An analysis is given of $*$-representations of rank 2 single vertex graphs. We develop dilation theory for the non-selfadjoint algebras $\A_θ$ and $\A_u$ which are associated with the commutation relation permutation $θ$ of a 2 graph and, more generally, with commutation relations determined by a unitary matrix $u$ in $M_m(\bC) \otimes M_n(\bC)$. We show that a defect free row contractive representation has a unique minimal dilation to a $*$-representation and we provide a new simpler proof of Solel's row isometric dilation of two $u$-commuting row contractions. Furthermore it is shown that the C*-envelope of $\A_u$ is the generalised Cuntz algebra $Ø_{X_u}$ for the product system $X_u$ of $u$; that for $m\geq 2 $ and $n \geq 2 $ contractive representations of $\Ath$ need not be completely contractive; and that the universal tensor algebra $\T_+(X_u)$ need not be isometrically isomorphic to $\A_u$.
Given a contractive tuple of Hilbert space operators satisfying certain $A$-relations we show that there exists a unique minimal dilation to generators of Cuntz-Krieger algebras or its extension by compact operators. This Cuntz-Krieger dilation can be obtained from the classical minimal isometric dilation as a certain maximal $A$-relation piece. We define a maximal piece more generally for a finite set of polynomials in $n$ noncommuting variables. We classify all representations of Cuntz-Krieger algebras ${\mathcal O}_A$ obtained from dilations of commuting tuples satisfying $A$-relations. The…
Inspired by some recent development on the theory about projection valued dilations for operator valued measures or more generally bounded homomorphism dilations for bounded linear maps on Banach algebras, we explore a pure algebraic version of the dilation theory for linear systems acting on unital algebras and vector spaces. By introducing two natural dilation structures, namely the canonical and the universal dilation systems, we prove that every linearly minimal dilation is equivalent to a reduced homomorphism dilation of the universal dilation, and all the linearly minimal homomorphism di…
We consider a family of Hecke C*-algebras which can be realised as crossed products by semigroups of endomorphisms. We show by dilating representations of the semigroup crossed product that the category of representations of the Hecke algebra is equivalent to the category of continuous unitary representations of a totally disconnected locally compact group.
We continue our study of the general theory of possibly nonselfadjoint algebras of operators on a Hilbert space, and modules over such algebras, developing a little more technology to connect `nonselfadjoint operator algebra' with the C$^*-$algebraic framework. More particularly, we make use of the universal, or maximal, C$^*-$algebra generated by an operator algebra, and C$^*-$dilations. This technology is quite general, however it was developed to solve some problems arising in the theory of Morita equivalence of operator algebras, and as a result most of the applications given here (and in …
We study completely positive module maps on $C^{*}$-algebras which are $C^*$-module over another $C^*$-algebra with compatible actions. We extend several well known dilation and extension results to this setup, including the Stinespring dilation theorem and Wittstock, Arveson, and Voiculescu extension theorems.
Let E be a product system of C*-correspondences over N^r. Some sufficient conditions for the existence of a not necessarily regular isometric dilation of a completely contractive representation of E are established and difference between regular and *-regular dilations discussed. It is in particular shown that a minimal isometric dilation is *-regular if and only if it is doubly commuting. The case of product systems associated with higher-rank graphs is analysed in detail.
We study the triangular subalgebras of UHF algebras which provide new examples of algebras with the Dirichlet property and the Ando property. This in turn allows us to describe the semicrossed product by an isometric automorphism. We also study the isometric automorphism group of these algebras and prove that it decomposes into the semidirect product of an abelian group by a torsion free group. Various other structure results are proven as well.
