We consider a family of Hecke C*-algebras which can be realised as crossed products by semigroups of endomorphisms. We show by dilating representations of the semigroup crossed product that the category of representations of the Hecke algebra is equivalent to the category of continuous unitary representations of a totally disconnected locally compact group.
Laca constructed a minimal automorphic dilation for every semigroup dynamical system arising from an action of an Ore semigroup by injective endomorphisms of a unital $C^*$-algebra. Here we show that the semigroup crossed product with its action by inner endomorphisms given by the implementing isometries has as minimal automorphic dilation the group crossed product of the original dilation. Applications include recent examples studied by Cuntz and the second named author.
We develop a theory of crossed products by "actions" of Hecke pairs $(G, Γ)$, motivated by applications in non-abelian $C^*$-duality. Our approach gives back the usual crossed product construction whenever $G / Γ$ is a group and retains many of the aspects of crossed products by groups. In this first of two articles we lay the $^*$-algebraic foundations of these crossed products by Hecke pairs and we explore their representation theory.
In this second article on crossed products by "actions" of Hecke pairs we study their different C*-completions, namely we show how reduced and full C*-crossed products can be defined. We also establish that our construction coincides with that of Laca, Larsen and Neshveyev whenever they are both definable. As an application of our theory, we prove a Stone-von Neumann theorem for Hecke pairs which encompasses the work of an Huef, Kaliszewski and Raeburn and we lay down the foundations for obtaining a form of Katayama duality with respect to the Echterhoff-Quigg crossed product.
When S is a discrete subsemigroup of a discrete group G such that G = S^{-1} S, it is possible to extend circle-valued multipliers from S to G; to dilate (projective) isometric representations of S to (projective) unitary representations of G; and to dilate/extend actions of S by injective endomorphisms of a C*-algebra to actions of G by automorphisms of a larger C*-algebra. These dilations are unique provided they satisfy a minimality condition. The (twisted) semigroup crossed product corresponding to an action of S is isomorphic to a full corner in the (twisted) crossed product by the dilate…
An integer matrix $A\in M_d(\Z)$ induces a covering $σ_A$ of $\T^d$ and an endomorphism $α_A:f\mapsto f\circ σ_A$ of $C(\T^d)$ for which there is a natural transfer operator $L$. In this paper, we compute the KMS states on the Exel crossed product $C(\T^d)\rtimes_{α_A,L}\N$ and its Toeplitz extension. We find that $C(\T^d)\rtimes_{α_A,L}\N$ has a unique KMS state, which has inverse temperature $β=\log|\det A|$. Its Toeplitz extension, on the other hand, exhibits a phase transition at $β=\log|\det A|$, and for larger $β$ the simplex of KMS$_β$ states is isomorphic to the simplex of probability …
For discrete Hecke pairs $(G,H)$, we introduce a notion of covariant representation which reduces in the case where $H$ is normal to the usual definition of covariance for the action of $G/H$ on $c_0(G/H)$ by right translation; in many cases where $G$ is a semidirect product, it can also be expressed in terms of covariance for a semigroup action. We use this covariance to characterise the representations of $c_0(G/H)$ which are multiples of the multiplication representation on $\ell^2(G/H)$, and more generally, we prove an imprimitivity theorem for regular representations of certain crossed pr…
The Bost-Connes Hecke C^*-algebra can be regarded as a direct limit of subalgebras involving finite sets of primes. Each of these finite-prime analogues of the Bost-Connes algebra is a crossed product by a semigroup N^F, where F is finite. We describe composition series of ideals for these semigroup crossed products in which the intermediate subquotients are finite direct sums of classifiable AT-algebras. We then use similar techniques to identify subquotients of the Bost-Connes algebra as classifiable AT-algebras.
We consider group-subgroup pairs in which the group is a semidirect product and the subgroup is contained in the normal part. We give conditions for the pair to be a Hecke pair and we show that the enveloping Hecke algebra and Hecke C*-algebra are canonically isomorphic to semigroup crossed products, generalizing earlier results of Arledge, Laca and Raeburn and of Brenken.
We study the crossed product $C^*$-algebra associated to injective endomorphisms, which turns out to be equivalent to study the crossed product by the dilated autormorphism. We prove that the dilation of the Bernoulli $p$-shift endomorphism is topologically free. As a consequence, we have a way to twist any endomorphism of a $\D$-absorbing $C^*$-algebra into one whose dilated automorphism is essentially free and have the same $K$-theory map than the original one. This allows us to construct purely infinite crossed products $C^*$-algebras with diverse ideal structures.
We analyze Hecke pairs (G,H) and the associated Hecke algebra when G is a semidirect product N x Q and H = M x R for subgroups M of N and R of Q with M normal in N. Conditions are given in terms of N, Q, M, and R which are equivalent to the Hecke condition on (G,H), and the Schlichting completion of (G,H) is identified in terms of completions of N, Q, M, and R. Our main result shows that (assuming (G,H) coincides with its Schlichting completion) when R is normal in Q, the closure of the Hecke algebra in C*(G) is Morita-Rieffel equivalent to a crossed product I x Q/R, where I is a certain ideal…
We consider a free action of an Ore semigroup on a higher-rank graph, and the induced action by endomorphisms of the $C^*$-algebra of the graph. We show that the crossed product by this action is stably isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebra of a quotient graph. Our main tool is Laca's dilation theory for endomorphic actions of Ore semigroups on $C^*$-algebras, which embeds such an action in an automorphic action of the enveloping group on a larger $C^*$-algebra.
