We show that if a meromorphic function has two completely invariant Fatou components and only finitely many critical and asymptotic values, then its Julia set is a Jordan curve. However, even if both domains are attracting basins, the Julia set need not be a quasicircle. We also show that all critical and asymptotic values are contained in the two completely invariant components. This need not be the case for functions with infinitely many critical and asymptotic values.
We continue our study of the dynamics of meromorphic mappings with small topological degree on a compact Kähler surface $X$. Under general hypotheses we are able to construct a canonical invariant measure which is mixing, does not charge pluripolar sets and admits a natural geometric description. Our hypotheses are always satisfied when $X$ has Kodaira dimension zero, or when the mapping is induced by a polynomial endomorphism of $\mathbf{C}^2$. They are new even in the birational case. We also exhibit families of mappings where our assumptions are generically satisfied and show that if counte…
In this paper we develop fundamental tools and methods to study meromorphic functions in an equivariant setup. As our main result we construct quotients of Rosenlicht-type for Stein spaces acted upon holomorphically by complex-reductive Lie groups and their algebraic subgroups. In particular, we show that in this setup invariant meromorphic functions separate orbits in general position. Applications to almost homogeneous spaces and principal orbit types are given. Furthermore, we use the main result to investigate the relation between holomorphic and meromorphic invariants for reductive group …
We construct the meromorphic functions invariant under the action of the sense-preserving wallpaper groups on the complex plane. We discuss possible generalisa-tions of this to the general wallpaper groups. This provides the answer to a question posed on StackExchange regarding the possible symmetries of elliptic functions.
In this note, we give an elementary proof of the absence of invariant line fields on the conical Julia set of an analytic function of one variable. This proof applies not only to rational as well as transcendental meromorphic functions (where it was previously known), but even to the extremely general setting of Ahlfors islands maps as defined by Adam Epstein. In fact, we prove a more general result on the absence of invariant_differentials_, measurable with respect to a conformal measure that is supported on the (unbranched) conical Julia set. This includes the study of cohomological equation…
Based on the so-called re-scaling method, we will give a detailed description of the solutions to the Hamiltonian system (\ref{Hsystem}) below, which was discovered only recently by Kecker, and is strongly related to Painleve's fourth differential equation. In particular, the problem to determine those fourth Painleve transcendents with positive Nevanlinna deficiency $δ(0,w)$, is completely resolved.
We consider the dynamics of a meromorphic map on a compact kahler surface whose topological degree is smaller than its first dynamical degree. The latter quantity is the exponential rate at which its iterates expand the cohomology class of a kahler form. Our goal in this article and its sequels is to carry out a conjectural program for constructing and analyzing a natural measure of maximal entropy for each such map. Here we take the first step, converting information about the linear action of the map on cohomology to invariant currents with special geometric structure. We also give some exam…
In this paper, we study the uniqueness of the differential-difference of meromorphic functions. We prove the following result: Let $f$ be a nonconstant meromorphic function of $ρ_{2}(f)<1$, let $η$ be a non-zero complex number, $n\geq1, k\geq0$ two integers and let $a\not\equiv0,\infty$ be a small function of $f$. If $f$ and $(Δ_η^{n}f)^{(k)}$ share $0,\infty$ CM and share $a$ IM, then $f\equiv(Δ_η^{n}f)^{(k)}$, which use a completely different method to improve some results due to Chen-Xu [1].
Using a `height-to-radical' identity, we define the archimedean contribution to the radical, $r_\arch$, and we give a new proof of the abc theorem for the field of meromorphic functions. The first step of the proof is completely formal and yields that the height is bounded by the radical, $h\leq r$, where $r=r_\na+r_\arch$ is the radical completed with the archimedean contribution. The second step is analytic in nature and uses the lemma on the logarithmic derivative to derive a bound for $r_\arch$.
A version of the second main theorem of Nevanlinna theory is proved, where the ramification term is replaced by a term depending on a certain composition operator of a meromorphic function of small hyper-order. As a corollary of this result it is shown that if three distinct values of a meromorphic function f of hyper-order less than 1/n^2 have forward invariant pre-images with respect to a fixed branch of the algebraic function t(z)=z+a_{n-1} z^{1-1/n}+...+a_1 z^{1/n}+a_0 with constant coefficients, then f(t(z)) = f(z) for all z. This is a generalization of Picard's theorem for meromorphic fu…
It is shown that if three distinct values of a meromorphic function f:C^n -> P^1 of hyper-order strictly less than 2/3 have forward invariant pre-images with respect to a translation t:C^n -> C^n, t(z)=z+c, then f is a periodic function with period c. This result can be seen as a generalization of M. Green's Picard-type theorem in the special case where the hyper-order of f is less than 2/3, since the empty pre-images of the usual Picard exceptional values are by definition always forward invariant. In addition, difference analogues of the lemma on the logarithmic derivative and of the second …
We consider the differential equations $s' = c^5$ and $c' = - s^5$ with initial conditions $s(0) = 0$ and $c(0) = 1$. We show that $s^2 c^2$ extends to the reciprocal of the Weierstrass elliptic function with invariants $g_2 = 0$ and $g_3 = 16$. We also show that powers of $s^2 c^2$ are the only functions of the form $s^m c^n$ that extend meromorphically in the plane.