The weak operator topology closed operator algebra on $L^2(R)$ generated by the one-parameter semigroups for translation, dilation and multiplication by $exp(iλx), λ\geq 0$, is shown to be a reflexive operator algebra, in the sense of Halmos, with invariant subspace lattice equal to a binest. This triple semigroup algebra, $A_{ph}$, is antisymmetric in the sense that $A_{ph} \cap A_{ph}^*= CI$, it has a nonzero proper weakly closed ideal generated by the finite-rank operators, and its unitary automorphism group is $R$. Furthermore, the 8 choices of semigroup triples provide 2 unitary equivalen…
In this paper, we construct, for a certain class of semigroup dynamical systems, two operator algebras that are universal with respect to their corresponding covariance conditions: one being self-adjoint, and another being non-self-adjoint. We prove that the $C^*$-envelope of the non-self-adjoint operator algebra is precisely the self-adjoint one. This result leads to a number of new examples of operator algebras and their $C^*$-envelopes, with many from number fields and commutative rings. We further establish the functoriality of these operator algebras along with their applications.
We show that every interaction group extending an action of an Ore semigroup by injective unital endomorphisms of a C*-algebra, admits a dilation to an action of the corresponding enveloping group on another unital C*-algebra, of which the former is a C*-subalgebra: the interaction group is obtained by composing the action with a conditional expectation. The dilation is essentially unique if a certain natural condition of minimality is imposed. If the action is induced by covering maps on the spectrum, then the expectation is faithful.
It is well known that unital contractive representations of the disk algebra are completely contractive. Let A denote the subalgebra of the disk algebra consisting of those functions f whose first derivative vanishes at 0. We prove that there are unital contractive representations of A which are not completely contractive, and furthermore provide a Kaiser and Varopoulos inspired example for A and present a characterization of those contractive representations of A which are completely contractive. In the positive direction, for the algebra of rational functions with poles off the distinguished…
This paper examines actions of right LCM semigroups by endomorphisms of C*-algebras that encode an additional structure of the right LCM semigroup. We define contractive covariant representations for these semigroup dynamical systems and prove a generalized Stinespring's dilation theorem showing that these representations can be dilated if and only if the map on the C*-algebra is unital and completely positive. This generalizes earlier results about dilations of right LCM semigroups of contractions. In addition, we also give sufficient conditions under which a contractive covariant representat…
Motivated by Ball, Li, Timotin and Trent's Schur-Agler class version of commutant lifting theorem, we introduce a class, denoted by $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$, of $n$-tuples of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We always assume that $n \geq 3$. The importance of this class of $n$-tuples stems from the fact that the von Neumann inequality or the existence of isometric dilation does not hold in general for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions on Hilbert spaces (even in the level of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces). Under some rank-finiteness assumptions, w…
We study completely contractive representations of product systems of $C^*$-correspondences over semigroups. For a product system of $C^*$-correspondences over the semigroup $\mathbb{N}^2$, we prove that every such representation can be dilated to an isometric (or Toeplitz) representation. We use it to prove that every pair of commuting CP maps on a von Neumann algebra $M$ can be dilated to a commuting pair of endomorphisms (on a larger von Neumann algebra).
Higher-rank graph generalisations of the Popescu-Poisson transform are constructed, allowing us to develop a dilation theory for higher rank operator tuples. These dilations are joint dilations of the families of operators satisfying relations encoded by the graph structure which we call $Λ$-contractions or $Λ$-coisometries. Besides commutant lifting results and characterisations of pure states on higher rank graph algebras several applications to the structure theory of non-selfadjoint graph operator algebras are presented generalising recent results in special cases.
A contractive $n$-tuple $A=(A_1,...,A_n)$ has a minimal joint isometric dilation $S=(S_1,...,S_n)$ where the $S_i$'s are isometries with pairwise orthogonal ranges. This determines a representation of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra. When $A$ acts on a finite dimensional space, the \wot-closed nonself-adjoint algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ generated by $S$ is completely described in terms of the properties of $A$. This provides complete unitary invariants for the corresponding representations. In addition, we show that the algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ is always hyper-reflexive. In the last section, we describe s…
The hyperbolic algebra A_h, studied recently by Katavolos and Power, is the weak star closed operator algebra on L^2(R) generated by H^\infty(R), as multiplication operators, and by the dilation operators V_t, t \geq 0, given by V_t f(x) = e^{t/2} f(e^t x). We show that A_h is a reflexive operator algebra and that the four dimensional manifold Lat A_h (with the natural topology) is the reflexive hull of a natural two dimensional subspace.
