In this paper, we study hyperbolic rational maps with finitely connected Fatou sets. We construct models of post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping schemes for such maps, generalizing post-critically finite rational maps in the case of connected Julia set. We show they are general limits of rational maps as we quasiconformally stretch the dynamics. Conversely, we use quasiconformal surgery to show any post-critically finite hyperbolic tree mapping scheme arises as such a limit.
We construct abundant examples thanks to the flexibilities of the models, and use them to construct a sequence of rational maps of a fixed degree with infinitely many non-monomial rescaling limits.
Iteration of the function $f_λ(z)=λ+ z+\tan z, z \in \mathbb{C}$ is investigated in this article. It is proved that for every $λ$, the Fatou set of $f_λ$ has a completely invariant Baker domain $B$; we call it the primary Fatou component. The rest of the results deals with $f_λ$ when it is topologically hyperbolic. For all real $λ$ or $λ$ such that $ λ=πk +i λ_2$ for some integer $k$ and $0 < λ_2<1$, the only other Fatou component is shown to be another completely invariant Baker domain. It is proved that if $|2+λ^2|<1$, then the Fatou set is the union of $B$ and infinitely many invariant attr…
We prove: If $f(z)$ is a critically finite rational map which has exactly two critical points and which is not conjugate to a polynomial, then the boundary of every Fatou component of $f$ is a Jordan curve. If $f(z)$ is a hyperbolic critically finite rational map all of whose postcritical points are periodic, then there exists a cycle of Fatou components whose boundaries are Jordan curves. We give examples of critically finite hyperbolic rational maps $f$ with the property that on the closure of a Fatou component $Ω$ satisfying $f(Ω)=Ω$, $f|_{\bdry Ω}$ is not topologically conjugate to the dyn…
We show that an invariant Fatou component of a hyperbolic transcendental entire function is a bounded Jordan domain (in fact, a quasidisc) if and only if it contains only finitely many critical points and no asymptotic curves. We use this theorem to prove criteria for the boundedness of Fatou components and local connectivity of Julia sets for hyperbolic entire functions, and give examples that demonstrate that our results are optimal. A particularly strong dichotomy is obtained in the case of a function with precisely two critical values.
We study the class of parabolic Dulac germs of hyperbolic polycycles. For such germs we give a constructive proof of the existence of a unique Fatou coordinate, admitting an asymptotic expansion in the power-iterated log scale.
Recently Merenkov and Sabitova introduced the notion of a homogeneous planar set. Using this notion they proved a result for Sierpi${ń}$ski carpet Julia sets of hyperbolic rational maps that relates the diameters of the peripheral circles to the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set. We extend this theorem to Julia sets (not necessarily Sierpi${ń}$ski carpets) of semi-hyperbolic rational maps, and prove a stronger version of the theorem that was conjectured by Merenkov and Sabitova.
A classification of the periodic components of the Fatou set of $p$-adic rational maps. Each such periodic component is either an immediate attracting basin or an open affinoid, where the dynamics is quasi-periodic (the $p$-adic analogues of Siegel discs and Herman rings.) The main tool is a fixed point theorem for connected subsets of Berkovich's projective line (or p-adic hyperbolic space).
Many authors have studied the dynamics of hyperbolic transcendental entire functions; these are those for which the postsingular set is a compact subset of the Fatou set. Equivalenty, they are characterized as being expanding. Mihaljević-Brandt studied a more general class of maps for which finitely many of their postsingular points can be in their Julia set, and showed that these maps are also expanding with respect to a certain orbifold metric. In this paper we generalise these ideas further, and consider a class of maps for which the postsingular set is not even bounded. We are able to prov…
Let $X$ be a closed, $1$-dimensional, complex subvariety of $\CC^2$ and let $\ol{\BB}$ be a closed ball in $\CC^2 - X$. Then there exists a Fatou-Bieberbach domain $Ω$ with $X \subseteq Ω\subseteq \CC^2 - \ol{\BB}$ and a biholomorphic map $Φ: Ω\ra \CC^2$ such that $\CC^2 - Φ(X)$ is Kobayashi hyperbolic. As corollaries, there is an embedding of the plane in $\CC^2$ whose complement is hyperbolic, and there is a nontrivial Fatou-Bieberbach domain containing any finite collection of complex lines.
Markov partitions persisting in a neighbourhood of hyperbolic components of rational maps were constructed under the condition that closures of Fatou components are disjoint in \cite{R1}. Given such a partition, we characterize all nearby hyperbolic components in terms of the symbolic dynamics. This means we can count them, and also obtain topological information. We also determine extra conditions under which all nearby type IV hyperbolic components are given by matings. These are probably the first known results of this type.