For any connected component $H_0$ of the space of real meromorphic functions we build a compactification $N(H_0)$ of the space $H_0$. Then we express the Euler characteristics of the spaces $H_0$ and $N(H_0)$ in terms of topological invariants of functions from $H_0$.
Let $M$ be the class of all transcendental meromorphic functions $f: \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C} \bigcup\{\infty\}$ with at least two poles or one pole that is not an omitted value, and $M_o =\{f \in M:f{has at least one omitted value}\}$. Some dynamical issues of the functions in $M_o$ are addressed in this article. A complete classification in terms of forward orbits of all the multiply connected Fatou components is made. As a corollary, it follows that the Julia set is not totally disconnected unless all the omitted values are contained in a single Fatou component. Non-existence of both Baker…
Let G be a semigroup of rational functions of degree at least two, under composition of functions. Suppose that G contains two polynomials with non-equal Julia sets. We prove that the smallest closed subset of the Riemann sphere which contains at least three points and is completely invariant under each element of G, is the sphere itself.
Let G be a semigroup of rational functions of degree at least two where the semigroup operation is composition of functions. We prove that the largest open subset of the Riemann sphere on which the semigroup G is normal and is completely invariant under each element of G, can have only 0, 1, 2, or infinitely many components.
In \cite{BeEr}, Bergweiler and Eremenko computed the number of critical points of the Green's function on a torus by investigating the dynamics of a certain family of antiholomorphic meromorphic functions on tori. They also observed that hyperbolic maps are dense in this family of meromorphic functions in a rather trivial way. In this paper, we study the parameter space of this family of meromorphic functions, which can be written as antiholomorphic perturbations of Weierstrass Zeta functions. On the one hand, we give a complete topological description of the hyperbolic components and their bo…
We establish quantitative estimates for sampling (dominating) sets in model spaces associated with meromorphic inner functions, i.e. those corresponding to de Branges spaces. Our results encompass the Logvinenko-Sereda-Panejah (LSP) Theorem including Kovrijkine's optimal sampling constants for Paley-Wiener spaces. It also extends Dyakonov's LSP theoremfor model spaces associated with bounded derivative inner functions. Considering meromorphic inner functions allows us tointroduce a new geometric density condition, in terms of which the sampling sets are completely characterized. This, incompar…
Let f be a transcendental entire function that omits a complex value a. We show that for every simply connected region D that does not contain a the full preimage of D is disconnected. We conjecture that the same holds if one only assumes that a is omitted locally. We were able to prove this conjecture under the additional assumption that f is of finite order. We include some auxilliary results on the singularities of the inverses of entire functions which are of independent interest.
Newton flows are dynamical systems generated by a continuous, desingularized Newton method for mappings from a Euclidean space to itself. We focus on the special case of meromorphic functions on the complex plane. Inspired by the analogy between the rational (complex) and the elliptic (i.e., doubly periodic meromorphic) functions, a theory on the class of so-called Elliptic Newton flows is developed. With respect to an appropriate topology on the set of all elliptic functions $f$ of fixed order $ r (\geqslant 2)$ we prove: For almost all functions $f$, the corresponding Newton flows are struct…
We present results expressing conditions for the existence of meromorphic first integrals for Pfaff equations of arbitrary codimension, integrable or not, on complex manifolds. These results are in the same vein as previous ones by J-P. Jouanolou and E. Ghys. We also prove an enumerative result counting the number of hypersurfaces invariant by a projective holomorphic foliation with split tangent sheaf.
Given a meromorphic function $s: \mathbb{C}\to \mathbb{P}^{1}$, we obtain a family of fiber-preserving dominating holomorphic maps from $\mathbb{C}^{2}$ onto $\mathbb{C}^{2}\setminus graph(s)$ defined in terms of the flows of complete vector fields of type $\mathbb{C}^{\ast}$ and of an entire function $h:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}$ whose graph does not meet $graph(s)$, which was determined by Buzzard and Lu. In particular, we prove that the dominating map constructed by these authors to prove the dominability of $\mathbb{C}^{2}\setminus graph(s)$ is in the above family. We also study the compleme…
We study non-trivial translation-invariant probability measures on the space of entire functions of one complex variable. The existence (and even an abundance) of such measures was proven by Benjamin Weiss. Answering Weiss question, we find a relatively sharp lower bound for the growth of entire functions in the support of such measures. The proof of this result consists of two independent parts: the proof of the lower bound and the construction, which yields its sharpness. Each of these parts combines various tools (both classical and new) from the theory of entire and subharmonic functions a…
We prove that the family $\mathcal{F}_C(D)$ of all meromorphic functions $f$ on a domain $D\subseteq \mathbb{C}$ with the property that the spherical area of the image domain $f(D)$ is uniformly bounded by $C π$ is quasi--normal of order $\le C$. We also discuss the close relations between this result and the well--known work of Brézis and Merle on blow--up solutions of Liouville's equation. These results are completely in the spirit of Gromov's compactness theorem, as pointed out at the end of the paper.