When S is a discrete subsemigroup of a discrete group G such that G = S^{-1} S, it is possible to extend circle-valued multipliers from S to G; to dilate (projective) isometric representations of S to (projective) unitary representations of G; and to dilate/extend actions of S by injective endomorphisms of a C*-algebra to actions of G by automorphisms of a larger C*-algebra. These dilations are unique provided they satisfy a minimality condition. The (twisted) semigroup crossed product corresponding to an action of S is isomorphic to a full corner in the (twisted) crossed product by the dilate…
We consider the GNS Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ of a uniformly hyper-finite $C^*$- algebra and study a class of unbounded Lindbladian arises from commutators. Exploring the local structure of UHF algebra, we have shown that the associated Hudson-Parthasarathy type quantum stochastic differential equation admits a unitary solution. The vacuum expectation of homomorphic co-cycle, implemented by the Hudson-Parthasarathy flow, is conservative and gives the minimal semi-group associated with the formal Lindbladian. We also associate conservative minimal semi-groups to another class of Lindbladian b…
We study completely contractive representations of product systems $X$ of correspondences over the semigroup $\mathbb{Z}_+^k$. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for such a representation to have a regular isometric dilation. We discuss representations that doubly commute and show that these representations induce completely contractive representations of the norm closed algebra generated by the image of the Fock representation of $X$.
In 1973 Paschke defined a factorization for completely positive maps between C*-algebras. In this paper we show that for normal maps between von Neumann algebras, this factorization has a universal property, and coincides with Stinespring's dilation for normal maps into B(H).
Evans-Hudson flows are constructed for a class of quantum dynamical semigroups with unbounded generator on UHF algebras, which appeared in \cite{Ma}. It is shown that these flows are unital and covariant. Ergodicity of the flows for the semigroups associated with partial states is also discussed.
Given an n x n integer matrix A whose eigenvalues are strictly greater than 1 in absolute value, let σ_A be the transformation of the n-torus T^n=R^n/Z^n defined by σ_A(e^{2πix})=e^{2πiAx} for x\in R^n. We study the associated crossed-product C*-algebra, which is defined using a certain transfer operator for σ_A, proving it to be simple and purely infinite and computing its K-theory groups.
This doctoral thesis is a mathematical study of quantum computing, concentrating on two related, but independent topics. First up are dilations, covered in chapter 2. In chapter 3 "diamond, andthen, dagger" we turn to the second topic: effectus theory. Both chapters, or rather parts, can be read separately and feature a comprehensive introduction of their own.
We take a new look at dilation theory for nonself-adjoint operator algebras. Among the extremal (co)extensions of a representation, there is a special property of being fully extremal. This allows a refinement of some of the classical notions which are important when one moves away from standard examples. We show that many algebras including graph algebras and tensor algebras of C*-correspondences have the semi-Dirichlet property which collapses these notions and explains why they have a better dilation theory. This leads to variations of the notions of commutant lifting and Ando's theorem. Th…
We study dilations of finite tuples of normal, completely positive and completely contractive maps (which we call CP-maps) acting on a von Neumann algebra, and commuting according to a graph G. We show that if G is acyclic, then a tuple commuting according to it has a simultaneous *-endomorphic dilation, which also commutes according to G. Conversely, if G has a cycle, we exhibit an example of a tuple of CP-maps commuting according to G, which does not have an *-endomorphic dilation commuting according to G. To achieve these results we use dilation theory of representations of subproduct syste…
We apply Arveson's non-commutative boundary theory to dilate every Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger family of a directed graph $G$ to a full Cuntz-Krieger family for $G$. We do this by describing all representations of the Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{T}(G)$ that have unique extension when restricted to the tensor algebra $\mathcal{T}_+(G)$. This yields an alternative proof to a result of Katsoulis and Kribs that the $C^*$-envelope of $\mathcal T_+(G)$ is the Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\mathcal O(G)$. We then generalize our dilation results further, to the context of colored directed graphs, by investigating …