Let f be a transcendental entire map that is subhyperbolic, i.e., the intersection of the Fatou set F(f) and the postsingular set P(f) is compact and the intersection of the Julia set J(f) and P(f) is finite. Assume that no asymptotic value of f belongs to J(f) and that the local degree of f at all points in J(f) is bounded by some finite constant. We prove that there is a hyperbolic map g (of the form g(z)=f(bz) for some complex number b) with connected Fatou set such that f and g are semiconjugate on their Julia sets. Furthermore, we show that this semiconjugacy is a conjugacy when restricte…
We show that Fatou components of a semi-hyperbolic rational map are John domains and that the converse does not hold. This generalizes a famous result of Carleson, Jones and Yoccoz. We show that a connected Julia set is locally connected for a large class of non-uniformly hyperbolic rational maps. This class is more general than semi-hyperbolicity and includes Collet-Eckmann and Topological Collet-Eckmann maps and maps verifying a summability condition (as considered by Graczyk and Smirnov).
We consider the structure of substantially dissipative complex Hénon maps admitting a dominated splitting on the Julia set. The dominated splitting assumption corresponds to the one-dimensional assumption that there are no critical points on the Julia set. Indeed, we prove the corresponding description of the Fatou set, namely that it consists of only finitely many components, each either attracting or parabolic periodic. In particular there are no rotation domains, and no wandering components. Moreover, we show that $J = J^\star$ and the dynamics on $J$ is hyperbolic away from parabolic cycle…
We study polygonal billiards with reflection laws contracting the reflected angle towards the normal. It is shown that if a polygon does not have parallel sides facing each other, then the corresponding billiard map has finitely many ergodic SRB measures whose basins cover a set of full Lebesgue measure.
We show that a sectional-hyperbolic attracting set for a Hölder-$C^1$ vector field admits finitely many physical/SRB measures whose ergodic basins cover Lebesgue almost all points of the basin of topological attraction. In addition, these physical measures depend continuously on the flow in the $C^1$ topology, that is, sectional-hyperbolic attracting sets are statistically stable. To prove these results we show that each central-unstable disk in a neighborhood of this class of attracting sets is eventually expanded to contain a ball whose inner radius is uniformly bounded away from zero.
We prove that the set of diffeomorphisms having at most finitely many attractors contains a dense and open subset of the space of $C^1$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center. This is obtained thanks to a robust geometric property of partially hyperbolic laminations that we show to hold after perturbations of the dynamics. This technique also allows to prove that $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms far from homoclinic tangencies in dimension $3$ either have at most finitely many attractors, or satisfy Newhouse phenomenon.
Let $f$ be a function in the Eremenko-Lyubich class $\mathcal{B}$, and let $U$ be an unbounded, forward invariant Fatou component of $f$. We relate the number of singularities of an inner function associated to $f|_U$ with the number of tracts of $f$. In particular, we show that if $f$ lies in either of two large classes of functions in $\mathcal{B}$, and also has finitely many tracts, then the number of singularities of an associated inner function is at most equal to the number of tracts of $f$. Our results imply that for hyperbolic functions of finite order there is an upper bound -- relate…
In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of the generalized intrinsic level set with respect to the given ergodic meausre in a class of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps with finitely many branches.
We study the dynamics of post-critically finite endomorphisms of P^k(C). We prove that post-critically finite endomorphisms are always post-critically finite all the way down under a mild regularity condition on the post-critical set. We study the eigenvalues of periodic points of post-critically finite endomorphisms. Then, under a weak transversality condition and assuming Kobayashi hyperbolicity of the complement of the post-critical set, we prove that the only possible Fatou components are super-attracting basins, thus partially extending to any dimension a result of Fornaess-Sibony and Ron…
We discuss the dynamic and structural properties of polynomial semigroups, a natural extension of iteration theory to random (walk) dynamics, where the semigroup $G$ of complex polynomials (under the operation of composition of functions) is such that there exists a bounded set in the plane which contains any finite critical value of any map $g \in G$. In general, the Julia set of such a semigroup $G$ may be disconnected, and each Fatou component of such $G$ is either simply connected or doubly connected (\cite{Su01,Su9}). In this paper, we show that for any two distinct Fatou components of ce…
We consider nondegenerate, finitely supported random walks on a finitely generated Gromov hyperbolic group. We show that the entropy and the escape rate are Lipschitz functions of the probability if the support remains constant.
Given a probability measure on a finitely generated group, its Martin boundary is a way to compactify the group using the Green's function of the corresponding random walk. We give a complete topological characterization of the Martin boundary of finitely supported random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually abelian parabolic subgroups. In particular, in the case of nonuniform lattices in the real hyperbolic space H n , we show that the Martin boundary coincides with the CAT (0) boundary of the truncated space, and thus when n = 3, is homeomorphic to the Sierpinski carpet.
For finitely supported random walks on finitely generated groups $G$ we prove that the identity map on $G$ extends to a continuous equivariant surjection from the Martin boundary to the Floyd boundary, with preimages of conical points being singletons. This yields new results for relatively hyperbolic groups. Our key estimate relates the Green and Floyd metrics, generalizing results of Ancona for random walks on hyperbolic groups and of Karlsson for quasigeodesics. We then apply these techniques to obtain some results concerning the harmonic measure on the limit sets of geometrically finite is…
