconnected Julia set of any polynomial map does not contain buried Julia components. But such Julia components may arise for rational maps. The first example is due to Curtis T. McMullen who provided a family of rational maps for which the Julia sets are Cantor of Jordan curves. However all known examples of buried Julia components, up to now, are points or Jordan curves and comes from rational maps of degree at least 5. This paper introduce a family of hyperbolic rational maps with disconnected Julia set whose exchanging dynamics of postcritically separating Julia compo…
We consider entire transcendental maps with bounded set of singular values such that periodic rays exist and land. For such maps, we prove a refined version of the Fatou-Shishikura inequality which takes into account rationally invisible periodic orbits, that is, repelling cycles which are not landing points of any periodic ray. More precisely, if there are $q<\infty$ singular orbits, then the sum of the number of attracting, parabolic, Siegel, Cremer or rationally invisible orbits is bounded above by $q$. In particular, there are at most $q$ rationally invisible repelling periodic orbits. The…
We show that Fatou components of a semi-hyperbolic rational map are John domains and that the converse does not hold. This generalizes a famous result of Carleson, Jones and Yoccoz. We show that a connected Julia set is locally connected for a large class of non-uniformly hyperbolic rational maps. This class is more general than semi-hyperbolicity and includes Collet-Eckmann and Topological Collet-Eckmann maps and maps verifying a summability condition (as considered by Graczyk and Smirnov).
This paper contains a quite detailed description of the C*-algebra arising from the transformation groupoid of a rational map of degree at least two on the Riemann sphere. The algebra is decomposed stepwise via extensions of familiar C*-algebras whose nature depend on the structure of the Julia set and the stable regions in the Fatou set, as well as on the behaviour of the critical points.
Suppose $f$ and $g$ are two post-critically finite polynomials of degree $d_1$ and $d_2$ respectively and suppose both of them have a finite super-attracting fixed point of degree $d_0$. We prove that one can always construct a rational map $R$ of degree $$D = d_1 + d_2 - d_0$$ by gluing $f$ and $g$ along the Jordan curve boundaries of the immediate super-attracting basins. The result can be used to construct many rational maps with interesting dynamics.
It is conjectured that a rational map whose coefficients are algebraic over $\Q_p$ has no wandering components of the Fatou set. R. Benedetto has shown that any counter example to this conjecture must have a wild recurrent critical point. We provide here the first examples of rational maps whose coefficients are algebraic over $\Q_p$ and that have a (wild) recurrent critical point. In fact, we show that there is such a rational map in every one parameter family of rational maps that is defined over a finite extension of $\Q_p$ and that has a Misiurewicz bifurcation.
We investigate the dynamics of polynomial semigroups (semigroups generated by a family of polynomial maps on the Riemann sphere) and the random dynamics of polynomials on the Riemann sphere. Combining the dynamics of semigroups and the fiberwise (random) dynamics, we give a classification of polynomial semigroups $G$ such that $G$ is generated by a compact family $Γ$, the planar postcritical set of $G$ is bounded, and $G$ is (semi-) hyperbolic. In one of the classes, we have that for almost every sequence $γ\in Γ^{\Bbb{N}}$, the Julia set $J_γ$ of $γ$ is a Jordan curve but not a quasicircle, t…
Rational semigroups were introduced by Hinkkanen and Martin as a generalization of the iteration of a single rational map. There has subsequently been much interest in the study of rational semigroups. Quasiregular semigroups were introduced shortly after rational semigroups as analogues in higher real dimensions, but have received far less attention. Each map in a quasiregular semigroup must necessarily be a uniformly quasiregular map. While there is a completely viable theory for the iteration of uniformly quasiregular maps, it is a highly non-trivial matter to construct them. In this paper,…
We study transcendental singularities of a Schröder map arising from a rational function $f$, using results from complex dynamics and Nevanlinna theory. These maps are transcendental meromorphic functions of finite order in the complex plane. We show that their transcendental singularities lie over the set where $f$ is not semihyperbolic (unhyperbolic). In addition, if they are direct, then they lie over only attracting periodic points of $f$, and moreover, if $f$ is a polynomial, then both direct and indirect singularities lie over attracting, parabolic and Cremer periodic points of $f$. We a…
We show that if a meromorphic function has two completely invariant Fatou components and only finitely many critical and asymptotic values, then its Julia set is a Jordan curve. However, even if both domains are attracting basins, the Julia set need not be a quasicircle. We also show that all critical and asymptotic values are contained in the two completely invariant components. This need not be the case for functions with infinitely many critical and asymptotic values.
Sun Daochun and Yang Lo have shown that many results of the Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions extend to quasiregular self-maps of the Riemann sphere for which the degree exceeds the dilatation. We show that in this context, in contrast to the case of rational functions, the Julia set may have Hausdorff dimension zero. On the other hand, we exhibit a gauge function depending on the degree and the dilatation such that the Hausdorff measure with respect to this gauge function is always positive, but may be finite.
For any integers $d\ge 3$ and $n\ge 1$, we construct a hyperbolic rational map of degree $d$ such that it has $n$ cycles of the connected components of its Julia set except single points and Jordan curves.
We introduce a new canonical height function for Jordan blocks of small eigenvalues for endomorphisms on smooth projective varieties over a number field. We prove that under an assumption on the eigenvalues of the endomorphism on the group of divisors modulo numerical equivalence, the arithmetic degree at a rational point is equal to one if and only if it is preperiodic under the endomorphism.
A rational function of degree at least two with coefficients in an algebraically closed field is post-critically finite (PCF) if all of its critical points have finite forward orbit under iteration. We show that the collection of PCF rational functions is a set of bounded height in the moduli space of rational functions over the complex numbers, once the well-understood family known as flexible Lattes maps is excluded. As a consequence, there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of non-Lattes PCF rational maps of a given degree defined over any given number field. The key ingredient of the…
Let $f$ be a rational map with degree $d\geq 2$ whose Julia set is connected but not equal to the whole Riemann sphere. It is proved that there exists a rational map $g$ such that $g$ contains a buried Julia component on which the dynamics is quasiconformally conjugate to that of $f$ on the Julia set if and only if $f$ does not have parabolic basins and Siegel disks. If such $g$ exists, then the degree can be chosen such that $\text{deg}(g)\leq 7d-2$. In particular, if $f$ is a polynomial, then $g$ can be chosen such that $\text{deg}(g)\leq 4d+4$. Moreover, some quartic and cubic rational maps…
For the family of quadratic rational functions having a $2$-cycle of bounded type Siegel disks, we prove that each of the boundaries of these Siegel disks contains at most one critical point. In the parameter plane, we prove that the locus for which the boundaries of the $2$-cycle of Siegel disks contain two critical points is a Jordan curve.
The Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational and transcendental entire functions has recently been extended to quasiregular maps in more than two real dimensions. Our goal in this paper is similar; we extend the iteration theory of analytic self-maps of the punctured plane to quasiregular self-maps of punctured space. We define the Julia set as the set of points for which the complement of the forward orbit of any neighbourhood of the point is a finite set. We show that the Julia set is non-empty, and shares many properties with the classical Julia set of an analytic function. These properties…
The Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions has been extended to quasiregular mappings in higher dimension by various authors. The purpose of this paper is an analogous extension of the iteration theory of transcendental entire functions. Here the Julia set is defined as the set of all points such that complement of the forward orbit of any neighbourhood has capacity zero. It is shown that for maps which are not of polynomial type the Julia set is non-empty and has many properties of the classical Julia set of transcendental entire functions.