We study unital quantum channels which are obtained via partial trace of a $*$-automorphism of a finite unital matrix $*$-algebra. We prove that any such channel, $q$, on a unital matrix $*$-algebra, $\mathcal{A}$, admits a finite matrix $N-$dilation, $α_N$, for any natural number N. Namely, $α_N$ is a $*$-automorphism of a larger bi-partite matrix algebra $\mathcal{A} \otimes \mathcal{B}$ so that partial trace of $M$-fold self-compositions of $α_N$ yield the $M$-fold self-compositions of the original quantum channel, for any $1\leq M \leq N$. This demonstrates that repeated applications of th…
We prove that any weak* continuous semigroup $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of factorizable Markov maps acting on a von Neumann algebra $M$ equipped with a normal faithful state can be dilated by a group of Markov $*$-automorphisms analogous to the case of a single factorizable Markov operator, which is an optimal result. We also give a version of this result for strongly continuous semigroups of operators acting on noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces and examples of semigroups to which the results of this paper can be applied. Our results implies the boundedness of the McIntosh's $\mathrm{H}^\infty$ fun…
This paper addresses extensions of the complex Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup to operator algebras in free probability theory. If $a_1,...,a_k$ are $\ast$-free $\mathscr{R}$-diagonal operators in a $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor, then $D_t(a_{i_1}... a_{i_n}) = e^{-nt} a_{i_1}... a_{i_n}$ defines a dilation semigroup on the non-self-adjoint operator algebra generated by $a_1,...,a_k$. We show that $D_t$ extends (in two different ways) to a semigroup of completely positive maps on the von Neumann algebra generated by $a_1,...,a_k$. Moreover, we show that $D_t$ satisfies an optimal ultracontractive proper…
We study reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on the unit ball with the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property through the representation theory of their algebras of multipliers. We give a complete description of the representations in terms of the reproducing kernels. While representations always dilate to $*$-representations of the ambient $C^*$-algebra, we show that in our setting we automatically obtain coextensions. In fact, we show that in many cases, this phenomenon characterizes the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property. We also deduce operator theoretic dilation results which are in the spirit of…
We provide a detailed analysis of atomic *-representations of rank 2 graphs on a single vertex. They are completely classified up to unitary equivalence, and decomposed into a direct sum or direct integral of irreducible atomic representations. The building blocks are described as the minimal *-dilations of defect free representations modelled on finite groups of rank 2.
We prove that two dual operator algebras are weak$^*$ Morita equivalent if and only if they have equivalent categories of dual operator modules via completely contractive functors which are also weak$^*$-continuous on appropriate morphism spaces. Moreover, in a fashion similar to the operator algebra case, we characterize such functors as the module normal Haagerup tensor product with an appropriate weak$^*$ Morita equivalence bimodule. We also develop the theory of the $W^*$-dilation, which connects the non-selfadjoint dual operator algebra with the $W^*$-algebraic framework. In the case of w…
We study factorization and dilation properties of Markov maps between von Neumann algebras equipped with normal faithful states, i.e., completely positive unital maps which preserve the given states and also intertwine their automorphism groups. The starting point for our investigation has been the question of existence of non-factorizable Markov maps, as formulated by C. Anantharaman-Delaroche. We provide simple examples of non-factorizable Markov maps on M_n(C) for all n\geq 3, as well as an example of a one-parameter semigroup (T(t))_{t\geq 0} of Markov maps on M_4(C) such that T(t) fails t…
Motivated by the harmonic analysis of self-affine measures, we introduce a class of representations of the Cuntz algebra associated to random walks on graphs. The representations are constructed using the dilation theory of row coisometries. We study these representations, their commutant and the intertwining operators.
We show that the representations of the Cuntz C$^\ast$-algebras $O_n$ which arise in wavelet analysis and dilation theory can be classified through a simple analysis of completely positive maps on finite-dimensional space. Based on this analysis, an application in quantum information theory is obtained; namely, a structure theorem for the fixed point set of a unital quantum channel. We also include some open problems motivated by this work.