Given an n x n integer matrix A whose eigenvalues are strictly greater than 1 in absolute value, let σ_A be the transformation of the n-torus T^n=R^n/Z^n defined by σ_A(e^{2πix})=e^{2πiAx} for x\in R^n. We study the associated crossed-product C*-algebra, which is defined using a certain transfer operator for σ_A, proving it to be simple and purely infinite and computing its K-theory groups.
Let $Γ$ be a torsion-free arithmetic group acting on its associated global symmetric space $X$. Assume that $X$ is of non-compact type and let $Γ$ act on the geodesic boundary $\partial X$ of $X$. Via general constructions in KK-theory, we endow the K-groups of the arithmetic manifold $X/Γ$, of the reduced group C*-algebra of $Γ$ and of the boundary crossed product algebra associated to the action of $Γ$ on $\partial X$, with Hecke operators. The K-theory and K-homology groups of these C*-algebras are related by a Gysin six-term exact sequence. In the case when $Γ$ is a group of real hyperboli…
We associate a canonical Hecke pair of semidirect product groups to the ring inclusion of the algebraic integers $\oo$ in a number field $\kk$, and we construct a C*-dynamical system on the corresponding Hecke C*-algebra, analogous to the one constructed by Bost and Connes for the inclusion of the integers in the rational numbers. We describe the structure of the resulting Hecke C*-algebra as a semigroup crossed product and then, in the case of class number one, analyze the equilibrium (KMS) states of the dynamical system. The extreme KMS$_β$ states at low-temperature exhibit a phase transitio…
We introduce the term "protonormal" to refer to a subgroup H of a group G such that for every x in G the subgroups x^{-1}Hx and H commute as sets. If moreover (G,H) is a Hecke pair we show that the Hecke algebra H(G,H) is generated by the range of a canonical partial representation of G vanishing on H. As a consequence we show that there exists a maximum C*-norm on H(G,H), generalizing previous results by Brenken, Hall, Laca, Larsen, Kaliszewski, Landstad and Quigg. When there exists a normal subgroup N of G, containing H as a normal subgroup, we prove a new formula for the product of the gene…
The w*-closed triple semigroup algebra was introduced by Power and the author in [19], where it was proved to be reflexive and to be chiral, in the sense of not being unitarily equivalent to its adjoint algebra. Here an analogous operator norm-closed triple semigroup algebra $A_{ph}^{G+}$ is considered and shown to be a triple semi-crossed product for the action on analytic almost periodic functions by the semigroups of one-sided translations and one-sided dilations. The structure of isometric automorphisms of $A_{ph}^{G+}$ is determined and $A_{ph}^{G+}$ is shown to be chiral with respect to …
In an earlier work, the authors proposed a non-selfadjoint approach to the Hao-Ng isomorphism problem for the full crossed product, depending on the validity of two conjectures stated in the broader context of crossed products for operator algebras. By work of Harris and Kim, we now know that these conjectures in the generality stated may not always be valid. In this paper we show that in the context of hyperrigid tensor algebras of C*-correspondences, each one of these conjectures is equivalent to the Hao-Ng problem. This is accomplished by studying the representation theory of non-selfadjoin…
We survey some of the known results on the relation between the homology of the {\em full} Hecke algebra of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$, and the representation theory of $G$. Let us denote by $\CIc(G)$ the full Hecke algebra of $G$ and by $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ its periodic cyclic homology groups. Let $\hat G$ denote the admissible dual of $G$. One of the main points of this paper is that the groups $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ are, on the one hand, directly related to the topology of $\hat G$ and, on the other hand, the groups $\Hp_*(\CIc(G))$ are explicitly computable in terms of $G$ (essentially, in terms…
We examine the semicrossed products of a semigroup action by $*$-endomorphisms on a C*-algebra, or more generally of an action on an arbitrary operator algebra by completely contractive endomorphisms. The choice of allowable representations affects the corresponding universal algebra. We seek quite general conditions which will allow us to show that the C*-envelope of the semicrossed product is (a full corner of) a crossed product of an auxiliary C*-algebra by a group action. Our analysis concerns a case-by-case dilation theory on covariant pairs. In the process we determine the C*-envelope fo…
Singular actions on C*-algebras are automorphic group actions on C*-algebras, where the group need not be locally compact, or the action need not be strongly continuous. We study the covariant representation theory of such actions. In the usual case of strongly continuous actions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras, this is done via crossed products, but this approach is not available for singular C*-actions (this was our path in a previous paper). The literature regarding covariant representations for singular actions is already large and scattered, and in need of some consolidation. We …
This is a sequel to our paper on nonlinear completely positive maps and dilation theory for real involutive algebras, where we have reduced all representation classification problems to the passage from a $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal A}$ to its symmetric powers $S^n({\mathcal A})$, resp., to holomorphic representations of the multiplicative $*$-semigroup $({\mathcal A},\cdot)$. Here we study the correspondence between representations of ${\mathcal A}$ and of $S^n({\mathcal A})$ in detail. As $S^n({\mathcal A})$ is the fixed point algebra for the natural action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on ${\ma…
A genuine infinite tensor product of complex vector spaces is a vector space ${\bigotimes}_{i\in I} X_i$ whose linear maps coincide with multilinear maps on an infinite family $\{X_i\}_{i\in I}$ of vector spaces. We give a direct sum decomposition of ${\bigotimes}_{i\in I} X_i$ over a set $Ω_{I;X}$, through which we obtain a more concrete description and some properties of ${\bigotimes}_{i\in I} X_i$. If $\{A_i\}_{i\in I}$ is a family of unital $^*$-algebras, we define, through a subgroup $Ω^{\rm ut}_{I;A}\subseteq Ω_{I;A}$, an interesting subalgebra ${\bigotimes}_{i\in I}^{\rm ut} A_i$. Moreo…