Let $A$ be a unital $C^*$-algebra and $α$ be an injective, unital endomorphism of $A$. A covariant representation of $(A,α)$ is a pair $(π,T)$ consisting of a $C^*$-representation $π$ of $A$ on a Hilbert space $H$ and a contraction $T$ in $B(H)$ satisfying $Tπ(α(a))=π(a)T$. It follows from more general results of ours that such a covariant representation can be extended to a covariant representation $(ρ,V)$ (on a larger space $K$) such that $V$ is a coisometry and it can be dilated to a covariant representation $(σ,U)$ (on a larger space $K_1$) with $U$ unitary. Our objective here is to give s…
Let P and Q be the canonical operators acting on the Hilbert space of all L^2 functions on the real line, defined appropriately on a common dense domain. The derivations D_P(A) = i(PA - AP) and D_Q(A) = i(QA - AQ) act on the *-algebra of all integral operators having smooth kernels of compact support, for example, and one may consider the noncommutative "Laplacian" L(A) = D_P^2(A) + D_Q^2(A), as a linear mapping of this *-algebra into itself. L generates a semigroup of normal completely positive maps on B(H), and we establish some basic properties of this semigroup and its minimal dilation to …
A real seminormed involutive algebra is a real associative algebra ${\mathcal A}$ endowed with an involutive antiautomorphism $*$ and a submultiplicative seminorm $p$ with $p(a^*) =p(a)$ for $a\in {\mathcal A}$. Then ${\mathop{\tt ball}\nolimits}({\mathcal A},p) := \{a \in {\mathcal A} \colon p(a) < 1\}$ is an involutive subsemigroup. For the case where ${\mathcal A}$ is unital, our main result asserts that a function $ϕ\colon{\mathop{\tt ball}\nolimits}({\mathcal A},p) \to B(V)$, $V$ a Hilbert space, is completely positive (defined suitably) if and only if it is positive definite and analytic…
We consider contractive homomorphisms of a planar algebra ${\mathcal A}(Ω)$ over a finitely connected bounded domain $Ω\subseteq \C$ and ask if they are necessarily completely contractive. We show that a homomorphism $ρ:{\mathcal A}(Ω) \to {\mathcal B}(\mathcal H)$ for which $\dim({\mathcal A}(Ω)/\ker ρ) = 2$ is the direct integral of homomorphisms $ρ_T$ induced by operators on two dimensional Hilbert spaces via a suitable functional calculus $ρ_T: f \mapsto f(T), f\in {\mathcal A}(Ω)$. It is well-known that contractive homomorphisms $ρ_T$, induced by a linear transformation $T:\C^2 \to \C^2$ …
Representations of $C^*$-algebras are realized on section spaces of holomorphic homogeneous vector bundles. The corresponding section spaces are investigated by means of a new notion of reproducing kernel, suitable for dealing with involutive diffeomorphisms defined on the base spaces of the bundles. Applications of this technique to dilation theory of completely positive maps are explored and the critical role of complexified homogeneous spaces in connection with the Stinespring dilations is pointed out. The general results are further illustrated by a discussion of several specific topics, i…
This thesis is dedicated to developing a dilation theory for semigroups of completely positive maps. The first part treats two-parameter semigroups, and contains also contributions to dilation theory of product system representations. The second part deals with completely positive semigroups parameterized by quite general semigroups, where the major technical tool introduced is subproduct systems and their representations. In the third part subproduct systems are studied, together with the multivariable operator theory and operator algebras they give rise to.
In this note, we show that a quasi-free Hilbert module R defined over the polydisk algebra with kernel function k(z, w) admits a unique minimal dilation (actually an isometric co-extension) to the Hardy module over the polydisk if and only if S^{-1}(z, w) k(z, w) is a positive kernel function, where S(z, w) is the Szegö kernel for the polydisk. Moreover, we establish the equivalence of such a factorization of the kernel function and a positivity condition, defined using the hereditary functional calculus, which was introduced earlier by Athavale \cite{Ath} and Ambrozie, Englis and Müller. An e…
A higher rank numerical semigroup is a positive cone whose seminormalization is isomorphic to the free abelian semigroup. The corresponding nonselfadjoint semigroup algebras are known to provide examples that answer Arveson's Dilation Problem to the negative. Here we show that these algebras share the polydisc as the character space in a canonical way. We subsequently use this feature in order to identify higher rank numerical semigroups from the corresponding nonselfadjoint algebras.
Let $\Fth$ be a $\Bk$-graph on a single vertex. We show that every irreducible atomic $*$-representation is the minimal $*$-dilation of a group construction representation. It follows that every atomic representation decomposes as a direct sum or integral of such representations. We characterize periodicity of $\Fth$ and identify a symmetry subgroup $H_θ$ of $\bZ^\Bk$. If this has rank $s$, then $\ca(\Fth) \cong \rC(\bT^s) \otimes \fA$ for some simple C*-algebra $\fA$.
A closed real subspace V of a complex Hilbert space H is called standard if V intersects iV trivially and and V + i V is dense in H. In this note we study several aspects of the geometry of the space Stand(H) of standard subspaces. In particular, we show that modular conjugations define the structure of a reflection space and that the modular automorphism groups extend this to the structure of a dilation space. Every antiunitary representation of a graded Lie group G leads to a morphism of dilation spaces Hom$_{gr}(R^x,G)$ to Stand(H). Here dilation invariant geodesics (with respect to the ref…
We consider a free action of an Ore semigroup on a higher-rank graph, and the induced action by endomorphisms of the $C^*$-algebra of the graph. We show that the crossed product by this action is stably isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebra of a quotient graph. Our main tool is Laca's dilation theory for endomorphic actions of Ore semigroups on $C^*$-algebras, which embeds such an action in an automorphic action of the enveloping group on a larger $C^*$-algebra.
The notion of a subproduct system, a generalization of that of a product system, is introduced. We show that there is an essentially 1 to 1 correspondence between cp-semigroups and pairs (X,T) where X is a subproduct system and T is an injective subproduct system representation. A similar statement holds for subproduct systems and units of subproduct systems. This correspondence is used as a framework for developing a dilation theory for cp-semigroups. Results we obtain: (i) a *-automorphic dilation to semigroups of *-endomorphisms over quite general semigroups; (ii) necessary and sufficient c…
We describe a class of rank-2 graphs whose C^*-algebras are AT algebras. For a subclass which we call rank-2 Bratteli diagrams, we compute the K-theory of the C*-algebra. We identify rank-2 Bratteli diagrams whose C*-algebras are simple and have real-rank zero, and characterise the K-invariants achieved by such algebras. We give examples of rank-2 Bratteli diagrams whose C*-algebras contain as full corners the irrational rotation algebras and the Bunce-Deddens algebras.
For a row-finite higher-rank graph Λ, we construct a higher-rank graph TΛ such that the Toeplitz algebra of Λ is isomorphic to the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of TΛ. We then prove that the higher-rank graph TΛ is always aperiodic and use this fact to give another proof of a uniqueness theorem for the Toeplitz algebras of higher-rank graphs.
We study the general and connected stable ranks for C*-algebras. We estimate these ranks for pullbacks of C*-algebras, and for tensor products by commutative C*-algebras. Finally, we apply these results to determine these ranks for certain commutative C*-algebras, and non-commutative CW-complexes.
We study the structure and compute the stable rank of C*-algebras of finite higher-rank graphs. We completely determine the stable rank of the C*-algebra when the k-graph either contains no cycle with an entrance, or is cofinal. We also determine exactly which finite, locally convex k-graphs yield unital stably finite C*-algebras. We give several examples to illustrate our results.
We study the general and connected stable ranks for $C^{\ast}$-algebras. We estimate these ranks for certain $C(X)$-algebras, and use that to do the same for certain group $C^{\ast}$-algebras. Furthermore, we also give estimates for the ranks of crossed product $C^{\ast}$-algebras by finite group actions with the Rokhlin property.
We establish a dilation-theoretic characterization of the Choquet order on the space of measures on a compact convex set using ideas from the theory of operator algebras. This yields an extension of Cartier's dilation theorem to the non-separable setting, as well as a non-separable version of Šaškin's theorem from approximation theory. We show that a slight variant of this order characterizes the representations of a commutative C*-algebra that have the unique extension property relative to a set of generators. This reduces the commutative case of Arveson's hyperrigidity conjecture to the ques…
